No Issue With No Shows

May 23rd, 2018

No worries.

The keyword here is “voluntary.”

And for two guys who have demonstrated for years they can and do play at a high level in the NFL, Joe didn’t mind the absence yesterday of Bucs cornerback Brent Grimes and defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul.

Both are professionals. Both get the job done. And no, Joe doesn’t have any qualms about those guys not being at One Buc Palace yesterday for voluntary OTAs.

Why?

Because they will show up in games. Both have a demonstrated history of doing so.

Anyone who remotely knows JPP understands this guy has a burning inner drive. Not showing up when he doesn’t have to is no sign of laziness or selfishness.

Grimes? Dude will be 35 just before training camp kicks off. In Joe’s eyes, the more he can stay off his feet, the better. The Bucs need him healthy in the worst way. For the entire season. If he and Miko believe the best way to reach that goal is to limit his steps on a practice field, so be it.

And by the way, Joe has to offer major props to DeSean Jackson. He was there yesterday getting in more work with America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston. That’s not usually his bag, being at voluntary OTAs.

This surprised Joe because over the weekend, Jackson was enjoying a restful retreat in Cancun full of fine dining, loafing poolside, golf and cigars (Cuban?) judging by his Instagram account.

Grimes is 35 and been on team for a few years. He gets a pass. He has seen almost everything.

JPP- a little disappointed. It’s his 1st year on bucs and should be meeting the rookies and his new buc teammates.

  2. Bird Says:

Plus JPP lives in Tampa ? Cause his son does ?

  3. Walter Seidel Says:

Soooo, you give kudos to Jackson, but a pass to Grimes and JPP? And I don’t care HOW good a player is…..either the OTA’s are valuable…………or they ain’t. Can’t have it both ways.

  4. Realbucfan941 Says:

He lives in Deerfield Beach but still obviously close enough to be there. I hope it’s just a one day type thing. I know he’s a grizzled vet (I mean just look at his hand) but still, new team, new defense just show your face please jpp!

  5. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

Bird i agree totally, being on a new team you would expect him to come in and get familiar with his new teammates at least as well as the defensive calls or vocabulary.

  6. The Buc Realist Says:

It depends on what position you play. But a new player should show up and at least watch and take mental reps and still the young upstarts get the much needed reps!!!!! QB’s, Wr’s, TE’s, Rb’s and centers should all be mandatory as they all need timing and to work in concert together!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Players can still show up for support. They can limit the type of practice they participate in. These guys make plenty of money and they should show respect to their employers.
Imagine if Ryan Jensen didn’t show or Michael Bennett (whoops)….

  8. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I dunno why people complain or cry about it

……If you worked at a place and they did the same thing…..I Guarantee You probably 95% of you who frequent this site wouldn’t show up for work either.

  9. Trench War Says:

Having 2 older veteran players miss the 1st day of voluntary practice is no big deal. Hell, they’ve earned it. They don’t need the reps as much as all the rookies. So, they should not be in fear of losing their jobs. They are proven players and they all will be at scheduled OTAs. No big deal.

  10. BucHead5588 Says:

I would like to see JPP there to start learning but I’m not freaking out about it a excited that D Jack is in the House GOBUCS

  11. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

They definitely should show up and mix it up with their teammates and coach’s its just afew days, esp JPP being a new alleged leader on the defense….so glad the alleged leader in GMC couldnt get JPP to show up or even grimes

  12. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Hey anthem,

If it’s no big deal why are 95% of the players there. We need more Carlton Davis type players. With the new CBA every practice is important. Plus GM’s and coaches take notice. Why did butter not start in the SB? Cause he pissed belichek off…. Now that being said it shouldn’t affect his play as a vet player and he may have given the team a reason, but it’s still a bad look. Look what happened with Djax missing and how did that year go? Yeah I know the position matters but still.

  13. William Walls Says:

I’m pleased to see Diaz here. I harped on him for being away, so I’ll praise him for showing up.

  14. 813bucboi Says:

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  15. superslacker Says:

Not concerned with Grimes’s absence. He’s been with us for awhile. He’s already a good teammate and knows the D.

JPP, on the other hand, doesn’t know his teammates yet, and doesn’t know the defense… so this really doesn’t sit well with me, especially since we gave up a 3rd rounder for him… He ought to be out there working with his new team and getting to know the guys. Selfish, spoiled, diva? When do we get to see the “burning inner drive” that Joe speaks of?

  16. JimmyJack Says:

look dude, its better for the whole team if these guys are present. Any moron knows that……..Im not exactly sure sho im talking to.

  17. TampaTown Says:

Brent Grimes gets a pass no matter what he does. Funny everyone thought he was done and Miko was going to be a problem now everyone loves them, even people who don’t agree with Miko on anything. They’re like the Homecoming King and Queen of Tampa
