Gerald McCoy Reviews Alex Cappa, Ryan Jensen

August 12th, 2018

Bucs third-round pick Alex Cappa

Gerald McCoy has dozens of interior offensive linemen flow through the rosters of four head coaches since he arrived in Tampa.

And McCoy, who never seems to miss a practice, might be the best guy to evaluate their skills.

He was asked yesterday about two newcomers on the Bucs’ line, third-round pick guard/tackle Alex Cappa and free agent center Ryan Jensen.

McCoy had a lot of enthusiasm in his voice talking about the 6-6 Cappa out of Humboldt State.

“The thing I’ll say about [Cappa] is he’s very resilient and he can play anywhere. He can play tackle, he can play guard, and he’s a fighter. He works his tail off every day. He don’t care who he’s going against. He’s going to give you his all and he’s learning,” McCoy told SiriusXM NFL Radio.

“I’m glad we got him because he’s going to be really good. The more he learns, because he’s a big-body guy, long arms. He can move, he can move in space, got good feet. But one thing that he has that all offensive linemen need is his grip; once he gets his hands on you, you’re pretty much done.”

McCoy added that he gave Cappa “a welcome-to-the-NFL moment” recently in practice and Cappy likely learned that he better have his technique right at all times.

On Jensen, McCoy called him extremely an extremely intelligent player and explained that the nasty reputation he has is all about fun.

McCoy said he’s had conversations with Jensen and the ex-Ravens tough guys says he just can’t understand why every offensive lineman doesn’t want to hit hard and play through the whistle. Jensen, McCoy said, considers that the fun part of football.

“That’s what we need,” McCoy added

McCoy has no idea what nasty is. Soft as a marshmallow 🙂

  2. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Joe Blahak,

Yeah, because soft guys play the toughest position in all of sports with a torn bicep. You’re an idiot.

  3. Buc believer Says:

The ice cream man was basically called out by Curry when Curry said he was a “finesse player. Slime men shouldn’t be finesse they should be a wrecking ball.

  4. BushidoEvans Says:

Boy you guys are some haters lol

  5. Sumo Says:

Yeah, Mcoy is going to say bad stuff about his teammate. Lol. We better hope Kappa is good because we need him to be good. At least he’s got the right attitude to be good.
You guys that pick on Mcoy are just wrong. Give it a break.

  6. Dooshlarue Says:

Yep Gummy93…… that’s what we need…. Fun Players!
    Yay!

Couldn’t we just have left nasty as being nasty? SMDH

Would’ve preferred McCoy to say “that’s one mean son of a bitch”. Gerald is always gonna find the fun, nice side of someone. That’s great if you’re a youth pastor, or social worker. Not so much if you’re the anchor of an NFL D line.🙄

  8. Dooshlarue Says:

Maybe Softy can teach Cappa how to help opposing players off the turf with that alleged manly grip.

Or he could help Gummy stretch out his Strech Armstrong until it breaks.

Either way, they both sound like a lot of FUN!!!

  9. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Getting opinions from soft career losers who have no clue what greatness is nor one who has never won a single game that matters in his entire is pure fanboy coverage by captain blowouts number on apologists. Gmc opinion is not relevant nor reality.

  10. Dooshlarue Says:

    tmax

When are you gonna come out of the closet?

  11. Jmarkbuc Says:

GMC and Lavonte David to the Raiders for Khalil Mack and a draft pick

  12. Jmarkbuc Says:

I would’ve said Kwon instead of David, but who the hell wants Kwon?

  13. reality-is-a-beotch Says:

come on where are the fanboys with all the meaningless pro bowls and other selfish antics to justify their failed superhero. Oh and let’s not forget the most meaningless bs the fanboys spew about how he is good in the community GARBAGE!!!! Neither have ever won a game on sunday that matters. He is a fraud who has no clue how to win, lead or simply finish 4qtrs. tinker bells opinions are more relevant than softee the quitters. tinker bell is far tougher as well.

What is about this JBF site that acts as a strong magnet for Bucs trolls. One thing to be critical of poor play, but to just piss on good players for the sake of pissiing is a waste of beer! Go home to your real teams!

If you had any understanding of salaries, you would know how ridiculous of a statement this is. Smdh

  18. Bigherc73 Says:

Great to see we have quality young players on the oline but for the couch siting beer drinking probably can’t do a pushup 93 haters he is and always been one of the best in the league so if you can play better take your skills out there beat him out of his position then you can talk until carry on from your couch command center lmaooooo BUC4LIFE

  19. Buc1987 Says:

    Idiot.

Number one most typed insult of the JBF comments section!

Go Bucs. Go GMC and that new line!!!

  20. Jmarkbuc Says:

    Nutter

You can call me an idiot when Kwon starts making tackles….I’d take Khalil Mack any day.

  21. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I have high hopes for Cappa. I think he replaced Demar Dotson at some point this season.

And Dotson only has what? A year left?

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Jmarkbuc, try to keep in mind that Khalil Mack had a good DL in front of him. You’ll see what a difference that makes for Kwon this year.

(BTW, people can click my name to see my breakdown of the defense).

  23. Billy Bob Says:

Watch, Laugh and be amazed. Just scouted Cappa in the last preseason game against the Dolphins. Cappa made 2nd season DT 6’3″ 306 lb Vincent Taylor his own personal rag-doll. The only success that Vincent had was tackling Sims for a loss on a play that Cappa was a pulling guard and Vincent grabbed Cappa facemask and dragged him to the ground not allowing cappa to get to his block and preventing the center from blocking Vincent. However Vincent was called for defensive holding and gave the Bucs a 5 yards and a 1st down. on Passing plays while his fellow offensive line wer getting pushed back to the quarterback Cappa was still on the line of scrimmage with his DT not giving an inch. Stout is a good word for Cappa. Did he have a perfect game no. He needs work on getting to the linebackers on run plays and still needs practice identifying the blitz.

“What is about this JBF site that acts as a strong magnet for Bucs trolls.”

Division rivals are part of it. Another part is FSU haters (like Gator fans). I’m convinced people who feel Winston should be kicked out of football come here to troll.

And all of them use multiple usernames to make their numbers seem inflated.

For example, Reality-is-a-Beotch has had multiple usernames here. He tends to get himself booted over time, then creates a new one. In many cases, you will see the trolls mess up by posting the exact same thing under different usernames. Easy way to spot them!

But, you also have to keep in mind the dejected Buccaneers fans. Over the past ten years, a bunch of us have gone through the same stage. We eventually come out of it (I did, 87 did, Realist did).

Here’s how I usually react…when a season ends, like any other fan, if it was a bad season, I get a little negative. This usually lasts until I get a full picture of Free Agency…sometimes until the draft. But after that, I start looking for the positives.

After all, why bother watching at all if we have zero hope?

Once a roster is set, I try to feed the hope throughout the season. I’m realistic, not negative. For example, if we go 1-2 in the first three games, I’m happy. Those are some tough games, and even one win matters.

At this time of the year, its easy to spot the real trolls. They are the ones who never have anything good to say. They are the ones who disappear for 3-4 days after a win, but are highly visible after a loss. They focus their ire on certain players, not because the players always deserve it, but because the trolls are bigoted and their existence depends on getting a rise out of real fans.

Years ago, the official Buccaneers message boards had a great feature. They allowed us to click on a user and ignore them from that point on. I wish a blog could do the same, but I do not know of a blogging system that does. This one is WordPress (the best). I’m very familiar with this system (I use it for my author site), and I don’t know of a way.

    Hawaii, Nutter et al..

    Take a Xanax people….

I’m pretty sure the Glazers aren’t gonna read my post and Get on the phone with Oakland.

Pretty sure this is a fan site and not the Supreme Court.

I like Khalil Mack, wish we would’ve drafted him. As for Kwon, the play he made in Atl was freakin awesome. It was also the only remarkable play of his that I can put my finger on. I think he’s been underachieving since. He did jump on Swaggy, which is good, but way too little way too late.

Beautiful day here in NC, hope y’all find something fun to do. I am.

    Deuces.

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Billy, I agree with you. I think that as Cappa gets a little more experience, he;s going to get better and better. And I think he’s get that experience playing both Tackle and Guard. He may even end up as a starting guard untl he replaced Dotson.

And during the game against the Dolphins, he threw his man to the ground, just like he did in college.

Whatever role he ends up playing, he is going to be a beast!

  27. Billy Bob Says:

Yes he through Vincent to the ground. I think he through his player to the ground twice. However one interesting observation is that Cappa through Vincent to his left. When Cappa played LT he alway through his players to his left. It will be interesting to see if Cappa Hips allow him to throw a player to the right

I’ve always been a Khalil Mack fan, wish we would’ve drafted him. As for Kwon, the play he made in the Atl was freakin awesome but it’s the only remarkable one I can put my finger on. He seems to me to be underachieving since, and c’mon his tackling isn’t stellar.

All that being said, it’s a beautiful day here in NC. Gonna go out and do something fun, hope you do too.

  29. Rod Munch Says:

Cappa had a pretty low end combine and doesn’t really have that great of measurables, seemed like a real stretch to take the guy as highly as the Bucs did since he didn’t have anything close to a Marpet type of combine. However it’s good to hear he’s having a good camp and isn’t looking lost. From what I saw he looked fine against the Dolphins. I personally think he’s still a project guy, but if he’s really in the starter mix I hope it’s because he’s exceeded all expectations and not because the position is weak.

Hahaha. Best post of the afternoon, well played sir

  32. SOEbuc Says:

Why the hell do these people come to this site if they’re just gonna hate. I can see GMC killin it this year with JPP on one side and Vea/Allen on the other.

  33. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Why don’t one of you internet tuff guy buffoons go to his house and slap his wife and kids around since we know you won’t do it to his face, then you can see how really soft he is! You suckers couldn’t even handle playing in a middle school football game and you got the nerve to call him names because he smiles and helps other guys off the ground. Sapp was the nastiest dude on the field and you loved him but cried cuz he was too nasty to sign your poor little autographs! Sniff sniff whats that smell? Putty Tat!!! Nothing worse than manginas

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Jmarkbuc,

Yes, this is a Bucs site, but that doesn’t mean you can just say whatever nonsense you want and you won’t get called out for it. That’s kind of what makes this site great! Fact is, that was as stupid of a hypothetical trade as one could possibly imagine. Believe me, I’m not losing sleep over your post, but if I see something that’s dumb, I’m going to say something. I would expect the same towards me when I say something dumb. Everyone is so scared to say they were wrong, when in fact every single one of us would be horrible GM’s, scouts, owners, coaches, and players.

  35. Reach87 Says:

Good story about a rookie OL turned into a hate fest on a DT. The soft and finesse stuff you morons make up is sad. Go Bucs!

Yes your honor… Can I get my sentence reduced if I use a bunch of exclamation points?

All Buc fans are frustrated and rightly so. Makes them liable to say almost anything, none of wich really makes any difference.

As soon as I get 3-4 billion saved up, I’ll buy the team and solve, all our problems. Until then I ‘m probably gonna vent myfrustrations here like Ieverybody else.

Obviously it was a crazy trade idea. So what. It was a Sunday morning in the pre season. Been a Buc fan 40 yrs now. Running out of rah rah speeches to post. I’m a Buc Fan not a Buc geek….I don’t parse every dime of the salary cap. And I’m going to continue to call ’em like I see ’em…..

    Thanks for your advice….

  39. FrankPillow Says:

Gerald has been a model citizen and a very good football player for us. Yet fans treat him as the root of all losing. It isn’t all on him. Not even close.
Is he Sapp-nasty? No. Never had the chance to be that kind of player. Part of that is because the plan for him was shredded along with Brian Price’s hamstrings. Price was drafted to be the nasty. The alter ego. Price and McCoy never got their chance together. Not really. Both were robbed by early injuries. Then, we simply neglected to add meaningful talent around Gerald- until now.

  40. Neal Says:

Lol @ all these tough guys that think McCoy is soft. Y’all wouldn’t say s(p)it to his face if given the chance. I’m sure McCoy would love you to teach him all about the greatness you achieve mopping the bathrooms at Burger King.

  41. Josh Says:

While Lavonte is better, Kwon is 4 years younger and has significantly less of salary cap impact (still on his rookie contract). Raiders would probably prefer Kwon, as he has shown flashes of greatness. I still don’t like the trade though.

As for the GMC haters, what’s wrong with you? You can moan and complain all you want from your armchairs, but why would we want to kick a 6x Pro Bowler and 4x All-Pro player (3x first team) to the curb? Because you think he’s “soft?” GMC has performed at a consistent high level since entering the NFL and gives the Bucs all he has every time he’s on the field. It doesn’t take a genius to see the destructive force he is, which is why he has won all those awards and accolades.
