Defining Jameis Winstons’ 5th-Year (2019) Option

June 25th, 2018

Talks Jameis contract

When there’s a contract/legal issue on the table in the NFL, there’s no one better to explain than former practicing attorney and current ultimate NFL insider Mike Florio, of NBC Sports and ProFootballTalk.com.

A lot of fans are confused by what the fifth-year option for first-round draft picks means — and doesn’t mean — and what if any guarantees are really there. Florio lays it out in this new video.

Based on the fact we have no RT side of an online, I think Jameis gonna get PAID!!!! Thank you Jason Licht!

  2. DB55 Says:

As a matter of fact that shoulder is already feeling kinda funny, you know?!

  3. Lamarcus Says:

    Pay the man!!

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

“Pay the man!!”- Why? The Bucs have the leverage, unless he’s injured. He’s playing for his job too, don’t forget. If this team falls on its face, there will be a house-cleaning. An incoming coach won’t feel tethered to a guy they didn’t pick unless he’s lights-out. If he’s lights-out, Koetter and Co. are still at the helm and he gets his $$$.

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, the only way to assure not paying him is not playing him….

Don’t think that will happen…..I guess it would count against the cap also.

Perhaps, if they plan to keep Winston, they will renegotiate and extend beyond 2019…..

Now, for all of those not familiar with the 3rd passenger….pay close attention to the opening of this video.

I haven’t deemed Winston guilty of anything but a poor choice of friends….

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

Bucsfan…. I don’t think the Glazers will hold Lichtenstein and Kostyra responsible for Jameis off field blunders, they have put a good roster together for 2018 and it will be even better in 2019… the possibilities of drafting a QB with next years 1st round pick is very real….Drew Lock in 2019

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Can we see some GMC trash posts please….getting bored with this.

And Al Capone did not use H&R Block too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Realist

Don’t speak badly of my Uncle Al…….he and I were close.

  11. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

If all goes well, bucs Lock up a franchise QB at a bargain deal, allowing us to continue paying/resigning our best players for years to come

  12. AlteredEgo Says:

I was groped by a Buc’s Swashbuckler in my Urber….we went to her place and had a wonderful time…just saying…

  13. Bucsfan951 Says:

    @bucfan NO KIDDING!!!

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Look for action on trying to include conduct clauses on the 5th year option in the Collective Bargaining Agreement….makes some sense to have it there going forward.

  15. jim Says:

    Joe,
In two of your articles, you describe the Jameis situation as a “hassle” with an uber driver. Instead of you trying to gloss it over for Winston, try using the proper term, alleged sexual assault or alleged sexual misconduct. To have you repeatedly call it an “irritating inconvenience” is a complete farce and shows your true colors, while minimizing the fact that a crime was committed. A “hassle” is getting kicked out of the Uber for being an ass, Hell by applying your standards to the past, Aqib and the Taxi driver were “bickering”.
Joe gets this a lot. It is a hassle among other nouns) until we really know what happened. With the case of Talib, he settled with the named cab driver, there was a police report, Talib was arrested and entered into a diversion program with the State. –Joe

  16. LJS4th Says:

    Should have drafted Mariota!!!!

  17. DB55 Says:

You just getting annoying now. Sorry jaboo crushed you faith in humanity, but your moral high ground is risible

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hey DB…..I’m the one calling for the return to trashing GMC…..

You can’t find one single post where I condemn Jameis….to the contrary…I have been stating if he is honest he can survive this….and I hope he does…..there are multitudes calling for his head….I challenge you to find one post.
As a matter of fact, I challenge anyone to find a post where I have deemed Jameis guilty. All of my posts are qualified with ifs etc….
The facts are not out but what is out is certainly not pleasant.

  19. BrianBucs Says:

The only thing the Bucs should pay for is Winston’s ticket out of town

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

agreed!!!!! But shouldit be called the winston clause, or the sexual assault rule??????????

  21. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    DB

Furthermore…I was a huge Mariota supporter during the draft because of this potential issue….but you haven’t seen one post from me saying we should have done differently……as a matter of fact, I became happy with the selection of Jameis and if this turns south…will be very disappointed with it.

Now, “America’s QB” is a different matter…..my feeling is that Joe is taunting readers with this and it makes things worse for Jameis….putting him on a pedestal……not a good thing.

    @Tampabaybucfan

No…I wasn’t being facetious. I simply think there should be that protection for the owners going forward….and I’m sure they agree…..now, a player that behaves badly would certainly be against this….they want their money.

  23. DB55 Says:

    Realist

There’s an app for that it called WE-Consent

  24. Bucsmarley Says:

Cut him now. Why gamble on him. Sure he’s put up some decent numbers but so have many other available qbs. Seriously at this point I would trust Johnny Manziel or Tim Tebow more. Maybe make a play for Bridgewater. It’s a moot point because we will be looking for a new HC, Dc and GM and qb next year
Please don’t waste your money or the loyalty of your fan base on a kid with potential but has zero common sense

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I will also say this…

What is taking the NFL so long to come public…..the leaks about this have been out for days….they are permitting this to simmer in the public too long…..time to act. Typical NFL….

  26. Steven007 Says:

    Tampabaybuc –

    “Joe is taunting readers…”

Not only taunting, stubbornly taunting. Could you imagine JoeRamsFan calling Jared Goff America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jared Goff. Even JoeCowgirlsFan, covering so called America’s Team isn’t insolent enough to call Dak Prescott America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Dak Prescott. But for one of the Joe’s at least this ridiculous moniker thing is clearly his thing. Why must it always be AC/DC loving GM Jason Licht? But at least that’s innocuous. The JW thing with America’s QB is an insult. It’s as if it’s geared towards middle schoolers.

  27. tnew Says:

I guess this is what makes me off, but as I see it, this is the time I try to negotiate Winston’s next contract. Set the base at 8 mil a year. Sure, he can earn the $20mil a year that he had coming his way, if he stays out of trouble, throws for 5K yards, wins the Super Bowl and league MVP……

If he does anything that generates a negative headline, I have the discretion to void the contract or the incentives. If he continues as a middle of the road QB, he gets $8 mil a year. I can build a team around that.

I see this as a buyer’s market for Winston. Try to get him at a bargain. IDK, this is what I would try. If you really tire of him, he is at such a friendly contract he would be easy to trade.

What is the quote? “Never let good crisis go to waste”

  28. Joseph Mamma Says:

Put the old “no crotch grabbing and hanging out with convicted rapists” clause in his contract. Pretty standard language nowadays when you sign your face of the franchise to a multi-year deal.

  29. Dewey Selmon Says:

Steven, you are right, it is geared toward getting people to respond for the fights and arguments. the traffic helps Joe get advertising and that means money. it’s all about marketing. I’m sure if Joe went on national tv with Florio he wouldn’t say it though.

  30. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Getting Mike Florio’s take on the contract means a lot, since he was a Lawyer for many years.
But one has to wonder WHY Jason Licht did not protect us better, with specific language written INTO the contract, in case Jameis did some crazzy chit again ?
It would seem that we are not as in the drivers seat regarding Jameis as we thought because if he is put on the field, and gets hurt, look out!

  31. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning

The owner’s can’t put conduct clauses in that 5th year contract option….that is part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement…

What I’m saying is that they should be able to. But that will have to be negotiated with the player’s union.

  32. Steven007 Says:

Dewey, I agree. I’ve used that reality (eyes on advertisers) when I’ve explained repeatedly why they let Trollmax back while insisting he change his name (to Reality-Is-I’m-Still-A-Troll) to keep the facade of a “ban” on him. Prime example of a response to fights and arguments (I’ve been guilty of this but it’s fun to play with an idiot troll). But if they went on national TV with Florio they will have fulfilled that mission, no? So there’s no way they’d acknowledge that.

  33. Lamarcus Says:

But but but Joe…… JW has been America Qb since FSU. What are these ppl talking about? They sound like piss poor babies

  34. BrianBucs Says:

Since I have written 3 posts that have not appeared in the comments section today, Joe is either having a technical problem or playing the censorship card.
If it’s technical I hope Joe quickly gets it fixed. If it is censorship then I am greatly disappointed

  35. NPR SageBoy Says:

Why are we even talking about a fifth year option? Wait for the League to release their report and see what happened. If he’s squeeky clean, excerise the option. Otherwise……

  36. Sc Bucs fan Says:

I don’t care, joe can run this blog as he sees fit. From the posts it’s clear there are some people that post here that are clueless about football and, it seems, about life in general. One thing for sure, if you disagree with Joe or his opinions you are free to leave. Me, I just argue until I’m put in time out.

  37. Steven007 Says:

BrianBucs, of all the local Bucs blogs who’d have thunk that JBF would be the one to enact a Nanny State policy? Not saying they have of course, but if what you say is true that’s exactly what it is. Of course “Joe is responsible for every word on his website” so there’s that.

  38. Sc Bucs fan Says:

And JW remains snuggled in his cone of silence

  39. Defense Rules Says:

I love Florio’s take on Jameis’ 5th year option, but it strikes me as being pretty much irrelevant, for right now at least. How do you NOT play Jameis in 2018? He’s either the future or he’s not … only one way to find out. $20 mil is nothing to sneeze at to be sure, but cutting him, trading him or sitting him (at this point at least) accomplishes nothing. Glazers may be really pissed about the bad publicity this who sordid affair has brought on the franchise, but in the final analysis, they’re businessmen. They’ll ultimately do what’s best for the Bucs’ franchise. And getting rid of Jameis right now is not in their best interest. Replacing him with someone as talented as Jameis is would cost them a LOT more than $20 mil.

  40. Dewey Selmon Says:

Jamies is on a 13 game tryout this year. next year could have a new GM, HC, and QB.

  41. AlteredEgo Says:

Dewey I don’t think the G’Boyz will hold Licht and Koetter responsible for Jameis’s troubles…. a new QB is a very real possibility and probably a wise move. Licht has done a very good job improving the talent and the present coaching staff will get a chance to grow with them,IMO

  42. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Agree with Defense

The Bucs stick with Jameis…..unless there is more there than reported…..I’m assuming the worst….that he groped and lied about it……(assuming)…

If that is the case….they stick with Jameis….now if he somehow really stinks up his 12-13 games….all bets are off…..but I don’t think he’ll do that.

  43. Dooshlarue Says:

Can’t we just let his contract expire, let him sign with another team and receive a 1st round draft pic in compensation?
    Isn’t that how it works?

  44. BrianBucs Says:

    TBBF

Thanks. I figured and was hoping that was the case
