Practice Notes, First Day Of OTAs

May 22nd, 2018

Will Gholston attacks the blocking sled as DL coach Brentson Buckner hangs on in today’s first OTA practice.

Notes and observations from the first underwear football practice with the full squad this morning.

* Not sure if true or not but America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston’s feet look quicker in drills.

* Quarterbacks doing drills running to their left as if being chased out of pocket and lofting passes to wrs deep in end zone.

* Now quarterbacks are doing the same to the right with coaches chasing them wearing long-arm pads like you see cops wear when training K9 dogs to attack. All of this under the watchful gaze of offensive coordinator Todd Monken.

* One handed catch by fullback Austin Johnson from Ryan Fitzpatrick.

* Cam Brate smoothly catches pass from Jameis over the middle. Seen that before.

* Yeah, it is just underwear football. But O.J. Howard looks like a force out there.

* Bucs (Monken) running a drill with tight ends where tight ends have to run down-and-outs, cutting in front of an assistant coach acting as a linebacker without touching the coach/linebacker.

* During topless football period (no helmets), center Ryan Jensen looks like a wild man or Batman villain with his long curly red hair.

* For a while Bucs had Cole Gardner at left tackle. Donovan Smith is in a baseball cap not practicing.

* Vita Vea getting reps with first team defense… at least with GMC taking a break.

* DeSean Jackson short pass over right side in space. More of this, please.

* Rookie corner Carlton Davis up against Mike Evans. Breaking in the rookie quick. Evans ain’t no exterminator in rookie minicamp.

* Every time Joe sees No. 27 in the backfield Joe can hear inept Lovie Smith talking about Mike Jenkins.

* Jameis rifled a forced pass to Peyton Barber and it is picked by Justin Evans.

* Hhhmmm? Ronald Jones lined up wide right in a play during passing drills.

  3. Joe Says:

Dang that’s an ugly photo of Jones.

  4. Steven007 Says:

Jesus, that picture of Jones is embarrassing. He looks like Chris Johnson. Let’s hope he plays like Chris Johnson.

  5. Etzel Says:

Jenkins was #24. Banks was #27.

    I still have nightmares.

  6. Baz Says:

Jensen looks like a Batman villain, eh? How appropriate since GMC wants to be Batman! Let’s hope Ryan continues to terrorize all opposing DT’s!

  7. JB Says:

Rojo was an excellent receiver out of the backfield for SC. Their OL was pretty porous so their opponents brought a lot of inside pressure, springing him on short routes and bubble screens.

  8. Dubcity06 Says:

Forced passes by Jameis is practice huh?

  9. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks for the practice observations Joe. Great stuff as usual.

  10. Wausa Says:

You would think Davis and Stewart going up against the Bucs receivers should really help when the real bullets start to fly, but I think VH3 getting roasted in practice may have hurt his psyche.

  11. Joe Says:

Yes Etzel, but you are missing the point

Didn’t see him “working.” (Koetter has a habit of guys standing in a line to block our view so what we actually do see is limited.)

Lineman can’t hit anyone so OTAs is as close to worthless for linemen as it gets. Only thing they practice on is line-calls and footwork.

As Mike Evans just said, OTAs is more for quarterbacks and receivers than anything. Think flag football with helmets.

    LMAO!!!

That Rojo picture, in comparison to all those other normal ones, is one of the craziest/funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life.

    Wow.

He’s gonna be our Jamal Charles, though, so he can act as silly as he wants as long as he’s the Man. (Like I believe he is)

  18. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Wausa,

You are 100% spot on in regard to Hargreaves. He was shellshocked after facing Desean Jackson, Mike Evans, Godwin etc everyday and being forced to succumb to their superior physical attributes.

They continually beat into Vh3’s head that he cannot hang with the superior athletically-gifted NFL receivers. And it’s honestly the truth. Just based on Vh3’s lack of speed & size etc.

I think we’re set now with Davis and Grimes (for this year, at least) on the outside and MJ Stewart in the slot.

  19. gilhealy Says:

    Deshaun was there.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If I were a defender, I’d be afraid that Jones would bite me…..will fit in nicely with our mean and rabid new team…..

  21. mike10 Says:

Would be nice to see our corners starting to play more press coverage, more in line w their strengths.

  22. 813bucboi Says:

    joe

thanks….just wanted to know if he was lining up at G or T…..Lord knows we need both…..

tell dirk to pull his skirt down….lol…the only thing that needs to be hidden is whats under his skirt!!!!….lol….either we have it or we don’t….we’ll find out soon enough…..

  25. TampaTown Says:

    Joe’s,
Could you arrange for some attack K9’s to come to OTA’s and rush the OL and hone their skills?

  26. Phillip Says:

They switched it to a new picture. Check his twitter to see the old picture. RJ2k?

Don’t know if the link will be allowed

  27. Phillip Says:

Oops meant Bucs twitter will have it. May 19th

  28. Lunchbox Says:

These notes and the training camp notes are some of my favorite posts you put up Joe. Love it. As for #27, it reminds me of Rabih Abdullah. Kind of obscure lol

  29. Joe Says:

    Thanks Lunchbox.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Everyone saying bad things about VHIII will pretend they always believed in him later.
