Movement Not Ruled Out

April 9th, 2018

Talkin’ draft.

The Bucs currently sit at No. 7 in the draft. That could (or couldn’t) change.

When speaking at the NFL owners meetings last month in Orlando, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht did not rule out moving that pick.

Would he consider moving up or moving back in the draft? Licht said, yes.

“If something presents itself on draft day or before, you have to entertain it,” Licht said. “There is always moving back in other rounds, too. You can make some hay in other rounds, too.”

Joe has been of the mind that if Bradley Chubb or Saquon Barkley is not on the board when the Bucs are on the clock, Licht should be wheeling and dealing with a quarterback-hungry team.

It sure seems as if Licht wants to somehow recoup that third round pick he paid in the ransom for edge rusher Jason Pierre-Paul. With as many holes that are currently on the roster, Joe can understand.

Football gods please give us trade down option to get Hernandez ,michel and a top 3 to 5 corner. 🤩

  2. Greecosuave Says:

If you feel moving back and gaining picks is what we need, then do it.

  3. denjoe Says:

He’s why there are so many holes.

  4. Capt.Tim Says:

If Barkley or Chubb arent available at 7th, then our other needs would dictate that we try to trade back.
At 7, you have lost calue if you dont aquire a Playmaker.

Playmakers, By the way, are the following
    QB,RB,WR,TE,LT,DE,DT,and CB

The top ranked CB is Denzel Ward. He is too frailly built to succeed in the NFL.
Plus plenty of 2nd and 3rd tier CBs that look great.

7 is just really expensive for a Guard or safety. Even as much as I would love to see James on the team.

Soo, to get our “moneys worth”for the 7th pick-trading back seems the best option

  5. OneBucPerson Says:

If the player we most like isn’t there at 7 and one of the top QB prospects is slipping we need to see about trading down with Buffalo to either pick up their 2 1sts or a 1st and a 2nd.

  6. gambelero Says:

It’s fun to speculate, but short of a Tunsil-like event, I can’t see one of the top four QBs falling to 7. You can pencil in Barkley as a Buc.

I’d LOVE a trade down … but … I think there’s a 95% chance all four of the top QB’s will be gone in the first 6 picks.

I believe we’ll end up with Saquon, Chubb or Nelson, which is also GREAT!

    I’ve still got it:

    BROWNS: QB
GIANTS: QB … or a trade to the Bills who would take a QB as well
    JETS: QB
BILLS or CARDINALS: QB (I could see Browns grabbing Chubb if they stay put)
BRONCOS: Chubb … but if he’s gone a QB or Denzel Ward
    COLTS: Nelson or Ward
    BUCS: Saquon Barkley

I honestly think Licht will be sweating if Chubb and Nelson are gone and only Saquon is still on the board at #7.

I think Licht will want to draft Saquon but that he’ll also start sweating, knowing that he could still get a great RB in the 2nd round, so it might make more sense to draft the top CB like Denzel Ward at #7 and then use the 2nd rounder on a RB like Guice, Michel, Jones II, Chubb or Penny.

Personally, I’d love to see Saquon on the Bucs … but at the same time, if Licht drafts Denzel Ward and gets one of the aforementioned RB’s in the 2nd, I’m not going to hate on him … I’ll wait and see how things play out.

If Licht drafts Minkah Fitzpatrick or Derwin James … I’ll also be okay and wait and see how things play out, though I think #7 is high for a safety in this draft.

However, if Licht drafts Viti Vea or Marcus Davenport or shocks all of us and drafts someone like Mike McGlinchey (crazier things have happened, but this would be shocking) or Roquan Smith … I may just break my TV!

Crazy things like moving up and drafting a kicker in the 2nd

  11. Maze Says:

Only a few more weeks until Barkley is a Buc.

  12. lambchop Says:

If the Bucs have the chance to get Saquon, then it’s gotta be a quick and easy decision. 2nd round could be Mike Hughes, Isaiah Oliver or Josh Jackson in no particular order. Cuz who else would you draft at 7? An OL, S, or CB over probably the most talented player in the draft?

I saw a mock where the Bucs traded back up into the 1st round. That would be too costly. I think Licht would rather wheel and deal to get the 3rd round pick back before I see him give up more draft capital to move up again into the 1st. A trade up would potentially mean only getting 3 players in the draft in total. We are more than 3 players away from being legit.

If Saquon is gone, the Bucs can mortgage the stadium to get Sony Michel for all I care. I want either Saquon or Sony on this team!

  13. Rick Says:

To any or all that can break down draft value (because I don’t have the knowledge, working 90 hours a week since forever kind of does that) here is the question. If it were to play out that Chubb and Nelson are gone but Barkley is there at 7 and we just can’t get a trade down partner or they offer to little in return. Say we take Barkley, do we then have the ammunition (even with throwing in DJax to a WR needy team) to move up from our spot in the 2nd back into the late teens or early 20’s of 1st round (where it’s likely he comes off the board) to get Hernandez. Yes it leaves us short of having a shot at a top flight DB unless a gem miraculously falls to the 4th? But it likely gives us a monster of an offense. Would prefer the former where we do get a trade partner and move down just enough to get Any combination of Hernandez who I think is going to be a lights out OL, one of the top DB’S, and RB in this order Sony, Guice, Chubb.

  14. Rick Says:

Would also be happy with Buffalo as a trade down partner and at least getting their #12 & 22 picks. Again I don’t know the draft value comparison if it nets us another pick? But with those two spots we would have a shot at Davenport at 12 (I’m of the school of thought if we have a killer DLine a mediocre backfield of DB’S will look way better than they actually are) and Hernandez at 22. Then unless we get more picks from Buffalo or another team different deal we take the best available RB in the early 4th that at least complements what Barber does and doesn’t do well for us. Ballage or Walton could be a steal in the 4th. Thoughts please?

  15. Defense Rules Says:

@Licht … “If something presents itself on draft day or before, you have to entertain it. There is always moving back in other rounds, too. You can make some hay in other rounds, too.”

Pretty much of a statement of the obvious? What exactly did anyone expect him to say in response to that question? “Nope, we’re the Bucs & we don’t deal. That’s why we’re as good as we are.”

  16. lambchop Says:

    @Rick,

I too don’t know exactly what it would cost, but barring any trade collateral, my guess would be that it would take our 2nd round pick, 4th round pick for sure. Maybe an additional pick somewhere in the lower rounds in next years draft.

But, the point I am making is it’s not worth losing that many picks. As it is, we have patchwork starters at certain positions. The percentages of draft picks being bonafide stars is also low. So, we need as many picks as possible to counter both of those issues. More picks allows us to fill more holes and more picks increases the probability of picking a starter for the long term. That combined with the fact that there are always solid players in the 2nd to 3rd rounds is plenty reason to sit tight. If anything, a trade down scenario from the 7th spot would be a way better option than trying to move up into the 1st Rd given we already lost our 3rd round pick in the JPP trade.

The CB position is more important than the OG position. We can get the CB with the 38th pick if we get Saquon with the 7th.

  20. John meeks Says:

Guys,Barkley will not be there when the bucs pick.no way he last till pick 7.someone would trade up for him if he makes it past pick four but I think he goes #2 overall cause gettleman isn’t crazy about the quarterbacks.however if he does get by the giants at pick2 I assure you John Dorsey will grab him at number4 for the Cleveland browns. John Dorsey is no fool,Cleveland actually has a very good football mind now!

  21. John meeks Says:

Joe,why am I not in moderation??You know I need to be watched closely !especially since we are this close to the draft!!

  22. 813bucboi Says:

I hope we get nelson or trade down……

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  23. Frank Pillow Says:

I don’t think the Giants stay at 2. Unless they’re committed to drafting Eli’s replacement, the value just isn’t there compared to the bounty they’d get for moving down. The top 3 picks may end up being QBs (fifth year option and rookie scale really mitigate some of that risk). Then Cleveland at 4 can field offers or stand pat. Their OL is in shambles. No Mack (ATL). No Thomas. Assuming they invest in a QB at 1, they need to support him. That’s either via Barkley (who will be running for his life) or Nelson. Yeah a G at 4 is crazy, but so is drafting skill players and nothing in the trenches. So Chubb’s an option there too. Pick 5 is a QB. That leaves the Colts. If Nelson or Chubb are there they pounce. All things being equal, we should end up with one of the big three.

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

Not high on Barkley because he’s a Penn St RB. They don’t fair well in this NFl.
Now DE Chubb at 7 would make me do a Kentucky Bourbon Jig!!! We shall see. Strange things happen during the draft. And if one of the top 4 QB’s is there at 7, it could trigger a trade down. Now if Mr Chubb be there though..grab him like a fire sell at toysRus!! You can never have enough quality DE’s people. Just ask last yrs Playoff contenders.

  25. Bill Byrne Says:

“With as many holes as currently on the roster.” I don’t thing so Joe. Many of the holes have been addressed and “only” running back, corner back and safety remain. The draft should take of that and the future free agents once camp cuts begin can fill the holes for the players who do not perform. This could be a fun year Joe.

  26. Crabberbill Says:

I agree with NFLNUT, one of the big 3 will be there at 7. If not trade down with Buffalo for their 2 first round picks plus a third. I’d still take Vea at 7 lol!!!

  27. NFLNut Says:

    *******************

    RICK,

    Good questions.

Firstly, if one of the top 4 QBs is still on the board at #7 and we trade with the Bills, we could likely get their #12, #22 and #96 picks. If that happens, we’d be loaded with picks and could draft Derwin James (#12), Will Hernandez (#22), Sony Michel (#38) and the best CB available with the #96 … or we could take the best CB available with the #12 pick and then the best SS available with the #96 pick.

However, if we take Saquon at #7, it would be highly unlikely we’d trade back up into the 1st round to draft Hernandez as it would likely require us giving up a 2019 pick, along with our own 2nd and 4th rounder this year to do so.

What I think would be more likely is that Licht takes Saquon at #7 and then trades his #38 pick for a mid to low 2nd rounder and an extra 3rd rounder. If he does that he could still grab a RB like Rashaad Penny in the 2nd round and then daft a nasty OG like Frank Ragnow in the 3rd round.

    *******************

  28. NFLNut Says:

    Bill Byrne,

Personally, I’d add OG to that list of “needs” for this team as we can’t depend on Sweezy. So, I’d personally like to see a RB, CB, SS and OG acquired in this draft at the very least.

  29. NFLNut Says:

    Rick,

My last paragraph in the starred reply was wrong … if Licht drafts Saquon at #7 he’d likely use the 2nd rounder on the best CB available and then the extra 3rd rounder acquired on an OG like Ragnow … he obviously would not draft both Saquon and Rashaad Penny 🙂

  30. SOEbuc Says:

“The Bucs currently sit at No. 7 in the draft. That could (or couldn’t) change.”

Wow. There really isn’t sh!t to talk about other than rookie meetings in the time period between big FA signings and the draft.

  31. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    NFLNut

Don’t go squishy on me now lol….Chubb, Barkley, Nelson or trade down.

In your scenario with the trade with Buffalo all kinds of possibilities could unfold.

If we use #12 on James or Minkah I can see us trading one of the lower picks if they can move up that #22 to grab Vea or Davenport. I like what Licht did in the FA period but I still want another stud DL.
