A Very Different Look At JPP Today

August 15th, 2018

Jason Pierre-Paul stretches his hamstrings with Vinny Curry (right) before practice against the Tennessee Titans

Rarely seen stuff at Bucs practice today as the team clashed in Nashville in full pads against the Tennessee Titans.

The teammates of Jason Pierre-Paul, who has already built a reputation in Tampa as an intense practice player, got to see what he’s like in a more competitive session.

JPP turned it a couple of notches in muggy and hot conditions — in more ways than one.

Joe didn’t see JPP school Titans tackle Taylor Lewan in 1-on-1 work, but Joe heard about JPP talking a ton of trash about it, including explaining to Lewan in colorful language about how he’s missing fingers and still smoked Lewan.

But it wasn’t just talking. After a relatively slow start to his practice, JPP was pouring it on as the Bucs’ defense, Joe’s focus through much of the day, was a force with multiple sacks of Marcus Mariota, one by JPP. (No tackling to the ground allowed)

The practice ended with JPP getting to address the entire Bucs team with a motivating send off. It was rare because Joe was permitted to be within about ten yards.

The address was filled with a lot of screaming “MFing” but the message was centered on how much JPP loves football and wants to win. When it comes to intensity, think Jameis Winston pregame speech — not a typical end-of-practice address.

“It’s incredible, man. We got a guy who literally every time he gets on the field he wants to get better,” said, Lavonte David, who played in college with JPP. “Now he’s trying to prove it more because he’s on a new football team. And he’s trying to prove his loyalty to us immediately, not later.”

David said the trash talking from JPP might have surprised some Bucs because he wasn’t doing it at first in Tampa and he doesn’t talk a lot of crap to his own teammates.

“But you get a guy to a certain level, things come out of him, and you don’t always know what that’s going to be,” David said. “But with JPP, you’re getting an intensity and a desire to be great that you don’t see everywhere in the NFL.”

Joe asked Jameis Winston about any personal relationship he has with JPP, and Jameis said it’s clear football is really important to him. “We look up to guys like that and we love his tenacity and his enthusiasm,” Jameis said of JPP.

What might be most interesting about all this JPP liveliness is that he told everyone when he got to Tampa that he wasn’t a talker, just a guy who comes to work hard.

    I don’t think I’m worried anymore that JPP wasn’t at OTA’s.

  2. Humpty Dumpty Says:

Great stuff…the more the veterans can teach and influence the rookies, the better imo

  3. GP Says:

    More please

  4. McBuc Says:

Maybe JPP will have the same effect Hardy Nickerson did back in the day.

  5. jmarkbuc Says:

Glad we have JPP but what do Lavonte’s quote’s say about the culture here?

It’s incredible, man. We got a guy who literally every time he gets on the field he wants to get better,”—WHAT A CONCEPT smh

“But with JPP, you’re getting an intensity and a desire to be great that you don’t see everywhere in the NFL. WHY THE HELL NOT? AT LEAST HERE IN HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY , don’t really care about the other 31 teams.

  6. firethecannons Says:

    Yes please more please

  7. Defense Rules Says:

@McBuc … “Maybe JPP will have the same effect Hardy Nickerson did back in the day.” Man I’d love it if that’s the case. Hardy took a back seat to no one, and it sounds like JPP is in precisely the same mold. Bucs need a lot more guys exactly like that.

  8. m0j0 Says:

Loving the JPP trade more and more every day! A guy with his kind of talent and veteran leadership is exactly what this defense needs to turn the corner!

  9. Pete Mitchell Says:

Did JPP ANd LVD attend the same junior college? I didn’t know they had spent time together. That’s kind of cool.

  10. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Good sh1t.

I’m with Joe in terms of the desperate feelings of “please do anything to change this losing sh1t culture we’ve had”

If that means JPP and a rookie 4th rounder taking over the locker room then so be it.

If it means having Tony Dungy come in and serve morning bagels and coffee lock him up on that contract lol

  11. bucinA Says:

Well, is it the end of the friggin world or what. Two mentions of Jameis Winston
and no “America’s Quarterback”. You’re not doing Jameis any favors by making that reference. It’s simply an unrealistic expectation, almost delusionary.

Good story about JPP though. I want more of that.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, Joe…you’re saying JPP is an improvement on Swaggy?

Also…what’s great about the JPP trade is that Licht (through draft day trades) got the 3rd round pick back and we got Cappa.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

I hope JPP is our BEAST come game time this year.

  14. Neal Says:

“Joe didn’t see JPP school Titans tackle Taylor Lewan in 1-on-1 work, but Joe heard about JPP talking a ton of trash about it” The Bucs have a video of it up on their Instagram. Good stuff from JPP.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

What’s the scoop on GMC and his limp? Was he goin full today Joe?

  16. Dewey Selmon Says:

Pete Mitchell. they both went to JuCo in Ft Scott, Kansas. David was supposed to go to Miami with his
buddies, but he didn’t have the grades.

  17. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

    Hell to the yeah

  18. Pryda... sec147 Says:

So pumped from reading this just wish Vita Vea was able to be practicing too

  19. Bucnjim Says:

JPP is everything I have always wished McCoy would have been to this team for the last 8 years. Not a hater just a realist! The best word to describe JPP is relentless……Hope it wears off on the rest of the D.

  20. BucEmUp Says:

I can’t wait for him to explode about MIKE Smith’s soft coverage

  21. Destinjohnny Says:

    Finally since Sapp….
    Someone with a pulse

  22. Buccfan37 Says:

Seeing is believing in games that count in the standings so I’ll temper my expectations until then. The proof is when the pudding sets. But the anticipation is through the roof.

  23. Wes Says:

Of course JPP runs his mouth on the field against another team! When you’re one of the best and you know it, your mouth gets going from time to time lol! I love it. Bring that nasty back!!!

  24. Lucious Selmon Says:

“Now he’s trying to prove it more because he’s on a new football team. And he’s trying to prove his loyalty to us immediately, not later.”

So refreshing–a big change from kicker-heckling, tree-humping swaggy the hockey troll baker.

  25. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“What might be most interesting about all this JPP liveliness is that he told everyone when he got to Tampa that he wasn’t a talker, just a guy who comes to work hard.” – J0E

Maybe he came at first thinking this team was a bad place to be, and once he got here, he realized how close they really are. He’s excited.

Not to mention the environment is much, much better in Tampa than in NY.

  26. Godeep66 Says:

Keep JW away from JPP…. the dude is already missing fingers and you never know when crazy short yellow bus JW bites off a few more with the “taste a W” psycho speech.

  27. Crabberbill Says:

Best 3rd round pick ever !! Jason should get a 10 year extension!! The best DE we’ve had since Simeon Rice !! Vita Vea was my pick at # 7 too !!Put him in at the goal line at FB and watch him score touchdowns, lol !!!

  28. Crabberbill Says:

I forgot to mention, we love you Tony & family. Tampa is your city forever !!!
