“I Do Feel His Presence”

June 19th, 2018

Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner

You don’t have to play defensive line to be affected and influenced by fiery new Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner.

That was the word from Lavonte David during a recent private chat with Joe.

Buckner has breathed new life into the unit former d-line coach Jay Hayes helped drag into the toilet last season. And Buckner’s intensity has no boundaries, per David.

“I do feel his presence,” David said. “By the way he coaches, the way he teaches, the way his mentality is, you can see it in the d-line already. You know, those guys are out here working trying to be the best they can from Day 1. Everybody’s competing. Coach Buckner’s influence is all over his guys, and the rest of the defense is feeding off that a little bit. And that could get stronger when camp gets physical. It’s a good thing.”

Joe does’t believe this is a bunch of jolly rah-rah stuff from David.

When Buckner was released by the Cardinals after last season, numerous Arizona defensive players who didn’t play defensive line took to social media to sing his praises. Some even said he was defensive-coordinator material.

When the Bucs fired Hayes, it was all crickets from his Bucs defensive linemen on Twitter. Even super-classy Clinton McDonald was quiet, not even a “good luck” or “thank you” to Hayes from him.

@Lavonte … “Everybody’s competing. Coach Buckner’s influence is all over his guys, and the rest of the defense is feeding off that a little bit.” Been waiting to read something like that for a long time. Bucs for years haven’t had sufficient depth on defense to spark any real competition. Now, every defensive position group has lots of real competition going on, and that’s bound to show on the field on game days. Produce or it’s ‘next man up’.

One of those late season games Will gholston blocks a fg attempt and Jay Hayes goes to say something to him when they were celebrating. Looks like will gholston says to Jay Hayes ” Do go there, not now, get out of my face”….. It’s all needed to know about Hayes

When this defense ignites fire to the NFL this fall, Smitty will get HC offers and will want to leave. This time, we’ll let him go.
