Running Jameis?

April 8th, 2018

“Look out Aaron!”

When America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, was a rookie, he wasn’t afraid to run the ball.

Who can ever forget his key run on 3rd-and-19 late in the game against the Dixie Chicks at home that Jameis picked up to keep a drive alive and win the game?

Man, that was clutch!

If nothing else, folks should remember that play for how loafing Atlanta defensive end Adrian Clayborn quit twice. You know, he has a motor?

Since, it seems Jameis has run less and less. Is that an edict from Bucs coach Dirk Koetter? Is that just Jameis wanting to hang in the pocket too long? Answers to those questions remain cloudy.

Multimedia maven Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com suggests Bucs fans may see Jameis run more this season. Why? Because the NFL is a copycat league and now folks will want to do what the Eagles did on their way to a Super Bowl win over the Belicheats.

Winston isn’t one of the league’s swifter quarterbacks, but that may not be necessary for the Bucs to take advantage of the RPO approach to some extent. It sounds as if, at the very least, Tampa Bay’s coaching staff will have it as an option in their playbook in 2018.

Now Joe knows that Koetter likes to compare Jameis to Aaron Rodgers. When Joe first heard this Joe thought Koetter was off his rocker. Brett Favre? Yeah, Joe can see him in Jamies. But Rodgers?

However, numbers support Koetter is dead-on. When Jameis moves outside the pocket to throw, he’s right there if not better than Rodgers. Yeah, seriously.

Joe wondered why, if Koetter believes Jameis is close to Rodgers and the numbers backed him up, why Koetter didn’t incorporate more of Jameis throwing on the run outside the pocket like Rodgers does?

Perhaps we will see that this fall?

Hopefully Jameis will be able to step up into “a” pocket and deliver timing passes this year

    Answer
    The Tackles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe also ask, that a running back should run, and pass protection is not important, and DM22 should have been benched!!!!!!

    answer
Which running back was in pass-pro when JW3 got slammed to the ground and injured ruining the season!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. BigHogHaynes Says:

We can always kick players when they come up short…always…Clayborn is with another team who thinks his motor is just fine …J W throwing on the run is ok but running for his life, scrambling, not so much! It Bly takes one linebacker to fail in and BAM four weeks on the sidelines!

  4. Pickgrin Says:

Free Jameis! Especially inside the 5 yard line.

And for God’s sake – call for the 6’4″ 230 lb QB to fall forward for a 1st down every once in a while on 3rd/4th and 1.

  5. AlteredEgo Says:

Pick…maybe it was because of Jameis’s shoulder injury they/he did go for the short yardage conversions…

  6. BucEmUp Says:

Yep, the second best qb in the league when on the move and throwing the ball outside the pocket. They didn’t do that and didn’t throw the ball to the rbs. Both what helped the offense be better in 2015. Koetter has become a little too conservative for my liking in his first two years as head coach. He either needs to appoint someone tholepin him with head coaching duties so he can concentrate more on the offense during the games or he needs to hand over play calling duties.

But none of this matters with the leagues worst DC backing them up

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

    @pickgrin

While that is funny to say, the go aggressive would simply not work!!!!!! You are asking your injured QB to fall forward as Sweezy and Pamphile/evans are losing ground???????

Maybe they will be able to get a push and do that this year, but last year, not so much!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. Ocala Says:

    Pickgrin:

    Amen to that.
Use Jameis on goal line plays

  9. NFLNut Says:

“Scrambling to throw Jameis” would be nice, but I do NOT want to see “running Jameis” … running QB’s don’t last.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

First of all…..Jameis rarely looks to run….he runs as a last resort….even with clear running room…you’ll see him toss a short pass to an open receiver…..

Jameis can run and should…..I don’t understand why we never call a sneak for him….he’s pretty big, powerful and athletic….(maybe it’s ball security)….but I’d trust him on 3rd or 4th and 1 over any of our backs.

Remember how we ruined Josh Freeman……taking away his run took away a viable option for him and I think it screwed him up.

Jameis got hurt….running and blindsided by a sack…..he can get hurt many different ways….he needs to run with the situation calls for it. Don’t be fearful for him because he won’t be for himself.

  11. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tampabaybucfan

taking away the run “ruined Jfro” was because he could not read defenses, and had a learning disability , and had trouble remembering more than 3 plays!!!!!!!!!!

as far as not calling “sneaks” watch the guard play and you will have your answer!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!

  12. Pickgrin Says:

Maybe if we get Nelson and have the best interior OLine in the league – coach will call a QB sneak on 3rd/4th and short a time or 2 this year. (eye roll)

It wasn’t just last year guys. I can literally think of 2, maybe 3 plays in Winston’s entire career that were “called runs” for the QB.

Winston is not “fast” by NFL standards – but he has always been an exceptional “runner” when the situation calls for it and/or the opportunity presents itself.

Especially inside the 5 yard line in the red zone – I want to see Winston run more. Because I know a # of those runs will lead to TDs!

  13. AlteredEgo Says:

Flash back to Vinny…the first game after Perkins was fired Vinny was free to run he busted off a 50 yarder against the Viking in the Ole Sombrero..sweet !

  14. Bobby M. Says:

Lets be clear…..coaches dont take away a QBs ability to run, its not like we were calling option reads and suddenly removed them from the play calling. The reality is simple….young QBs test the waters and do run….until they get lit up by a LB that’s 40 lbs heavier and running a 4.5 or even 4.4 forty. Then they realize that this is the NFL….and if they want to stay in the NFL for a 2nd and 3rd contract, the smart play is to minimize those hits.

Its also a mindset that they’ve bought into that opting to run is tough to balance…the great QBs over time have all been guys that stand tall in the pocket and let the play unfold, these guys are programmed to remain patient….Very difficult to turn that on and off constantly in the heat of battle. I believe from a game management perspective they have to mentally commit to a way of doing things or your risk starting to bail on plays to often.

As for Winston, he’s shown that he’s going for the play that he believes will succeed….the pass to Godwin against the Saints is proof. I dont believe telling Winston not to run would matter….He’s going to do what the moment calls, if he can advance the play running, i have no doubt he will/would.

  16. Tnew Says:

It’s amazing that some still think the RPO is only about the qb running…. it’s NOT. The ball goes into the belly of back and the reaction of the defense dictates whether the running back keeps the ball and runs or the qb pulls the ball and passes. The third option is the QB runs, but honestly this should be a very rare occurrence.

  17. StPeteBucsFan Says:

There is running and there is “running”. Aaron Rodgers not only keeps plays alive and gains lots of critical yardage running….he knows when the run is done and gets down or OB. I’d love to see Jameis playing like that.

Cam is so big he thinks he can run like a power back…I do NOT want to see any QB doing that. Cam rarely tries to get down or OB and frequently even tries to run over defenders.

I get that Cam style running is career threatening…Rodgers not so much. I don’t know how he got hurt last year…running or caught in the pocket but think about it….the pocket is NOT the safety zone some seem to think. When #3 is running he is much less likely to get blindsided…he has momentum himself to deliver a blow…he’s not simply standing still.

Injuries are a part of the NFL. #3 can get blasted in the pocket…perhaps even easier than when he is on the move.

Let the Jameis haters get ready to flame me!!! I think #3 is perhaps the most underrated runner at QB in the league. When we first got #3 I thought I haven’t seen a QB that slow since Brad Johnson. But I watched video of him with FSU and of course now with the Bucs where you can see #3 is hard to bring down…he’s got some athletic ability and is able to evade defenders. He’s never going to run away from anybody but he does seem to have the ability to make them miss tackles. Let him run like Rodgers but NEVER like Cam.

  18. AlteredEgo Says:

StPete…Jameis does an excellent job getting down on his runs….certainly can’t criticize him for not

  19. NFLNut Says:

^ I’d agree Jameis is the most under-rated running QB … his run against the Falcons his rookie year and quite a few in college are proof positive of that … however, I don’t want to see any “designed running plays” called for him.

  20. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Altered Ego

Agree completely. That’s why I’d like to see him run more. I think he actually manages his runs better than his passing in terms of realizing when the play is over.

#3 is no Cam. I hope he can grow into a Rodgers. Rodgers is ten years older and has ten more years in the league as well and was able to watch Favre for a couple seasons. #3 is just now reaching maturity. I see a great year ahead for him unless he or too many critical pieces on offense get injured.

  21. Pickgrin Says:

    NUT Says:
“I don’t want to see any “designed running plays” called for him”

Not even on 3rd/4th and 1/2 yard at important moments in the game? C’mon man…

Jameis needs more “option” opportunities inside the 10 yard line. Pull Marpet out to the wide side of the field to lead the way and roll Jameis that way giving him the option to run or throw for the TD. Haven’t seen nearly enough of that yet in Winston’s young career. Our QB’s “slipperiness”, tackle evading capabilities and WILL to make a play on the run are a legit weapon that needs to be utilized more often – that’s all I’m saying.

  22. Greecosuave Says:

Well look at WENTZ! HE RUNS. Yea he ran and got injured, big whoop. All the Did was win the SUPER BOWL with a back up QB.

Maybe that’s not a good example.

Improve the O-Line, get a running game and role JW3 out more.

  23. Papa578 Says:

A well timed run is absolutely fine for Jameis. No one expects 30 and 40 yard gallops. Jameis is certainly athletic enough to pull an occasional sneak or sweeping run. Run Jameis run!

  24. Oneilbucs Says:

The only thing I say is stop trying to coach his instincts out of him. That’s the problem with a lot of teams now. If a quarter back does run when no one is open that doesn’t mean he can’t read a defense. But again that’s what the media say n that’s what people believe the ones that don’t know football.

  25. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Perhaps we will see that this fall?” And perhaps if Jameis had run more last year we would’ve done better than 5-11. Why he didn’t I’ll never figure out apparently.

  26. Bob in Valrico Says:

Two of the better Qb’s in the league in Brady and Breeze are also among the
elder statement in the league. Not against Jameis running when its there, but
QB’s like RG3 and Michael Vick did not have as long and successful careers as
Brady and Breeze. Jameis was trying to run out of the pocket when he was overtaken and slammed to the turf. My point is if you want Jameis to be around
longer then getting the ball out faster gives him the best chance to extend his career IMO.

  27. Bob in Valrico Says:

Russell wilson and Aaron Rogers have both lost significant time due to injuries. in recent years and I would consider both mobile QB’s.
That said, to defense’s point quite possibly a game maybe two, Jameis is kind of a throwback player in the respect that he has been pretty tough and durable until
    this latest injury.
As far as wins go ,if Jameis can limit his turnover’s to one or less thw W’s
should start coming. In almost all of our losses in the last two years, Jameis had two or more TO’s.

  28. Oneilbucs Says:

Derrick Carr broke his leg in the pocket. Maroito gets injured in the pocket all the time. I’m not saying run all the time. I’m saying run on 2nd and 3 or 5 , 3rd and in 6 or under if no one is open. That’s all keeping drives alive……

  29. cgmaster Says:

I’d love to see Jameis run it a little more at times, but he’s a picket passer and always will be. Although the last game against the saints I believe he had like 30+ yards rushing. That’s what I”ll take, just get out of there when things break down and get out of bounds. AS in agreeance with those above, we should absolutely be running a QB sneak every once in a while. Lat year might have been as he was hurt, it wasn’t such a good idea, but Jameis can definitely run when he has to. He looks like an awkward Giraffe doing it, but he can run.

  30. Getaclue Says:

Well he was already playing hurt so I’m sure that’s part of it last season

  31. JimmyJack Says:

Hey Dirk. If use use Winston’s legs in the red zone……(You know the part of the field where our offense vanishes)…… we will show signs of life.

Winston showed this ability in his rookie year. He was expected him to improve on that part of his game…..Instead he got worse and worser in his 2nd and 3rd years. Now that part of his game is basically non existent. Many plays stood out last season as missed opportunities because Winston decided not to run. This has to change and he needs to see positive yards better.
