More Insight On Buckner

Joe can already tell new Bucs defensive line coach is a fan favorite.

Joe shared observations on Brenston Buckner yesterday and how he was pushing his linemen despite it only being the first rookie minicamp practice, and of course, being underwear football as well.

After practice, Bucs first round pick and defensive tackle Vita Vea was all about Buckner’s in-your-face, brutally honest, vocal ways.

It seems Vea likes that style.

“That’s going to help a lot,” Vea said of Buckner’s direct, politically incorrect ways. “You always need someone like that to push you. You don’t want someone to be your friend out there on the field. You want someone to be there pushing you and [you want to be] tired and getting better every day.

“He told us that we were going to go out there and go straight to work. So, we knew what we were getting into today and he just told us to get up early tomorrow for practice.

“He’s definitely pushing us to our limits and that’s what you need at this level, someone to push you to get better and better every day.”

Joe honestly thinks this may say as much if not more about Vea than it does Buckner. Remember how Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht talked about guys in the draft with “five-star” egos? Doesn’t sound like Vea is that kind of a guy.

It sure sounds like Vea welcomes hard coaching because he wants to raise his game.

This makes Joe smile.

I did not like this pick… ill admit it…. but im starting to love this pick

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Exactly what the Bucs need: for our DLine to become a lean, mean machine. Uhh, maybe we’d better go for just a mean machine. We now have some pretty big DLinemen.

  3. Stanglassman Says:

Political incorrectness is the attitude or policy shown by someone who does not care if they offend or upset any group of people in society who have a disadvantage, or who have been treated differently because of their sex, race, or disability.

  4. Rob Says:

As the immortal Randy Savage repeatedly said… Ohhhhhhhhhh Yeaaaaaaaaaa! Go Bucs

  5. Jim Says:

Nope sorry Stanglassman, that EO or equal opportunity. Saying what’s on your mind regardless of whom you offend is political incorrectness.

  6. BucEmUp Says:

Let’s hope Buckner isn’t hanging out with Sapp on the weekends

  7. Destinjohnny Says:

Funny how hard coaching is politically incorrect….
    Liberals…..

  8. old time buc Says:

Agree with Stan, no room for that at all. Earn your spot or go away. We have needed an in your face coach for a long time. Keep it up Buckner, love it.

  9. BringBucsBack Says:

I can’t be the only one who can’t wait to witness Buckner’s riding of a certain vet DLman. It will be very telling if Gerald will respond as this rookie does to this harsh style or if Buckner approaches vets a little differently.

  10. JWBUCS Says:

Sure sounds like Buckner is the kind of coach a team needs across the defense…

  11. BobBuc Says:

“Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht” said trite-redundant-unimaginative-speaking-in-third-person-Joe.

Really dude – I know it’s your sandbox but you can do better.

  12. teacherman777 Says:

    Awesome!!

    Great hire! Great draft pick!

GMC will get 10 sacks this year!

@db55 – you will remain sackless! You sack of shi%!!

    Go Bucs!

  13. Eric Says:

    “Toes on the line”

Everybody was all jacked up about that too….

  14. Bucamania Says:

I saw Beau Allen and Mitch Unrein hanging out at Steelbach last night. Holy crap is Beau thick. Just a HUGE man. Can’t wait to see this D line this year with Buckner pushing them!

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Where is the Great DC Smitty? Getting his recliner and binoculars ready for the pressbox viewing? He should have his a.s on the field!

  16. Licht’s Out Says:

Smitty The Silver Fox is basically retired…propped up in the press box a la Uncle Bernie from Weekend at Bernie’s. The Dirk appears to be a loyal guy…perhaps to a fault and will live or die career-wise with Mikey.

  17. unbelievable Says:

Liberal here, who loves in-your-face coaching and political incorrectness.

So shove your Fox News preconceived notions up your @$$

  18. Rob Says:

Unbelievable…rather gouge my eyes out with a shrimp fork than sit through 10 seconds of Rachel Maddow. You are clueless

  19. unbelievable Says:

    Who brought up Maddow?

MSNBC is almost as bad as Fox. They are both garbage echo chambers.

Sounds like you are the clueless one.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Almost every picture I see of Vea he’s smiling… this has to be alarming to the McCoy haters because we know if someone is smiling that means they’re terrible. Sure they might be an 3x all-pro and a 6x pro bowler, but the McCoy haters know that he’s actually terrible, which is easy to see because he smiles. Grrrr, just thinking about this is making me so angry, how dare people smile, and now McCoy is already ruining Vita by showing him how to smile… ggggrrrrrr…..

  21. Reality_43 Says:

I honestly think Buckner will end up being a defensive coordinator somewhere and I honestly hope it is with us. If this defense does turn things around, Mike Smith might get the praise, but Buckner will be the driving force.

Hopefully Mike Smith gets a Head Coaching gig again.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Reality_43 – Bucker was the defensive line coach in Arizona for 5 years and then was fired and got the same job with the Bucs. That doesn’t tell me he’s on the upswing at the moment. If he can get do a good job with the Bucs then perhaps he’ll move up the ladder, but I have no idea what the guy knows about defense that would make him a coordinator. Key word: I don’t know, not saying it’s not there, I just don’t know what you base the opinion on that he’s a future coordinator when his career seems to be stagnant right now. That’s not bashing him or wanting him not to move up the ladder, but just giving a realistic take based off what we currently know.

  23. Dave Says:

    To Rob Munch
Why don’t you look at facts first.
Head coach retired. All Ariens coaches released. New head coach brought in his buddies.
Not exactly fired as you describe.

  24. Dave Says:

Rob you are a self righteous clueless bigot but you are free to have your beliefs

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Dave – LOL! What are you getting triggered about cupcake? If the guy was such a surefire future HOF coach then he wouldn’t have got fired. Also, yes, when you work for someone and they say they don’t want you anymore, that is getting fired. He might be a great coach, and I hope he is, but 5 years at the same job and then the place you work telling you they don’t want you anymore, that isn’t someone on a surefire upward trajectory.

  26. Capt.Tim Says:

Rod- lol, yeah, Vea is a big happy guy. Cant possibly be any good.
I hope he doesnt like Ice cream! These brain surgeons will want to cut him before camp!!!

They like like Buckner, because he sounds mean- grrrr
The two stupidest coaches in this teams miserable history were “mean”

The idiotic Ray Perkins- who list his starting Right tackle – because Ray slapped him. Seems ole dumbass Ray misunderstood something the guy said- and slapped him. Guy demanded a trade

And the Moronic Greg Schiano. Meybe the stupidest coach in NFL history. Worried about AC temps and lunch menus. Yet ran an offense that would be primative for a high school team. Opposing players actually would stand on the side line and laugh at our play calling. Greg the dregs was most famous for attacking the “ victory” formation kneel down.

Same guys who cry for mean coaches and mean players- are the same guys who love Gruden. Gruden, who was such an butt kisser and smoozer, that he lost the players due to his two faced handling of them.

Football, despite what coach warriors think, isnt war. Its a game. 90% of the players are friends. They are young millionaires, who train and vacation together.
Vea will be be a good Nose tackle for us.
And a happy Ice Cream eater- A LOT of ice cream

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

    Couch Warriors*

  28. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

I am starting to remember why I didn’t care to read the comments before, and would only read the articles, lol.

Good thing we all root for the same team. — I have seen Eagles and Steelers fans get along better.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

If Smitty misses again this year he will be sent on his way. Buckner for DC if that happens. So many players loved this guy as there coach and apparently he’s a true hard ass.

  30. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

    @SOEbuc

No doubt man, I really love what Buckner seems to bring to the table. He is going to be great for this team.
