DJax Not Going Anywhere Soon

August 7th, 2018

No joke.

It seems some have really twisted the words of Bucs coach Dirk Koetter and began connecting non-existent dots that DeSean Jackson is benched or will be jettisoned.

For example, Chris Wesseling — who Joe likes a lot — of NFL.com had this for his lede graph on a recent story.

DeSean Jackson is on notice in Tampa.”

No, no, no, no, no.

Joe also got a Twitter from a loyal reader who forwarded a link from a source that isn’t exactly the Wall Street Journal claiming Jackson has been benched.

No, no, no, no, no.

Jackson isn’t going anywhere. Not this year.

Joe is guessing this started when recently, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter in describing how good of a training camp wide receiver Chris Godwin is having, said Godwin is good enough to start and that the Bucs have essentially four starters at wide receiver.

Nowhere did Koetter claim Godwin would be starting or that Jackson would be benched, demoted, or run off. Koetter was essentially bragging that he has the option of having four starting-caliber receivers (the fourth was Adam Humphries).

Yes, Godwin is talented as hell. Yes, he could be starting some games for the Bucs. No, that doesn’t mean Jackson has fallen out of favor.

It just means the Bucs are loaded at receiver.

Don’t think this organisation has ever had this many talented pass catchers. The Buzz is growing big time with Godwin but Jackson also seems to have some pep in his step so far in camp. Then there’s Justin Watson, who just looks like ANOTHER good young prospect. Licht and Koetter might not WANT to trade any of these guys away, but as the season approaches teams will start throwing out the offers.

  2. Kobe Faker Says:

“Now that soft tissue MEME Evans got paid, Bucs will be lucky to get 13 games per year from Hammy for the next 3 years. 53% catch rate Molasses is a injury waiting when he lands”

“Godwin, because of injury to the starters will get his targets end of the year. Chris will have the most receptions and yards in 2018…Should be in the slot CATCHING SLANTS AND SCREENS not little Hump and Djax!”

Teams are going to be monitoring the waiver wire to claim the WRs the bucs cut. Bobo, Reedy, or Martino would get snagged. And Watson would get plucked off our practice squad. Same goes for our LB cuts.

  4. zzbucs Says:

In every season injuries happen….enjoy the depth on the position and don´t overthink……..

  5. Monsdro727 Says:

    That’s real!!!! Love the Joe’s

  6. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Humphries could not make another nfl roster yet he is number 4…. thats not depth that’s just low standards

  7. T REX Says:

Let’s be honest, DJAX has been a total bust here. I imagine he’s doing punts and anything else he can do so he can get paid again next year. Horrible signing.

“Humphries could not make another nfl roster yet he is number 4…. thats not depth that’s just low standards”

Humphries is not the number four WR. He is the number three. The first string slot WR.

And your evaluation of him is completely off and unfounded.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Unless Licht gets a great trade offer, DJax is going nowhere…this year. His cap hit is too high.

  10. Godeep66 Says:

As I have said in the past, DJ is simply picking up a check and will then blame Dirk when he is run out of town. There will be a handful of teams that will fall for that and sign him for 3 years at 15 million guaranteed

  11. Pickgrin Says:

If a team that was desperate for a WR offered a starting caliber OG or OT in trade for DJax – Licht should take that deal without hesitation.

DJax is unlikely to be here next year and we still need help up front on offense. Bucs would likely recoup some cap space also in a deal like that – so win, win win.

  12. Wausa Says:

Amazing how loaded the Bucs are at receiver and Tight End.
Two years ago the Bucs had one of the worst combo of receivers and tight ends and now it has arguably the best.

Jason Licht deserves credit for turning a weakness into a strength.

  13. THETRUTH Says:

Joe push all off season to get DJ out hasn’t worked , cause Goodwin catches a winning touchdown in meaningless game we are to make him starter. DJ has been successful everywhere he is when the QB CAN reach him 30 yard out or more. He caught short throws from JW AND TOOK THose FOR YAK , let’s allow Goodwin to grow and prove himself more.

Hey Kobe how hard is it being that dumb? It must be rough.

    You’re an idiot

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

Pickgrin- Agreed. It’s really a good “problem” to have. I’m interested to see how this offense operates with the amount of talent at the skills positions. We need to score TDs not FGs.

    Bucsfanman Says:
“interested to see how this offense operates with the amount of talent at the skills positions. We need to score TDs not FGs”

We saw how that played out last year with “weapons” galore but a sub-par OLine and crappy running game. It all starts up front. If the the Oline still can’t run block nor protect the QB well enough – the offense (even with all these receiving weapons) will continue to struggle and look “out of sync” – especially in the red zone.

  18. reality-is-a-beotch Says:

when the wr corp was hit with injuries and they had to rely on a SLOW, LOW CEILING Humphries offensive coordinators league-wide were jumping with joy…. humphries is NOT a weapon in anyone’s mind outside of low standard buc fan

no one worships mediocrity like low standard bucfan…. Evans was screwed when he had to have that bum lining up with him. rewatch the tape. you fanboys sure like rewriting history to support mediocrity.

  19. Bucsfanman Says:

Pick, the only issue I take with that statement is that better play-calling could have mitigated some of those deficiencies. I agree whole-heartedly otherwise.

  20. AlabamaBucFan Says:

With Koetter and Smith’s jobs on the line, what benefit would they get to trade D-Jax. They might not enjoy even using a future draft pick if they lose this season. Makes no sense to trade him unless they get a player in return, which I do not think will happen with a 10m cap hit.

  21. Ghastly Bucs Says:

According to Rick Stroud, Godwin is the #2 opposite of Evans. That would make DeSean the #3 in the slot position. If the Bucs run 2 TEs then Jax will see some time on the sidelines.

  22. Godeep66 Says:

Does it really matter who we have as a receiver when we have a dumb as a bag of hammers QB throwing the ball?

  23. Casey Morgan Says:

Doesn’t matter who starts where. Most WRs raise their hands after a long run / bomb down field asking to come out for a play or two. Everyone will get plenty of reps…

  24. gilhealy Says:

Godeep, you’re a persistent little fella.

  25. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Pick that’s why you call plays to hide or atleast camouflage some of those weaknesses. Let’s see if Welcome Back Koetter can or will do that to help out the offense. He supposedly did it in Hotlanta before coming here.

  26. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

    gilhealy that’s what she said!

  27. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Godeep you’re as straight as a bag of 3 dollar bills!

  28. 1sparkybuc Says:

Great weapons for passing. Hopefully the ground Attalid will prove effective

  29. DB55 Says:

So let me get this straight, the majority of you guys would trade Djax instead of Humphries?

You can trade hump and EASILY replace his skill set with Bobo or Martino. I say trade him to NE they have 2 WRs at best and we need oline men.

  30. webster Says:

    Joe

Didnt you just write an article a few days ago praising the play of godwin and because of it you were of the mind that djax was on the trading block? You had a quick change of heart i see.

  31. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

webster might have been the other Joe

  34. Trench War Says:

Seems reporters are a giddy bunch when it comes to creating controversy, and we’re not immune to it nationally or locally. Remember, some of us have said we’re hoping for a QB controversy by week 4, and it wasn’t me.

  35. Kobe Faker Says:

“All this receiving talent and we still cant score in the red zone? Whats up with that?”

    Kobe Faker

“Kobe, Dont you dare blame our HC Koetter”

    Klueless Koetter Apoligists

  36. Dan Says:

I’ll take Godwin full time over DJAX any day.

  37. gilhealy Says:

DB55, no doubt Hump is the one expendable. He made the most of his opportunities, but he’s out classed now. Evans, Jackpot, Godwin and Watson should be the main 4, with Martino, Bobo, or Sergio Bailey rounding it out. No need to keep Hump for special teams either. We’ve got plenty of juice there as well. Dirk said he’ll play the best. If that’s the case, Hump’s not a shoe in by any stretch.

  38. Dan Says:

    4-12

  39. americasenabler Says:

read that article. They are really using DJAX in the slot. You can’t make this stuff up. Bucs coaching and GM… this whole franchise is an embarrassment.

  40. BucsFan90 Says:

godeep66 we get it Fitz is terrible (Only qb in NFL history to throw 6 or more INTS in a game without even a single TD. Had the worst td:int ratio in the league in 2015 and 2016. Even as a backup last year, who can forget McClown and Fitz throwing interceptions on literally CONSECUTIVE plays? 😂😂 Sure Fitz makes a lot of dumb decisions and has done throught his career, but guess what he went to harvard so he cant be that dumb. At the very least, you can always count on the guy to provide much-needed comedic relief to the fans

  41. americasenabler Says:

Also, the BUZZ is Licht trying to save his job and get an extension. Trying to make himself out to be some kind of draft guru hahahahaha Glazer will be like we paid how much for a slot receiver?!

    Good luck Licht hahahahahaha

^^^You’re right and why people would be ok with this I have no idea. You have a huge playmaker on the sideline. Hilarious!!! You can’t get more inept as a coaching staff or front office. WOW!

  43. americasenabler Says:

Am I the only one that sees what’s going on?
    1. Licht sign DJAX who is NOT a fit for Koetter’s offense. Fully knowing JW can’t hit the deep ball, we all knew this about him from FSU days BUT Licht still signs DJAX. Koetter this proceeds to run DJAX on drag routes which is fak criminal.

    2. Licht sign Goodwin which to his credit is a better WR for Kotter’s offense BUT not a good compliment to Evans and in no way adds explosiveness that DJAX can. He’s one of a kind!

    3. Goodwin is getting “BUZZ” because Bucs are planting those seeds to the media. Licht wants to look like he can draft a starter in later rounds (he’s been woeful at this and trying to save his job/get longer extention)

    4. At the expense of benching a dynamic playmaker that if used correctly (Koetter can’t do this) then you have 5k to 6k QB and 30 plus TDs.

Joe you mentioned explosive plays. I beg you, BEG find 1 explosive play from Goodwin. You’ll find… 1. Last play of the season. That’s it. Goodwin is good but he’s decent Ike Hillard THAT’S IT!

  44. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Happy to tell you enabler, he had a huge one against the Stankin Putty Tats so that’s 2

  45. BucEmUp Says:

You already know what is going to happen. Same thing that happened last year with Doug Martin continuing to get the heavier workload although he wasn’t as productive.

Djax is going to be clearly out played by Chris Godwin, and Dirk is going to continue to keep Godwin on the bench in 2wr/2te sets.

  46. TDTB Says:

DJax to either Redskins for Perine and Colt McCoy or to Browns for Carl Nassib and Tyrod Taylor
