Will Koetter Follow Patriots Model Or Play Scared With Jameis In Preseason Finale?

July 18th, 2018

Joe had some fun over the weekend watching the video linked here. It’s all 26 pass attempts by Tom Brady during the fourth preseason game of the 2016 season.

That’s right, it was Game 4 of the preseason when top talent is usually rested in favor of a bunch of soon-to-be Enterprise car rental agents, beer truck drivers, furniture movers and grad students. You know, the skill-challenged, camp-meat guys that hope its not the finale of their NFL careers.

Brady was on the field playing behind a changing group of offensive linemen — and taking a couple of hits — because he was going to be suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season. The Patriots wanted him to get the work.

So what about America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston?

He’ll be on his couch, banished from the Bucs and the NFL for the first three weeks of the season after accepting a three-game suspension and the NFL’s unofficial sex offender label.

So will Jameis play in that final preseason game, which happens to be a Thursday night home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars?

It’s a Dirk Koetter decision and probably a Team Glazer decision. The $21 million due Jameis in 2019 is guaranteed for injury. So a major injury in that meaningless game could be very costly for the Bucs and their ownership.

Will anyone consider the Bucs fans paying to see that game? Hahahahaha. Joe had a good laugh typing that!

If it’s any indication, Doug Martin was awaiting a three-game suspension to start last season and Koetter didn’t play him in the preseason finale.

    WOW!!!

    That’s a hefty gamble. 21 MILLION.

I guess for those who still believe Jameis is the Messiah and the ONLY QB available who could play successfully for the Bucs it’s a no brainer.

For those of us who have lost trust in Fameis after ALL the behavior issues and the subsequent lying that took place this year I’d have some kind of insurance policy.

And in fact…celebrities and organizations have gone as far as Lloyds of London to insure all manner of stuff including things like legs and other arcane things.
And of course there are a lot of policies written each year for promising college seniors in case they are injured before the draft and cannot play again.

So I don’t suppose the Glazers haven’t thought about this. They will either buy some insurance or in their case…so much wealth and cash flow they may simply “self insure”.

Lots of questions….LOTS of $$$$…and no real definitive answers.

  2. Pete I Says:

“after accepting a three-game suspension and the NFL’s unofficial sex offender label.”

Accepting? unofficial? So the NFL gives out un-official labels. Well, the NFL said Jameis was suspended for “touching the driver in an
inappropriate and sexual manner without her consent”. That’s the league’s label that Jameis did not appeal. –Joe

The turnover toucher needs no playing time in that game, Fitzmagic/tragic and his back up…the Ryan needs the work.

  3. Lamarcus Says:

Yes get the most work u can get him to do. Damn Fitztragic.

And u know this team follows everyone’s blueprint anyway without a identity of their own

  4. Dapostman Says:

He should play somewhat in every pre season game.

  5. Eric Says:

No way should they play Fitz the last game.

And not much in the other games either IMO. Where are we if he goes down? He’s a veteran, doesn’t need the work. Knows the offense. He did just fine in reserve duty last year after not much work in preseason.

  6. Pete I Says:

Well, the NFL said Jameis was suspended for “touching the driver in an
inappropriate and sexual manner without her consent”. That’s the league’s label that Jameis did not appeal. –Joe

    ——————

Well then Joe, it sounds quite official since the NFL “officials” said it and did it.

  7. BFFL Says:

    Pete

You believe everything the NFL says? If NFL had evidence then it would be at least 6 games..maybe even 9. This was simply the NFL’s attempt to sweep a sensitive subject underneath the carpet in today’s me too climate

  8. Pete I Says:

Well BFFL, I believe that the NFL – officially – handed America’s Choir Boy a 3 game suspension for “touching the driver in an
inappropriate and sexual manner without her consent” That I believe. How much evidence they had is irrelevant. And the justice system plea deals all the time with little evidence. So to the NFL.

A judge doesn’t have to give the maximum at sentencing, you are still guilty weather you appeal or accept the verdict. It’s still an official label.

  9. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“The $21 million due Jameis in 2019 is guaranteed for injury.” – JOE

Actually, quick question…doesn’t the suspension cancel the guaranty? I mean, I know they would still have to pay him if injured or if they play him in 2019, but if they cut him without injury?

(not that I want him cut)

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The NFL did something it has never done before. They negotiated a suspension with a player without the appeal process being invoked.

That tells us that they had no proof, even after reviewing all information, phone records, witness accounts etc. Otherwise, they would have had zero need to negotiate.

So play that on your fiddle.

  11. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Pete I Says:
“A judge doesn’t have to give the maximum at sentencing, you are still guilty weather you appeal or accept the verdict.”

A judge does not negotiate a contract either. the DA might. Attorneys might. But not the judge.

    The NFL did.

And seriously, if the NFL had proof of guilty, would they really care if he appealed? Nope.

Innocent until proven guilty, and it was not proven.

  12. Jeffbuc Says:

Yup Pete he is guilty the nfl suspended him so he is 100% guilty. The nfl is the law. Why are you so angry about this. I can just feel the hate oozing off your post. Calm down you me and the nfl have no clue what really happened. So I am not going to judge. A billion dollar business decided 3 games was fare punishment. So I will accept that punishment and move on. And not keep crying about nothing factual every article. Suspension is done winston will still be the starting qb. So move on from it or go be a fan of another team if it bothers you that bad. There football players not saints.

  13. Defense Rules Says:

@Bonzai … “That tells us that they (NFL) had no proof.” Seriously Bonzai? No proof? Do you REALLY believe Jameis & his handlers would’ve negotiated a settlement if there was ‘no proof’? (He lost millions because of this ‘hassle’, but more importantly, he lost a good chunk of his ‘reputation’ (such as it already was) AND he lost the trust of management, coaches, team mates & many fans because of his lying about it (and cover-up). Time to quit beating that dead horse & move on to bigger and better things.

Far as Jameis playing in the last preseason game goes, why not? He could get injured in any game or even by tripping walking down the sidewalk. He’s getting paid handsomely to play QB. Suck it up & do EVERYTHING you can to be as prepared as you can to help the T-E-A-M once he returns. And the same BTW goes for Fitz … he needs to be super-prepared to start the season. None of this saving QBs for Game 1 or similar BS. Baptism by fire! NO MORE EXCUSES.

  14. Jeffbuc Says:

I swear this is the biggest bunch of whining football fans I have ever seen. I would swear I was reading an ESPN article with a bunch of different teams fans chiming in. But this is are own fans website being so whiny and negative. It’s getting old and it’s the same 3-4 people. You are just as bad as tmax was towards McCoy towards jameis. So move on like joe is he is typing articles about the future will he play in the preseason.

  15. Buccaneer scotty Says:

I think Fitzpatrick should get all the time with the starter because he is the starting quarterback the 1st 3 games. Let Winston play in the 4th quarter of the 1st 3 games and all of the 4th game. Teach him to suffer and humility

  16. Roy T. Buford Says:

Been thinking about this. Glad Joe brought it up…can’t count on Jones/Auman to get into analysis. What I would hope for/expect for pre-season:

Practice: Give Fitz the most reps, followed by Griffin, then Winston, then Allen. Fitz needs to work things most with the starters for the first three games.

Pre-Season Games: Start Fitz, then Jameis for first half of Games 1/2/3. If Fitz does well in first two drives in Game 3…get him out of there. Griffin gets most reps in 2nd half of Games 1/2/3, then on to Allen mid 4th quarter. Game 4 start Griffin and give him the first half. Allen Second half. DO NOT PLAY WINSTON OR FITZ.

When Winston is back for Game 4 regular season…if Fitz is doing well and they are winning because he is scoring, make Winston earn starting job back at practice. Let Fitz play to the bye week (one more game), and go from there.
But Winston moves to #2 reps at practice with a chance to get startin job back.

  17. BoJim Says:

I have a feeling we’re going to see a whole lot of Ryan Griffin in the last game.

  18. Mike Johnson Says:

Ok Guys. CUT IT OUT AND KNOCK IT OFF!!! Jameis not only deserves his suspension, He deserves more. Guys been gettin away with stuff ever since his Jr High all the way thru college. Now he see’s its hard to cover Sh.. up!! One more screw up and I hope they ship his A.. to Siberia to play for the GD Polar Bears!!!!!!!!!!!! And Just..tus..for all.

  19. gp Says:

There is one person in Tampa that knows Jameis and his character better than any of us by a long shot
Apparently, she thinks enough of him to marry him and have a child with him
All of this decided after the announcement of the “Uber incident”
She has been his girlfriend since high school

    I defer to her judgement

  20. stpetebucsfan Says:

    gp

Nice try but is simply doesn’t fly.

First I do not believe we should bring up Jameis family. NONE of this is her fault.
She is victimized like the rest.

I do not know her…I shall not judge her personally.

But I need to add gp…have you heard of battered wife syndrome? It’s actually pretty common. I’m not even suggesting that Fameis has mistreated this woman in any way….just that first we shouldn’t even be talking about his wife and secondly wives in general do not get presumption of lack of bias….and in fact spouses tend to be very prejudiced for understandable reasons.

I like Jameis still just don’t trust him. I believe he has the talent but doesn’t have a lick of common sense.

  21. gp Says:

    WAKE UP TAMPA!
You just heard it from stpete!
    The newest allegation!
Jameis is a wife beater too!

  22. gp Says:

    SMDH

  23. Trench War Says:

If I were coach, Jameis would split play with Griffin, and Allen. Koetter can’t afford to go into the regular season afraid of preseason injuries. Keep Fitz fresh and let the three backups get the reps. Jameis “IS” a backup at this point until he becomes the starter again. If Jameis gets hurt in preseason then he has 3 weeks of the regular season to get healthy. If he doesn’t get healthy by then, what does it matter anyway? We’ll either be 0-3 and out of it anyway, or we could be 2-1 and in no hurry to bring him back.

  24. BucNole Says:

IF there was no injury clause in his contract I would def play him at least 3 qtrs in that last game. . . but it is a big risk for sure – especially if you have 3rd team OL in the game.

On the Jameis noise – The NFL only needs reasonable doubt to render a decision – and while there was probably no real hard evidence they made the decision based on interviews with the individuals involved. Its kinda the same way they nailed Brady by saying – he was more likely than not to know what was going on.
As far as an appeal – history suggests the NFL always wins – and I have to wonder if Winstons attrys or someone from the NFL just said – If you appeal you get 6 games instead of 3.

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

    gp

This will be my last response to you because you have SERIOUS reading comprehension skills.

I’m not even suggesting that Fameis has mistreated this woman in any way….

So you probably missed the other part of that post.

“First I do not believe we should bring up Jameis family.”

But you moron gp were the one WHO DID bring up Jameis family. The shame is yours not mine idiot.
