Day 5 Training Camp News, Notes & Nuggets

July 31st, 2018

Plenty happening at practice today

Ahhh, clouds, lots of them. What a welcome sight through today’s training camp practice at One Buc Palace.

Joe was roaming the sidelines and taking all kinds of notes just to keep you informed.

Enjoy!

*Early power for the defense in 11-on-11, bizarre interception on dumpoff in traffic by Kwon Alexander. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw into way too much traffic. See JoeBucsFan home page story.

*Fitzpatrick flushed right on next play. Another defensive W.

*Third-and-long sets up and Fitzpatrick connects with Chris Godwin for a first down down the left seam. Rough blitz pickup by Ronald Jones but it appears to get the job done.

*Freddie Martino hauls in a 10-yarder from America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, over the middle.

*GM Jason Licht and Noah Spence seen chatting between plays.

*Near pick tossed by Jameis. Sort of a throw to nowhere without much on it.

*Brent Grimes is in shorts and can’t seem to stand still. Banged up and out today, story on the home page.

*BLITZ! M.J. Stewart gets through but backs off at the last second on Jameis.

*Group sack whistled of Fitzpatrick. Not a great series for the offensive line.

*Vernon Hargreaves flying in on a blitz. It doesn’t appear that his shin gash is bothering him one bit. Fitzpatrick complete to Godwin on the play. Hargreaves seemed to be celebrating as if he would have had a sack. Joe’s not buying it.

*Ali Marpet manhandles Jason Pierre-Paul, who was rushing inside. Dominant day for Marpet. More on that later.

*Ryan Griffin connects with undrafted rookie Ervin Phillips on a crossing route with a defender in his face. Nice throw.

*Kicking ecstasy!! Nobody missed. A perfect 4-for-4 for top-dog Chandler Catanzaro. He nailed one from 40 yards that was still rising as it went throw the uprights. Impressive. Final kick was a hurry-up, set-up-and-kick drill with offensive coordinator Todd Monken counting down from 10. Bucs were on point and Catanzaro comfortably hit a 30-yarder. And even camp meat rookie kicker Trevor Moore, who missed three consecutive field goals over the weekend, was perfect.

*7-on-7 work kicks off with Jameis hitting Mike Evans wide open over the middle, like a deer in a cornfield. However, 1-on-1 pass blocking/pass rushing drills kick off on another field, so Joe’s eyes head and video camera head there.

1-on-1 drill highlights!

*Demar Dotson stands up Will Gholston and D-line coach Brentson Buckner is after his guy. They talk and Buckner very quickly barks, “I don’t care what he does.”

*Camp meat action scores a win for tackle Brad Seaton versus DE Will Clarke.

*Jason Pierre-Paul goes to his very familiar left edge position and eats up Dotson easily, followed by driving Dotson deep into the backfield. Dotson appears to be getting his timing back after knee surgery. He also looked to be going at 85 percent speed all day.

*Vinny Curry bows away a camp meat body.

*Gholston continues to struggle. Caleb Benenoch handles him easily and Buckner is immediately in Gholston’s face and simulating a football chest punch.

*Back-to-back intense battles, Ali Marpet vs. Gerald McCoy. Joe can’t call McCoy the winner, so that’s a win for Marpet, who looks stronger this season.

*Mitch Unrein scores a win against Evan Smith.

*New center Ryan Jensen looks a step slow today through various reps. Hopefully, he’s shaking off rust from a very minor injury. Hopefully.

* Noah Spence versus rookie o-lineman Cole Boozer went about how you might expect on multiple reps.

*Tackle Cole Gardner stones Davonte Lambert.

*FLAG!!! NFL officials are doing their thing during this drill and Donovan Smith has a fist full of camp meat DE Patrick O’Connor’s jersey.

*And in an obscure camp meat battle, Buckner demands a flag on his DE that went to the ground. The official will have none of it. Joe’s never seen a coach argue with a practice official before.

*McCoy eats up Jensen. That get-off. Nasty.

*Marpet wins versus Beau Allen, and that happened multiple times, and during 11-on-11, too.

*Another win against a camp meat body for Unrein, who had a solid day.

*Pierre-Paul throws aside Ryan Jensen for a win, but Jensen holds up in Round 2.

*Man, Peyton Barber looks quick. (See home page story w/ quotes from Dirk Koetter). Shortly after, though, Barber goes wide left and is swarmed by defense. Big day for them.

* Jacquizz Rodgers runs up the gut and gets loose

* Shaun Wilson on next play does the same only through the right side.

* Adam Humphries catches a pass in traffic, falls over would-be tacklers but hangs on to the ball from Jameis.

* Chris Godwin is covered just about perfectly by Chris Conte but goes high for a Jameis pass, pulls it down along the right sideline and is gone.

* Glasses raised at the velvet-lined lounge at the Greater Vero Beach Ramada Inn. Freddie Martino catches a short pass over the middle coming in from the right from Fitz.

* Another crossing pattern with DeSean Jackson from the right side and Fitz put the ball on the money and at the last instant, Keith Tandy stretches out to tip the ball away.

* Ryan Smith whiffed on a tackle and DeSean Jackson broke free, coming back to the field from the right side on a Fitz roll out to the right. (video below)

* Jameis throws a short pass to the left and not sure who was the intended target but Jordan Whitehead dove low to try to grab the pass for a pick but came up empty.

* Fitz throws over the middle and Justin Evans is in the perfect spot for a pick.

*7-on-7 highlight from Bernard Reedy with a diving grab on a Jameis throw.

*Diving breakup by rookie Carlton Davis very late in practice. Is his mojo back?

*Jameis really throwing with great authority and touch late in practice.

Ryan Smith can’t wrap up D-Jax below as Ryan Fitzpatrick shows his mobility.

    great notes joe…..

I love that buckner is in gholston’s grill and barking at the refs…..sounds like a future HC…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  8. Destinjohnny Says:

Gholston has never been the same since he became a millionaire
    Love love love Buckner

  9. Buccernutter Says:

Joe I cannot emphasize enough how awesome these notes are. You really get me hyped for the season. I would love to take camp notes. Man.

From what I’m seeing and hearing though is gholston is terrible thus far. Also rojo has not had one highlight. Barber may hold on all year.

Also I saw Jensen beast McCoy on another site earlier today.

  10. Bucsfanman Says:

Gholston, “the best run-stuffing DE” that Tampa Bay simply couldn’t do without!!!!
Should’ve been cut. Judging by these notes, sooner as opposed to later.
I hope he can get it together….all hands on deck!

  11. Etzel Says:

“Good thang now we got da QB that aint gunna throw da balls to da other team yuck yuck yuck”

  12. Chris in WA Says:

I know it’s training camp but I am not impressed by Ryan Jensen so far considering the money he has got.

  13. Etzel Says:

Second, the Gholston comment. How/Why do we keep paying these guys???

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

William Gholston no longer carried dead cap after this season. He;ll make the team this year, but he better get it in gear if he wants to remain after the season.

  15. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Etzel what are you talking about? Interception is Fitzys middle name. He’s thrown a lot in his career. Knew a heater couldn’t help himself.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Think of it….Gholston is our weakest Dlineman….

    & Joe…good job…making us feel like we are there…..

  17. DB55 Says:

Nothing here surprises me, at all. Those who were supposed to win their match ups won. They are who I thought they were.

We’re in a world of hurt boys, licht continues to waste money and draft picks but wtfdik.

Run Jameis Run! Get the heck out of dodge before this oline ends your career. Center, RG and RT are non-existent or suspect af.

What’s the over/under on Griffin playing game 3? I’ll be shocked if Fitz makes it out of philly in one piece.

  18. DB55 Says:

    Tbbf

    Re: Gholston

    That remains to be seen.

  19. jjbucfan Says:

So, is our D-line that good or is our O-line that bad? My biggest fear going into this year based on all the BS analysis given by the Bucs about our O-line at the end of the season. At least Marpet looking strong, Jensen should be fine. D Smith isn’t very good, IMO. Hopefully Benonach steps up and hopefully Dotson isn’t washed up, was a great pro for us (average lineman, great pro).

  20. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

DB55 i agree seems OL is still garbage hope the secondary is improved or this will be 2017 part 2

  21. DB55 Says:

was a great pro for us
    —–
In 2015 he was arguably our best player. Today, if you have to ask if he’s washed up you’re clearly not paying attention but wtfdik

  22. Pryda... sec147 Says:

    Beast marpet the man

  23. Dooshlarue Says:

    Joe,

You had me at “fist full of camp meat”……..

  24. jjbucfan Says:

DB55-On this team, with these coaches, “serviceable” seems to be okay with them. Just look at their evaluation of DS76, they think he is a top LT. For me and my definition of “washed up”, Dot would have fallen into that category last year. We really didn’t address it unless Cappa can takeover. I would have moved Smith to RT and drafted a LT in the second or traded back into the first. I also would have taken Derwin James instead of Vea based on what we did in the offseason, but to borrow a line, wtfdik

  25. rrsrq Says:

Thanks Joe for solid Bucs coverage. Listening to Sirius XM NFL channel. Lance Meadow, the sub host finally talks about the Bucs, you know the team that brought in JPP, Vinny Curry, Mitch &Beau, drafted Vita Vea to compete against the NFC north QBs, Aaron Rogers, Matthew Stanford and Mitch Tribusky, WTF, Bucs haven’t been in the north for 20 years

  26. GhostofSchiano Says:

DB55 Says: What’s the over/under on Griffin playing game 3? I’ll be shocked if Fitz makes it out of philly in one piece.

Whats the over/under Fitz survives the Saints game? Or even completes it?

Saints “D” is pretty good. Ryan Griffin next man up…..if he gets hurt then what?

  27. Lord Cornelius Says:

“Today, if you have to ask if he’s washed up you’re clearly not paying attention but wtfdik”

    From PFF

“Bucs tackle Dotson, a 10-year NFL veteran and former undrafted free agent, put together a career year from a pass protection standpoint in 2017, allowing just 14 total pressures across 455 pass-blocking snaps before going down with a torn meniscus in Week 12. Dotson’s career-high 97.6 pass-blocking efficiency ranked third this past season.”

If he is washed up now coming off the injury then we’ll see; but to my eye he wasn’t a big liability last year really. The worst pressure seemed to come through the middle but our pass blocking was at least average to my eye vs how bad it has looked for some other teams in the league. The run blocking is where we were definitely below average imo

  28. GhostofSchiano Says:

    https://www.cbssports.com/fantasy/football/news/buccaneers-ryan-griffin-not-expected-to-challenge-fitzpatrick/

Koetters comments really make me question his ability to be successful as a head coach in the NFL.

    Read Dirks comments, just brilliant.

  29. DB55 Says:

    LC

Jameis’s and Griffin’s shoulders beg to differ but again ….

Honestly I don’t even remember Dotson last year I keep having reoccurring nightmares of Caleb knocking the ball out of jw hand on that fumble play.

I’ll keep Marpet and Smith, I’m meh on Jensen just don’t see a ginger standing up to this sun. Sorry don’t mean to be stereotypical. Caleb is a liability and lord only knows who’s playing RT. Hasn’t Dotson been injured these last 3 seasons?

Barber isn’t the best pass pro and I’m not sure about RoJo either. Rodgers is our best bet but based on what I’ve read he seems to be buried in the depth chart.

As of today I see the worst case scenario as Evans smith at RT with Caleb or Wester at guard or vice versa. Either way not good. You can’t draft a rolls Royce and put 87 octane in it or a Batman signal on it but wtfdik.

    Run Jameis Run!!!

Maybe the glazers plan is to get jw hurt, pay him 20mil and then draft another qb #2 overall so the real fans are happy. Looking at you TB Times.

  30. DB55 Says:

    LC

The best thing I’ve seen on that practice field is Casey Phillips, HELLO IS THIS THING ON?!?

  31. Jim Says:

Good job, Joe. Most times I’m shaking my head, but these nuggets are GOOD!

  32. SB Says:

I can’t speak for the rest of us but as a fan of 42 years I am feeling good with what we have lined up as a team right not. Certainly more than in the last decade.
It’s all about the Pass Rush to me though!. If it is what it is billed to be then we are gonna win at least 4 more games than last yr.
    GO BUCS!

  33. SB Says:

    *now*

  34. SB Says:

Also @ Joe….the closest Ramada Inn to Vero is Pompano Bch.
It is also not velvet lined. C’mon man.

  35. frank n furter Says:

You know the Family Guy episode where Peter keeps singing “Wella bird bird bird, bird is the word …. bird bird bird, bird is the word …. over and over to be annoying?

That’s just like hearing “camp meat body” and “velvet lined lounge” or “future baggage handlers” or even “America’s quarterback, pro bowler…”

It is the sign of a very dull mind that lacks creativity to be so stuck on idiotic phrases that are 100% annoying to 99% of all folks without man breasts nor their own website.

Luckily, there are actual, professional sites where the writers have some education and are focused on their fans.

  36. SB Says:

    Actually Titusville may be closer.

  37. Spruilley Says:

Who is looking better Jacquizz or Shaun Wilson

  38. Godeep66 Says:

    Great reporting Joe.

  39. DB55 Says:

    Ghost
    Good point!

    Jeff
I’ve been pining for a tackle for years. You have to must protect the franchise. Give jw 3-5 seconds to throw and he’s absolutely deadly. #Facts

  40. Lamarcus Says:

Gholston is our best run stuffing dlineman we have. Until proven otherwise.

  41. Joe Says:

It is the sign of a very dull mind that lacks creativity to be so stuck on idiotic phrases that are 100% annoying to 99% of all folks without man breasts nor their own website.

Speaking of lack of creativity, there are all kinds of places you can get Bucs information which uses plain old AP style. It’s a free country dude.

  42. Joe Says:

Luckily, there are actual, professional sites where the writers have some education and are focused on their fans.

Would one of these “professional sites” happen to be run by a guy who doesn’t have a journalism degree (which Joe does have) and likes to concoct fake news to get a rise out of a player who then calls the “professional” for a rebuttal, which the same “professional” then tags as an “exclusive story?”

Joe’s ethics professors would have a field day with labeling that “professional.”

Does one of these other “professional” places have a writer whose ego is so massive that whenever he gets beat on a story he takes to Twitter in a juvenile rage and tries to discredit the source of the breaking news?

Seems folks are awfully loose with what they deem “professional.”

How is it the Glazers won’t do a sit down with these vaunted “professional” sites but will and have with Joe?

Maybe, just maybe, Joe is more “professional” than the others in the long run?

  43. Chris Schiefen Says:

If the earth falls into the seas, and both TBO and Tampa Bay Times go under, no matter, because Joe has built his Practice Nuggets as the core of the site. Well done, sir(s).

  44. Buc1987 Says:

DB55….I don’t read the Times but I’ve caught bits and pieces of crap they’ve been saying the past couple weeks. Those folks want Jameis out of Tampa BAD!!!!

  45. Owlykat Says:

Thanks so much for the accurate practice notes, Joe. Please keep them coming!
