Bringing “Joy” To Tampa Bay

April 13th, 2018

Elicits deep emotion.

The dynamic duo of ESPN Tallahassee is certain they know how to bring “joy” back to Bucs fans.

It begins with drafting Notre Dame guard Quenton Nelson. That’s the word from Jeff Cameron and Tom Lang of ESPN Tallahassee, speaking on “The Jeff Cameron Show,” a damn fine show that often talks Bucs football.

You may remember their excellent “ScuttleBucs” Podcast which Joe was proud to host last season. Both Cameron and Lang are Pinellas County natives and are Bucs fans to the core.

Yesterday, Cameron discussed the Bucs picking at No. 7 and in his eyes, the choice is clear for Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht: It’s Nelson. End of discussion.

“If Quenton Nelson is on the board and it is between Quenton Nelson and Saquon Barkley, it’s Nelson,” Cameron said. “If it’s Quenton Nelson and [Bradley] Chubb – we just got JPP – it’s Nelson. So that’s the end of that. These other two candidates ought not to be in the conversation.”

Now Cameron confesses he is teased by Barkley and admits it’s been way too long since the Bucs have had a dependable game-changer at running back, thus the thought of Barkley tearing up the turf at the Den of Depression against opponents is alluring.

But Cameron continues to go back to, well, it’s Nelson, who he is confident will bring unbridled enthusiasm to Bucs fans.

“It matters that [the Bucs] draft Nelson at No. 7 if he is there at No. 7,” Cameron said. “I am telling you – giddy. Production. All kinds of joy in our hearts watching NFL football Sundays with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this year if we get Quenton Nelson.”

Oh, and for Joe’s readers in the Panhandle, Lang announced that ESPN Tallahassee will broadcast Bucs games this fall.

$20 all-you-can-eat buffet kicks off at 6 p.m. and runs all night long. Be there!!

Nelson won’t get past Indy!!! GUARANTEED

  2. Pa Privateer Says:

I think Nelson is a wonderful pick if Barkley and Chubb are gone and there is no way to trade down.

However, Penn State did not have a top Offensive Line and Barkley did amazing things.

When I think of Barkley running behind Marpet and Jensen I get very excited.

Barkley lining up in the back field makes the entire offense a threat to score TDs every play (run/play action). Nelson does not do that every play.

  3. AlteredEgo Says:

Not getting my hope up for any of the Big 3…..

  4. BuccYa Says:

If Chubb and Nelson are there, I go with Chubb. Just because JPP is here now doesn’t mean our pass rush woes are over. I go back to the game JPP played against us last year. Didn’t really sell me on the premier pass rusher everyone has labeled him. Will he be an upgrade? HELL YES! Doesn’t mean the D-Line is now the strength of the team and can now be neglected.

  5. Capt.Tim Says:

Well, they may be Buc fans- but they arent football experts.
    RB is a playmaker.
Guard isnt, and the greatest guard who ever lived- only has limited impact on the game.
He can neutralize the DT in front of him.
Occassionaly he will be asked to run a sweep or a trap- and can neutralize a Safety or linebacker. Even if if hits 2 guys- still 9 left.

A great RB(And Barkley is an ELITE Rb) can make A DT, Miss, bounce of a LB, Run thru a safety-Then out run a CB and SCORE!!

Defenses have to account for a great RB. It requires them to assign assests to containing a Great RB.
Assests that have to moved from Pass defense.
That opens up the Pass offense

    Who would you prefer
    Barry Sanders or Steve Hutchinson.
    Who’s Steve Hutchinson? Exactly.

    Nelson is nowhere near Hutchinson
The media always overvalues Notre Dame Players
Will Hernandez will probably prove to be a better guard.

With the 7th pick- if you dont get a playmaker(QB,RB,WR,LT,DE,CB), then you’ve failed.
And this team has failed too often, grabbing the shinny pick, to do so again.

  6. Ludicrous Speed Says:

I’d love Nelson and I’d love Barkley. Top notch values, both of them. But check out what this analyst who was on with Mike Florio this morning specifically had to say about the Bucs #7 pick, and another top notch value: http://www.nbcsports.com/video/2018-nfl-mock-draft-40

  7. Capt.Tim Says:

Who were the starting Guards in our Superboml team?
Who were the Raiders starting Guards

Who were the starting Running backs?
    Bet you know that one

  8. Lamarcus Says:

U better get a another DE Licht. Stock up man. I prefer Davenport over Chubb.

  9. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Okay…so that’s “Jeff Cameron’s” opinion. Great. Jeff Cameron.

Can you imagine….for just a moment, the kind of Buccaneer season ticket holder fan base OUTCRY that would commence with such venom when hoping to separate them from their hard-earned dollars, …not to mention the NFL Media mockery and scrutiny to be endured in perpetuity through future player career reflection/comparison…., NOT TO mention Licht needing to explain to Team Glazer, why he felt that if Nelson and Barkley were there at #7, that Jason felt that a Guard were a better product for the immediate and future success of the Bucs franchise…..than SAQUON BARKLEY??!! Tiring.

    Sure.

    Jeff Cameron.

    Go Bucs!

  10. Ludicrous Speed Says:

And a lot of analysts prefer Landry over Davenport. Even more say that after Chubb, the rest of the defensive ends in this draft are just “other guys.”

  11. miken Says:

If it chubb shaq and nelson there (which it won’t be) , I think you have to go Chubb. Jason had to pick between Z Martin and Mike Evans and really wanted Martin but couldn’t pass on Evans probably won’t pass on Nelson. If all 3 are gone then I guess its between James and Ward.

  12. DB55 Says:

These other two candidates ought not to be in the conversation.”
    —————–
I’ve been saying this for weeks but wtfdik?

  13. Ludicrous Speed Says:

Ward shouldn’t, but some think James is the best defensive prospect in the draft and the smartest move for the Bucs @ #7. http://www.nbcsports.com/video/2018-nfl-mock-draft-40

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

People knowing RB names has a lot less to do with positional importance and more to do with it being a flashier more exciting position to watch than lineman. It doesn’t mean it’s more important.

OGs & RBs are valued about equally in terms of NFL Wages. Elite DEs are almost paid like QBs – which is why I’d go Chubb all day over the other 2.

Either way – would love Nelson + a RB round 2 if it goes that way. If we can’t score 28 + PPG at that point then Koetter failed massively

  15. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Bring Quenton Nelson to the BUCS!!!

    Yeah Baby!!!

  16. Marine Buc Says:

We need a running back, safety, corner and offensive line. Trading down would be our best chance to improve this team.

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

I understand comparing Quenton Nelson to Alan Faneca, Logan Manking, and even HUTCH

But comaring Barkely to Barry ……LMFAO.
Gotta be some strong dank there Timmy.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Wow….what a problem to have….picking from Chubb, Barkley, Nelson……or any combination……or entertaining a trade down for more picks….I’m in the trade down club…..I also thing none of the big three will be there at 7….they are that good at their respective positions.

I’d like Davenport, Hernandez Guice and a CB out of the first two rounds….to do that we need a trade with Buffalo.

  19. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    L.C

    Quenton + Guice

    or

    Quenton + Jordan Howard

    Good Lawd

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

    LUV- Barry Sanders=GOAT.
It’s a tough call because you have “instant offense” with Barkley. One thing to consider though, is that the longevity of a OG far exceeds that of a RB.
I wouldn’t want to make that pick between the two and I have a feeling we won’t have to.

    Nelson+Guice! That’s nice!
LUV- Are the Bears shopping Howard?

  21. Bucballbaby84 Says:

So far sweezy has been worthless to his contract. With all his injuries it’s time to find a trade partner or let him go. Getting Nelson will give us what we were missing at the guard position. We all would love to get to the playoffs but wouldn’t building a team to be a playoff team be better? Will definitely help us in the long run guys. Some ppl are in win now mode. I say we already waited 10 years so what’s a few more gonna hurt to build a DYNASTY! It starts in the trenches! Go Bucs! If Nelson is not there then I’d move back and find a way to get will Hernandez. The more you keep your defense off the field the fresher through the game they will be. Protect Jameis and help them to keep the offense on the field longer.

  22. uckinator Says:

You’ll get nothing for Sweezy in a trade. Some team might pick him up after he’s been released.

  23. NOSBOS Says:

This should be the absolute highest name on these folks draft board. Acquiring him should be done by any means necessary.

  24. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Bucsfanman

    Yup

    NOSBOS

    WTF U been Bruh?

  25. Bucsfanman Says:

Rhetorical question: Would you trade your 4th round pick for Jordan Howard?

Yeah NOSBOS, where you been?! You in “time-out” with tmax?!

  26. gotbbucs Says:

I’m not saying draft Barkley over Nelson or vica-versa, but those of you beating your chest for Barkley need to actually go look at his stat lines through his college career.
He might be the most inconsistent runner I’ve ever seen that is getting this much hype. He’s a very confusing prospect in my eyes.

  27. NFLNut Says:

I love Quenton Nelson and Saquon and I think that would be an incredibly hard pick for Licht to make either way …

As for Nelson not getting past Indy … if there is still one of the top 4 QBs on the board at #6, Indy would be stupid not to trade down to a team that wants that 4th QB, so there is definitely a possibility Nelson is available at #7

  28. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

didn’t know they were shopping howard….he’s the big physical back we need….

    I want nelson…..I want guice or sony…..and I want scarbrough late…..

if licht can get howard for a 6th round pick, then we don’t need scarbrough….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  29. Phil Says:

I would take Barkley, Chubb, or Ward over Nelson. While I like Nelson as a player he’s not going to be the difference makers for our team like the other guys would.

  30. 813bucboi Says:

    bucsfanman

    I wouldn’t…a 6th yeah….rather use that 4th on defense….

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  31. Bucsfanman Says:

813- BUT, you take all the guess work out of drafting a prospect for a sure 1,000 yd rusher. Do we know for sure Michel, Chubb, or anyone not named Barkley are going to be as good?
    If we’re willing to use a 2nd on a back, isn’t a 4th a bargain?
    Hypothetically speaking, of course!

  32. darin Says:

    Reality43
You havnt watched enough drafts if you’re guaranteeing draft predictions. Dont buy the media hype. Theres multiple surprises every year. I wouldnt be surprised one bit if indy goes McGlinchey over Nelson. I would be surprised if they dont go Oline tho. Wont guarantee a thing about the draft tho. If i knew i wouldnt watch.

  33. go for the face30 Says:

“Will Hernandez will probably prove to be a better guard.”

lol…Because some Jabroni named Captain Tim says so.

  34. Pickgrin Says:

Nelson is a STUD. Best and likely “safest” prospect in this draft. His position is not considered a “premium” position – but the player is about as blue chippy as they come.

  35. Ranman Says:

Saw Barkley play this year against Ohio State which apparently most of you didn’t. Reminded me of the same dance moves I saw every week with Martin.

I also saw a team win the SB with Foles as their freaking QB because of a strong O line. I get some want sexy. I’d much prefer the protection needed up front –

  36. 813bucboi Says:

    bucsfanman

    you right….its a crap shoot….

I guess that’s why licht gets paid the big bucks….lol…

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  37. The Graham Tram Says:

I’d like to get DE now to start developing them.

I don’t get the idea of having an explosive, ball-control offense. That sounds like an oxymoron. We won’t be competitive if we keep only adding pieces on offense.

We have to start building a defense. Chubb or trade downnnn (DE,CB, RB)

  38. unbelievable Says:

A running back is only as good as the offensive line in front of him.

  39. Cobraboy Says:

    Dynasties start in the trenches.

  40. unbelievable Says:

    ^ Exactly!

Build the trenches, build a champion.
