Give Jerry A Call

April 14th, 2018

Grab some draft picks.

In case you were pounding brews earlier this evening to kick off the weekend, there was news made today.

The Cowboys cut loose wide receiver Dez Bryant.

No, this post is not about the Bucs potentially picking up Bryant. It is unlikely and unnecessary. However, the Cowboys’ decision today could start a domino effect that could help the Bucs out.

Now Joe, despite fighting draft fatigue, is one to watch NFL shows discussing who may go where. Even before Bryant was cut, there was strong speculation the Cowboys would pick a receiver in the first round, and scuttlebutt out of north Texas suggests Cowboys shot-caller Jerry Jones has his eyes on Alabama wide receiver Calvin Ridley.

Various NFL insiders believe Ridley could go as high as No. 15 to Arizona. Joe has even seen one expert predict the 49ers would draft Ridley at No. 9. The Cowboys pick at No. 19.

Now would Ridley be a reach for the Cowboys if they traded with the Bucs up to No. 7? Very likely. But Joe is of the mind Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht should be talking to Jones to gauge how desperate Jones is for a receiver. Shoot, perhaps Licht might catch Jones on his third Johnny Walker Blue of the afternoon and could just rake in a haul.

Joe has long been a proponent of trading down if the Bucs cannot land Saquon Barkley or Bradley Chubb. Joe is just guessing that Licht is itching to recover a third round pick he spent last month, the one Licht sent to New York in the Jason Pierre-Paul trade.

Dallas’ third round pick is No. 81.

$20 all-you-can-eat buffet kicks off at 6 p.m. and runs all night long. Be there!!

    Just a third? I’ll take their 2nd and 1st.

  2. Joe Says:

    Just a third?

Oh, no! Would at least have to swap out first round picks with another pick thrown in as well. Figured Bucs could pick up Dallas’ third.

  3. __TGH__ Says:

You seem to be skeptical (rightly so) of the available options, but I’m not sure I’ve read a direct answer from either of you…

    Two Joes, two answers:

If the big 3 are off the board and trading down is not a viable option, who do you draft?

  4. Dave Says:

*OR* Jerry could call Jason and offer to buy DeSean Jackson’s contract plus give us that missing third round draft pick. That would be a solid win for everyone.

  5. Joe Says:

If the big 3 are off the board and trading down is not a viable option, who do you draft?

That’s a tough one. Probably reach for Marcus Davenport or Sony Michel. Hard to fathom some deal couldn’t be worked out with a quarterback-hungry team. If Bradley Chubb/Barkley/Nelson (Joe wouldn’t draft him) are gone, that means either Josh Allen or Baker Mayfield is hanging out there.

2nd JOE – Draft the top cornerback on your board or Vita Vea.

  6. BigHogHaynes Says:

Baker Mafield..what the hell for, when Colin K is out there for the cheap!!

  7. __TGH__ Says:

I like Davenport, heard he didn’t interview very well, too bad. He would be my pick too. Would also consider the T from ND… we have to control the line of scrimmage, simple as that.

  8. Joeypoppems Says:

I dont understand why they would give up on Desean Jackson after 1 season. The whole point of last season was weapons for Winston and now fans are over with it lol.

Im all for getting an extra day 2 pick, but we can do it without giving up key weapons on offense.

  9. Joeypoppems Says:

And if they reach for Sony Michel at #7 something in my house is going to break lol.

  10. Waterboy Says:

You ain’t kidding, there will be a lot of things breaking in my house if they draft Michel at #7!

If the big 3 are off the board and no trade down options they’ll probably take Derwin James but I’d take Denzel Ward (forget the can’t develop a CB talk, coaches can be replaced). Safety is not a position that I’d spend a #7 pick on. You can get a good safety in free agency almost every year.

  11. gambelero Says:

I keep hearing “If the big three are gone and we don’t have a tradedown option, …” Short of one of the big four QBs getting hit by a bus or Tunsiled, how can that happen? There’s only six picks ahead of us.

If the big three are gone a QB that someone (or more likely multiple teams) will covet, cherish and crave has to be on the board.

Let’s say Allen is there. There’s a psychological phenomenon that works in our favor. Let’s say you’re whoever among Miami, Buffalo, Washington, Arizona, New England, Jacksonville that didn’t trade down to two or four. As Darnold is picked. “Ahhh. He was too stupid.” Mayfield. “Too short.” Rosen. “Too flaky.” “Allen is the guy I would have picked if I’d been Cleveland. And he’s there at 7, call the Bucs before someone else does.” Even if only one team thinks that QB4 is the best guy. They don’t know that they’re the only ones who absolutely adore the guy. They think they have to outbid several other teams.

One more time for the people who failed third grade math. There are only six picks ahead of us. The big three plus the four top QBs equals seven. There is absolutely no indication that any of the QBs is falling off. There’ll be a ton of smokescreen out there. If I was Arizona and I didn’t have the draft capital to trade with anyone below the Bucs, I’d be telling everyone that QB_X is terrrible, bad footwork, terrible posture at dinner, bipolar, whatever to hope QB_X was still there. You see this already. The Cleveland insiders now think Allen is the guy. But then you see articles literally titled:
“Why it would be a mistake to pick Allen First.”

  12. Joeypoppems Says:

I think if “the big 3” (I hate that nickname for them) are gone and there are no trade down offers worth taking, Derwin James will be a Buccaneer

  13. Buc4life Says:

Sherwin James would be great addition to this team. Need to have a partner to trade down which I don’t think will happen.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “2nd JOE – Draft the top cornerback on your board or Vita Vea.” I’m with 2nd Joe, assuming the top CB on Bucs’ board is Ward. Still think however that the biggest impact going forward would be Vea. Right now we have 2 excellent DTs (GMC & Allen) plus several capable of ‘filling in’ in specific situations. Injuries happen as we’ve seen, plus fewer snaps keeps DLinemen fresher. Not to mention that we need to be grooming GMC’s replacement now.

  15. Not there yet Says:

This sounds a lot like doing the cowboys a big favor so I don’t think so unless they are getting like 3 picks this year and a second next year.

  16. Winter Says:

Let’s train Desean Jackson to them for a 3. We don’t need Winston trying to force DS the ball all year.

  17. Winter Says:

    Trade not train

  18. Pickgrin Says:

    Joe 1 Says:
“If the big 3 are off the board….Probably reach for Marcus Davenport or Sony Michel.”

wow – just… wow. really? Davenport at 7??? Puff, puff, pass bruh. That’s got to be some good stuff. Same strain that was circulating about this time 4 years ago when you were all in on Johnny Rehab I’m guessing…..

  19. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe if Jason Licht is going to call anyone it should be the New England Billicheats or the Bills. Both of those teams have 2 picks in the 1sr,2nd, and 3rd.rounds.what do we benefit in getting a trade from Dallas unless they give up Ezekiel Elliot.

  20. Pickgrin Says:

That picture is a classic btw. Never gets old. Nice caption underneath as well.

  21. Ludicrous Speed Says:

Since nobody discussing this (including Joe) seems to understand it, the proper value of the #7 pick would be Dallas’ 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th & 6th picks. Anything less than that would be the Bucs getting taken to the cleaners. Even with that, the Bucs would be giving up a blue chip rated player for just a bunch of guys (which the Bucs already seem to have in spades). Personally, moving down to #19 to pick a guy with a 2nd round grade instead of picking one of the top rated prospects in the draft seems pure madness. And now Joe is even talking of (if unable to trade down) reaching for a player @ #7 with a 2nd round grade (trying to fill positional needs, which is what bad teams do and is why they stay bad).

  22. mog2010 Says:

Dodgy pic Joe, Jerry has just went up in my estimation

  23. Bird Says:

Jerry has some serious foreplay moves

  24. darin Says:

Grab anything Jerry. From 19 to 7 should hopefully net their 1st, 2nd and 3rd or 4th. Not quite the falcons jump for Julio but i think they gave up 6 picks. I’m hoping for a trade down, and a bidding war for it. Adding 2-3 picks in this draft would be huge. Think Dline in the first still. No way this Dline is good enough yet. Or Oline.

  25. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Hey Joe is that Trumps woman with Ole Jere???? If so, That woman is going to be rich…..er than Jerry and the Donald!!!!!!

  26. Leighroy Says:

If for some mind boggling reason the Bucs can’t trade back, they should either take Vea or reach for Davenport, who have both been mocked in the top 10 at times. I don’t believe on investing in DBs w out a good d-line, same as investing in RBs w out a good o-line.

Case in point, name a player from the Panthers secondary the past 3 years since josh Norman left? You (probably) can’t, but their front 7 has carried that defense to an elite level.

  27. Ludicrous Speed Says:

Wow. People just don’t pay attention at all. Just a few posts ago I told you that the #7 pick is equal to Dallas’ 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th & 6th picks. ALL OF THEM. Do you get it yet, because I really get the feeling that you don’t.

  28. Kobe Faker Says:

“Hey Blondie, can you circumcise my mosquito”

    Jerry Jones

  29. gotbbucs Says:

Joe #1 need never post a comment about the draft again.

  30. Jeremy Says:

I don’t understand this post. Maybe trade DJax for a 3rd if they are willing otherwise we need talent at 7, best available

  31. Tackleblockwin Says:

We are sitting just fine at #7. There will be a good player there for us. I say hold onto our first rd pick to see what offers come in on draft night for a trade down scenario. If nothing comes our way through trade, there is always a chance one of the big 3 fall to us. Sometimes, crazy things happen on draft night.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Better idea…trade Jackson to Jones for a third. That way we stay at 7 to eith pick or work another trade.

Because Jackson is not going to pay off in Tampa.

  33. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Ludicrous Speed

You are discounting the Cowboys bartering picks from next year’s draft.

  34. BucEmUp Says:

Trade them Desean Jackson. He would be good with dac. Get anything you can for him..

  35. StPeteBucsFan Says:

If we don’t get one of the three I do not want a DB I’d be happy with reinforcing our DL…can we really get too much talent on our DL….Davenport would be OK but I perfer Vea. A couple of things you simply cannot coach…speed and size…Vea has freakish size and strength and he’s still raw with a ton of upside.

    JOE

“Shoot, perhaps Licht might catch Jones on his third Johnny Walker Blue of the afternoon and could just rake in a haul.”

You picked the perfect picture to illustrate that point. LMAO

Although I swear those eyes are gone! Look like he smoked one too many bowls to me.

  36. Roy T. Buford Says:

This is intrigueing. Not so much trading picks with Dallas, but trading picks with anyone who wants a premeir WR. That is, I am betting about the time overall pick 4 is done, a bunch of WR-needy teams are going to suddenly see the guy they want as getable, and THEN they will be hot to trade, and who knows, they may even over pay the Bucs, maybe instead with a 2nd or 3rd and 5th. Hopefully Jason has a bunch of offers loaded and he’s just got to pull the trigger.

What is the nicest thing about this? The Bucs don’t need a WR. Awesome.

  37. JGhoti86 Says:

    @ Joe,

    Are you high (or drunk)?!

Swap first round picks…move from 7 to 19 for a 3rd round pick? A THIRD round pick?! You’re losing it or not thinking clearly here on thispost. That’s inside and ludicrous

  38. Alanbucs Says:

I do not understand why so many people want to trade Desean Jackson. It’s as if he caught no passes last season. I’ve always said even before he was a buccaneer that Desean is not a number one receiver but a really number 2 and compliment to add speed that we need overall in this offense. People just think emotionally instead of logically about this.

  39. Bnomo Says:

Trade if top 3 picks are gone.

    Take their 1st, 2nd, 3 or 4, but get 3.

Even better, their 1st this year and next, tho Bucs need help NOW.

  40. Dave Says:

@Alanbucs the reason we want to trade DeSean Jackson is because we already have massive receiver weapons. We have a young WR who is ready to take that next step. We have two stud TE’s and so many other weapons for Winston. DeSean is a good receiver but he’s expensive and won’t be here after this year. Honestly, he’s too much for our needs. The only reason I could see why the Bucs would keep him is Jason and Dirk are so afraid for their jobs that the ‘WIN NOW AT ALL COSTS’ mentality is trumping the smarter team move to get some value for a good, but redundant, player.

  41. Easy Says:

Draft Mayfield at 7 and trade Winston to Arizona for their 15th, 2nd rounder and a first next year

  42. SOEbuc Says:

Jerry Jones is the Donald Trump of the NFL. Except Jerry makes better business moves.

JOE #1 … Marcus Davenport or Sony Michel at #7? If Licht drafts Sony Michel at #7 he should be FIRED INSTANTLY … if he drafts Davenport, it is what it is; I won’t be happy but whatever … but Michel? NO!!!!!!!!

JOE #2 … Top CB or Viti Vea at #7? I wouldn’t be thrilled with either and I’d be happier with Denzel Ward than Viti Vea, but I could live with either I guess.

Again, Sony Michel … at #7 … wow, I mean, wow … NOOOOOO!!!!!!!

    EASY,

    TRADING JAMEIS???????????

If you want to trade Jameis, there are better teams to trade with than the Cardinals and better QBs to draft than Mayfield.

You could trade Jameis to the Browns for #1 and more and then draft Sam Darnold, the white Jameis.

You could trade Jameis to the Jets for their entire 2018 draft and maybe a pick or two next year as well.

You could trade Jameis and Sweezy to the Dolphins for Tannehill and their #11 pick and a bunch more picks and then move Tannehill to a 3rd team.

You could trade Jameis and DJax to the Ravens for Joe Flacco and their entire 2018 draft and probably a couple extrqa picks next year.

You could trade Jameis and DJax to the Jaguars for Bortles, their entire 2018 draft and maybe even their entire 2019 draft … seriously.

AND, ALL of the above teams are in the AFC so you could easily trade Jameis out of conference … if you didn’t mind trading him within the NFC you could also consider trading him to the Giants, Cardinals, Redskins and Bears, all of whom would be interested I believe.

HOWEVER, the Bucs have ZERO interest in trading Jameis unless it’s for Aaron Rodgers and a pick or two imho … and yes, I’m 100% serious.

I honestly believe the ONLY QB in the entire league that the Bucs would even consider swapping Jameis for straight up is Aaron Rodgers. They definitely wouldn’t swap Jameis for old guys like Brady, Brees, Big Ben or Rivers, nor would they swap him for guys who are still in their prime but also older than Jameis like Matt Stafford, Matt Ryan, Derek Carr, Carson Wentz, Dak Prescott, etc. Nor would they swap him for younger guys like Goff, Watson or Trubisky.

Other than Rodgers, who I believe the Bucs would eve require a pick or two to be included with Aaron, the Bucs would demand either a high pick or multiple picks along with any of those other QBs if they were trading Jameis.

  45. firethecannons Says:

be good with trading Jackson for a 3rd and his salary

@7 with the big 3 off the table and cannot trade down, take Davenport or Minkah

  46. BringBucsBack Says:

If the big three are gone and no trading partner surfaces, draft a quarterback hold him hostage and force a trade-down.

If Jackson went anywhere, chances are that that quarterback can hit him on a deep pass. It seems that J-miss is the only quarterback that can’t seem to find Jackson on a deep pass.

  47. bucs_365 Says:

The idea of drafting Marcus Davenport at 7 is moronic. The dude is a project. And there are doubts about him. Also, another local Bucs publication says Davenport did not interview well with the Bucs and they’re turned off. Even so, Davenport isn’t even close to being worth #7… Michel either. This is more D3 K emper nonsense… pretty clueless…

[Guess you had to learn the hard way. Warnings didn’t work. — Joe]

  48. Roy T. Buford Says:

I am not for trading DJax, but so far, it’s proven that Jameis can’t hit him. The whole reason for getting him was he was supposed to stretch the D, take the top off of them, and give Jameis the long ball explosive TD. Maybe he stretched the D a bit to give Mike Evans and OJ and even Hump more room. But I’ve not done or seen any real analysis on that. He definitely hasn’t taken the top off the D and gotten big plays. And while I put some of this on Jameis, I also share it with the O line protection and DJax not doing voluntary workouts. In a nutshell, this year says a lot about JW’s accuracy…and if he can’t DJax again, JW need not complain about having deep targets or not.

  49. I Bleed Pewter and Red Says:

If the 3 coveted non QB’s are taken and we can’t find a trade down partner select the best QB on the board and offer as trade bait. If teams are not gonna wheel and deal with us because they assume we won’t take a QB anyway and they feel they can wait, throw a curve ball into the mix. Someone will want to wheel and deal then. Don’t just throw away the value of the 7th pick on a player of lesser value. Even though we don’t need a QB at least other teams may want to deal. That would be the smart thing to do. Taking a mid 1st round CB at 7 would be just throwing away the value of that 7th pick. Trust me someone will want to trade.
