New Tackling/Ejection Rule Clarified

June 2nd, 2018

Fresh video breakdown

If you love the beautiful NFL game, then you’re going to want to watch this new league-issued video a couple of times.

Oddly enough, the NFL shared it on social media today, on a Saturday afternoon in June.

Regardless, it further clarifies what will be an ejection when the whistles start blowing in preseason — and in the regular season. Joe has a sour stomach from this. The shots shown in the video are hard for player to avoid, and if they do, knee surgeons across the country will be making extra money this season.

    FIRE ROGER GOODELL… hahaha

But seriously, does the rule apply to a running back lowering his helmet to plow through some tacklers?
Or is the double standard applied only to the defense to ‘enhance the game?’

  2. SOEbuc Says:

OMG. THESE ZEEBRAS ALREADY MAKE TONS OF TERRIBLE CALLS ALREADY. NOW THEY’RE GOING TO START EJECTING GUYS FOR TACKLES THAT ARE ALLOWED IN PEE-WEE FOOTBALL.

NFL COULD CARE LESS ABOUT PLAYERS HEALTH. IT’S A PUBLICITY STUNT FOR DEFENDERS NOT BEING ABLE TO TACKLE SO OFFENSES CAN MAKE MORE EXPLOSIVE PLAYS. THAT’S WHAT GETS YOUR RATINGS AND SALES UP.

  3. Bradentonbuc Says:

    Unreal.

  4. BucFanForever Says:

They are going to need to increase the roster size. That’s like 30 hits a game.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

My question is….will they use replay on this at all….or is it strictly a judgement call on the field (very difficult)?………a coach should be able to challenge this call. This will probably always come with a fine….or will it?

I hate to say this but they are ruining the game we love….I don’t like injuries but this will ultimately change the game.

  6. Sumo Says:

Those ejection hits were delivered to hurt the runner. They should be ejections. A good tackler never uses his helmet. See Mr Derrick Brooks. A perfect form tackler.

  7. YoungBucs Says:

Looks to me like every offensive player is just going to lower they’re head to try and bait the defense to react the same and get a yellow hanky thrown. Sad to say but the NFL is practically dead the pussification is hitting retarded vill. Yes, I WANT HEAD INJURIES TO GO AWAY TOO just like everyone else and so my point is …OK NFL GOOD YOUR TRYING WOO HOO now show the way to do the tackle right with good form and technique. If lead with your shoulder it can look like your leading with your head. Who can discern the difference between the two in a mill sec? THESE OLD FART ZEBRAS? Get the hell out here lol! A lot of penalties and missed tackles coming up SMH.

  8. Stanglassman Says:

Both the NFL and Koetter have said that there were only 10-12 plays last season that warranted this call. So it should make very little difference.

If they are going to start teams challenging tackles, I’m gonna be bald from pulling my hair out mid-season. And I got long hair.

  10. ImtiredAnd87isright Says:

Stanglassman while I understand what Koetter said at this point that was all hindsight. Imagine real time these refs thinking it should have the flag and ejecting players. It’s going to happen a lot more then 12 plays I can assure you that with that power they now have. Oh well the NFL will either get worse and if it does I’m done with football or this will be a non issue. Time will tell. But yes the game is not what it used to be. Wait until they start doing the same thing to hockey.

  11. AlteredEgo Says:

gee…another “rule”…hey !…legalized gambling ….used to be everyone in the stands understood the play…

  12. Buccaneer scotty Says:

NFL will be gone in 5yrs! Mark it

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    SOEbuc

Oh, no….I’m not talking about additional challenges…..I’m suggesting they permit a challenge on these plays…..as a matter of fact…..I think they should be able to challenge pass interference calls…etc….as long as they keep the challenge limit per team…..
There are some really bad calls that should be challenge-able.

  14. Adambomb418 Says:

Great way to let referees influence the game. Oh wait, wasn’t the Federal ban on gambling lifted recently? Very interesting…

  15. SOEbuc Says:

    TBBF

But with these kind of plays, the a-hole refs are just gonna be under the sheet for five minutes just to come out every time and not overturn the call on a physical play. Guarantee if you could challenge PI and there was the tiniest of the tiny contact between players (or not) that it would not be overturned cus the refs certainly don’t want to look bad at their job.

Great way to let referees influence the game. Oh wait, wasn’t the Federal ban on gambling lifted recently? Very interesting… RODGER GOODELL: says Ahh we have one that can see! Probably knows that the fine print on the back of our overpriced tickets says “FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY!” Quick’ get ahold of our social media platforms to SHADOW BAN that guy!!! lol

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

    Hagler vs Leonard….symbolic

  18. Trench War Says:

All these penalties and replays are gonna slow the game down to a crawl. There won’t be anymore teams getting hot, or catching their second wind when there will so many pauses like when LEE pauses every time a pretty girl comes into focus. 🙂

..and I’m sure that’s often lol

  19. gracelivin Says:

All but one of the tackles in the film were clearly leading with the helmet, eyes down and not on the target, is and for many years has been illegal. If you read the conditions I believe this will not be a huge issue. I’m sure the flag will come and then a discussion will have to take place before an ejection will happen. But I do agree will this same thing apply to the offensive player who lowers his head trying to break a tackle, if not it should. As a High School Official it is fairly easy to see the difference between when a player intentionally lowers his head and when it is a spontaneous/bang-bang situation where the head just drops with no intent to use the helmet. Let’s trust that the official do not go out on a man hunt to eject people.

  20. Dougy balls Says:

I don’t see the problem. All those hits were intent to cause pain. The hit on the Eagles WR was the worst. This is not the NFL you grew up with. You have 240 lbs men running 4.4 heading full steam at you and then you give them a weapon. There just taking the weapon away. Already doing it in college and it’s not effecting there game

  21. Anonymous Says:

Scoring is going to go through the roof. Welcome to football played like basketball. Annoying nancys running up and down the field crying for fouls, zebras obliging the stars, and scores necessarily skyrocketing.

    Yay.

I’m with the first guy. Can we pleaseeeeeeee get rid of Goodell? The guy is killing the game

  22. Geno Says:

Love the rule change. about time

  23. SB Says:

Last time I checked the head was on top of my shoulders. That makes it pretty impossible to lower my shoulder without lowering my head. Silly sh!t here.

It’s not silly. It’s simple. All examples shown in the video were targeting to the point that they were spearing with the crown of there helmet. It’s obvious when a player is trying to inflict bodily harm

  25. BigMacAttack Says:

I think Roger the Dodger has taken one to many blows to the head….
But not on the field. Couldn’t they find a commissioner who has actually played in the NFL and really understands the game. Terrible rule. Penalty yes maybe, but ejection is too extreme. Idiots who have already run off much of their fan base with antics just keep turning the screws. They’ve lost their collective minds. This won’t end well.

  26. unbelievable Says:

The only one of those plays that should be a foul was the 1st.

The next 2 plays are just football moves. You cant lower your shoulder without your head moving down, nor can move your head in a split second if an offensive guy lowers his head.

This is gonna be terrible if it’s enforced like that. Will they use replay? cuz there’s no way they could always tell at live speed.

Or is this how they’re gonna fix games since gambling will be legal? Hmmmm good questions fellas.

  27. Anonymous Says:

Leading with the crown of the helmet has been illegal for yrs. Go back and watch the video again and see the rules breakdown. It has even been said that Lineman can not lead with their helmet. Have you ever tried to be in a 3 or 4 pt. stance and NOT lead with your helmet? They are Fing this game up with these sissy rules. These athletes make Millions and Millions of dollars and they know the dangers when they sign up. Pussywillow sh!t Imo. Just watch how this is going to affect the game this yr.

  28. SB Says:

What UB just said. ESPECIALLY the last sentence.

  29. Anonymous Says:

Actually UB there were a couple of hits there that were heinous but these changes are going to allow Refs to shape the game as they want to. And I put a comment up that got erased about Lineman not even being able to make helmet contact first. If you have ever played in a 3 or 4 point stance you would know how impossible it is to not lower your head.

  30. SB Says:

Actually UB there were a few hits in that clip that were Heinous but this new rule will allow Refs to shape the game more than ever. Also in a post that was erased earlier it has been said that even Lineman will not be allowed to make helmet contact first. If you have ever played in a 3 or 4 point stance you would know how impossible it is to do that.

  31. Pete Says:

The NFL has been committing business suicide for years now. It’s like taking uppercuts out of boxing. Just close down the league or start wearing flags on their belts, but stop calling it the NFL.

When all of this started the NFL should have changed their contracts to state all of the long term effects playing may have on the players. No one makes them sign the contract, but, if they do, they should recognize it’s a violent sport.

But, they didn’t. They trying to make a contact sport not violent, which is impossible. It’s sad to see such a great game implode like this.

Like the refs don’t have enough “judgement” call problems as it is already…

Now they can eject a player on a single, seemingly normal football play??

What about RBs and TEs and WRs lowering their head into contact? Or is this new rule just for messing with defenders – a thinly veiled means of boosting fantasy interest and promoting high scoring NFL football games?

What about on an inches to go for the TD goal line play? Every single OL and DL player is slamming helmets at the snap – trying to get as low as possible for leverage.

Will Tom Brady be ejected for lowering his head into contact on the QB sneak with 4th and a foot to go??? LOL

  35. Blackmagic00 Says:

If only this rule was put in last season? We’d be champs. The other teams defense would’ve been ejected by halftime every game while our d pranced around the field and made a couple stops. Just sayin.
