The Recruiter

April 5th, 2018

Salesman.

During the offseason when the Bucs decided to have a total makeover of their defensive line, with the exception of Gerald McCoy, the powers that be at One Buc Palace had their eyes on Beau Allen as a target.

What Bucs coach Dirk Koetter didn’t know was that Allen was also going to be a recruiter for the Bucs.

Allen, of course, was with the Super Bowl-winning Eagles. And about the same time that the Bucs brought Allen in as a new member of the team, Allen’s close friend with the Eagles, fellow defensive lineman Vinny Curry, was released.

And it was Allen that told Koetter, if you want Curry, he can help deliver him. This is what Koetter explained at the recent coaches breakfast at the NFL owners meetings in Orlando.

“We had targeted Beau Allen,” Koetter explained. “We had targeted him as a nose tackle to play next to Gerald [McCoy]. When Beau was in on his visit, he told me he could help us [recruit] Vinny Curry. And that was like a day after Vinny had been released.

“It was so early in the process. Beau was selling Vinny right off the bat. Then after you meet Vinny and meet Beau spend some time with those guys you realize they are close.”

Joe thought this was pretty cool. There is no information if Allen got a commission for luring Curry to the Bucs.

But imagine that, a player who wants to play for the Bucs so much — and win with the Bucs — he’s willing to act as an agent of sorts to recruit other players.

Big Uglies ! The more of them, the better !

Neat story Joe. Of course I keep thinking that Jason Licht was the one who got credit for both of them in earlier articles that I’ve read. Another way of saying I guess that fans don’t give enough credit to the relationships that exist between various NFL players? For example, I could easily believe that Jameis is a pretty good recruiter too.

Wow Joe awesome article. Loving these D-Line additions in FA this year!

  9. Walktheplank Says:

We need more tough gritty players who live to play hard and have each other back. Good news for the d-line.

This is the real culture change. Keep bringing in players that want to win and having them recommend other players that want to win.

They will see on this team soon enough who wants to win and who’s mailing it in.

Get enough of these types of “want to win” players, and accountability will be held in the locker room….and not wait until the last game to do it.

    If bradley Chubb falls….
Seems weird to say this but we would have a badass front 7
    We would have depth….
Wow that’s crazy to even think

I thought nobody wanted to play for the lowly Bucs……the disgraceful, putrid, laughing stock, losing culture, Cleveland South with Cancer93…….(remembering Tmax RIP)

TBBF- DT in charge of personnel, GMC?!
I haven’t decided yet if I miss that guy or not. If you’re out there tmax, hang in there I asked GMC to send you a care package! 🙂

    Vita Vea aint happening.

Beau, which means “handsome” in French, would feel betrayed like Mike Glennon.

I love how Dirk realizes what he’s saying and then quickly covers himself by saying “it was a day after Curry was cut”…

Allen did his news conference with the Bucs on March 15.
Curry was cut on March 16.

Why does the team let Dirk talk to the media?

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Licht’s record of signing veteran defensive lineman says that all these FA signings will be busts. Trading for JPP I think is the only move that mattered, that these guys like Curry, who is a lot like Ayers, Licht’s history says bust, bust and bust.

  19. Pickgrin Says:

Good deal. Hope these guys can make a difference up front.

    Thanks guys!

At a secluded location somewhere in Tampa, The underground Gerald McCoy Fan Club meeting is called to order….

    Roll Taker : Tmaxcon

    TMaxcon : Present

    Roll Taker: DB55

    DB55 : Present

Meeting called to order: It is the mission of this organization to remain silent our unwavering appreciation and love of all things Number 93 Gerald McCoy.

Members what activities have you done to conceal your love of GMC?

Tmaxcon : I go on various Buc fan websites and call him Cancer 93

DB55 : I too visit fan websites and I refer to him as soft and ice cream man.

Very well done my brethren, we must not allow the world to know our deep tooted love of all things number 93, the six time pro bowl, all around superstar, defensive phenom, Gerald McCoy.

    Meeting adjourned.

Wow and only 1 somewhat negative post. What a breath of fresh air. And thanks Joe. Those are the types of conversation starters this forum needs. It’s time to start getting excited about the upcoming draft fellas. We are gonna get a Bad Ass couple players.

And just to add my recent thoughts about potential trade downs, I really don’t see Buffalo moving to our spot last minute simply because NO team between 6 and 10 will touch a QB. All Buffalo has to do is jump Miami. Unless they blow their wad too soon and panic

And it’s way too risky to move to 7 now. Our better bet would be a team wanting James or Fitzpatrick etc. If we were top 5, I would be excited about extra picks, but at 7 I feel the chatter is simply an attempt at generating hype. I really feel we will take Nelson or Ward, then Sony or Chubb and move on.

Sucks, but I think it’s closer to reality than I would prefer.

Joe, we need a like button in here. GhostofShiano would have plenty for his last comment!

  25. FortMyersDave Says:

Nice to see some positivity, seems like the trolls have gone underground but perhaps something else is afoot. Maybe some of the more negative posters have decided to move onto an easier target, some low hanging fruit like our beloved Tampa rays who just blew a 2-0 lead in the 9th with their closer in (who manager/robot Cash had not used in a week) and promptly blew the lead and the game, 3-2 in 12 to drop to a putrid 1-6. Certain posters could really have a ball on a Rays board teeing up Cash for being a moron, players not even giving 75%, the ownership for trying to cut payroll to less than even the Marlins or A’s and the plausible conspiracy theory that Stu Sternberg is deliberately sabotaging the team so that he can move it to greener pastures outside of the Bay area as either he does not believe the boys in Ybor can get a park built or he does not want to help play for half of it…. anyway you cut it, it looks like the rays could be gunning for 110 losses this season which is pathetic…….
