A Defensive Tackle?

April 23rd, 2018

Canes DT on Bucs radar?

Now this is something different.

There are a few guys out there that boast accurate mock drafts. Mike Mayock of NFL Network is one of them.

Then there is this guy from USA Today who last year had the most accurate mock draft in the free world. His name is Joe Marino.

Joe gets into it with the mockers, often at the combine. They scoff at accuracy rates, probably because theirs suck out loud each year? (It reminds Joe of a couple of years ago. Todd McShay got two picks right in his mock and BSPN charges people for that tripe. As the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo said about McShay and his inaccurate mocks, “I wouldn’t urinate on it much less pay for it!”).

The mockers get all haughty with Joe and sniff that mocks are not meant to be accurate. Then what the hell is the point?

If accuracy is that trivial, why should Joe believe anything a guy types? It is a total and complete waste of Joe’s time if someone doesn’t give a damn if they are accurate or not much less striving to be accurate.

So Joe was looking at this guy Marino’s breakdown of Bucs needs in this week’s draft. (This week!) And very interestingly, he has defensive tackle as a big need, following only running back. Marino doesn’t list offensive line as a need at all for the Bucs — in a perverse way, Joe will enjoy the outrage that will spark.

[Beau] Allen should fit in well alongside Gerald McCoy but the overall rotation is incomplete.

And Marino has a few defensive tackles he believes fit the Bucs. One is Miami defensive tackle Kendrick Norton.

Joe did a bit of pecking on the keyboard about this Norton and shoot, he isn’t even the best defensive tackle prospect in the draft from his own school.

Norton is thought to be a Day 3 draft pick.

If defensive tackle is that big of a need, why wait until the third day to draft at that position?

Anyone else unable to get the link to work?

  3. BigBucFan11 Says:

While I’d love the pick, I just don’t see Michel being there at 38. It feels too good to be true.

  4. Maddognavy Says:

I think I am the only Buc fan who still wants Vea at 7. He will eventually be McCoys replacement. He will be a hell of an add, and the back end wont look as bad once they have pressure on the QB. But what do I know I am just a fan lol

  5. Maddognavy Says:

Michel will be gone the first day, we’ll be lucky to get Chubb if the don’t pull any shenanigans with a trade or what have you

  6. Joe Says:

Anyone else unable to get the link to work?

    Both just worked for Joe.

  7. Rick Says:

@LMB, I doubt Sony is there either for us at #38, but that’s ok with N.Chubb and that interior Oline blasting holes open and protection for J I’m one of the happiest guys on the planet because the team I worked 5 seasons (only left to be in Colorado for much cooler weather) will finally have stop notch and balanced offense. I like your vision and would be ecstatic over that draft scenario to come to fruition.

  8. Rick Says:

    A top notch

  9. Pickgrin Says:

CB, RB and OG are bigger “needs” as we are missing legit starters at those spots – thankfully all are relative strengths of this draft. Its a good DT class as well though.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see the Bucs take a DT at any point in the draft other than at #7. Have to start bringing younger guys in up front and its not a good crop of DEs so we need one good developmental guy at the very least from the solid class of DTs this year. Draft 2 DEs next year – there will be more and better to choose from.

  10. Josh Says:

I will be upset if we trade up or draft Quentin Nelson. Our o-line is not that bad. Our passing offense was top 5 in the NFL last year, with Jameis out for 3 games! But our defense was DEAD LAST. We have made virtually no moves, if any at all, to bolster our secondary. Brent Grimes isn’t getting younger. We need Minkah or Derwin, immediate impact players who will help with the WORST passing defense and the WORST 3rd down defense in the NFL last year!

I would not be mad if we got Saquon at 7 though. That man is a beast, and the current state of our running game leaves something to be desired.

OG, DB, OT, RB, DB, DT…

  12. Defense Rules Says:

@Marino … “Allen should fit in well alongside Gerald McCoy but the overall rotation is incomplete.” Solid conclusion & that’d be a decent reason to draft a DT reasonably high this year by itself. But more importantly, Bucs need to add some youth to both DT & DE group. Starting that DLine youth movement this year (strong DT class) makes sense.

However, Bucs have greater immediate starting NEEDS … RB, OL, CB & to a slightly lesser extent, SS. Not counting on either Sweezy OR Dotson to contribute much (if at all), so TWO OLinemen (G & T) are really NEEDED. Those NEEDS should probably take priority if we expect to be competitive this year in the NFC South.

Not at all interested in drafting Norton. Last year was a sophomore with 2 years starting, but last year wasn’t as good as 2016 IMO. Best comment on Norton: “Norton should have returned to school, but he entered the 2018 NFL Draft.” B-I-N-G-O !!! (Same mistake far too many make IMO).

  13. mog2010 Says:

If we draft Nelson, where does that leave big Ali. The Bucs are unlikely to commit that amount of cap space on interior oline.

  14. Realbucfan941 Says:

    @ maddognavy

Why the hell would a340lb nose tackle be a replacement for McCoy at the 3 technique position in a 4-3? Can you explain that to me please??!

  15. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

I find it hilarious that Mel Kiper doesn’t appear in the top 100 for either list.

Man I wish I could get a paid a ridiculously high salary to be a complete fraud and suck at my job.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    OG, RB, CB, S

    Those are the needs…..

  17. Stanglassman Says:

Even though Vea lined up primarily as a nose tackle, he also played some three-technique, 4i and even five-technique in the four games I watched. He showed himself to be very capable at getting pressure from all of those spots.

Any team that drafts him and doesn’t use him as a pass rusher would be some damn fools because if he can’t do anything else, one thing I’d bet my last on is that Vea will be able push the pocket back into the quarterback’s lap consistently in the NFL just like he did in college.

  18. Buc4life Says:

Because he can’t replace McCoy. Vea could play next to McCoy but not take his position when McCoy is gone. If we don’t trade down James or Ward is the best pick if Chubb and Barkley are gone. I like Nelson but feel we can get about the same value with Hernandez or Wynn in the 2nd round. Fitzpatrick would be wasted pick because he plays safety like Evans or slot like Hargraves, so where should that leave them. James can play safety, stick Yes, help out over the top, or blitz and come in the box for run support. He is and impact player all over the field.

  19. Rrsrq Says:

Yeah I’m bias, because Canes are better pros than college players, most of the time, I would want R J McIntosh though or Chad Thomas for the edge, if Buckner is the guy we think he is, then the Bucs should be able get a diamond in the rough

  20. K_Bassuka Says:

Well I would say this, those DT from Miami used the Super Hall Of Famer Best Offensive Linemen Ever as a rag doll when they played Notre Dame, so eventually they should be ranked way higher than day 3. Just saying!

  21. NJBucsFan Says:

Mayock blows. Hes horrible on TV. Not one aspect of his story telling, play calling or analysis is entertaining and is often wrong.

  22. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @K_Bassuka

    *cough* fake news *cough cough*

  23. Alaskabuc Says:

    @LUVMYBUCS

Love the Siran Neal pick. I think that kid is a real diamond in the rough, and he would be be great next to Evans

  24. Bucsfanman Says:

Is it draft day yet?! I’ve got draftigue!

  25. Evolvingbucfan Says:

Seems alot of people still forget about STEVIE
TU’IKOLOVATU?? who should be able to play this year??

  26. Realbucfan941 Says:

Stan just because they moved him around doesn’t mean he fits the position. Beckwith rushed as an end for us in multiple games, should he be our new DE?
Vea made sense before free agency, not now. Under that thinking let’s draft best available center in round 2 since we used to need that position.. Or maybe Derwin to replace levonte David because many can say he could play lb and rushes the QB well… Just lame waste of a pick for vea

  27. Horse Liver Says:

DT is not that big of a need but if the BPA is there and he’s a DT, it’s not surprising to take him. But not the guy Marino (Dan’d love child?) thinks.

  28. Reality_43 Says:

    @ Bassuka

Just because Miami Beat the pants off of Notre Dame doesn’t mean Nelson got used as a RAG DOLL LMAO.

All the pressure Miami got was off of the RG and RT.
I did see a few missed plays in that game by Nelson as the whole OL was frantic about what was taking place.
They were completely outmatched by Miami whose DL looked awesome.

  29. K_Bassuka Says:

    @Blake and Reality

You guys clearly didn’t watch the game so no point in arguing. I was there and I clearly remember Nelson put on his back by McIntosh.

  30. Realbucfan941 Says:

Mcglinchey had a rough game too.

  31. Nate Says:

    @ Maddognavy

U aren’t…..shoot Vea might be the only sensible pick there @ 7…..

Which includes not reaching for a Patrick Peterson wannabe and a FL state poor man’s Jalen Ramsey just cause we lost out on him last year smh

Good taste I played ….for a very decent defensive team n if the big 3 aren’t there

The bucs better take Vea n live with it there is no prospect better than him there not even Minkah ugghh

  32. kenny Says:

derwin james, trade down 2nd rd get a 3rd rd pick
