Jameis Wouldn’t Agree That He Tries Too Hard

May 26th, 2018

America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, dug his heels in this week.

Asked twice whether he agreed with offensive coordinator Todd Monken’s assertion that he tries too hard at times, Jameis would not say yes.

The second time Jameis was asked, he fired back and concluded with a nugget that maybe reveals Jameis thinks he does push it beyond acceptable limits once in a while.

“I think when you want to win as bad as I want to win, you’re going to do whatever it takes. You know, obviously it’s a happy medium between there. I mean, I enjoy winning. That’s one thing that we all have to love around here is winning so much that all the other stuff doesn’t even matter. That’s just me. That’s just me. Obviously, like I said, I got to continue to improve, continue to get better and and sometimes let the game come to me.”

The Bucs certainly are walking a fine line with Jameis. They love him for who he is, the frantic win-at-all-costs quarterback who is super eager to serve and please his teammates. But they also want to refine all that and sort of put him in a box.

That’s a very, very fine line.

An interesting example was Jameis’ game-winning bomb to Chris Godwin to beat the Saints. It was a throw Bucs coaches absolutely didn’t want Jameis to make. They were looking for him to take the safe throw underneath — which was open — so they could kick a game-winning field goal.

Joe asked QB coach Mike Bajakian what that one play taught him about Jameis, or how it was enlightening in any way.

“It didn’t change the broader look I have of him at all. Again, I have a lot of confidence in his ability, in his decision making ability, too. You know, he’s going to aggressive. He took the chance and it paid off,” Bajakian said.

“Coach Koetter has a phrase, you know we talk a lot about progressions and work the boundary versus this look, versus the field, you know, you got free access [and] all those different things. And then you have kind of a caveat that says, ‘Alright, that throw’s a “be-right.”‘ In other words, if you’re going to make it, you better be right. And he was. So good decision by him.”

Joe is all good with Jameis.

If he just cuts the fumbles in half and figures out how to start games better, he’ll quickly move into the ranks of the better NFC quarterbacks, maybe even land in the top-6.

Oh Jameis……..how many deep balls / passes will you miss this season????

…….what excuses will all these Jameis lovers say when he starts sucking it up again..

I can just see the comments from Jameis defenders six months from now when the bucs have another subpar season…..and of course they’ll blame everyone on the offense except for their Godsend Jameis…

    I can just see it…….

  2. Alanbucsfan Says:

Ryan Jensen, Ronald Jones and Chris Godwin in the starting lineup should help Jameis start games better

  3. Pickgrin Says:

    Gotta let Jameis be Jameis

    I can just see it…….

BucsAnthem having nothing whatsoever to say next season because Winston is kicking ass.

  4. BucFamous Says:

Hahaha, maybe BucsAnthem needs to go back and read the article on Jameis’ accuracy again. Some people LOL

  5. Pat Says:

Tom Brady is most definitely a win at all cost QB who hates to lose. This is why Brady will take a sack or throw the ball away. Winston needs to do this type of thing and thus far he hasn’t. It hurts the team. Wanting to win and hating to lose have nothing to do with making dumb decisions as a QB in the NFL.

  6. DE Bucs Fan Says:

I think this is Jameis’ year. For the anti-Jameis crowd; if Jameis isn’t the answer, who is? Who is your solution?

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It looks like (looks like) Jameis will have the running game he needs……and it definitely looks like (looks like) the defense will be much improved.

Those two things is what any QB needs to be a winner.

  8. Horse Liver Says:

The last pass to Godwin was simply due to Jameis being more sick of seeing hack kickers miss field goals that cost his team three or four wins, he didn’t want to see that again.

  9. ben Says:

Mr. Winston sucked in the red zone and has no accuracy with the long ball . With all the weapons he should be great but NOT as yet.Calling him America’s qb when most of nfl would laugh seems disrespectful to ftball fans. This year he should NOT be average and stop with the excuses with all the talent given him on the field.

  10. Lamarcus Says:

These coaches can’t match his drive for winning.

  11. Kobe Faker Says:

LOL! so this is the mental game that our klueless coaches will teach our franchise QB?

They are going to mindfv*k JW3 mental game

When the Oline was breaking down and the shoulder was injured, Klueless kept on throwing the deep time consuming patterns on 2nd/3rd and long

the top offensive coordinators would have devised a short get the ball out passing attack to help JW3 and the leaking Oline

Klueless scheme and playcalls has no short passing design…it is ancient and irrelevant in this modern game.

    i will ask you sheep

who else has this deep time consuming offense? NO ONE…It will get the QBs killed

Both Klueless and recievers coach Monken has 1 year left as coaches not only in Tampa Bay but in the NFL

    Kobe Faker

  12. Dooshlarue Says:

“Like I said, I just have to get better”………
Blah, blah, blah……… been hearing this for awhile.
    Starting to sound like GMC.

I’m pulling for you JW, but STFU, calm down, focus and win games this year.

  13. Cgmaster27 Says:

Bucs anthem with the same regurgitated crap. We all know when Jameis lights it up,you and the rest of the trolls will be invisible. Some fans are beyond clueless and anthem is one of them.

  14. Clw JB Says:

I think this is JW break out season – he has all the tools on O now – a little weak on the right side of the line but outside that the O is loaded

Now with D that he can have some confidence in and maybe he doesn’t feel compelled to try and make miracles happen every week

Natural maturity process and a much improved D means a much better QB should appear this season

    I certainly hope so

  15. ShutTheBucUp Says:

LaMarcus is right. The coaches cannot match Jameis’ drive to win. Good thing Koetter will be taking all of these clowns with him after he gets sacked on black Monday. The QB coach is a joke.

  16. Eric Says:

Anthem, for the exception of these message boards most of Tampa and surely the rest of the country share the same beliefs on #3.
You have to remember this is very pro FSU Bucs site. Most intelligent football fans such as Football guru and curator of Pro football talk share the same sentiments.
Unfortunately objectivity is not a quality most Semenholes possess. They are more like disciples than fans. Branch davidian like weirdos who dont see things as most humans with a brain bigger than a peanut would..

  17. AlteredEgo Says:

    If Jameis plays like
Brad Johnson…everything will fall in place for him

    LOL……..funny post.

Yeah…….I know the bucs blind lemmings on this site would defend Jameis to the end of time…..especially the Noles fans who are the worse….

These Jameis defenders are the same ones who sput GMC is greatetst DT in the game yet hasn’t raised up the Bucs to anything

It’s Ok……..I’m always a realist……I won’t turn a blind eye to certain players on this team just because the media or the sports pundits say how great they are or could be.

Listen, if these guys were working regular or were subpar or sucking consistently….they won’t be employed for long……..So then why should anyone give these pampered spoiled athletes a pass because I sure as hell don’t.

  20. OneBuc55 Says:

    T.O. voice “That’s my Quarterback”…

Love him or Hate him, JW’s passion and talent can never be questioned…Is he perfect? No, of course not; but the good definitely out weighs the bad and good luck finding a 24 year old QB in NFL history that’s put up better numbers…I personally love his Die Hard mentality; that being said he needs to undestand when to let the play die and move on to the next one…

The comments he said at the end of interview summed it all up “I got to continue to improve, continue to get better and sometimes let the game come to me.”

  21. Defense Rules Says:

It’s not about Jameis’ passion for the game; that’s a given. It’s about harnessing his talent on the field.

Steve Young was a great example. Spent 2 yrs with the Bucs … went 3 wins, 16 losses in the 19 games he played here. He was terrible … 53% completion, 11 TDs, 21 INTs and 68 sacks (that’s right: 68 sacks in 19 games).

Traded to the 49ers, coached at that time by some guy named Bill Walsh (QB coach was some guy named Mike Holmgren). First FOUR yrs, Young played in only 35 games, behind some guy named Joe Montana (sounds like Aaron Rogers story). But in those 4 yrs, Steve went 7 wins, 4 losses throwing 60% completions (having Jerry Rice might’ve helped), with 23 TDs, 6 INTs and only 36 sacks (amazing what a good OLine will do for a QB).

Once Young took over as starting QB for the 49ers, all he did was win … 84 wins and 29 losses in 9 yrs. The rest is history, including the Hall of Fame of course.

Unlike Steve Young, Jameis has been ‘learning on the job’ as a starter from Day 1. With an improved running game, hopefully improved OLine and a better defense, there’s no reason why he can’t take a giant leap forward this year. The only one standing in Jameis’ way is himself.

  22. NFLNut Says:

Josh Freeman just retired after struggling in a CFL camp

  23. Ndog Says:

I just wonder why so many “fans” like Anthem hate our teams QB and openly root against him? Maybe this why our stadium experience sucks cause we have a bunch of jackwagons as fans.

  24. Ndog Says:

Just keep the list fellas so it’s Eric, Anthem, ben.

  25. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

Is “trying to hard” really coach speak for being reckless? For as much as our defense was to blame Jameis did put them in some pretty bad situations at times. When your defense spends more time on the field than your offense then your usually gonna lose. Regardless of what Jameis thinks about his abilities he needs to come to the realization that his recklessness is hard to overcome. Get rid of the ball.

  26. Kobe Faker Says:

    @defense r

Its the west coast offense. get the ball out fast before your QB is pummeled

the west coast offense was bogged down in the 90s but with the new rules and penalties against the defense…the hybrid west coast offense is the new modern NFL

    2019 offense will be …

THE EXACT SAME AS THE LAST 2 YEARS….

JW3 will not develop under Klueless and this old dead offensive scheme

defensive coordinators especially in our division can read Klueless like a book

    Kluless playcalling boggs himself down

  27. Chefy Says:

@kobe faker… you are 100% right. Most of the problem seems to stem from the terrible play calling I saw last year. Is there anyone else in the world that didn’t know the ball was going to Charles Simms on 3rd down when he came into the game? I remember an article from a source on ESPN that had defensive coordinators rank the toughest offenses to figure out and most of them said Tampa was the easiest. Run up the middle on first down for a loss, throw a 40 yard bomb on second to DeSean Jackson, then throw for an 8 yard pass on third and 10. Did anyone actually see a bubble screen or WR screen last year. Get creative for goodness sakes

  28. Duke Says:

    Kobe,

What is the prerequisite skills required to operate the west coast offense?

Just wondering how is it possible that JW has thrown for so many yards. It’s not middle of road numbers they’re record setting. If the offense is so predictable stopping it should be easy…..but it seems the most effective way to stop klueless is the red zone not predictably. I can’t explain the discrepancy between facts and your exalted and professionally elite proclamations of antiquation. I’m calling Kobe and Kobe maybe the other one is the bright light.

  29. stpetebucsfan Says:

D.R. Great take and comparison to Young. I thought Jameis would blossom this past year…hurricanes…arm injuries…NO running game…NO defense really didn’t provide us with a look at Jameis true development. It was very frustrating for all of us and I suspect for Jameis most of all.

Last year we got a great start on #weaponsforJameis. DJAX…OJ…Godwin to go with ME13…Brate and Hump…we have some guys like Bobo who I believe can also play in the league. I so not believe any QB in the league right now has a deeper selection of targets and if ROJO can catch out of the backfield there’s another target…we’ve fixed the DL and improved the OL.

Jameis blows up this year!!! It’s a year later than I expected but better late than never.

  30. Kobe Faker Says:

    @Duke

Kobe is from Lakeland and live in a trailer park (double wide)

thats too many fancy words for me to understand…

    all I understood was “Klueless”

We have 2 very good Yac recievers in OJ and Godwin. slants and crosses to

    SETUP THE DEEP PASSING ATTACK

we have to work inside out

have the defense respect/fear the short passing attack and then go long

yards with the short passing scheme? Drew Brees has gained over 5k yards 5 times and will breal the alltime yardage/etc records this year

im not even going to get to the the uptempo system that JW3 is also great at…

next year with the new regime, JW3 will start to take his steps to a HOF career

  31. Defense Rules Says:

@Chefy … “Run up the middle on first down for a loss, throw a 40 yard bomb on second to DeSean Jackson, then throw for an 8 yard pass on third and 10.” If that were the case, Bucs would’ve been last in the league in making 1st downs … instead of 2nd in the NFL last year (behind the Patriots). Bucs were also 12th in 3rd down conversions, which isn’t great but not that shabby either.

StPete, I think Jameis will blossom this year too, but not solely because of his own efforts. If this OLine can do a better job of protecting him, Jameis can pick just about any defense apart with the weapons that we have. Rojo will be a big player IMO, but I hope folks aren’t sleeping on Barber or Sims (they both can be very valuable role-players in this offense). The biggest improvement though I think will come from Todd Monken … IF (and that’s a big IF) Koetter allows him to play a much bigger role in play design & ultimately play-calling. Dirk has to learn to be more of a HC, and less of an OC. If not, he’ll be looking for a job this time next year.

  32. Tony from L.A. Says:

    Good for, Jameis.

Don’t let the loser mentality of playing not to lose seep in.
Playing it safe gets you nowhere in life.

The negative piling on against the talented Bucs continues.

  33. Bob in Valrico Says:

    Kobe
There is lot of evidence that Jameis is 15 -25 yard guy. He threw at 70% percent clip last year between 20 and 25 yards and over 60% a beteen 15 -20 yards.
His short passes worry me sometimes. Last year he threw a short pass that DJAX had to take away from a defender . Also seen passes thrown behind receivers. Can’t say for sure if he was trying to hit the receiver or throwing it away.
AT any rate Jameis doesn’t have the quick release or Knowledge of the game
that Breez has yet, so I don’t look for that to happen anytime soon.

  34. Blue-footed booby Says:

Kobe Faker if the Bucs go on to another losing season in 2018 and a new regime comes next year, Jameis Winston will be on his way out of Tampa in favor of either a new drafted QB or a veteran upgrade like Nick Foles.

Why? Well, here’s what going to happen in this scenario when the Glazer boys are interviewing potential GM and coaches, those GMs and coaches are going to straight up say they want their guy at the most consequential position in the league instead of an emotional hothead who has a long windup and terrible deep pass accuracy in his final year of his contract.

Yep, folks here can choose to ignore TheBucsAnthem but boy are those people in for a rude awakening come spring 2019 …

  35. JimmyJack Says:

Dirk needs to use Winstons legs this year. This shouldnt even need to be said.

Dirks offense has been a total disaster. We handed the guy a top 5 offense. We handed him plenty of draft talent. We handed him a $10,000,000 weapon.

Dirk has squandered everything we have given him. He is a very lucky man to still have a job. The only reason he is still here is because of the teams bad string of hire/fires. They did not want to tear down everything they built.

A real coach would have this offense leading the team and putting up points. Not entering meltdown mode by halftime looking up at 3 useless points.

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

    D.R.

Yeah I hope Dirk sees the light and gives Moncken the play calling duties. It’s just such an improvement on time management and resources.

Sadly I think Dirk’s year last season left him feeling he still has a lot to prove and may wish to call his own plays until this turns around or he gets fired.

I like Dirk but again I’d rather see Moncken. If Moncken blows the pooch DK could always start calling them again.

  37. DeeBrooks Says:

Pretty convienant that your critique left out ALL OF HIS F****** INTS . It ain’t just fumbles and slow starts. Top 6?!?. Yeah right,

  38. BucRealist Says:

As I have said many times Winston won’t progress. Why you ask? This is why. This is what’s at the heart of his loosing record. Poor decisions and he basically said yes I’m gonna keep making them because winning is all I’m obsessed with. Great qb but look for his turnovers to continue to get worse
