Dotson Paints Murky Picture Of Knee Recovery

August 6th, 2018

So what’s really going on with starting right tackle Demar Dotson, who is working in training camp largely outside of squaring off during team periods, aka live action?

It’s been four months since he had knee surgery that wasn’t considered major.

With opening day less than five weeks away, Dotson, per Dotson, doesn’t have a clear answer for fans.

He chatted Saturday with Zac Blobner of WDAE-AM 620.

“Probably about a few more weeks I’ll be good enough to be going in [11-on-11] full-go,” Dotson said.

Probably.

If three weeks is accurate, that means Dotson would miss the first three preseason games and likely all of them, since Week 4 is usually reserved for the bottom-of-the-roster hopefuls.

Dotson shared his dejection over the situation, primarily because he’ll have a new right guard next to him with very little or no experience — and short time on the field to “help drag those guys along.” It’s helping those guards, though, that they’re competing against Gerald McCoy every day in practice, Dotson said.

Man, the right side of the Bucs’ offensive line is a question mark. Unfortunately, Dotson’s first game is on the unforgiving turf of the Superdome, not known for being kind to knees.

    every knee surgery is major.

3 knee surgeries here, and it’s like a box of chocolates……

  3. Lee Says:

No preseason games even played and named like Gardner and Webster being mentioned with the first team is not good.

Bruh! Sometimes it’s like looking in a mirror and seeing your reflection 2 months later. Sloooooow! I’ve been saying this for months but wtfdik?!!!!!!!

The fact that we even have to consider playing Wester, Cappa or Evan smith is a crime in itself. And the owners actually re-upped Jason contract. Crazy!!!

Realistically only Barry sanders and mike Vick can play behind this oline if you can even call it an oline.

PS. You know if Winston was traded for Wentz it would make everyone happy. Wentz would fall to the bottom of the league in every statistical category but he’s a maga guy so the real Tampa fans will be happy anyway. Jameis can then go win SBs with his childhood team with a disgusting defense, a good running game and an oline, not a great oline but actually 5 yes 5 blockers. What a concept.

On the positive side I’ve read nothing but positive reports about Cole Gardner & Leonard Wester – both from OTAs and now with pads.

Also sounds like Alex Cappa is pushing Benecoch at RG; which means we likely have 2 capable players fighting for that spot since Benecoch has already shown he can start a game and not be a huge liability and very solid in the run game.

I’ll be more worried if we see a line that is getting destroyed in preseason. Until then I’m remaining hopeful about the new blood and competition at RG/RT.

  8. D-Rome Says:

I’ll never understand why athletes wait to get surgery. If it was me I would have done whatever I could in order to have that surgery done in January.

  9. Mike Johnson Says:

Looks like Dotson might have had consultations with..Easy Money Sweezy! I got the Bucs dumpin him after he…plays or not…this season.

  10. Bobby M. Says:

Dotson has been in the league a while….not concerned with him knocking the rust off fairly quickly, particularly if he’s going against, Spence, Curry, JPP, etc…..He’s hungry to get back out there….dude is peaking, he can prove value to squeeze a few extra bucks out of this league….OR….be washed up and off the radar. Dotson has always come across as a pro that sees the opportunity.

  11. Pete Mitchell Says:

Given his busted ass knees maybe its best to keep him out and let these young guys get some reps, since it’s very likely he won’t play all 16 games anyways…

  12. Crack3rK Says:

Zac Blobner??? lol… Sounds like the new name for the right side of the O-Line.

  13. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I love how people sitting behind a computer can criticize a guy they don’t know of milking a paycheck. Of all the guys that you can say are milking a paycheck, Dotson would be at the end of the list. It never ceases to amaze me how stupid some people can be.

  14. LargoBuc Says:

After spending resources to upgrade the defensive line in free agency, maybe we should have addressed the other side of the line in the draft. McGlinchey, Williams, Wynn, Hernandez etc one of them would have made a nice addition.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Man, the right side of the Bucs’ offensive line is a question mark.” Although it pains me, I’m with DB55 on this one. Joe, it’s not like this is one of those “Oh wow, what happened to the right side of our OLine?” questions. Licht really needs to pick up 1 very experienced OLineman before the season starts who can play BOTH guard & tackle.
Take a deep breath, guys. Every team has a question mark area. If guys don’t come back or stay healthy through three preseason games, then Joe fully expects Jason Licht to sing a body or two. That worked out very well in 2015, Cherilus and Hawley started for an O-line that ran the ball with ease. –Joe

  16. Lord Cornelius Says:

Agree with Joe on the O-line.

It’s rare that any team has their line stout at 5 spots. Even the Cowboys have a new rookie starting at RT with a injury liability at swing RT; and are moving Lae’l Collins to LG who has struggled to play OT. And their O-line is at least top 5 easily in the NFL.

In theory we really should only have 1 spot open for competition – and it’s one where we’ve been grooming Benecoch at; and a position where we added competitor with a 3rd round pick; and a position where we have Evan Smith worst case as a spot starter.

Dotson should be ready for week 1 – and he is definitely a injury concern – but unless all the media are just writing homer articles; it sounds like we have 2 guys in Wester/Gardner that could probably surprise some people and play adequately or better.

We don’t have enough cap to sign anyone significant; but if the injuries really end up that bad we will get more bodies.

  17. JimmyJack Says:

If worst case we got Evan Smith at RG we are good to go.

Dont care how minpr Dotson says it is knee problems end careers. We need somebody to step up at RT bigtime starting Thursday.

  18. BucEmUp Says:

D rome tell.me.about it..These guys always have surgeries long after the season is over and do it the next season at risk.

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Not overly concerned here. Dotson is a great guy but a marginal right tackle. I think one of the youngsters may play better. Again, put a TE over there. Just put a TE behind the right guard too. You ge a TE, you get TE, everybody gets a TE.

  20. BigMacAttack Says:

They have TEs out the azz. I bet Joe Dirt can play right tackle. Jk

Zac Blobner ? Sounds like a provence in Slovenia. Which was a state in the old Yugoslavia if anyone cares. Hey..DB55. Maga is good. Do I need to go over Economics 101 with you again ?

@jameISNOT I know the man personally, not in his character!

  25. DB55 Says:

    Cherilus?

Really? You know I luv you but now you’re just stretching the truth. Cherilus was AWFUL!!

“Well, if Bucs fans weren’t listening, they sure noticed that the lone change to the offensive line during the free agency land rush and free food buffet was backup tackle Cherilus retired after impersonating swinging saloon doors at Dallas.”

    Swing saloon doors indeed!

He was OK for a few games after they signed him. Fell off the cliff quickly.
