OTA Practice Notes

May 31st, 2018

Sled work at Bucs OTA practice today.

Notes from this morning’s OTA underwear football practice. No rain, no indoor practice facility. Still fairly warm.

* The Bucs have zebras at practice today.

* Ryan Fitzpatrick with a bullet to Bobo Wilson along the right sideline. The second-year wide receiver is getting rave reviews from Bucs coach Dirk Koetter for his offseason work.

* In what Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher would call “good on good,” or No. 1 offense on the No. 1 defense, the Bucs offense is in a two-minute drill where, with time running out, Koetter barks for the field goal team to get on the field to try a kick before the playclock expires. Let’s hope Koetter tries for seven points more this fall and less settling for field goals.

* Bobo catches a bomb over the middle.

* Jacquizz Rodgers with a run up the middle. In underwear football, there can be no more of a worthless play.

* During defensive line drills, hitting the blocking sleds, Gerald McCoy hollers, ” Hit it Vita! Give [the reporters watching] something to write about.”

* You know it is underwear football when Ryan Smith breaks up a pass from America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

* Ronald Jones does some serious gymnastics moves to avoid contact in a play in the left flat.

* Rodgers with an acrobatic catch in the left flat from Fitzpatrick.

* Anthony Auclair was going to be carted off with an unknown injury but instead walked into building.

* DeSean Jackson tickles the left sideline on a pass from Jameis.

* Mike Evans is on his back along the left sideline being attended to by a trainer. He was very slow in getting up and was slouched over for a period of time. In two separate visits, he had DJax and Jameis walk up to him and spend time with him. Evans watched practice for a few plays with his helmet off but later resumed drills. He added a catch from Jameis before the afternoon was finished.

* Jameis hits Adam Humphries on a long pass over the middle with Vernon Hargreaves in coverage.

* Cam Brate with a beautiful over the shoulder catch from Fitzpatrick down the middle.

* Javian Elliott picks off Fitz.

* Jameis’ day is starting to turn ugly and Kwon Alexander is a big reason. He first jumps a route on Jameis in the left flat and houses it for six. A couple of plays later, Kwon again jumps and route but couldn’t come up with Jameis’ pass. Better to get those ugly passes out of the way in May than September.

* Rodgers runs around left end for a big gain.

* Jameis’ rough afternoon continues. He tries to hit O.J. Howard over the middle but Lavonte David breaks it up and Hargreaves dives and nearly comes up with a pick. Hargreaves was slow to get up and it was obvious he didn’t feel 100 percent because he didn’t perform his signature incomplete pass/referee stunt he is best known for, even in practice.

* Jameis throws deep down the right sideline for DJax and it is too long. Ryan Smith and Justin Evans were in coverage.

* Charles Sims gets a massive hole and runs for a big gain up the middle. Again, underwear football.

* For the final 10 minutes of practice, Koetter has the entire team running gassers.

Jameis is in mid-season form with those Pick-6s

  2. Pickgrin Says:

Thanks for the practice observations Joe! Good stuff as always.

Hopefully we can come out of OTAs without any major injuries. Sounds like there were a few tense moments out there today in that regard.

    practice how you play!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  4. John meeks Says:

Looks like bobo came in this year ready to make some noise,we are gonna be deep at receiver and that is very good to say!

  5. Rick Says:

    Thank you Joe !

  6. BucFanFromOH Says:

Keep up the great work Joe!

  7. superslacker Says:

I hope the Jameis’ picks are the result of better defensive play. If he’s the guy we all want him to be, he should be shredding the defense in the offseason. Will we be looking to draft a new QB next year?

  8. m0j0 Says:

Jamies needs to remember to take what the defense gives him, not give the defense takeaways…

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

How is the non-development of our Dbacks going, Joe?

  10. Lamarcus Says:

Hope Koetter won’t believe he has great defense this time around fools gold

  11. gbobucsfan Says:

As Joe said, it’s underwear football, the D is keying in on Pass first. They don’t care about the run game because they can’t make contact but an INT will make the front page.

    Not worried……yet

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

Keeping my eye on WR Justin Watson #5 and #6 wr’s should be interesting.

  13. theodore Says:

    Godwin?

  14. blind melon Says:

This says alot – “…* For the final 10 minutes of practice, Koetter has the entire team running gassers..”

  15. stpetebucsfan Says:

Wow when it rains it pours. Remember our drought at WR? We began to fix it with ME13. Then it became #weaponsforJameis…we added DJAX…Godwin..OJ and Brate at TE and then Hump.

That’s a crowd and I believe Bobo is ready to break out this year. I think Bobo will make a solid #2 receiver somewhere…unless he stays here as a 3 or 4 and that may even have to wait until next year unless somebody gets traded.

Now if we could get that same wonderful problem at some other positions we’d be in tall cotton. LB is not far behind

  16. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Joe

Thanks as always for the excellent coverage from the OTA’s. From the pics it looked pretty hot out there today.

Did they close OTA’s last year with gassers or is DK changing things up?

Any different feel or vibe from last year.

  17. Defense Rules Says:

Blind melon, you were thinking exactly the same thing I was. I’m really hoping that Dirk has learned that soft training camps lead to soft teams come Sept.

  18. DanBucsFan Says:

Love hearing about the gasers at practice for the last 10 mins. Hard nosed, we sweat together, we bleed together, we fight together. Go Bucs ! Thanks (Joe) for the great updates, even in underware season.

  19. Bucsfan951 Says:

Sweet! Last year it was fumbles. This year its ints 😒

  20. DanBucsFan Says:

Love the gasers. NEW ATTITUDES. We sweat together, we fight together. Thx Joe !

  21. Bird Says:

    Thanks Joe’s!

  22. Joe Says:

Did they close OTA’s last year with gassers or is DK changing things up?

Last 10 minutes of practice, gassers for the entire team.

  23. Joe Says:

Thanks for the kind words guys. Will be back out there next Thursday.

Will add that neither Brent Grimes nor JPP were out there today. Koetter said JPP was in the building this week. Grimes practiced Tuesday and Wednesday.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

any barber notes?…..is he catching the ball pretty well?….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  25. BIrd Says:

Appears there were 4 ints. Including 2 pick sixes

However, Hargreaves dropped a potential 5

They said it hit his weed smoking hand 1st

  26. DB55 Says:

Since we’re so deep at receiver we should make a trade for a power back. Thunder and lightning if you will.

  27. stpetebucsfan Says:

    DB55

Certainly take your point but does that mean you’ve given up on Barber as a power back?

I’m willing to see how he produces this year. His career average is right at 4 YPC.
Nothing great but if he improves just a bit he might be solid complementary back for ROJO.

If we’re going to pick up one more stud I hope it’s an RG or RT or even both. Our OL is getting very close to being at least top ten.

  28. Joe Says:

Don’t recall seeing an OTA last year end with a round of gassers.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

JPP has been hearing about the last 10 minute sprints and doesn’t show up.

  30. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    Happy to see “notes’ back!!!

Either Jameis is still the same Jameis or Kwon is just getting better…

  31. RustyRhinos Says:

What happened with TE Auclair? Did he come back to her field, floppy hat patrol? Was he limping?

  32. uckinator Says:

Trade Djax for an good veteran OL. Don’t need him anymore. have to eat part of his salary, but that should upgrade our line in a big way !

  33. mark2001 Says:

Getting those picks out of his system in May rather than Sept.? I sure hope so, or it will be a long in disappointment, short in 16 games year.

  34. Owlykat Says:

Great coverage, Joe! Thanks so much. Hope Auclair is OK since he has the same skills as Howard, just a bit slower. Koetter needs to play some two TE sets this year with Auclair and Howard. The Defense would not know to expect a pass or run. Using Auclair and Howard both blocking downfield we should get a lot of long runs for TDs out of Jones. That would help up our TDs even if we still struggle some in the red zone. Then have both run slants toward each other and pick some CBs and be open then the other TE blocks for the other which should give us great YAC stats too and overpower their smaller DBs and Safeties. Brate is a great pass receiver but when he teams with Howard the defense knows it is a pass! Koetter has time this year to design craftier plays and formations! Go Bucs!
