No Excuses

May 25th, 2018

Will years of personnel moves finally pay off?

Joe senses the growing excitement for football season. It’s hard to believe training camp starts in roughly two months.

There seems to be a catchphrase Bucs fans are using as Joe reads the many comments on this here website.

“No excuses.”

Bucs fans are fed up with seeing the team select so many top players in the draft and sign so many talented free agents but not seeing results. Looking at the roster, fans do not see, in any way, a five-win team, regardless of the division, regardless of the schedule.

Joe is picking up the same from national NFL analysts. This team has talent. Can they put it together?

Louis Riddick believes there are no excuses. Recently on “NFL Live,” seen on BSPN, the former NFL executive and defensive back said if there is a team in the NFL capable of turning around its fortunes, it is the Bucs.

“There is no reason for the Bucs to not be better than they were last year,” Riddick said. “It is one of those things where you can’t really put your finger on one thing. They just have to, all of them, collectively, play better, raise their game.”

It sounds like Riddick is speaking to Bucs fans.

Bucs fans have seen the team in recent years draft a franchise quarterback, load up on linebackers, load up at wide receiver and tight end and load up on the offensive line. This offseason they watched the team draft a boatload of defensive backs and a speedy running back, not to mention a bull of a defensive tackle.

Few if any positions need addressing. It’s time to put the personnel moves into action and get wins.

Bucs fans are looking at the moves, looking at the roster, and saying to themselves if not outright telling folks in public, “No excuses.”

This team needs wins.

Speaking to or speaking for — Bucs fans?

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The “no excuses” is important for the coaches but it is paramount for the players…..when they see the talent around them, they have to know that they should win…..they should expect to win and be totally unsatisfied when they don’t.

  3. SCBucsFan Says:

I think The Glazers and Licht have given this regime enough toys to show significant improvement so ‘no excuses’ is music to my ears. Clearly the players have to play – look at Swaggy laying down last year and Ward being invisible – but as an outsider you have to think this team is better then its record. Its up to this staff to teach them, motivate them, have game plans to win (not suck in the red zone). Lets hope this is the year it comes together.

  4. Mike Johnson Says:

Thats right Joe. Its been my battle cry for Ions with my Bucs. NO EXCUSES. Other teams plug in the next man up and keep right on winning. Not us..its the pretext we hide behind. I have no love affairs with Koetter or Smitty. Especially Mr. Pressbox Smitty. If they can’t get her done..then its..next coaching staff up. The time is Now. Not in the next 10 years. NOW. WE..Are..Watching…..

  5. Tom Edrington Says:

Didn’t we go through this last year?

  6. Reality-is-a-Beotch Says:

Every year same bs and every year a trip to nfc south basement. Shut up and EARN IT

On paper, the only weakness is some of the DB positions. On paper….

So it’s Time to put it all together! As 813 has been saying, NO EXCUSES!!

Hey Joe is there a reason why the username and email fields get cleared from the comment form on every page now, instead of staying populated like they used to? Seems to have just changed in the last couple days, and it’s like this on all my devices now… just curious.

  11. Steven007 Says:

Unbelievable, great comment. I’m having the same issue.

  12. SCBucsFan Says:

    unbelievable me too

  13. Pickgrin Says:

    unbelievable –

same here. have to put name and email in every time to comment now. Instead of the system remembering me.

    What’s the deal Joe?

  14. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m feeling pretty confident about the team…whough I’m still hesitant to count my chickens before they hatch.

Joe, for some reason my fields when I post are suddenly not staying filled out. I have to fill out for every post. I tried clearing my cookies and cache and it didn’t fix the issue.

Any suggestions on what I can try? It’s only happening on JBF for some reason.

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Ah…sorry, I didn’t read unbelievable’s post first. That’s the issue I am having. Been happening for a day or so, and I’ve been trying all sorts of things.

Happening on my laptop, phone and tablet.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The only thing I can think of is that the website is suddenly preventing cookies.

  17. Owlykat Says:

I don’t think the red zone ineptness is Koetter’s fault. I say that because when Glennon, one of our worst QBs of all time, got down rarely to the red zone he had no problem scoring. Go back and look at the old tapes. So if the red zone ineptness continues this year even with new plays, just pull Jameis down there and give Fitz a shot at it. If that works just bring in Fitz every time we get down there and use Jameis the rest of the time. Jameis got 3500 yards last year despite the bum shoulder, which was our OL’s and Warhop’s Fault, so Koetter is an outstanding play caller. Not the best at time management, or halftime changes, but hopefully Monken can improve those two areas, and he needs to toughen up his scrimaging in pads to prepare his team for this critical season. Smitty on the other hand, has been an effective DC with big DL in Jax, and as long as he Keeps Stevie T. and gives Buckner a fee hand to prepare his DL he should be fine this year. Two years ago he used blitzes effectively and he just needs to do that again and also teach good communication in his backfield and he should have acceptable stats again like or better than he did in the latter part of 2016. Wait and see.

  18. m0j0 Says:

The Bucs are a perfect storm this season. They have a major infusion of talent, both veterans and rookies. They have the foul taste of failure in their mouth from a dismal season, both players and coaches alike, and they have some new position coaches coming in to help turn things around. They have a young QB who may be finally ready to take the next step toward elite status. The coaches all took a hard look at themselves and are ready to throw out what didn’t work and to adapt to the strengths of their players. When it’s all said and done, I think we will see a much better team out there on Sundays, one that we can be proud of.

  19. Lord Cornelius Says:

Credit to 813 for that one. It was #trenchwarfare before the offseason and we accomplished that goal as best as we could.

    I’m all about it.

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

Funny that those that are screaming no excuses are the same ones that gave nothing but excuses when loser lovie was the coach!!!!!!!!! Where was the no excuses then, when they wanted to see a third year of disaster with the incompetent one and joe called his job safe!!!!!

    Way to stay consistent sheep!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. Lamarcus Says:

It’s the Bucs….. They can have excuses for losing. It’s what they do. Come on we started 0-26 to start. Stop acting like we have some kinda rich tradition of winning.

  22. unbelievable Says:

Realist must have a flock of sheep that he talks to everyday.

Cuz there was hardly anyone making excuses for Lovie, especially in year 2. Yet you’ve been making excuses for this team since the end of last season.

    Raise your expectations.

Irma is over with. Hard Knocks is done. This team finally has talent on the D-line. If we get even average play from our o-line, then there are no excuses left. Time to move out of the cellar and make the post season!

  23. 813bucboi Says:

lovie never had 1/2 the talent had in 2016…..lovie couldn’t sniff the talent and depth dirk had last year….those are facts….

you wanted to give dirk a 2year pass for catching a summer cold…..GTFOH!!!!

your skirt is up over your head while you piss in the wind!!!!….pull your skirt down and hold this staff accountable….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

    The Buc Realist

U most have put something a little extra – in your expresso this morning my brotha.

Though I’ve been yelling #NOEXCUSES on this board – for over 2yrs now.

In no way shape or form – did I EVER give Coach Lovie Smith a pass.
    If U recall – I didn’t like the hire and I wanted him fired after 6 games..lol

    So….

I’m not down with belittling a men of good character – the way some on this board do. Lovie Smith has mentored plenty of young players & coaches in this game for a long time

Like Mike Smith, Lovie’s highly respected by his peers both on and off the field.
    True Gentlemen of the game.

Yet both Smith’s, in fact, have fielded some off the worst defenses in Buccaneer history. But there’s a stark difference in comparison – to how some choose to express their opinions of both men.

    Example:

Lovie’s – the inept, incompetent one

    vs.

Mike Smith – is a great guy, class act ….etc, etc.

“lovie never had 1/2 the talent had in 2016…..lovie couldn’t sniff the talent and depth dirk had last year….those are facts….”

Yes, they are the facts, so far as they go.

What you conveniently leave out is that he brought in a ton of free agents, most of which he chose, and he decided most of the picks that year. And yet, he still could not improve the team.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Some people might assume I was a Lovie supporter. I guess, in a way I was. I have supported every coach for the Bucs…anyone here says they haven’t, they are lying or are a horrible fan.

Fans should be supportive of every head coach while he is with the team. Isn’t our real goal to see success? If you withdraw of a coach while still here, then that is the same as saying you want the team to lose so that he’s gone. Heck, in many cases, I have seen some around here say exactly that.

Just curious…how many here that had negative things in the following article still feel the same way after Free Agency, Trades and the Draft?

  28. Bucsfanman Says:

I knew the title would draw the very predictable response from Realist.

Realist aside, all Buc fans are tired of hearing the excuses. It’s been too long with too many losing seasons.
    Enough already! Win some games!

  29. GhostofSciano Says:

    813bucboi coined the #NOEXCUSES phrase…………..

Could it be 813bucboi is a JOE?

  30. OneBucPerson Says:

813 Joe be jacking your trademark XD.

  31. Eric Says:

    They have to play better?

Wow, that is the kind of deep professional insight I have grown to expect from BSPN.

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    bonzai

    they went from 2wins to 6wins….I believe that’s improvement….

and he did it with rookies like Winston, d.smith, marpet kwon, hey jude…..while playing in the toughest division in the nfl…..

licht picked the players but lovie had final say over the roster….sounds like they were doing both together….please find me an article that says lovie choose the FA’s and draft picks while licht just stood in the corner sucking his thumb…..

stick to the facts…..lovie progressed and dirk regressed…..dirk has done less with more and it aint even close….its embarrassing….

we added more talent for the 2017 season and dirk still couldn’t improve the team…..now we’ve added even more talent and depth….will be sink or swim…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Not there yet Says:

Bucs brass know what a championship window looks like and it’s why Dungy got fired. If the team fails this year letter will surely get the axe because it’s not the roster that needs to be updated any longer it would be the coaching staff

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    onebucperson

    you see that sh!t!!!!!…lol….

when TC rolls around, @joe will be saying #PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!

  35. 813bucboi Says:

fans are supportive…..but “real” fans hold coaches accountable!!!!…..some fans know when BS is being shoved in their face….luckily most fans, the media, IRA and joe are tired of it….NO MORE EXCUSES!!!!….simple as that!!!!

  37. SOEbuc Says:

I think they have to be at least 10-6, 9-7 only if they make the playoffs, at the end of the year for Koetter to stay. Licht will stay on cus he had a great draft and FA this offseason. If Koetter does take the walk, Licht needs to spend night and day to find a great HC like so many teams have been doing to turn them around quickly. Honey Badger tweeted Buckner is a “future DC” when he left Arizona. Put him there.

  38. 813bucboi Says:

    SOE

I agree….playoffs or go finishing…..licht should get an extension…..I know he’s in the glazers ear as we type saying, its all on the coaches now….

  39. Duke Says:

    Luvmybucs,

I don’t lovie so I’m not going to offer any personal opinion.

I will tell you that I know several guys who played for Him . Let me just say that the love for and respect that you mentioned is very selective. I will say that the players who aren’t fans of him to a man deeply dislike the man. Guys BTW, that never speak out against anyone seem United in their opinion.

Also, quite few people among the bucs front office personnel were quite put off by how lovie treated them. Arrogant and self important along with dismissive of some to the point of not acknowledging their existence is not an opinion that is exclusive to a select few. Many people share the same experience.

I just think it’s important to note that the way Lovie and Dirk are treated by the Bucs May reflect how each one is respected and liked. It’s not as much the cut and dry impersonal child like notion of fairness that some people try to apply to the situation. But that’s not real life anyway…..So why the persistent attempts to be fair…… I guess simplicity

  40. Destinjohnny Says:

6-10 we have some talent but no offensive line and no elite running back
Then on d we don’t have a secondary

  41. DeeBrooks Says:

Hear that joe no excuses. That means stop being a homer when jw3 starts doing dumb s*** with the ball. Call it like it is if you wanna be taken serious. NO EXCUSES

  42. 2Anglican1609 Says:

They have talent on the defense – no excuses for MS this year. NONE

  43. Buccfan37 Says:

The NFC South is a tough division to climb out of the bottom from, you gotta think early optimism and clearly improved eyeball worthy additions will wave goodbye to the cellar spot. Look out NFL, the Bucs are ready to make some loudly positive noise. Contenders…not pretenders. The fans deserve nothing less.
