Would Jason Licht Listen?

June 7th, 2018

Seattle still shopping?

This is for the folks who are afflicted with ConteHate.

For some reason unclear to Joe, Bucs fans do not like safety Chris Conte. Joe isn’t sure if it is some form of jealousy or personal insecurity because Conte has a relationship with a former Bucs cheerleader or what. But Conte sure rubs quite a few fans the wrong way.

It’s a condition Joe has deemed “ConteHate.”

Even Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has mentioned the way fans react to Conte and how he thought that was unfair to Conte.

Just about from the first day Conte signed with the Bucs, many fans have been pining for the day he is run out of town.

Now it seems the Seahawks have been teasing NFL teams by dangling Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas out on a line like a lure trying to land a snook. Thus far, the Seahawks have gotten nibbles but no one has landed Thomas, who sat out OTAs in Seattle because he is miffed at his contract.

The Seahawks this offseason have been shedding contracts like a Cocker Spaniel does hair in a Florida summer. It seems one reason why Thomas has yet to be traded is the Seahawks’ asking price has been too steep. If no one is biting, that means Seattle just may come down.

Now the crowd over at WalterFootball.com believes the Bucs might be interested in Thomas as a lot of folks have their backs against the walls at One Buc Palace, meaning if the Bucs don’t win some damned games they may be unemployed come January.

The Buccaneers’ current regime needs to make the playoffs this year to ensure that they’ll keep their jobs. Part of that would be upgrading the offensive line and running game, but a stud in the secondary would also be a huge boon. The Buccaneers have the seventh-most cap space in the NFL.

The Bucs are surely not going to replace Justin Evans. So that means if the Bucs do go after Thomas, it is likely at the expense of Conte.

Of course, those stricken with ConteHate are probably jumping up and down reading this.

I never had it out for conte….he’s great depth but a player you probably don’t want starting too many games…..

I would pass on earl…..great player but injury pron and will demand huge bucks….always has…always will….and he deserves the big bucks….just not here…..

plus I don’t think smitty will use him properly…..evans, tandy, conte, whitehead and maybe a little bit of MJ should be able to get the job done with the improved dline…..

    we need a G…….not sold on benencoch……

  3. Kobe Faker Says:

The reason Conte is starting and on the field is because he is the last sure line of defense from opponents scoring

Both Koetter and Smitty have only confidence that could happen with Conte back there

with the red headed Matadour Kwonie whiffing constantly and Justin Evans being a bust….It suks because

we could have had the future HOF player Derwin James back there for the next 14 years

Conte is fine. I never understood the hate. He plays hard. Often safeties look bad because somebody else busted coverage.

    Evans a bust? Laughable…

  6. Buc50 Says:

With the new rule changes, I’m not sure safeties are even needed anymore. Can’t bring the hammer anymore since they now carry pillows in the secondary.

  7. Buccernutter Says:

Joe, it’s the ignorant fans that hate Conte.

You can’t pigeonhole us all lol.

  8. Buccernutter Says:

It’s the slow fans that hate Conte. You can’t pigeonhole us all.

  9. Buccernutter Says:

    Oops posted twice.

    Now 3x.

  10. Buccernutter Says:

Vea will effect nearly every play. James will be lucky to effect 1/4.

    Vea>James

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    No thanks….but need a RG

  12. Lamarcus Says:

Conte is Garbage player and if you want to get 5-11 then Conte is your starter. Conte is medicore.

Stop getting the truck stick conte!!!!

  13. LouisFriend Says:

That looks like a VERY old rumor. It’s posted after a Dez Bryant to be released post. So if it were going to happen, it likely would’ve already. The Bucs seem to feel happy with what they’ve got on board.

Conte isn’t hated by that many, I think this site mentions it more than any other outlet just to heat the flames up. He’s just terrible in coverage when he has no upfront help. Oh wait, the same could be said for every Bucs DB left stranded on an island.

  14. Casey Morgan Says:

I think Conte is OK. It’s funny fans don’t like him. The players have said that he is the best all around athlete on the team…

  15. Buchead5588 Says:

I think our DBs will be just fine with our new DLine we have an if anything I say bring in more DEs the more the better

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Conte is not great, but he is good enough to get the job done while the team develops younger talent.

Earl Thomas would be a bad move. Since our GM is better at the draft than free agency, the Bucs should make having as many good picks as possible a primary concern. Thomas is injury prone these days. He’s shown that he is willing to hold out for money.

Trading for him would cost too much. Not just a draft pick, but also a new contract and he wants big money. We’ve too many big contracts coming next year.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

And the improved defensive line will improve the entire secondary.

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

Conte is a very good safety.
Ignorant fans hate Conte, because he is sometimes seen trailing WRs in to the endzone. Dumb fans dont realize its not Conte’s man that hes chasing
    Its usually VH3’s guy

The knock on Conte in Chicago was that he was talented, but injury prone.
    Hes been healthy here

Conte is a wrap up tackler- more than a hard hitter.
With the new rules- Conte may be an even better option than Earl Thomas, who will probably head hunt himself out of a lot of games- with the new pansy impact rules

  19. Dean Says:

First of all, thank you so much for all the coverage you give us. It is amazing that even during dead times, you manage to provide nuggets of info to keep us going.
Now, don’t get your supersized panties in a wad, but here is something that needs to be addressed.
Please take a minute once a week to check Overthecap.com. They give rather up to date standing for every teams cap room and expenditures.
This story says….”The Buccaneers have the seventh-most cap space in the NFL”

I don’t care if that is your writing or Walter’s. It’s WRONG!

The Bucs are 22nd in remaining cap room with just over 9 million.
The only way they can afford to add substantially is to cut Sweezy-Sleezy and have about 6-1/2 mill extra to spend.

    Thanks for addressing this.

  20. William Walls Says:

    Capt. Tim, you nailed it.

I posted ^^^that^^^. Not sure why it shows “Anonymous”…

  22. Nick2 Says:

Isnt Earl Thomas a get down on one knee guy for the National Anthem? If so no thanks we need less controversy not more.

  23. Bucsfan951 Says:

Kobe with another off the wall assessment. Faker is king of throwing ish against the wall and sees what sticks (nothing ever does)

  24. SOEbuc Says:

CONTE IS CONSTANTLY 20 YARDS AWAY FROM THE TACKLE!!! Might be the scheme but if it is he ain’t workin in it. That’s why I’m a Conte Hater.

  25. Bobby M. Says:

The idea we need all these players is misguided…..If Evans turns out to be great, that works but to trade for a safety on the back side of his contract who’s coming off serious injury all while wanting a pay day……Thats got disaster written all over it. If you’re right there at the conference championship, then sure…roll the dice with another player to take you over the edge. However we were 5-11, we’re not even knocking on the door of the playoffs from a wild card perspective.

Sometimes the best deal is the one you avoid.

  26. Trench War Says:

Here we go, Gruden at it again, oops, I mean Joe is at it again. Let’s give up the goose for another $1,000,000 a game Revis. A player who would probably upchuck last nights dinner when told he’s been traded to Tampa. Plus, the fact is, we would probably be fleeced by Seattle only to bring him here so he can collect a paycheck for a season, suck, and then move on next year. Pass

Unless Thomas was excited to be in Tampa ..forget it.

  27. LVBUC Says:

Why give a draft choice when there are still good safeties on the free agent market that could be had on the cheap

  28. Pickgrin Says:

Earl Thomas is in the final year of his contract – is due $8.5M in 2018 with a cap hit of $10.4M.

Seahawks can take a $1.9M dead cap hit and save $8.5M if they cut Thomas.

Why would any team trade anything of value for that scenario?

    Answer is they wouldn’t.

Bucs couldn’t afford to trade for and take on Thomas’ salary even if they were dying to bring him to Tampa…

Hell – even if he gets cut and would agree to come sign with the Bucs for half his current contract we couldn’t afford that either…

Why deal in reality though when there’s a shiny object flashing in the creek…

  29. nate123456 Says:

This might be worth trading a 3rd for imo…

  30. Wesley Says:

    Yeah Conte sucks, bad.

  31. Darin Says:

    Kobe
Hof’er? I doubt james ever makes a pro bowl. Just my opinion. I dont get the hype on derwin. Conte is hated because people dont know football too well. Whichever way Conte faded the qb went the other way. Not that hard to do when everyones open. Hate mike smith before any of the players.

  32. Kobe Faker Says:

    @Darin

“Thank your parents everynight when they tuck you in bed for naming you Darin which sounds similar to Derwin”

    Kobe Faker

  33. Not there yet Says:

Honestly think we got younger at that position to go out and pay that kind of money for this guy? This post is for those who think you need pro bowl players at every position to win. Nope no thanks because if you think you are one player away then your not as close as you think

  34. stvcl Says:

Don’t want him or his contract here. We’ve sucked recently in bringing in free agents that made a difference. (Grimes being the exception)

  35. RustyRhinos Says:

Right on Bobby M. ”Sometimes the best deal is the one you avoid.” Like the Johnny Manziel no draft deal. Right Joe’s? How was his first game in the CFL?

    No thanks on this player.

  36. WINTER NG Says:

Trade Desean Jackson for E. Thomas

  37. BROCKTACULAR Says:

    Jackson for Thomas…..Sweet…
