Asked About Jameis Winston, Brentson Buckner Uses A Jerry Rice Comparison

August 29th, 2018

Outside of pounding four or five beers with Dirk Koetter accompanied by a heartfelt conversation, or being invited to the cheerleaders’ holiday party, Joe can’t imagine anything more entertaining in the world of the Bucs than a chat with defensive line coach Brentson Buckner.

The former stud defensive linemen and four-year sports radio host lets it fly like no other.

Sure, other coaches are candid with media, but Buckner is engaging, entertaining and informative, and he seems to be a genuinely nice guy. (Listeners to the Ira Kaufman Podcast know of Joe’s encounter with Buckner in Las Vegas before he joined the Bucs’ staff.).

After training camp closed, Joe asked Buckner about a subject he’s rarely asked about: Jameis Winston, America’s Quarterback.

Joe pointed to the practice field where Jameis was putting in extra work on his own time. Joe asked Buckner for his impressions of Jameis after a months to observe him, and what he thinks of Jameis when he sees him training after practice and signing autographs as long as he can.

“That’s what being a professional is all about,” Buckner said of Jameis. “These doors lock from the inside not out. That’s part of your job, whether you want to do it or not. You’re supposed to work [on your own]. I played with Jerry Rice. That was the norm to see Jerry out there catching 100 balls before practice and 100 balls after practice. That’s what the great ones do. We don’t have a skill problem. We have a time problem. How do you make up the time?

“If me and you are the same speed, same size, how do I get better than you? I work when you’re not working. That’s what Peyton Manning does. That’s what Drew Brees does. That’s what Cam Newton does. If we all just practice the same two hours, we never gain ground on one another. Who makes up for those when nobody’s looking? And those are the most important things because [working on your own] you can be critical of yourself; the spotlight is not on you.

“The hardest person for you to ever criticize is the one you see in the mirror every day. Once as a player you realize that’s the guy you should be more critical of, you’re going to become a better player and a better person.”

Gotta love Buckner.

Indeed, Jameis commands all kinds of respect around One Buc Palace.

Jameis is the man! Go Bucs!

  2. Horse Liver Says:

    Love coach Buck.

  3. BigMacAttack Says:

All it takes to light a giant fire is a single spark. There it is.

  4. John Prowell Says:

If preseason Jameis is the guy we’re getting for 13 games, and he stays that way all the way through – this team will have a winning record. He’s not doing well, he’s dominating. The hardest thing now is having 24 days of no drills, no throws, no reads or timing drills. No meetings or communication are the black icing on that miserable cake. If he owns it, keeps owning it, and remembers who he’s letting down things will work out very well.

The kid needs go away for good. This Jameis we’re seeing in 2018 is a different guy.

  5. SB Says:

I hope Buck’s fire infests the Bucs.

  6. DanBucsFan Says:

Amen John Prowell. I agree 100%

  7. stpetebucsfan Says:

Several careers may get really enhanced this year. If our DL plays as well as we hope the entire defense will be dramatically improved. That puts Buck in the driver’s seat for any DC openings.

Of course if Jameis plays like we are starting to believe he will…and Bucks DL turns out to be half as badarse as he is…the defense will look good and Smitty’s career gets resurrected. If he gets another shot as an HC somewhere Buck will surely be a top candidate to take Smitty’s spot. Of course LB coach Mark Duffner is also rumored to be a strong candidate for a DC spot.

And then there is DB coach Jon Hoke…I feel certain that Joe would support Hoke for a DC because of how he has developed our DB’s. LMAO. Sorry Joe just had to blow off a little snark there.

  8. Bucnut2 Says:

May I remind everyone that Winston has the 3rd best QB rating of the BUCS QB’s this preseason!!! We should be talking up the Ryan’s as they have played better. Let’s move inform Winton hype and evaluate based on performance! The most important tt is WINS and Winston doesn’t have many.

  9. Bucnut2 Says:

    stat is wins

  10. Bucnut2 Says:

Oh and by the way. So far all of this man love for Buck is misplaced. With MUCH better talent, Bucs 30th in the NFL in sacks this preseason!

  11. Miguel Grande Says:

Bucnut, yours preseason stats are for losers!

  12. I Bleed Pewter Says:

Listen, that is all fine and dandy. Jameis is a spectacular role model, I get it, but the question is, can he put a team on his back and win? ..great QB’s don’t need the team to be perfect to win. ..and 3 years in we’re still not winning.

  13. I Bleed Pewter Says:

    …and I also like Buckner

  14. AZBucsFan4Lyfe Says:

Don’t know what stats he is talking about:

Winston: 30-of-41 (73.2 percent) for 388 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions

Fitzpatrick: 17-of-28 (60.7 percent) for 183 yards, no touchdowns, no interceptions

Griffin: 34-of-48 (70.8 percent) for 367 yards, three touchdowns, no interceptions

    Doesn’t look 3rd place to me…….lol.

  15. Buc68 Says:

I wonder what stat Bucnuts is referring to.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

I was at that game when Warren Sapp took out both Jerry Rice AND Steve Young, it was amazing! That flag on Sapp for the Rice tackle still p/o’s me, and the fact that Jerry Rice has said for year that Sapp injured him on purpose, pure nonsense. Also Sapp didn’t grab the facemask, he grabbed the side of the helmet, which as far as I know isn’t illegal.

Watch the play here, go all the way to the end and they’ll show a 3rd angle where you can see Sapp doesn’t get the facemask. Yet Rice still cries about it today saying he’s angry Sapp didn’t apologize to him for an “illegal” tackle, and note Rice doesn’t say a facemask since even he knows that it wasn’t a facemask.

  18. Back2bucball Says:

Jameis, you are going to have to really put the work in and have to come back after 3 on a whole new level in order to get these wanna be fans to accept you. Come out with your hair on fire as they say and don’t make any more bone headed decisions on or off the field and win games! They will come around

  19. BigMacAttack Says:

Bucnut needs to put down the pipe

  20. Rod Munch Says:

    Bucnut2 – You’re literally fake news.

    Jameis Winston – 126.9 rating
    Ryan Griffin – 113.8 rating
    Ryan Fitzpatrick – 79.9 rating

Winston has the 4th highest preseason passer rating in all of football, and is #1 for those with at least 40 passes.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Humm, I thought my comment above didn’t post because of the YouTube video, so I edited it and reposted it, and neither showed up, now they show up. So anywho feel free to ignore the repost, but enjoy the video.

Also that game against the 49ers was the hottest game I’ve ever been too. It was really hot and for some reason really windy, which did not help cool things down, it felt like someone had a blow dryer in your face. My sissy yankee friend literally went to the ER that night for sun poisoning. What a wimp.

  22. destinjohnny Says:

why do I think he is the next head coach?

  23. tnew Says:

So… I guess, by the BucNut logic, Winston is responsible for the one loss vs the Lions, he could’ve played defense (where was he on the return TD against the Bucs??? on the bench??) in the second half, the team obviously needed help and there aren’t any rules against it, so Winston could’ve defended better. Just give Fitz the second game, why??? Obviously its the beard. The beard is worth a win. Griffin gets the first preseason game because he had a game winning drive. So if you use those stats, Winston would be number 3. Haters got to hate.

  24. Jeffbuc Says:

Rod munch that was my first bucs game I ever went to. If I was jameis I would have all the bubble receivers home addresses and while he is gone for three weeks I would be paying them to come run the route tree to keep his timing. They know all the plays and verbiage so he could stay focused and get reps of the plays and keep his timing going. And I’m sure the receivers would love to do it to work with a starting qb stay in shape in case there phone rings. Or an injury happens. Hopefully he already has thought of this if not joe you might need to drop him that little nugget.

  25. Im tired and 87 is right Says:

Bucnut if you actually watched the preseason games like most true Bucs fans did you would see that probably 90% of Jameis incompletions were due to drops. He was spot on accurate and probably the most impressive I have seen in all QB play during the preseason. Go Bucs!

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’m as excited as anybody about our PS performance. Better to play well and win a couple than lose them all. But it’s the freaking PRE SEASON.

Those lauding Moncken’s play calling are deluding themselves. He MAY be a good play caller but PS is NO barometer. Coaches league wide are not showing their real defenses and offenses…teams are FAR more concerned with seeing certain players in certain situations…winning is literally secondary to learning all about your team. That’s true of the Bucs as well and so Moncken’s play calling had to recognize that. That’s not a slam on Monken who I really like but simply a recognition of reality.

I get those who believe all HC’s should surrender play calling duties for time management reasons. OK I don’t agree or disagree with that…I understand it for sure but plenty of HC’s have successfully done it.

Somehow some folks believe men who have very successfully performed in the NFL for decades have all of the sudden forgotten how to coach. Sorry I just can’t buy it.

  27. Tampaspicer Says:

Rod Munch I was at that game when Sapp took out Young and Rice.

  28. Buc’nIrishman Says:

I’m proud right now. Nice job fellas. My real Bucs fans and my team family just shutdown ol Bucnut2. Lmao. Y’all made him cry and he can’t even respond. Hopefully he is just searching for a new team. As the majority or it seems needs to. Again I’m proud. Now for the rest of the babies. Get onboard or walk the plank. It’s a Bucs life for a lot us. Support our team and fan brothers or buc off!! I feel sad for a lot of them. Other half make me smile because they are trolls from a rival team that is starting to get scared and getting shots while they can. The sun is rising in front of us and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will start to dominate and not look back for years to come. Ok I’m done with my rant. Beer almost out anyway. Cheers to my real fans.

    Proud Bucs fan,

    Rick(insert snoop lyric here)

  29. Rod Munch Says:

Tampaspicer – That was truly an awesome game wasn’t it? That was the game to start the 5-0 run to begin the season which ended in a playoff victory. It was my first year with season tickets, and we were placed in an area that was surrounded by visiting fans, which meant every week was a war. Anywho for that SF game do you remember it being so ungodly hot and windy at the same time? I know I didn’t make it up since I was sunburnt to a crisp and my yankee buddy had to go to the hospital for sun poisoning like a real crybaby, had he told me he was going to do so I’d have physically blocked him and instead made him buy some aloe. What a wimp. It was all downwill from there with our friendship, I couldn’t respect a man that would run to an ER over a sunburn. Pitiful.

Jeffbuc – Awesome, another guy there, let me know what you recall of the weather that day. Hopefully it doesn’t stick out so I can track down my former friend and remind him that he’s a wuss.

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

He’s been putting in the work and it has shown in preseason. Hopefully, it will continue upon his return in week 4 or whenever he returns.
Jerry Rice put in the work and it is why he’s the GOAT.

  31. Godeep66 Says:

So much press for a suspended backup QB at best. Time waster.

  32. Bob in Valrico Says:

I like the message in the last paragraph about looking in the mirror and being your own critic. Buckner is gonna try to get the most out of you one way or the
    other.

  33. Razor Ramone Says:

Yea, I was there too, really hot. Sapp, Brooks and that defense served notice that day.

  34. Anonymous Says:

This pre season limbo status for Jameis has created an opportunity for the second and third team players to gain valuable exposure to a first team qb. This can only help develop them into better players, as the exposure will show them better throws to catch and top quality placements of the ball. An added benefit is also that those not placed on the practice squad will be able to assist him in keeping sharp during his three week servitude of his suspension. Hopefully, Jameis will learn from this experience to keep his hands to himself, and never allow himself to be put into a questionable position ever again

  35. Blind Melon Says:

    This… to everything –

“…If me and you are the same speed, same size, how do I get better than you? I work when you’re not working…”
