No Sign Of J.R. Sweezy

April 19th, 2018

The proof is in the pictures.

As a man devoted to truth, justice and all things Buccaneers, Joe has clicked on the hundreds of photos the Buccaneers have released through the first three days of offseason conditioning at One Buc Palace this week.

In all those pictures of dudes working out and going through drills and sprints on the field, including group photos of offensive linemen, Joe has not seen right guard J.R. Sweezy.

Sweezy walked off the Monday Night Football field and into a boot and crutches back on December 18. Jameis Winston and general manager Jason Licht were seen hugging Sweezy in the locker room, and as of late March he was not cleared for football activities.

It seems Sweezy remains unable to perform — a full four months after his injury, the details of which have not been made public.

Bad sign — or a good sign, if you’d like to see the Bucs move on and get younger and healthier at right guard.

With right tackle Demar Dotson having a mysterious recent knee surgery, it will be interesting to see if health leads the Bucs to drafting an offensive lineman next week.

$20 all-you-can-eat buffet kicks off at 6 p.m. and runs all night long. Be there!!

That TD pass to end the season cost us a decent opportunity at Nelson. Nice morale boost though.

  2. Joe Blahak Says:

    Nelson! Or trade down…

  3. feelthepewterpower Says:

Must have torn multiple things. I wish him well.

  4. Doctor Stroud Says:

Good eye, Joe! We know more about the “mysterious” Skunk Ape than we do about this guy. #PaidFloridaVacation

  5. Defense Rules Says:

1sparkybuc … “That TD pass to end the season cost us a decent opportunity at Nelson. Nice morale boost though.” Oh the shame of it, we won. What’s wrong with this team? They had a chance to go 4-12 and blew it.

Back on the home front, sure do hope no one’s counting on JR Sweezy to suit up this year. Personally not counting on Dotson to stay healthy either. Two major holes in our starting OLine. Fix one in the draft; the other in FA. If not, loooong season ahead.

  6. Wright in Montana Says:

I think the Bucs are keeping a tight lid on things to at least try and conceal their needs/desires on draft day. Who knows though, just a theory.

  7. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

By the grace of god last season will have been his last as a Buc. Draft his replacement, preferably with the best O-lineman in the draft, Quenton Nelson.

  8. Easy Says:

After Nelson is drafted he will be a June 1st cut with no dead money on the books.

  9. mdsbuc Says:

Damn, I’m hoping that Nelson is available at 7. If not, pick up Hernandez or whoever the next best available guard is. Improving the O-line is going to help both the running game and Winston’s ability to deliver the ball.

  10. darin Says:

That’s a shame. Thought Sweez would be a good signing. Wrong I am again. I’ll be surprised if Licht passes on Nelson if he’s there. Unless Barkley is too. Still prefer the trade back tho. Get it done Licht. Hernandez or Wynn will do just fine.

  11. Tom Edrington Says:

Should be charged with Grand Theft

  12. Capt.Tim Says:

If Sweezy wasnt part of their plans going foward. Why wouldnt they have cut him, with an injury settlement, before the Beginning of the NFL league year starts.

It started here, with”We might Draft Nelson””. Then “we may”, “We Could”,”We should”, “We need to””. And now its “we must Draft Nelson”.

I havent really heard anyone with the Bucs discuss Sweeny.
Its obvious that the Bucs felt Center and LG were the weak spots.
By signing Jensen, and moving Marpet to LG- they may feel they’ve solidifued the line.
Benenoch ended the season at RT. I said last Preseason that Benenoch would end up starting- either at RT or RG

How we here view the line, may be substanially different than how the team views the line
They may plan on Caleb being the RG. Now, they may feel the line is good.
Or Caleb at RT.and Sweezy. Line is good
Or, They may now be looking for a RT.
Point being, while the posters at JoeBuc are in a “Nelson for RG” frenzy, the team may be seeing an entirely difderent need.

  13. Westernbuc Says:

All the more reason to draft Nelson or trade down and grab Hernandez. Imagine, an offensive line that can dominate up the middle. Perfect for Barber and a rookie or two.

  14. ComeOnJoe Says:

If Sweezy shows up to workouts and passes a physical, he can be cut without compensation. His agent is doing a good job.

  15. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @Capt Tim

Real simple answer. If the we Cut Sweezy pre June 1st, we free up 4.5 million and take a 3 million dollar cap hit. If we cut him post June 1st, we free up 6.5 million and he’ll only give us a 1 million dollar cap hit.

  16. DoSomething Says:

Trade down! Pick up Wynn, a RB and a CB in the first two rounds

  17. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Capt Tim,

Both sides have to agree to a settlement, maybe Sweezy didn’t agree. Plus it announces to 31 other teams where your huge hole is on the line so they know your draft strategy to a degree. Also no rush, what if 2 more lineman go down in otas or camp. Makes no sense to rush that move unless he’s due a large roster bonus

  18. Bucballbaby84 Says:

They will cut him when the time is right. I have no doubt in my mind in one way or another the Bucs are going to select and offensive lineman in the first round. Be it at pick 7 with Nelson or moving back and getting Hernandez.

  19. Bucballbaby84 Says:

They have repeatedly emphasized they wanted to get meaner and nastier in the trenches and that was a big part of this offseason. They’ve been slapping it in our faces what they plan to do the whole time!

  20. K_Bassuka Says:

Maybe Sweezy hasn’t agreed to an injury settlement and they’re awaiting for his recovery in order to cut him. I think he is not a good player and needs to be let go, healthy or not and even if he’s not part of the team we shouldn’t waste our 7th overall pick overpaying for a G. That’s like drafting the greatest K in the history of the NFL with the number 7 pick, just doesn’t make any sense.

  21. Joeypoppems Says:

Wish him a speedy recovery. Its time to move on from him tho.

But lets face it, this regime has a history of relying on declining/injured players. I hope they arent counting on him to get healthy and then stay healthy.

  22. Capt.Tim Says:

    Blake and Real
Makes sense. Thank you for clarifying

  23. Bucn Enough Says:

Another “swing and a miss” in free agency by Licht.

  24. MarineBucsFan Says:

I think they have learned their lesson depending on injured players. They may be holding out hope but I’m sure they plan to address the OLine somewhere in this draft or FA afterwards.

  25. passthebuc Says:

Its the trenches that count. The OL has 3 good lineman and nothing else. From that standpoint, trading down may be their only option.

  26. Tampabaybucfan Says:

OK JBF posters…..You are on the clock and Nelson is there but you get a call from Buffalo offering you their 12, 22 & 53rd picks.
You could pick up Davenport, Hernandez and use the 53rd and our 69th to move back into the first round to draft whatever running back you like….(Guice for me)
Then with our 38th we select the best DB on the board.
So you end up with 3 first round picks and a second.

I realize Nelson is a can’t miss prospect….but you have to admit the extra picks would be very enticing. A nice dilema to have.

  27. BucFanFromOH Says:

We all but HAVE to trade down at this point. We need multiple offensive pieces still and that’s not even the side of the ball that hurt us the most last year! We need STARTERS at RG, RT, CB, SS, RB along with added depth at DT, DE, and DB’s.

  28. JonBuc Says:

Licht’s Out needed Sweezey to see the field after the Sweezey Swindle of 2016 where a newly minted free agent immediately headed to IR before even putting on shorts/practice jerseys. That mediocre season of 2017 has come and gone…so perhaps that ill-fated contract has hit the paper shredder a la Anthony Collins and Pastry Baker.

  29. Bucballbaby84 Says:

The bills are only giving up both of their first round picks if they can move up into the top two spots. At no point would they give us both of their first for our 7th. That’s a fantasy world.

  30. Defense Rules Says:

@BucFanFromOH … “We need STARTERS at RG, RT, CB, SS, RB along with added depth at DT, DE, and DB’s.” Couldn’t agree more. Dilly dilly.

  31. SammyRebel Says:

This guys been a bust since Seattle, throw him off the plank

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    1sparky

    I agree…..or we could’ve demanded a kings ransom for that top 5 pick……oh well….it is what it is…..

    seems like we need 2DB’s 2 RB’s 2olinemen and a DT and DE……oh boy……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  33. SB Says:

This guy is a swindler on the level of Sam Bradford almost.

  34. SB Says:

@Wright in Montana…….What part are you in? Im in West Yellowstone.

  35. OneBucPerson Says:

Just cut him and move Ali back to RG. Then that opens us up to take either Nelson, Hernandez, or Smith at LG in the first 2 rounds.

  36. Mike Says:

Since when do these clowns get to hide injury statuses and descriptions?
    What the hell is this?

  37. Joel Says:

He’s hanging out with Carl Nicks… laughing at how many injuries this franchise has every year and nothing changes.

  38. StPeteBucsFan Says:

There are “needs” and there is desperation.

E.G. I felt we were desperate at only one spot…the DL…the long history of failure there…only ONE player of significance and NO DE’s to count on except for Noah who has been injured and is more of a pass rush specialist.

The FA signings have me thinking we still have a need on the DL but no desperation. I think the same thing about the OL. Not desperate but clearly a need…same for DB…I do not hate our safeties like the rest here. I don’t even view safety as a big need.

Before we go nucking futs fixing our defensive backfield I’d like to see how our guys might do behind a good DL that can move the QB out of his comfort zone and bat down some balls and hey…a sack or two wouldn’t be bad either.

Barkley is the only game changer on the board…Nelson would be an excellent long term addition and of course Chubb plugs in at our weakest position DE.

I do NOT want any small DB taken at 7!!! There are NO Patrick Petersens in this draft…there are NO pure “shutdown” corners in this draft and NO safety is going to change us dramatically for ’18.

  39. Pa Privateer Says:

Find a way to trade down twice and pick up as late 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th round picks. We could still pick up OG, RB, several CBs, safeties, DT, DE, OT and more.

Dream world and let me dream today….(not happening)

Trade back to 12 with buffalo and get their 12, 22, and 56
Trade back to 23 with NE and get their 23 and 31

    22 OG Hernandez
    23 DT Bryan
    31 CB Jackson
    38 CB Davis
    56 RB Chubb
    102 DE Lewis
    144 SS Apke
    180 FS Watts
    202 OT Crabtree
    255 QB Barret

That is a lot of meat and potatoes folks. Just think about all those options?
No reply needed just me dreaming

  40. The Buc Realist Says:

    @StpeteBucsFan

Could not agree with you more!!!!!!! I just posted something close to wahat you said in another section!!!!!!!!!

“I would love to see a the best DT tackle with the #7 overall pick!!!!! Talent that will let the D-line rotate and stay healthier!!!!!! I would rather grab best available free agent CB then a DT after the draft!!!!!!!! Find the RB in the second!!!!!!! Grab Guard in the 3rd!!!!!!!!

The Bucs lose too much in the trenches, and to think “mission accomplished” with free-agent cast-offs for the D-line is flat out wrong!!!!!!!!!”

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. Pickgrin Says:

Bucs are drafting an OG with a high pick this year.

Releasing Sweezy is really the only way to re-coup some significant amount of (badly needed at this point) cap space – but they aren’t going to do that until a replacement is already on the team.

  42. big serious Says:

i am getting hammered in some Buccs groups for saying this BUT in 3 days of Off Season workouts not 1 picture of GMC. Whats the deal?

  43. big serious Says:

usually there are videos of him doing drills in the sand etc…. NOTHING

  44. unbelievable Says:

D line and o line both need more help!

We are missing a starting RT and OG. Two pretty massive holes.

  45. deminion Says:

Get rid of this bum please he didn’t play good when he was “healthy” I say cut bait there is no point in depending on this guy

  46. jebbucfan Says:

It’s to bad we can.t pay players for what they’ve done not what they might do. Then we could give J.R. a coupon for a free slurpee and a old bike with two flat tires. There you go Nancy, we hope you enjoy it… you’ve earned it.

  47. BucTrooper Says:

This guy is such a thief he should run for Congress.

  48. Mike Johnson Says:

I got to give it to you Joe..You really know how to make me Bust loose in Laughter. Your articles title of, No signs of Sweezy.. Nuts me the F.. Up!!!
There are no signs of Sweezy because we are all looking in the wrong places for him. To catch Bro Sweez, you gotta hit him up at the bank or at ClearWater beach where he is tannin anf grinnin!! My man Sweez put the Spin move on the Bucs. He’s still gettin his money for nothin and his chicks for free!! I’ve heard of the Con game. But Sweez done put over the Cons..of all Cons!!!!

  49. brooks55hof Says:

Missing in action. Think retirement home, as my brothers have said. This guy is a turd. Move on. I’m so over this ghost

  50. Buccfan37 Says:

Too many secret clauses in the Sweezy contract I’m guessing. Fans were never on the need to know list. A fingers crossed deal.
