Manning Rules

April 23rd, 2018

Fresh chatter for Jason Licht to digest

Twenty-four years on the Giants beat for the New York Post gives Paul Schwartz a lot of street cred.

So Joe’s ears perked hearing Schwartz speak confidently this morning about what the Giants will do/not do with their No. 2 overall pick.

Schwartz hit the national airwaves on the The Dan Patrick Show and explained how deep the Giants’ commitment is to quarterback Eli Manning. He detailed that the Giants’ new coach-GM combo thoroughly evaluated Manning and quickly understood that he was hung out to dry by a brutal offensive line, no dynamic running back and a lack of weapons, largely due to injury.

Eli is the guy, Schwartz says, and the Giants would love to give him running back Saquon Barkley for Christmas in Thursday’s draft after bolstering their o-line in free agency.

If Barkley’s gone at No. 2, Schwartz is convinced the Giants would welcome trading down but only as far as No. 6 where they could be nearly certain either defensive end Bradley Chubb or guard Quenton Nelson would be available.

Schwartz, though, seemed content that the Giants would stay at No. 2 and be very happy with their haul.

Yes, the Bucs might need a miracle to get Chubb, Barkley or Nelson at No. 7 overall. More likely the trade-down offers will come and Jason Licht’s poker and evaluation skills will get a massive test.

All-you-can-eat buffet available starting at 6 p.m. and runs all night long. Be there!! Joe and Ira Kaufman will be in the house with the Stick Carriers and The Commish. Raw energy and Bucs love everywhere.

That’s what a meaningless (except for the draft) last game victory over the Saints will get you!

  2. Kobe Faker Says:

“Quenton Nelson will be available at 7 but Forrest Gump will not draft him….Is JBF ready for the onslaught?”

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

All these whiners still complaining about the last game of the season? ????

Three words here for ya buddy: GET OVER IT!!!!!!!

……..we’re still getting a good player at no 7……. I’m hoping for Derwin James.

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    GUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMPPPPPPPPPPPPP!!!!!

  5. uckinator Says:

I’m in the camp that the “Big three” we’re after will be gone by the time we pick. They’ll be 1 quarterback left to hold hostage for a team trading up. Analysis: No trade down for Licht. Buccaneer pick at 7: Safety/cornerback Minkah Fitzgerald. And I’ll be disappointed again.

  6. uckinator Says:

On defense, the closer to the ball, the more important the position. Where’s Sapp when you need him !

  7. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I wouldn’t select Fitzgerald. ……grossly overhyped player in this year’s draft

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

“Drafting is like a box of chocolates, everything i pick turns to a bust”

    Forrest Licht

  9. Frank Pillow Says:

Weapons for Eli? That’s either a giant smokescreen or a signal that their #2 is for sale- if someone wants to pay dearly for a QB or Barkley.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I don’t think anyone is trading all the way up to 2 this year……They will likely take Barkley if Cleveland doesn’t take him #1…..

  11. Reality_43 Says:

    Who the hell is Fitzgerald?

  12. 813bucboi Says:

    daily

    I agree…..but it is what it is……

dirk and licht said “we’re close”…..they said we’re not that far off…..will the fans “cringe” at the product on the field?……will licht and dirk cringe if we start out slow?…..will they “cringe” if we’re left with BPA in the draft?…..time will tell!!!!!!

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  13. Gambelero Says:

Four QBs go ahead of us with the Bills and possibly one other team massively over-paying to move up. It’s like we’re picking third. Barkley, Nelson or Chubb in order of likelihood.

I hope I’m wrong. A premium priced tradedown might yield more long term. We could do a ton with 12 & 22, or NE’s two late ones and two 2s.

  14. Buccon Says:

Winston has been layed out a lil more than most’ while the nfl is a big up big down business if the Bucs want to see success the quarterback need protection!!!! Bucs draft Quenton Nelson first pick
Bucs draft Mike Mcglenchey second pick
Bucs draft Isaiah Oliver third pick
Bucs draft Jessie Bates lll forth pick
This would be a grand slam for Jason all these players are known to perform Oliver and Bates learning from the secondary grimes conte Tandy while Nelson and mcglenchey learn from Jenson marpet Dotson Smith sweezy!! My sleeper pick is Darius tice USF big fella gone win a lot of yards you can’t arm tackle that man you gotta put ya head down in that’s a flag in 2018

  15. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

If the Browns don’t grab Barkley at number one, no way he drops past the Giants at number 2.
IMHO, the Browns need to grab him at number 1.

    @reality

You never heard of F. Scott. Fitzgerald?????????????????

  18. Realbucfan941 Says:

Could be a ruse by the Giants to get Cleveland to go rb #1 and leave them with the guy they covet… Sam Darnold.

  19. Gambelero Says:

I agree with Buccon, but couldn’t say it with the same eloquence.

  20. unbelievable Says:

Not sure who Minkah Fitzgerald is, but I really hope we do NOT draft Minkah Fitzpatrick at #7….

  21. Posey99 Says:

I dont see up spending a 1st and a 3rd on DE this year… If chubb is there at 7 that means the QB frenzy played out. I’d rather trade back a few, pickup an extra pick and take BPA. We would still have at chance at a top S or CB depending on who the partner was.

  22. Bucsfanman Says:

If we just would have lost ALL our games, we could have whoever we want!!!!

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

    Says NOBODY, ever!

  24. The Buc Realist Says:

The funny part is that 3 years from now, The sheep and so-called fans will be complaining about a pick that was in the late teens that NFL GM Licht did not identify and pick!!!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  25. Tony from L.A. Says:

    Nelson will be there

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  26. StPeteBucsFan Says:

If none of the big three are there we simply trade down. I think there will be some offers, maybe not the end of the world but if we miss out on the big three we can recoup with some additional picks.

Remember the odds of draft picks busting? Licht has pretty well defied those odds if you look at his 4th round picks. If he gets multiple picks with his record I feel pretty good about who we end up with.

Like BBB I lust for Barkley but if that’s not to be then a trade down is fine.

I simply cannot imagine us passing on Chubb if miraculously he’s still around at seven. I sure hope we wouldn’t pass on Nelson either…the rest MEH.

  27. chipbuc Says:

It is rumored that the Browns like Ryan if they pick a QB. It has also been rumored that the Giants like Darnold. So if Darnold is there at 2 the giants might pick Darnold. At 3 the Jets are rumored to like Mayfield. So if the Browns at 4 pick Chubb, it opens up a trade by Denver at 5 for Rosen to the Dolphins at 11 who the coach supposedly loves. At 6 the Colts need to protect Luck, so a Nelson pick is possible. So there you have it . It is possible for Barkley to fall to the Bucs.

  28. M0J0 Says:

Even if Chubb and Barkley are gone, I think Nelson has a good shot at being available at 7, and if he does, Bucs have to make that their pick. You have to walk away with a clear cut, top notch pro-bowl type player at #7, and Nelson is very much a safe and sure fire pick.

  29. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    ^Agree completely^ Mojo.

  30. Rod Munch Says:

No to drafting a RB in the top 10.

No to drafting a G in the top 10. Every single guard drafted in the top 10 since 2000 has been a bust for the team drafting them.

Chubb, whatever, he’s just the best of a very bad class, perhaps he’s a good starter, but I think it’s more likely he tops at above average. In any case he doesn’t appear to me to be a homerun surefire selection, he’s more in the Dion Jordan mold in that I think he’s a bit of a risky pick. Not saying he’ll bust, just saying I think he’s a higher risk than normal to do so.

The Bucs HAVE to come away with a starter at corner, that’s the position they put themselves into this offseason and waiting until round 2 to get that guy is really really risky. Ward seems like a perfect fit for a guy that can be a high end player and can step in day one and has an elite attribute (speed) which you need for a corner in the top 10. Yes, if Chubb is there you would take him since you always take the defensive lineman over the DB unless that DB is clearly the better player.

We shall see what happens with the draft board if that run on QB’s really happens, but I think the best thing that can happen for the Bucs is to get a day one corner.

  31. chipbuc Says:

I should have said Allen for the Browns.

  32. Roadwarrior Says:

There is no way 4 QBs are going before the bucs at 7 no freeken way.
    There isn’t even 1 worth a top 10 pick.

  33. Hodad Says:

They’re all in on Manning until they’re all not in on Manning. That can be draft night when they get his cheap replacement.

  34. feelthepewterpower Says:

Eli Manning is horrible…oline or no oline lol

  35. feelthepewterpower Says:

Best case scenario: allen to cle, darnold to nyg, rosen to the jets, fitz to the browns, mayfield to broncos, chubb to the colts, barkley to tb

  36. NFLNut Says:

    ************

I still think the Giants go QB …. they could already have moved from #2 to #6 and received THREE extra 2nd rounders but turned that down … I LOVE Saquon but he is NOT worth the #6 and three extra 2nd rounders as that could net you Chubb, Sony Michel, a great CB and an much needed O-Lineman if you’re the Giants. If they don’t draft a QB, Gettleman should be fired for not trading down with the Jets!

    ************

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

    Kobe agrees with Munchie

We were last at 32 worst in pass coverage last year

Gump has not signed any free agent corners

Last 3 years, every journey man qb, backup and those even out of the league had career games throwing for over 70% with the short passing scheme….

Can we go to this season with this pathetic secondary and be successful?

  38. Nate Says:

Who says corners and safeties HAVE to come w/ a top 7 pick….i don’t see Deion Sanders in this draft

Ohhhh we missed out on the best FL state safety to come out last year so we reach for one this year???….uuuughh

Nate Dub still misses the linebacker days at least out D had direction lol smh

    Nate Duuuuub ….im back!!!!

  39. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @Nate

Great observation! There is only ONE Jalen Ramsey…6-2 208 lbs..and incredibly athletic…an exceptional talent…and there are no clones of his in this year’s draft.

I’m sure FSU fans are hoping for the second coming of J.R. ain’t happenin’ this year.

  40. I’m a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Kobe Faker…. That’s a pretty good one!!! Jason Gump!!! I really think Forest could run faster and probably pick a better box of Chocolates than our AC/DC loving GM!!!

  41. Jason Mclaurin Says:

Now you have it Joe the Giants are gonna take one of the big three and like I said before Jason Licht already said it when they traded JPP to Tampa Bay that they made the move because they were selecting B. Chubb to go in their new 3-4 scheme which will get eaten because they have no DBs. B. Chubb isn’t going to fall to Tampa Bay which you know already once we acquired JPP you totally stop hoping for his fall once we made the move because it went hand in hand with two direct needs.
Now I get to break your heart and let you know that Barkley most definitely will not go past the Colts which needs to be your next story instead of continuing to hype a Barkley or Nelson fall. The worst kept secrets in this draft is that B. Chubb is going to the Giants and that Barkley isn’t going past the Colts so we are obviously drafting either D. James or Fitzpatrick and I’m an FSU fan and I’m for one hoping we draft James beyond me being a fan of FSU but being a long time Buc fan and realizing now that we have our end in JPP now we get our dream safety in James who plays more closer to Palamalou than Lynch which means James is a super beast for this defense. We should trade a draft pick for R. Darby of the Eagles to cement the secondary as well plus he and Jameis are always together off the field as well anyways which is actually what Winston needs at this point in his career and James is also on the JBF as being a fan of “Buc Ball” as well. Stop with the FSU bias against and recognize a better need and true fit for Buc Ball to return once again. I know James has fully recovered from injuries from college and played under a garbage coordinator and coach at college last year plus that fact has been recognize on JBF as well. The true wild card is who the Browns get at #4 which everything tells me the Browns will draft Q. Nelson to break your heart Joe but the possibility to trade down twice for more picks is even more entertaining which I will post on the next D. James post
