“The Practices Already Have Been Different”

June 4th, 2018

New era

Yes, the Bucs mightily fought to the finish last year to the great appreciation of coaches, ownership and executives.

No quit in those Bucs, they claim. But things are changing radically at One Buc Palace.

If you missed how the defense is being retooled and re-taught, catch up here.

It’s not just that, Gerald McCoy told NFL Network recently, spring practice has a new feel.

“Last year wasn’t good enough. But this year, I think everybody came into the building this offseason already knowing that with a different mindset. And the practices already have been different compared to last year’s OTAs,” McCoy said.

From McCoy’s perspective, it seems the workplace is absent a notable layer of BS.

“You know, we brought in a new d-line coach [Brentson Buckner]. Man, I love him, love him to death already,” McCoy said. “The reason I love him he keeps it so real, man. He don’t lie to you. He don’t sugarcoat nothing. With me from Day 1, he told me how it’s going to be, how it is, what he didn’t like from last year and what he expects from me this year, man. You know, Coach Buck, he’s a great guy and he’s a great coach.”

Joe is very pleased to hear of various subtle changes around One Buc Palace, like what McCoy passionately described, though Joe remains a bit baffled there wasn’t more change on the defensive coaching staff.

Whatever it takes to get this team revved up so it can find a way to go 2-2 against a brutal opening schedule.

Sos is overrated. So many factors involved. The fact that that Buccs catch new orleans early (without ingram) is positive, considering both teams will be coming off preseason. Philadelphia may likely have a rusty Wentz when we face them in the Tampa heat. Pittsburgh will be coming to Tampa on short week playing in a jacked up Ray J in humid conditons, too.

    Or maybe Sly Stallone???

  4. Joe Says:

    Gino:

SOS to Joe either means sh!t out of luck or a distress signal or Steven Orr Spurrier.

So, yeah, SOS/distress does apply to the Bucs. 🙂

Special teams coaches needed to go also!

    And Warhop!

Logan Mankines was the real coach. Warhop aint it! Oniel Cousins. Enough said!

I rewatched the 2002 NFC Championship and Super Bowl.

We were nasty on special teams! We hit people!!

And Sapp and Rice didn’t come out

  6. Geno Says:

Maybe Susan Sarandon in everything but Rocky Horry Picture show and Bull Durham. (not sure how to add the smiley face Joe).

  7. Chuckie Says:

    Strength of schedule.

I hope the players coaches want and expect a 4-0 first quarter.

    No less

2-2 not a goal should it be for me.

No more low goals and zero excuses this year. Go get it!!!

    Go Bucs!

  8. Buc50 Says:

hmmm…what could be different this year? No humping things in practice, no laughing at kicker, no loafing on plays, people who actually put their heart and soul into practice

  9. Tnoles Says:

Like I said in a previous post- where is McCoy in the 4th qtr. When a stop is needed. How about a sack to knock the other team out of field goal range and as a result we win the game. Now that McCoy has pieces around him let’s see what he really is as a player. I know I’ll be watching McCoy in the 4th. No more excuses Gerald! Put up or shut up period.

  10. feelthepewterpower Says:

lol @Spurrier, Joe. SOS has many factors. When you play a team (is either team coming off a bye, is it early in the season when teams haven’t hit full stride, does either team have anything to play for if later on in the year), how healthy a team is, weather (hot, cold, severe wind/rain/snow), travel (west coast flying to east coast for an early game), is the game home or away, how are both teams playing, etc.

As fans we have recency bias. 2017 has zero to do with 2018. Different players, different coaches, different results. Yet, we panic thinking the Buccs will automatically start out 0-3 or whatever based on 2017.

  11. feelthepewterpower Says:

I do agree with the sense of urgency, however…The Buccs/ team mindset should be to win the division as that’s the ONLY guarantee of playoffs. Every game will be vitally important, and if the team can get off to a fast start, it will buoy the finish down the stretch where the Buccs are playing their division games at home!

  12. Anonymous Says:

Hopefully they won’t have the same Club Med training camp last year.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Tough schedule Bucs. But probably say..25 or 6 other teams feel the same way.
Our 1st 6 games will be critcal. We mot have 3..or 4 of them in order to stay in the hunt. Whatever it takes..Get it done. I have a better feeling about our Bucs this year. But I’ve had that before.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Whatever it takes to get this team revved up so it can find a way to go 2-2 against a brutal opening schedule.”

I agree with Chuckie … set your goals low & you’ll achieve low. Eagles, Steelers, Bears & Falcons are ALL beatable. Bucs might be at a slight disadvantage in the first 2 games because we have so many new players (especially on defense). But so do the Eagles (we did after all snare a couple of their stalwarts on defense). Steelers are solid, but they started slow last year for them (3-2) before going on a 10-1 rampage. Every year is different obviously, but like Chuckie said “No more low goals and zero excuses this year. Go get it!!!”

  15. Not there yet Says:

Way too many people worried about the first quarter of the season. To be honest we have top tier offensive weapons so I’m more worried about Winston turnover issues than I am the defense this time around that dude has got to wake up. D Jack’s is a waste of you can’t hit him deep and I believe the league knows theoffenses weakness is inaccurate passes

Also, they will be wearing their black jerseys, making it even hotter. In the Philly game I see Curry and Allan playing with a good size chip on their shoulder because Philly let them both go. Very humid time of the year, bring on the cramps. GO BUCS

    Tnoles,

Your message is played out. It’s been said in nearly every post. Do you not read them or have an agenda?

Thomas Bassenger had an article in yesterday’s Times that perfectly illustrated what you just said. You are correct sir.

If you think about it teams don’t even necessarily play the same teams just the same franchise. IE…One team catches a good team really early before they’ve come together…or a team catches another later with the other team crushed by injuries…two teams last year with “difficult” schedules at the beginning of the year actually turned out with fairly easy schedules when you run the numbers after the season.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I like that we kept our DB coaches so they continue their fine job of developing our young DBs and they have 3 new ones….(at least)…….Evans & Smith are coming along and Elliott is well worth the UDFA pricetag…. VH3 is the only question mark and he may just turn around……

Sure am glad we got the CBs in the draft instead of punters….I like Brian Anger…arguably one of the best Buc players.

    Develop on!!!

Steelers also play in a weak division, in a weaker conference, with an aging QB in Ben Roethlisberger.

  23. Couch Fan Says:

So is McCoy saying the Dline coach last year lied to him and didnt keep it real with him?…..

  24. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Couch Fan

Yes!!! He said he was great and that he was one of the top DT in the NFL!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Couch Fan Says:

    @Realist

In that case I can believe it!

  26. Trench War Says:

Let’s the Bucs come out against N.O. and makes a serious statement, and then put the Eagles on notice. Don’t think you’re coming into our house without a battle.

  27. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Trench War

People have been coming into gmc’s house and punking him and team for a drcade plus. Bucs have not had a home field advantage in 16 years but lets not let reality get in the way.

  28. Trench War Says:

    @Reality-is-a-Beotch

    party-pooper

  29. Ptwalk Says:

@Reality-is-a-botch your Tmax is showing again. The Bucs defense actually played lights out at hm last yr, I think they gave up like 15 point a gm. It was on the road that they stunk up the joint.

  30. Eric Says:

So glad there is no more lying and sugar coating.

  31. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Oh Reality,

And people have been going to your boy Donald’s house and punking the Rams for how long now? That was with 4 1st rounders on the Dline. What you got on that big boy? The baddest D tackle in the league couldn’t carry his team? What? With Quinn and Brockers the Rams were hot garbage. It took the offensive guy McVeigh to turn them around. Sound familiar Bucs fans. Like 2002. A great D tackle can’t take a team to the playoffs by himself in case you didn’t know. Your posts are so asinine!

  32. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

    Ptwalk

You and i clearly have a different definition of lights out. Bucs defense has not played lights out since sapp walked out the door. Home record last decade plus is truly embarrassing.

Time for them to earn it on field unyil then they simply are soft and division basement dwellers

  33. Realbucfan941 Says:

And Greg Williams/Wade Phillips far better D coordinator than we’ve had the last 10 years.

  34. Eric Says:

Why do I feel like we’re all Charlie Brown and Lucy is holding the football.

    Same bs every year.

  35. webster Says:

    @ realbucfan

Your post was asinine. See this is what i am talking about when i say uneducated/idiot fan base. Realbucfan, sapp made the playoffs atleast 4 times before gruden got here. He was also a DPOY before gruden arrived. Smdh.

    Dear jameies………….

  36. webster Says:

Sapp would skip through the other team’s warm ups every game at ray j just to let them know he was in the house. He set a tone.

  37. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Webster,

No you sir are the idiot. Sapp did it all huh? All by himself. Not Rice, Abraham,Lynch, D Jax, Kelley, Barber, Marcus Jones, Kiffin and a soundly played Tampa 2 that had not been figured out yet until Manning found the cover 2 beaters then the league replicated… That’s what got them there stooge. Not one guy. Now Go ahead

  38. Realbucfan941 Says:

By skipping through warmups. LOL Ok

  39. Realbucfan941 Says:

You reminiscing fairies just spew sapp sapp sapp. I din’t even mention Brooks

  40. Realbucfan941 Says:

It’s called a “TEAM” and the Bucs had a great “DEFENSE”. Sapp didn’t go to the playoffs every year so there goes the it was all Sapp idea!

  41. webster Says:

    @ realbucfan

Rice only got here for one playoff run with sapp before gruden got here. The ends was ahonatu and marcus jones. Two players that did absolutely nothing when they did not play with sapp. Brad culpepper did absolutely nothing when he was not lined up with sapp. Check culpeppers sack totals in chicago the year he left sapp fell off the cliff. Make no mistake about it, sapp was the straw you idiot. The team took on his personality you idiot. He made all decade for defensive tackle for both the 9o’s and ’00 you idiot. He is a first ballot hall of famer for a reason you idiot. You should not have come back with that we @$$ take. Btw…..i know it takes a tem. The rams defense has been good. The offense was holding them back in years previous just like the bucs defense is holding them back. Donald is fine ie DPOY just like jameis is fine as the qb.

  42. webster Says:

On last thing. You laugh at sapp running through the warmups? Obviously you are a new buc fan. Monday night football and the like would love to show sapp do that. The fans at ray j loved to see that. He set a tone idiot. Your take was weak sauce!!!!

  43. Drew aka q Says:

Lol man i really wish mccoy would just shut up … just play ball and shut up

  44. richbucsfan Says:

Talk is cheap. I know there are papers to sell and blog posts to publish and appreciate that; however, I think the fan base is tired of the incessant hype. Let’s wait until mid-season to see what the Bucs really are all about. It is no longer enjoyable to drink the kool-aid and endure the disappointment of another failed season.

  45. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Webster,

I’m a new buc fan huh, we had season tickets in the old sombrero. The point youre missing you idiot is that Sapp was great but doesn’t make a team by himself. I’m very familiar with what he did in warm ups but tell me how that gets your team more wins you idiot. Oh and Marcus Jones did nothing how about 13 sacks without googling you idiot. I guess you were too stuck up sspps ass. When all said and done he’ll have played with 4 HOF players. How many will McCoy have? You idiot… Again, team game. Not basketball stooge, go troll someone else. Oh and what has Aaron Donald done to get his team over the hump? Answer that idiot!

  46. Realbucfan941 Says:

And ps. If you think you know more than me about this team stay on here live. We can go back and forth and I’ll put you in your place kid.

  47. Realbucfan941 Says:

And when we were getting blown out in Philly back to back how did Sapp take over those games???? Idiot

  48. Realbucfan941 Says:

Skipping through their practices really helped. Lol Loser. Unless you have something better to say than Sapp was a generational talent. Just shut up. You make no sense.

  49. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Warmups

  50. donuts Says:

Does this mean more wins? I am still not sure yet.

  51. webster Says:

    @ realbucfan

You need to google you idiot. I clearly said what did marcus jones etc do without lining up next to sapp. Those players sucked when they played on another team idiot. Fact, sapp demanded excellence from his teammates. He whipped ahanatou @$$ in the lockerroom. He told his entire team in 1996 at breakfast before the san diego game after he heard chris berman call them the yucks that this $hit ends today. From that day on the bucs were a winning team. Ask ray lewis about infecting the lockerroom with a winning mentality idiot. You may have had season tickects but you were a clueless dolt because you clearly missed who ran that team idiot. Oh and work on your comprehension skills.

  52. 813bucboi Says:

    SOS……that’s BS…..

how about we go 0-16 so we can have the easiest schedule so there wont be any excuses……lol…..

SOS is not an excuse to have a lousy team…..every team in the NFL has to play the same amount of games….injuries and suspensions will happen…..no excuse…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  53. Realbucfan941 Says:

    So Webster,
You failed to answer my questions idiot. My guess is you have no answer for them. And how did a post about current bucs turn into your obsession about Sapp. Talk about reading comprehension skills. Since youre so stuck on the past why don’t you start a joe bucs fan from the 90s and comment there. And I’m fully aware of Sapps nfluence on the team, was that in question idiot? ..but what’s the relavence today? You want the bucs to sign him? You’re the dolt harping on the past on a forum of the CURRENT team. Get a life. Or you still rock a mullet and listen to 80s music? Spires, booger, Culpeper, White, Darby were all role players but they did their jobs. You’re comparison to Sapp baffles me. Why don’t you compare LVD to Brooks or Hargreaves to Dwight Smith, or Grimes to Barber. Makes no sense idiot. We’re talking about THIS team. But I guess you don’t get that. Stay ignorant, can’t teach stupid!!

  54. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Influence

  55. CalBucsFan Says:

    The practices have been different…ok….but….

“We’re talking about practice man. We’re talking about practice. We’re talking about practice. We’re not talking about the game. We’re talking about practice.” (Allen Iverson)

    Yawn…..
