Mark Dominik: Bucs Are “Playoff Type Of Wild Card Type of Team”

July 14th, 2018

“Mark, we got this.”

Former Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik doesn’t hide from the fact that he pulls for the Buccaneers and is good friends with the man who replaced him, Jason Licht.

And Dominik has assessed Tampa Bay’s roster moves and likes what he sees. On WDAE-AM 620 this week, Dominik played Bucs cheerleader — and simultaneously heaped a pile of pressure on the current regime.

Dominik, now a host with SiriusXM NFL Radio, sees the Bucs as a serious playoff contender.

“Certainly the additions to the defensive line are going to help a lot, in terms of having a little more of a rotation and a big-time concern with JPP coming off the edge for offensive coordinators,” Dominik said. “So it feels like a team that seems like they’re a lot better on paper. But we don’t like to win on paper; we like to win on the field, right?

“And so, it looks like a team that to me should be very, very good. The only concern you gotta have, I’m just being honest, it’s a very hard division; I grew up in [it]. I never got a break from Cam Newton, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan, and neither does Jason Licht or any of the coaches. So you got to play in that division. That’s part of it. And I think the Bucs play a really hard schedule this year. Flat out they do. And so it’s going to be a battle for them, but I think they are a playoff type of Wild Card-type of team.”

How bout that! Playoffs!

Dominik went on to say going 3-2 or better in their first five games would be a “huge win for the Bucs over that period of time.” Their opponents in those games are the Saints, Eagles, Steelers, Bears and Falcons.

Joe’s all for optimism. And why not? The Bucs’ last game was a win against the Saints, which entered that contest needing a victory to win the division tackle. New Orleans also has lost its last three home-openers, including one to the 2015 Bucs. The Eagles also lost a lot of players from their stout defense, as well as their leading rusher, LeGarrette Blount.

  1. Pete I Says:

Given that Dominik was part of the weak leadership at all levels of the organization, one of the Architects of failure, his optimism is as reliable as America’s Choir boy’s passes actually being accurate.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

Is this history repeating itself again???? Joe falling for talk show dominik’s bull$!&*!!!!!!!!!!!!! I guess local media cannot help it!!!!! And it seem just this time, that talk show dominik did not even have to “leak” info for those to buy it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    WUT U TALKIN BOUT WILLIS!?!?!?!?!?!?

  4. Destinjohnny Says:

Mark D was weird, he couldn’t spot a player to save his life
But, at least he did understand what a roster needed.
Again he just couldn’t pick the right player.
He could manipulate a draft board really well as well funny enough

  5. The Buc Realist Says:

Talk show dominik and incompetent lovie wrecked this franchise for years!!!! They are still repairing the roster from all those mistakes and buffoonery!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I always liked Mark Dominik who I think meant well. But I hate Lovie Smith so much, it is almost irrational.
Time has proven he was not one of the better coaches of Tony Dungy. Certainly no Mike Tomlin.
IF this new running back can actually Run, then teams need to look out for Tampa, even with Jameis gone for 3 games.
We are absolutely loaded on Offense, with receivers that are the equal of most any team. Our D Line IMHO is now a position of strength compared to what it once was.
No longer can McCoy be double and triple teamed, like he has been for most of his career here in Tampa.
I am excited for this season.

  7. JameisNOT Says:

MD is just playing nice in hopes of getting an interview when HK gets whacked. He knows that the Bucs will have yet another terrible season and wants to be part of the next regime that drafts Will Grier next year.

  8. Pickgrin Says:

One of these days – Joe needs to ask Dom why in God’s name did he not draft any OL players in FIVE years??

Has that ever even happened before in NFL history? A team goes 5 years and doesn’t draft even 1 player for a position group that constitutes almost 20% of the players on your roster???

    SMH

    Thanks Dom!

  9. The Buc Realist Says:

    @pickgrin

Do you not remember 5th round pick Xavier Fulton in 2009???? And the answer is to you question? It did not matter!!!!!! The worst GM in Buc History could have drafted all O-line and none would have worked out!!!!! talk show host dominik was garbage!!!!!! He was a walking disaster!!!!! I can’t think of one thing he was good at!!!!! Bad drafts, Bad free-agency, Changing philosophy every offseason!!!!!! He always sounds like he had the answers afterward, and that is why he is good as a radio host!!!!!!

The guy was useless as a GM!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Pete Says:

I choose to be optimistic! GO BUCS!!!

  11. Dan Says:

Bucs are wild card 0-16 team Dom. Let’s be real here.

  12. Roy T. Buford Says:

Didn’t Dom get fired from the Bucs for not producing?
I’d hope he’d say something like this…but there is also plenty of hedging. The only thing I care about regarding “playoff type” needs to come starting NOW from the players. And their (hopefully former) leader, Jameis Winston, is already late for the start.

  13. Owlykat Says:

Yes Dominick had more bad picks than rookie GM Licht did as he made his learning mistakes, but I always liked Dominick as a person and am happy he found employment on Sirius Radio and continues to be a passionate Bucs fan like we are. There is a lot to be pleased about with the personnel we have on the field now and we all are fired up to see how they do in pads and who makes the 53 man roster!

    He’s right.

  16. Pryda... sec147 Says:

I think we are a dark horse team flying under the radar I like it like that

  17. SchwiftyBuc Says:

Lol, we just received the Death kiss. 7-9 confirmed. Just kidding, I have no idea how this season will play out, but I can absolutely tell you that Dominiks talent evaluation is about as useful as a poopy flavored lollipop.

  18. stpetebucsfan Says:

    Optimism rules!

Tell me again about the book titled “The Power of Negative Thinking”

Or the little train chugging to the top of the hill chanting “I think I can’t I think I can’t.

  19. Doctor Stroud Says:

Chumbawamba-lovin’ ex-GM Mark Dominik must have been listening to his favorite song, “Tubthumping”, and started drinking Whiskey and Vodka to remember the best of times. He’s probably thinking that the Bucs will re-hire him after his “good friend” is shown the door by Team Glazer. He gets knocked down, but he gets up again, and you are never gonna keep him down!

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Mark Dominick “Rock Star” is famous for his cover of the Beatles’ “I’m A Loser”

Here are the lyrics…….dedicated to 87….(miss you)

    I’m a loser
    I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be
Of all the love I have won, and have lost
There is one love I should never have crossed
She was a girl in a million my friend
I should have known she would win in the end
    I’m a loser
And I lost someone who’s near to me
    I’m a loser
And I’m not what I appear to be

  21. stpetebucsfan Says:

    TBBF

    Beatles! Always a good choice.

And I’m with you…what happened to 87? Is he posting under a different name.
He is the one who convinced me Jameis’s misdeeds at FSU were simply the result of youthful mistakes. I agreed and so I was all fired up to draft him.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Joe’s all for optimism.” Hmmm, even about our Secondary Joe? Even about Fitz? Even about Smitty & his defensive coaching staff? Even about Dirk’s play-calling? (I’ll stop there)

  23. SB Says:

    10 and 6 BABY!

  24. JameisNOT Says:

    2&14.

  25. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

I’m calling a Bucs Superbowl run this year…

We are too stacked and too deep to not make it happen.

Whoever is at QB just needs to effectively distribute the ball to our ELITE group of playmakers and we’ll be successful.

Fitz for the 1st 4 games thru the bye, and then hopefully Jameis learns some game-management attributes from Fitz when he returns after the bye and then hopefully takes us to the promised land…

And our D will be much more stout this year as well, which = Championship (or at least a deep playoff run)

  26. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

    SB, I’m with you.

10-6. That’s what I keep feeling. 1-2 with Fitz, and 9-4 with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis

  27. BringBucsBack Says:

St Pete, I mentioned in the past, that book was written by Bob Knight, by that exact name.

True, around here positive vibes are in short supply right now, but from Dom? Seems like a likable guy personally, but the football acumen was lacking.

Back in 2011, I attended the night practice at Ray Jay with my daughter and two nephews, ages 9-15. Near the end of the practice, my younger nephew, aged 12, leaped onto the field moments before Dom walked by. Dom kindly helped hoist my nephew back up into the stands. When done, I asked him to please bring in some D-line help, at which he replied; “We’ll get it done.” Today, we are STILL trying to solidify those positions.

    Again, nice guy, not-so-nice GM.

  28. T REX Says:

Dominik was one of the worst GMs of all-time. He sucked. I wouldn’t trust a word out of his mouth.

  29. Season Is Over Says:

How about a team that can actually defeat an opponent first? Baby steps. Is this the guy that refused to draft offensive lineman and wonders why his qb failed? Dominik hasn’t been right about anything Buccaneer for a decade plus. What exactly was the intention of this article?

Alaskan, how about a different prediction, but same results … 3-1 with Fitz, then 7-5 with Jameis (unless he has a losing streak or gets injured again & they start Fitz again). I’m hoping for a 10-6 record overall, and I think Koetter will let Fitz start Game 4 IF we’re 2-1 at the time (which I think we will be). Jameis will get to start AFTER the Bye, and I’ll predict now that we’ll lose to the Falcons (in their house), but rally to beat the Browns & Bengals. We’ll lose to the Panthers (at Carolina), then beat the Redskins here (that’d make us 6-3 at that point in the season). I can see us beating the Giants AND 49ers … but then we have FIVE tough games IN DECEMBER (3 of them against our division rivals). IF we win 2 of the 5 we’ll be doing good (December’s NEVER been good to us) … that’d bring us to 10-6 and POSSIBLY a wild-card spot.

Of course, it’s just a prediction, and both of us could very well be wrong. I haven’t been doing so good forecasting the weather lately either.

  31. Capt.Tim Says:

    Hmmm
Trust the opinion of Dumbinick- the worst GM in the history of pro sports?
    Or
    Las Vegas odds makers?

    Tough choice

  32. JimmyJack Says:

So a former GM comes out and admits he was scared of the other teams in his own division. He is basically admitting he didn’t have a clue how to stop them.

Hey Glazers what the f*** kind of weak minded Nancy azz soft soft people are you hiring to run your franchise? WTF kind of BS quote is that? You hired that b**ch to be your GM?

Jeez get a clue. You franchice specializes in football not kitten toys. You need to hire people who are tough as nails……..Boy, what a bunch ch of dopes.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Season is over haha haha. Finally somebody with a nickname that’s relevant year round.

    BringBucsBack Says:
“Dom kindly helped hoist my nephew back up into the stands. When done, I asked him to please bring in some D-line help, at which he replied; “We’ll get it done.”

Baahahaha – Proceeds to flush 1st and 2nd rd picks down the toilet on Claybourne and Cheesburger Bowers ….

  35. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

His statements are 100% correct. I am amazed that all of you Buc fans who watch this team week in and week out don’t agree. That defense was horrible last year and was addressed in a very big way in the offseason. I mean the line was overhauled outside of McCoy. That will make a HUGE difference. Even with Fitz I think they will be able to compete with anyone. They have so many weapons on offense and a defense that should be massively improved. You guys seem just blinded with negativity.

  36. JameisNOT Says:

@defense rules: stay out of the brown liquor until later in the evening. They will be very lucky to win 4 games

  37. donuts Says:

Do not believe in Buc hype. 6-8 wins max. I wont change my prediction on a 5-win team. No playoffs for the den of depression.

  38. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

JameisNOT and Donuts – I truly believe that you guys aren’t fans. No way you watched all of their games last year and you don’t realize that no pass rush was their primary problem. With Vea and JPP being added to the mix all aspects of the defense should be vastly improved. Two 2nd round CBs will help as well. A RB will help finish off a loaded offense. Lucky to win four games GFOH and go cheer on the Titans.

  39. Tom S. Says:

Some people mentioned the worst GM in Bucs history, but this article isn’t about Jason Licht, it’s about the second worst in “Rockstar” Mark Dominik.

Both have been awful, but in addition to having a marginally better, but still awful record, Dominik managed to nail his top 5 pick in Gerald McCoy, while the number one overall pick Licht was gifted by building the worst roster in football is one more strike from being out of football entirely.
