Buckner Chews Out GMC, D-Line

June 7th, 2018

Video captures tirade.

Man, this Brentson Buckner is no one to fool with.

Mind you, the Bucs just finished up OTAs today — underwear football! This will continue next week during the mandatory three-day minicamp (also underwear football). But for Buckner, the first-year Bucs defensive line coach, it is as if it’s the fourth quarter in a tie game with the Belicheats in the Super Bowl.

Jeff Tewksbury, the talented multimedia sports guy for WTVT-TV Channel 13, just happened to have his camera rolling when America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, used a hard count to draw Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy offsides.

But that wasn’t the highlight. What happened afterwards was priceless.

Buckner, though the audible is a bit sketchy, launched into a first-class arse-chewing on GMC and presumably the rest of the defensive line. You can’t make out what Buckner is saying but you can hear him screaming and see his animated demeanor. Most of his venom is directed right at GMC. Buckner is damned near in GMC’s grill.

Just think, Buckner went off on a simple hard count foul up in underwear football. In June. Imagine what he is like when the real bullets start flying come September.

I don’t play no favors. I don’t care! You don’t have to like me but you’re gonna respect me!!! I love this coach!

  2. SB Says:

    Get in that A$$!!!!!

  3. Dave Pear Says:

Really looks like GMC does not appreciate people getting into his grill. What say you Tmax?

  4. Buc4life Says:

That’s what we need! Somebody who isn’t going to cuddle GMC or any other player who makes careless mistakes when a game is on the line. It’s called ACCOUNTABILITY! That is what make teams into champions.

  5. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Only defense of GMC is he played his best ball when Schiano was coaching like this

  6. johnnybuc Says:

you can tell he is talking to the whole group but the message is directly to mccoy. love it when he says you don’t have to like me but you will respect me . the work has only just started for that group, i have high hopes

  7. SB Says:

@Dusthy……..so did LVD by a Longshot.

  8. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Hope Mr. Buckner is renting. Fastest way out of town is trying to hold a buccaneer accountable. Glazers care more about feelings than wins.

  9. Destinjohnny Says:

    Love this
    We are soft
    Buck ain’t soft
How do you get a buck jersey?

  10. Defense Rules Says:

@Reality … “Fastest way out of town is trying to hold a buccaneer accountable.” Bob Dylan wrote & sang a great song called ‘The Times They Are A-Changin’ that applies here. ACCOUNTABILITY is the name of the game for all great teams. Buckner is doing nothing more than holding his DLine accountable. Personally applaud that. ANY player that thinks he above that won’t last … and that includes GMC. Prediction BTW is that he won’t get selected as a captain this year. The times they are a-changin.

  11. Lamarcus Says:

GMC is going to cry in the car……

  12. Anonymous Says:

    I. Love. It.

This guy…I swear, this D-Line isn’t going to be a clown show this year, or there’ll be a funeral.

  13. Anonymous Says:

Buckner is going to be so popular he could run for mayor soon.

  14. Buc50 Says:

Yeah…fastest way to be a head coach is to let other coaches and players know you mean business and get results. If Buckner gets these guys to perform, it will only increase his already blossoming coaching career.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

I want a Brentson Buckner jersey.

  16. Buc believer Says:

Buckner better be careful or GMC just may storm into the Glazers office and DEMAND to know why after all these coaches and after ALL these years he is being held accountable now! Way to go coach!! 😊

  17. put up or shut up Says:

that’s the way uh huh uh huh i like it uh huh uh huh

  18. webster Says:

Mccoy’s face was priceless. I hope buckners act isnt already wearing too thin. Mccoy did not look happy

  19. Doctor Stroud Says:

If you think that GMC looks mad now, wait until you see his face when Licht asks him to take a pay cut to pay Jameis Winston.

  20. webster Says:

Btw…we know mccoy has a jumping offside problem at times. Our fans love to beat up swaggy for that critical play late against the panthers but mccoy has had his fair share of offsides. This can only be a good thing imo.

  21. JayBucBoi Says:

No he’s talking right to McCoy!! He’s having others guys “Amen” the fact that he’s chewed them out for simple mistakes just like he’s doing GMc!!
Sounds like GMc walked off from Buck chewing him out, causing Buck to explode!!! … And call McCoy out for being “childish.”

That’s how we do in the military: “You don’t have to like me, but you will respect me!.” Why? Because it’s not about trying to be your friend, or preserving your feelings, it’s about succeeding in our overall mission. It’s about making you a better asset for the unit (or team) and, in the end, a better man/woman!
    NO WEAK LINKS.

Coach Buck could have been a drill sergeant!!

  22. Anonymous Says:

    Drill Sergeant Buckner!!

  23. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

SB, right on, i wish schiano got a better shot but its 2018

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I can only imagine that being Swaggy Baker…….Instead of a tree, Swaggy would be hugging a Hillsborough County Sherriff begging for protection.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Sheriff

  26. Reach87 Says:

Funny. First, lets go ahead and presume these pros never had a coach yell at them. Second lets presume if he hadn’t yelled everyone would be all smiles at practice in the Florida heat. Funny. Only thing I get from this is that Buckner is active and vocal. While it inspires hope the d-line will get better, it doesn’t show diddley about how they will perform as a unit or individually (after next week, thru training camp and pre-season). On the right track, but any presumptions otherwise (McCoy doesn’t like to be coached, he’s going to cry, the glazers will fire Buckner because McCoy says so…) are all a bunch of whooey. Go Bucs!

  27. EA Says:

Why is he wearing a hooded sweatshirt in June in Florida ?

  28. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Ok, THAT does it. Ice Cream for EVERYONE!

  29. Capt Kidd Says:

I don’t even see McCoy in that video. The black guy directly in front of him is #97, McCoy is 93

  30. Not there yet Says:

I haven’t laughed this hard in a while that was hilarious. All things are equal and it means more doing this to the hometown hero of sorry defenses than doing it to a rookie lol look out JPP your next.

Truth of the matter is McCoy had no choice but to like it because the guaranteed money in his contract is about up….you’ve lived the life so far with little accountability for your mistakes but finally someone is I his face. Your not the planet you think you are because you do need to be better.

It’s different coming from a guy like buck who knows what it looks like and can show you his game tape

  31. Joe Says:

I don’t even see McCoy in that video.

Not wearing a helmet. Look right over Brentson Buckner’s right shoulder.

  32. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

“All that walking away …. is coward” Coach Buc

  33. Ndog Says:

Below is the 2018 prediction for our Bucs this year from SI. I get hesitation but this is freaking crazy talk.

    TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS: 2-13-1
The Bucs were one of the most disappointing teams last season after a solid offseason and plenty of hype (some of it by yours truly). Dirk Koetter got to keep his job even though his team took a gigantic step back in 2017 on both offense and defense. Tampa Bay desperately needed pass rush help and got it in Vita Vea and Jason Pierre-Paul. But the offense had no reason to struggle like it did in Jameis Winston’s third season. Tampa Bay has finished last in the division seven of the past nine seasons, and it looks to happen again in 2018.

  34. softastissueMcCoy93 Says:

Looking McCoy in his face and called him a coward. Go Coach Buc!!

  35. Howard Cosell Says:

Winston’s cadence was “Ice cream! Ice Cream! Haagen Daz! Hut Hut!!”

McCoy couldn’t take it any more so he jumped offsides.
To add insult to injury McCoy late found out that Winston didn’t actually have any ice cream.

  36. donuts Says:

The whole team needs a reality check. This type of coaching is refreshing. If they would have switched out Bajakian, I would have more confidence that change could occur with Winston. Can Buck coach the QBs too?

  37. DB55 Says:

Meh. Mccoy been jumping offsides on 3rd and short for years. 2 years ago he did it twice on back to back plays. McDonald let him hear it and then McDonald got less playing time then ship out of town (not re-signed).

Truth is exactly what Webster said. Buckner is now on the hot seat. Don’t be surprised if he’s run out of town shortly.

ButMan McIceCream is a complete joke but as long as he smiles big and feeds the media and of course stands during the anthem he will always be loved down yonder.

This team will NEVER win as long as tutti frutti mcpopsicle is on this roster. #Truth

  38. BringBucsBack Says:

McCoy: “Does this guy have any idea how much money I make? He’s clearly talking to everybody else!”

  39. DB55 Says:

I think Licht made a huge mistake getting rid of McDonald and Ayers. I could swear there not here bc they RNs and McIceCream a little biatch who can’t take criticism and refuses to leave it all on the field.

Swaggy was not the problem, neither was Schiano. Only one constant in the last 8 years it not that difficult to figure out.

  40. Not there yet Says:

I hope they have some kind of plan in my for coach buc. I bet he had a playbook ready for anyone wanting to make him a coordinator.

  41. John5 Says:

@DB55 Swaggy was not the problem and neither was Schiano?! And You’re attacking McCoy?! Wow… I don’t what’s worse; you saying this nonsense or having a username that references my favorite buccaneer of all time while doing so… SMH

I’m glad to see a coach with some damn fire for a change. This isn’t Girl Scouts it’s the the NFL! Things like that from a veteran shouldn’t be taken lightly. It’s get up and go time!

  42. Thomas Bowery Says:

About freaking time we have a coach that will not accept mediocrity. Thanks coach Buckner!!!!!! Welcome to Tampa Bay

  43. webster Says:

    @ db55

I never said buckner is on the hot seat. I was just asking is buckner’s act wearing thin? Will these players wilt or hold up to the pressure? We shall see my brotha!!!

  44. webster Says:

    @ db55

You know we have had our run ins but when i look at mccoy’s face in this video, it looks like he is tapping out. Jameis told his coaches to coach him harder and thats why i ride for him but it looks like mccoy wants to tap out. Was mccoy tapping out? Anyone who post on jbf knows i am not a mccoy basher but please tell me does it look like he wants to tap out? Buckner is in the building!!

  45. kelley rose Says:

looks to me like he is talking to num 97 i dont see 93

  46. Red86 Says:

Yes Kelley Rose he is talking to McCoy. He’s to the right shoulder of the coach. Saying things like “You take it like a man. I pull him out, I pull him out the other day. (Pointing at two different players.) I don’t play favor.”

  47. Onetrickpony Says:

GMC is looking like, can we please have a group hug now ?

  48. Reach87 Says:

Again, all in a days practice…getting yelled at. Dude made a mistake and got corrected. Happens all the time, even to McCoy. He said so after day one of practice this year. Happens to everyone who plays from college to the pros. But that doesn’t fit the played out narrative for some. Rather focus on one common incident and turn it into a referendum on arguably our best defensive player (I didn’t say HOF’r). Wouldn’t you rather focus on the team? Sad. Go Bucs!

  49. gotbbucs Says:

The one defensive lineman in the group that doesn’t have his helmet on….?

  50. Trench War Says:

    GMC looked none to happy.

  51. Not there yet Says:

It doesn’t happen everyday in the NFL. The looked on McCoy gave shoes he’s never been talked to like that before. All these years, all the cameras especially on hard knocks and every off-season I’ve never seen rookies getting yelled at before which is part. Joe Cullen yelled but he was never up in anyone’s face. I remember Bryan Cox getting into it with a linebacker on the sideline. What happened to the player? There’s never been accountability never consequences.

Everyone killed saggy after jumping offside in the Panthers game but that line got manhandled the entire season and in that game and he probably felt like they weren’t going to stop anybody anyway. McCoy want the one up in his face because he is a softy. Buc is saving dorks job

  52. Bob in Valrico Says:

Joe Cullen was also known for getting in players faces. I remember McCoy getting mad at him
and apologizing the next day. So in retropect our D-line took a step backwards
with Hayes who had the advantage of a pretty good Cincy D line.
Having only McCoy and Macdonald who basically play the same position was not enough to field a quality D line. That is the one constant in the last eight years:
Lack of enough talent on the Dline. Casting MacDonald as a run stuffer at 300lbs.
led to injuries each year. At 340 Lbs. Baker was getting pushed around by double teams. Ayers only gave us 10 starts each of the last two years and missed 4 games a year for the last 4 years. Add to that ,no pass rush from the outsideand that spells trouble.

  53. Bob in Valrico Says:

I expect Buckner to have both McCoy and Vea push up the middle to collapse the pocket and allow our new and improved defensvie line players to add more sacks from the outside and give LB’s better lanes to QB also.

  54. Bucsfanman Says:

Great! Who cares?! This is June. It has to translate to the field. Judging by Joe’s practice notes yesterday Mike Smith’s defense got worked over.
Everybody loves to jump on the GMC train, but there are 10 other players on defense. EVERY LAST ONE needs to step up. If they need Buckner in their face for motivation we’ve already lost. Chew on that!
    The insanity continues!

  55. webster Says:

    @ bucsfanman

What are you talking about? Mike smith’s defense got worked? Where were you last week when the defense was picking off passes left and right for a few practices? This article is not about offense or defense. Its about accountability period. Sorry you missed that.

  56. Bucnjim Says:

It’s about setting a standard that holds EVERYONE accountable. This has been missing since Gruden left. Schiano struggled to motivate NFL athletes because he couldn’t let go of his college coaching style. You can scream at grown men but you better be able to back it up with talent.

  57. Papa578 Says:

Accountability…ahhhh, how refreshing. Keep up the hard work coach Buckner. It looks like coach has a “shape up or ship out” mentality. Bout’ dang time!

  58. Not there yet Says:

I bet he never had to yell at calais Campbell like that lol. Gmc is a big baby anyway. He’s finesse type player which doesn’t work up front. You can say he’s elite all you want but when Campbell is on a team he makes a difference same with Aaron Donald and the dude from the eagles. I dont care how many pro bowl he makes if you can’t make a difference during the season. He’d soft which is why kwon called out saggy baker and not gmc. Softy from the raheem Josh freeman era

  59. Doctor Stroud Says:

Bucnjim has it right! Jay Hayes yelled at the players, too, and was often the loudest coach out there. Did that make the players perform any better? You send a message by cutting players that don’t play well. That will speak volumes!

  60. webster Says:

    Doctor stroud

Actually jay hayes was the quietest coach on the bucs staff. Thats why they brought in the polar opposite.

  61. Reach87 Says:

Bucsfan: Great! Who cares?! This is June.
    ——
That’s what I’m saying. People are looking for any reason to jump on McCoy (even a piddly “yell session” in June (June) which I guarantee he’s had before in his career). Focus on the DL as a whole. What will it look like after pre-season when games count? The alternative is to look at arguably our best defensive player over the past years, and nitpick his facial expressions at practice in Tampa. Or presume he’s never been pushed (I guess at OU and in his first years here he just showed up and was never corrected?). BL: many use the slightest (slightest) recourse to focus it directly on one player. 53+ other players and coaches need to step up for us to win this fall.

    Go Bucs!

  62. unbelievable Says:

The weird emotional fetish some fans have with GMC is so strange. You guys make the strangest assumptions about this guy.

    Bucsfanman says:
Great! Who cares?! This is June.

Exactly. A football player got yelled at in practice, big deal. McCoy has been yelled at before, and will be again I’m sure.

He didn’t look like he was enjoying it? No chit. Most people don’t enjoy being yelled at, especially when they’re sweating their a$$es off after working hard all day.

Ya’ll making a big deal out of nothing.

  63. Bucsfanman Says:

@webster- I don’t know why you’re always so quick to jump on someone. Read Joe’s practice notes from YESTERDAY and tell me all about how the defense did so well. The context was in that Buckner had good reason to chew the defense if it was struggling.
Try reading a post before you get your panties in a bunch! You’re bordering on being a tool.

  64. Dooshlarue Says:

    Not to worry Ol’ Softie.
Please give Hawaiian Buc a call and he can reaffirm your greatness, because obviously Buckner isn’t aware of how truly awesome you really are.
    That number is 808-TOO-SOFT
The pathetic operator is standing by.

  65. Dlavid Says:

Looked like McCoy had that “ F#### you” look on his face to me ! As long as he is collecting those big checks he better buckle down ! The past doesn’t matter, new dollars rolling in every week so earn it big boy !

  66. webster Says:

    @ bucfanman

The fact that your head coach yesterday said the defense won the day again should shed some light. But no, lets throw out false narratives. Thats always the way to go. Tool that.

  67. SOEbuc Says:

Make GMC a tough man and player Buck. Maybe turn him into a real Dline captain like he has been called all these years.

I really, really don’t want to lose this guy to another team next year. We need to throw him a nice extension like we did Mike Smith so Buck can’t get away. So hard core, I want him as DC already and we’re in June with no contact.

  68. SOEbuc Says:

This Dline is going to be sick. Making a mistake in the regular season on the sideline and this dude is going to make you cry. You’re not going to make that mistake again.

“You know how they treat their criminals in Russia? First offense, five years in Siberia. Second offense, 10 years. Believe you me, there is no third offense.”

  69. Bucsfanman Says:

Love those know it all keyboard warriors!
Tell your mom to make me a sandwich before she tucks you in little boy!
    You’re right. You’re not a tool!

  70. jmarkbuc Says:
