Don’t Cut Jameis; Bench Him

June 29th, 2018

General manager Jason Licht

Some suggest America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler James Winston should be cut.

Joe isn’t one of those people. And neither is Eric Adelson of Yahoo! Sports. The dude who is single-handedly trying to bring Fedoras back in style for sportswriters, typed a piece where he is angry at Jameis. Understandable.

Adelson has had it with the acts both innocent (Jameis propping himself up as a leader) and heinous (his hassle with an Uber driver). But rather than release Jameis, which Adelson believes is rash, Adelson thinks Jameis should be benched for the season.

It is too soon to cut ties with Winston. The Bucs are not going to bail on all that potential (and money). This is still a business, and Winston still has that all-too-redeeming quality, his arm. Other athletes have grown up when they see the writing on the wall. It’s up to the Bucs to start scrawling furiously. If that means trading for another quarterback to add to the mix, so be it.

There is a chance Winston will finally mature and stand aside the titans of the franchise he plays for: names like Ronde Barber, John Lynch, Warrick Dunn and Gerald McCoy. But when the Bucs have been good in the past, they haven’t needed a superstar passer. Their stars have been spread throughout the roster – veterans who have been reliable during their careers, both on and off the field. That should serve as a reassurance to the men in the locker room, and a final warning to Winston.

Adelson points out that the NFL is a business, and that is exactly why Jameis shouldn’t (won’t?) be benched. Starting Ryan Fitzpatrick is essentially p!ssing away a season.

Of course, if the Bucs start the season 0-3, which means there is a 97 percent chance a playoff berth is toast, then no has to blame anyone but Jameis for Pearl Harboring his own team.

Plus, as many have pointed out, the Bucs have a decision to make on Jameis for the 2019 season and beyond. It’s extremely hard to make that decision if Jameis is sitting for the season.

And MANY suggest you no longer refer to the a-hole as ‘America’s QB”

  2. Pete I Says:

So not only will the Glaziers have as the face of their franchise a disturbed man, who touches women inappropriately, drinks to much and lies about it, but then have him sit on the bench and be a constant issue for every game? Wonderful! Well at least he won’t be fumbling away games that way.

  3. Pete I Says:

So EVERY game the announcers and producers will give us the obligatory JW shot and the ” there’s Winston sitting on the bench, we all know about the hassle with the Uber driver and…………. Oh that is correct only Joe calls it a hassle. Yeah that’s a good business model.

  4. AlteredEgo Says:

I emailed OBP Human Resources and asked after learning that the NFL gave Jameis Winston a 3 game suspension…..”how many games with the Glazers give him “…..personally I think he needs a whole year away from the team….not so much as punishment, but for the focus of the team this season….and YES we need to bring in upgrade over Fitz at QB position ASAP !

  5. Jim Says:

The Glazers could show some class and just give the lying sex offender his walking papers. Winning? Jameis went 3-10 last season…

  6. Memberberries Says:

Boy did you guys pick the wrong horse.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Bench him the one game in Chicago before the bye.

If we are 0-3 then it would be a punitive benching.
If we are 1-2 or better, it would mean Fitz is doing OK and Jameis needs the prep time before starting.

As far as future contracts…….I would roll his 5th year into a 5 year $15 mil per year ($30 mil) Guaranteed deal…..this would save the team $5 mil in 2019 and give Jameis a chance…..if he does well his next contract would be the big one for him.

  8. gbobucsfan Says:

I wonder, of all those teams that started 0-3, how many had their starter injured/suspended for those games? I’m a numbers guy but I think our situation may be a little different than most teams that start 0-3. At least, I hope it is! Go Bucs!

  11. Pete I Says:

And when the Buc’s are losing a game will “Non Winning” Coach Koetter have to call in ” America’s QB who touches women inappropriately, drinks to much and lies about it” Winston? Well, Koetter might at that point just start earning his head coaching salary. It would be a first!

  12. Q Says:

Joe why do you still refer to this dude as America’s QB? Sounds stupid and it does not fit his person whatsoever

[Actually it does. No other quarterback in the NFL moves the needle like Jameis outside of Tom Brady and whenever Aaron Rodgers is caught by paparazzi with a celebrity girlfriend.]

  13. Pete I Says:

Big Ben is Pittsburgh’s problem. And irrelevant in Tampa Bay in 2018.

Senator Al Franken was forced to resign

    America’s Sex Offender*

Let’s have another poll Joe! Gauge the temperature of the fan base, should we cut him, add more games to the suspension, or let him come back after 3 games? My vote is to let him serve his suspension and come back, but I don’t expect a good year for Jameis or the Bucs, so we’ll start over from scratch next year with a new HC and front office, which most likely means a fresh prospect at QB. I’m down for that! Maybe the new guy won’t turn the ball over 20 times every year.

  28. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

The nfl should just contract this mickey mouse franchise and save the sports world embarrassment every single year. Tampa bay Buccaneers were complete and total jokes long before winston and will be long after. If the NFL truly cares about fans and the sport of football the only right thing to do is eliminate this small town joke franchise. If any town or owners have proved unworthy its tampa and glazers.

  29. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Joe – I have a question – if it was your daughter or wife driving that uber would you still be calling him America’s QB?

  30. Syl Says:

I’m not an apologist. I am cool with him being suspended, and wouldn’t lose an ounce of sleep if he was suspended for the season. I just see a lot of hypocrisy, and I think the Big Ben story shows this story will not survive. It does seem alcohol is the big issue with him, and hopefully he can eliminate it, and get beyond it.

  31. martinii Says:

    TBBF
Had a brain fart but I see what you are saying. If 0-3 it’s JW fault so penalize him for that by benching him another week. If Fitz has some wins in first three games bench JW before the bye for better preparation to return after the bye. Makes sense. I for one may be an optimist but I feel like Fitz (with improvements in other position groups) my hold his own.

  33. Crazy Joe Says:

Joe, where can I go to get the details of this Uber incident. I’ve read everything from a “drunken pass grabbing” to “physical sexual assault”. Yes, I know both are unacceptable, but the intent is clearly different. One is in very poor taste and very bad behavior; the other is deviant predator behavior. Both very different. The click media does not care about the difference and the NFL does not care about the difference; but a realist cares as any man or women in college has grabbed the ass of your dance partner in a bar – yes rude and inappropriate worthy of a slap on the face, but still not deviant predator behavior.

  34. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Our qb plays with uber drivers and our team captain plays with dolls while wesring Michael Jackson paraphernalia. Once again glazer ran organization is the biggest embarrassment in all of sports.

  36. lightningbuc Says:

People – JOE IS NOT GOING TO QUIT USING THE NONSENSICAL MONIKER OF AMERICA’S QB! Get over it. He likes you all arguing about it. Just stop. Instead – have fun with it. Refer to Winston as Lacoochee’s Groper, Kazakhstan’s Finger Licker, etc. Get creative – throw it back at Joe.

The Joes have shown that Buc football is much, much more important to them than a sexual deviant running amok in our community. $$$ > morals … Really, Lightning Buc, you’re going to blame Jameis on Joe? Should Joe pretend Jameis is not the Buccaneers’ QB, the team’s handpicked face of the franchise? In case you’re unaware, Joe has no control of the roster. In addition, Joe was all over Team Glazer for the Jerramy Stevens signing and re-signing and Joe has spent countless hours studying all aspects of Jameis Winston’s legal issues.–Joe

Don’t worry guys, after this season is over, and Jameis turns the ball over 20 times and leads the Bucs to yet another mediocre win total, we’ll get to start over from scratch. Hopefully the next regime has the sense to not draft a quarterback with as many red flags as America’s Sex Offender.

  49. T in Orlando Says:

Benching him for more than 1 additional game beyond the suspension doesn’t make sense. If the plan is to bench him this year, then just go ahead and cut him, because to pay $21 million next year to find out where his game is at is crazy.

Personally, I think the team will and should have Winston play every game he’s available, then at the end of the year if they don’t like what they see (or he does something extremely stupid again) cut him. If he’s not injured, then they don’t owe him anything.

I do find it hilarious the number of commenters bashing Joe for still using the moniker “America’s QB” or for the number of posts about Jameis. Joe is trying to make a buck too, and clearly has found somethings that drive eyeballs to his site. So ridiculous to think that the use of a nickname would drive anyone to a website. –Joe. I think Joe is becoming the Howard Stern of Bucs websites; several people don’t like, but read anyway just to see what Joe will say next to piss them off.

  68. Pickgrin Says:

    Maybe Tbbf.

You yourself seemed to go a bit cra cra over this Winston suspension business as well I noticed. Last week especially – although I have seen your stance “mellow” a bit the last few days.

What’s funny is that 4 or 5 months from now when Winston is playing great ball and the Bucs are winning games – the vast majority of hypocrites who are now screaming “Bench him – Cut Him – OFF WITH HIS HEAD” will be cheering for #3 after every “wow” play and inwardly glad that the Glazer’s weren’t stupid enough to actually listen to their shortsighted, over-reacting, cloaked in fake moral outrage judgments of JW that seem so prevalent right now while the haters are having their moment…

  69. Ghastly Bucs Says:

    @Pickgrin,

I doubt that. I haven’t seen him play great ball yet. Sure a play here or a play there, but he hasn’t strung together a good 4 qtrs since being here. I won’t hold my breath. He is an average QB and a dime a dozen.

  73. Cobraboy Says:

I don’t care what happens to Winston. He’s shown flashes, but he’s also shown some really dumb-a$$ mistakes that a 3rd year QB should not make.

He’s no Brett Farve, that’s for sure. Unless JW starts texting dicpics.

I’d be happy to hear the Bucs did a deal for Nick Foles. I doubt he’d embarrass the franchise and would win as many games as JW.

I’m just sick about hearing about this Uber thing.

But to me, the big dealio is his deception. I could cut the guy some slack if he had said, “Yeah, I was really drunk that night and honestly don’t know what I did. Could I have grabbed an Uber driver in the crotch? Maybe. I just hope the driver was a girl.”

But to string this along when he galldang KNEW what happened is pure, immature, not-manning-up crap.

  74. America's Commenter Says:

Similar accusations have derailed the careers of many celebrities, with their employers eating contracts and absorbing huge financial losses in order to do the right thing.

    – FoxNews clipped Bill O’Reilly.
    – NBC fired Matt Lauer and Mark Halperin.
    – Louis C.K. had a movie and a Netflix comedy special canceled.
    – Kevin Spacey was removed from 2 movies and Netflix canceled his “House of Cards” series.
    – Harvey Weinstein was fired and expelled from every professional guild in Hollywood.

There are many, many more examples here:

    http://www.mcall.com/entertainment/mc-harvey-weinstein-impact-list-of-men-accused-of-sexual-misconduct-20171129-story.html

The world has changed with the #metoo movement. Ben Rothleisberger would be crucified if his incident happened in this climate, so that comparison is largely irrelevant.

The Bucs need to do the right thing and cut Winston, regardless of the impact on the 2018 season and beyond. Maybe there is a path to redemption for him, but it starts AFTER he takes some time out, lives a clean life, and proves himself as a backup somewhere else.

As for this season, why is nobody talking about making a move for Teddy Bridgewater? He was poised to have a terrific season and lead the Vikings deep into the playoffs before his unfortunate knee injury nearly 2 full years ago. He’s caught up in a logjam at QB with the Jets and may be the best option to backup or compete with Fitzpatrick right now.

I know race plays a small part of the hate for Winston and that ain’t race card that’s just facts.

listen the man has been humiliated, he is being punished, he has lost millions in endorsements, what he did was inexcusable and wrong, but the piling on and kicking a man when he’s down, i mean come on, it is going to be quite a challenge coming back from this, if he does, some might think after three games he’s just going to waltz in and everything will be the same, but it’s not true, how many women do you think the buccaneers employ at OBP jameis has to look all of them in the eye, trying to keep his head up, do you not think he is going to feel ashamed or sense that he has let alot of people who trusted him down. tiger woods never quite was the same after the fiasco with his wife, and the women, and all that, he is going to have to face the media on and off the field, his teammates say they have his back but what about their wives, are they going to be comfortable in social settings with jameis? let’s see where this goes, let the man lay in the bed of his own creation, and quit beating him down, he’s being punished accordingly and most of it you wont see, only jameis will.

  81. buccan8 Says:

It’s interesting that people who make such a huge case for the Moral Response (cutting Winston because what he did was *wrong*) eschew the same standard for someone like Ben Roethlisberger, citing a changed climate.

Sorry folks–you either take the moral stance based on truth or you don’t. If Jameis deserves to be excoriated and run out of town, so did Big Ben, Favre, and Mixon. Truth is truth, no matter the social climate. #MeToo may be a thing, but it doesn’t make what these men did any more (or less) heinous.

Racism in our nation’s history is a sad and evil tale; just because people weren’t taught to treat one another fairly fifty years ago doesn’t mean we should view racism back then in a different light–because the TRUTH is that it’s wrong, and social climates don’t change that.

So I’m looking forward to seeing how Pittsburgh fans behave that Monday night. It will be very telling to see just how important women’s rights and protections are to that city, or whether it’s just another laughable political game to everyone.

You fools who cry about the groping of that woman as if it was such a horrendous act better not have voted in the president of the United States because that man openly admitted he groped women and he doesn’t care about it! You classless people who will voted him in showed your true colors with that one, but yet you’re up here whining about Jameis who atleast shows he’s remorseful about it. He lied about it so what! All humans lie because it’s in our nature so get off your high horse! If you’re church goers doesn’t your Bible say not to judge or you’ll be judged? People don’t crucify priests the way you do Jameis and they did WWAAYY worse than him!

For all you Buc fans who say they’ll leave if he’s not cut, please leave now! There are 31 other teams to root for, or just become Patriot bandwagoneers since they never do anything wrong or lie about the things they didn’t do wrong. Leave and don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you!
