Tyrann Mathieu Is On The Market

March 14th, 2018

Multiple Bucs ties

One of the most unique and talented — and young — NFL ballhawks is now available.

And yes, he’s more valuable than Ryan Smith and Vernon Hargreaves.

He’s the Honey Badger, aka Tyrann Mathieu. The Cardinals just waved goodbye to the 25-year-old freakish athletic hybrid safety and the nearly $18 million due him in 2018. It was reported that Mathieu refused a pay cut.

Mathieu worked alongside Bucs GM Jason Licht when he arrived in Arizona, and he was on the same defense with beloved Cardinals defensive line coach Brentson Buckner, who know has the same job for Tampa Bay.

If Mike Smith is the defensive genius the Bucs think he is, then there’s no way he wouldn’t be salivating right now for the Mathieu, a former teammate of Kwon Alexander at LSU.

The Bucs certainly have the money to make this bold play.

Please! Oh Please! Make this happen Licht!

  2. Joe Blahak Says:

MUST SIGN! …worthy investment, pay the man!…LSU East 🙂

  3. Rojas Says:

Sign Mathieu, and Jensen. Work on the Dline next.

  4. tmaxcon Says:

a move like this is completely against the glazer business model but would be welcome addition. this is the one potential free agent that I actually thought licht had a legit shot at. then it will be back to left overs, has beens, and injury prone gambles.

  5. Aristotle Says:

I can be for this one

  6. Brad Says:

Kwon has already been recruiting him. Make it happen

  7. Evolvingbucfan Says:

    DO IT !!!!

  8. pewterpirate99 Says:

Make it happen Licht, you putz!! Seeing how much sense it makes, watch Licht pass on him saying, “we’re good, we just signed the Tandy Man!”

  9. DB55 Says:

    Lololol

    #Tier3FreeAgents Only need apply.

If you’re a scrub who needs one more check before retiring you sign with Tampa Bay.

If you have any hope at all of ever winning a meaningful game than you sign with any of the other 31 teams.

Cheering for the Browns would be an upgrade at this point.

    😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

  10. Rod Munch Says:

Is he a scrub? No. Will he demand market value? Yes. Will ESPN give Licht a good grade on their FA report card if Licht has to over pay to get him here? No, they’ll give him a C- and he doesn’t want that.

    No deal.

  11. Brad Says:

TMaX this would be an injury prone gamble

  12. Costa Rica John Says:

Joe Thomas retires. That might help the Bucs bc now they need a LT at the top of the draft.

  13. Rojas Says:

Any news on Sheldon Richardson ? I haven’t seen anything.

  14. JJV Says:

Ain’t gonna happen. Not a Licht move. But it’s fun to imagine.

  15. mike10 Says:

As much as I’d like to see this, no way we fork over 15 mil for this guy..

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    Brad

yes, that is very ture that being said that is all the bucfans can hope for.

  17. JJV Says:

    Bingo!

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Guys I have some bad news.

The Colts haven’t done anything in free agency either – and based on my quick estimates they still lead the league in cap space. It’s going to be really tough for the Bucs to get that cap space trophy this year. Frowny face.

  19. lambchop Says:

The guy has never played a full season. He’s got 2 bum knees. He’s slower than he used to be and he’s only 25. Maybe he’s an upgrade over what we have, but for that kind of money would we be ok with a partial season? We aren’t turning into a perennial playoff team because we’re missing a safety. I have a feeling the Bucs will pass. I think I’d rather see a Suh/McCoy tandem. Might just uplift both their careers. At this point in their career, a Beau Allen could help keep em fresh.

I see a Minkah Fitzpatrick, Derwin James, or Denzel Ward at #7 anyway.

  20. Pierce Says:

With the relationships he has with our team we might have a chance at grabbing him.

  21. LakeLand Says:

The Honey Badger is a One Hit Wonder. He had one good season , got a fat contract and disappeared. And he refused to take a pay cut.

    lol

    The Bucs and these Bums

  22. DB55 Says:

Licht just re-signed Tandy and conte. What’s the point.

  23. Bucs55 Says:

He just tweeted he’s in Tampa lets go sign him up

  24. SRQBucsFan Says:

If Suh gets released too. Pull out the check book give me Suh, Honey badger, and Jensen. After which close the vault and put the rest of the focus on the draft. First three rounds you get BPA but at least 1 RB and 1 CB with the first 3 picks.

It’s a lot of money tied up on the D-Line but easily manageable with our salary cap space and the fact next year the caps get a boost and we can save money letting go of D-Jackson, McCoy (if needed), Ayers, among a couple other to sign Winston, Marpet, and Kwon.

  25. DanBucsFan Says:

Honey badger would be a very big acquisition. Give him a 3 year 45 million deal 20 guaranteed, that should do it and he would definitely be a leader on our defense. He is someone worth paying for. This could be a very big move, man hopefully if we do get him, he will turn some of the burnt out fans back to optimistic fans again.

  26. SRQBucsFan Says:

Like really, if we get him we are building the LSU D lol. Alexander, Beckwith, Mathieu.

  27. Phil Says:

If they sign Mathieu that would make up for the big nothing burger they have so far in free agency.

  28. Drew aka q Says:

Jason licht needs to be on the phone now … glazers need to be gassing up the plane… this will decimate the past couple days if they make this happen

  29. joestang Says:

SIGN HIM, ANOTHER LOSER THAT WILL COLLECT A PAYCHECK WHILE SITTING ON BENCH. YOU DIDN’T EVEN TRY TO SIGN MALCOLM BUTLER. GO TITANS

  30. TeddyTB Says:

I would love him but you’re almost guaranteed Fitzpatrick or Derwin available in the draft so IDK if it’s the best play to make. Maybe sign him then trade back or stay at 7 age try to get Ward. Jaire Alexander would be dope in the 2nd round

  31. Evolvingbucfan Says:

Just slip in a Performance clause if possible.

  32. Greg Says:

Makes sense according to the pattern of Jason light. We just drafted a free safety in the second round last year so obviously we need to waste that pic. I actually like Justin Evans and think he’s going to be a good safety. I also like the honey badger but there’s about a $16 million a year difference. Let’s use some sense here people

  33. LakeLand Says:

Next season when Marcus Mariota and the Titans are playing in the playoffs. While Jameis Winston and the Bucs are home watching them play. Bucs fans will be moaning about how Winston don’t have the running game, defense, coaching staff that Mariota have. But guess what…Jon Robinson have positioned the Titans to make a run in 2018.

    New coaching staff
    RB Dion Lewis
    CB Malcolm Butler

These same fans will be bragging on Jason Licht

    Sucksville, USA

  34. Joseph Mamma Says:

Wait who is the genius that thinks mike smith is a defensive genius?

  35. lambchop Says:

Just slip in a starting lineup clause.

  36. El_Buc941 Says:

Sign him asap!!this will resolve the safety position for years to come!!!

  37. SCBucsFan Says:

Honey Badger says he isn’t coming until morale improves on this board

  38. gbobucsfan Says:

Been reading a lot of Cardinals fans’ comments, they all agree that he isn’t worth that much money. Some say he lost 2 steps since being injured. Of course, that’s what you need to say once a player leaves, but anywho.

  39. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Can he play starting outside corner, defensive end, defensive tackle and running back?

  40. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

bucs missed out on a 2nd tier corner in patrick robinson as he is signing with new orleans, someone wake jason gump up

  41. lambchop Says:

PFF conveniently has Barkley sliding down to pick #7. I wet myself.

  42. LakeLand Says:

CB Bashaud Breeland is signing with Carolina.

  43. SRQBucsFan Says:

Starting to notice Lakeland just seems to be a Pats fan wants Pats retreads. Lewis? Butler? both are system guys who the pats put in a position to succeed. Hey how many players left New England as “top tier” F.A. and made massive impacts on their next teams??

  44. Todd Says:

Jason is scared of free agency after he misses the playoffs all 5 of his years as gm here he will sell the glazers on I have be smart with contracts look at all our cap space

  45. tmaxcon Says:

  46. Mike Johnson Says:

Something about that kid Mathieu. Kinda reminds me of John Lynch the way he hits. He has a nose for the ball and always makes big plays in a game. BUTT..he does stay injured. Might not be a good investment. But you cannot deny he gives his all and plays hard.

^^^No truer words were spoken on this day. Why is it that non-bucs fans know more about this team this bucs fans?!

  49. Tampabaybucfan Says:

One of the problems here….and I’m not complaining, just explaining……is Joe constantly parading out a multitude of potential signers. And, of course, we aren’t taking them. It’s sort of like being a diabetic and having the dessert tray rolled in front of you.

  50. Pickgrin Says:

Would love to have Honey Badger – but not at the price he will likely demand.

If he would agree to 2 years – $8M per base with performance incentives up to $11M and only 1st year guaranteed (similar to Grimes but $1M more and with a 2nd year option) I think he could be worked into the fold.

That is probably the top end we could/should afford for this player. He’ll probably get offered more somewhere else.

  51. tmaxcon Says:

    derrickbrooksforGM

you don’t have much credibility when you are pimping an unqualified has been for gm…. living in a failed past must be very depressing.

  55. LakeLand Says:

And Mike Vrabel want system players in Tennessee. You need a good system and good players to fit the system. The Bucs don’t have a system. Dion Lewis and Malcolm Butler will fit Vrabel system.

  57. tmaxcon Says:

    lakeland

the bucs don’t have a plan, a system or players.

  58. TrollSlayer Says:

per Scott Reynolds @ Pewter Report

Tampa Bay started the 2018 season with $71 million in salary cap room. Mike Evans’ extension will cost the team an extra $5 million because he was already on the books for $13.2 million due to his fifth-year option. That brought the Bucs down to $65 million. The one-year contract for cornerback Brent Grimes is $7 million per year, as is the 2018 cap value for Cameron Brate’s new deal. That brings Tampa Bay’s available cap space to about $51 million.

Wide receiver Adam Humphries’ $2.914 million one-year tender and the combined salaries for restricted free agents running back Peyton Barber ($630,000), cornerback Javien Elliott ($630,000) and linebacker Adarius Glanton ($1.04 million) total another $5.214 million. That leaves Tampa Bay’s cap space at approximately $45.786 million.

The Bucs will need to leave about $6 million for the rookie salary pool and at least $4 million for in-season injury replacements, and Tampa Bay would like to extend the contracts of middle linebacker Kwon Alexander, offensive lineman Ali Marpet and left tackle Donovan Smith before the start of the season as each is entering a contract year. The team would rather pay a good deal of money now than pay more later when 2019 free agency draws near. The Bucs will have to earmark about $30 million for those extensions.

The reality is that Tampa Bay only has between $15-16 million in cap space to operate with heading into free agency. That’s enough to sign a top-tier player or two, in addition to a couple of moderately price players, but that’s it. Don’t expect an avalanche of signings this week as a result.

Licht and director of football administration Mike Greenberg are also mindful that another wave of free agency will occur in nearly month right after the draft, followed by a third wave of free agency when roster cuts occur in September prior to the start of the season. That’s when the Bucs spent $3.875 million to sign safety T.J. Ward last year – a move that ultimately didn’t pay off.

The Bucs can free up an additional $6 million by releasing defensive end Robert Ayers prior to March 18 when he is due a $1 million roster bonus, which is part of the $6 million cap charge he has for 2018. Tampa Bay can also clear about $4.5 million by releasing oft-injured guard J.R. Sweezy. So there could be a safety net of an additional $10.5 million worth of cap space that the Bucs can use if it can find upgrades at defensive end and guard in free agency and decide to move on from Ayers and Sweezy.

so those who keep thinking we have all this cap money just floating around and can sign every top tier player needs to investigate better we have all of our young cornerstone pieces we need to re-sign this year and next year which will command ALOT of money so reality is will probably get one top tier guy and a few value guys look for the draft to be more exciting than free agency

  59. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    lambchop Says
“Trent Murphy to Bills. Bills was the surprise 3rd team bidding I’m guessing.”

^^^ LOL Let’s pretend we have a competent GM and coaching staff that’s not mailing it in this year… cause next year is buh bye time. Glazers are being smart they are signing the must have no mistake guys and the rest to 1 year contracts… they want to leave enough space for the next GM to make some moves for the new coaching staff and not hancuffing them with expensive FA’s that may or may not fit the next administrations plans.

it is so ridiculous you fools worrying about money when the bucs are the reason there is a minimum salary cap in the first place not too mention all the CARRIED cap space each year. the bucs not spending and the glazers piss poor leadership has render Tampa the least desirable location in NFL…

but you low standard fans love you some career losers that we have. you get excited when bucs resign all the bums we have been losing with then fear cap trouble. so so very stupid….

  65. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Reverse Joe…

“lost” Murphy?!?!? How about AVOIDED Murphy…whew. And yes, overpaid to keep him from Patriots is what the Bills did.

    Go Bucs!

  66. AlteredEgo Says:

tmax makes more sense as time goes on….fine whine…

  67. SCBucsFan Says:

TrollSlayer stop with the facts. Its easier to complain if you believe we have 80M to sign FAs. If you say it often enough you make it your own personal reality.

  68. tmaxcon Says:

Steelers have been in CAP HELL for 10 years and have managed 2 super bowls…. obviously the bucs are completely incompetent and should never be used in the same post as an organization that can mange, develop and compete year in and year out… and OH MY GOD manage the cap!! with actual stars… bucs have 3 stars winston, evans and kwon… everyone else is replaceable garbage and kwon is borderline.

  69. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @TrollSlayer

Scott Reynolds is a little off on his numbers. The draft picks can take 8-12 million, depending on movement and position. We’re currently at 7th…placing us in the $9m range.

After the draft deduction, we’ll have around $33-36m left.

He’s also off on several other figures…and his claim that the Bucs want to extend the contracts of middle linebacker Kwon Alexander, offensive lineman Ali Marpet and left tackle Donovan Smith before the start of the season are guess work at best. And Reynolds often gets his guesses wrong.

Marpet is still new to his position. Smith is coming off his best year, but still is not proven. And Alexander has Beckwith waiting in the wings to take his place if they lose him or he does not work out.

The Bucs should be in no rush to extend those three without another year behind them.

Keith Tandy was just re-signed as well, and though his numbers won’t be large, they will bring it down slightly.

I would guess at around…maybe…$31-34m left atm. That’s to the cap. They do not have to spend all of that.

  70. Lord Cornelius Says:

Would he play SS then and Evans be the FS?

He played most his snaps at SS / nickle CB in Arizona. He’s not an outside CB as far as I know which imo is more of what we need.

Then again he’s a baller and 26 so i’d be happy about it lol

  71. TrollSlayer Says:

we could sign a bunch of guys this free agency but then possibly lose out on the pieces we have to build around im sure more would be pissed if we lost names like kwon, ali marpet, and even jameis winston all because our fans wanted us to make all these free agency splashes which is a crapshoot to begin with especially since its obvious that licht is a better draft builder than free agency builder this is just how the current regime operates at least they are looking to the future and keeping the pieces we drafted the downfall is it may be another season or so before we really start contending and yes it may cost the current regime some jobs but i think licht sticks around at the very least as he has kept our cap from sinking into dead weight hell, and for the most part his drafting has been a success

  72. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

You know, the lame duck claim being made about Licht? And Koetter? They are sure not acting like they are that. In fact, they are acting like everything is under control.

  73. tmaxcon Says:

this organization can’t even field a respectable team that does not embarrasses itself weekly and you complete and utter idiots are worrying about the cap and not talent…. nothing dumber

  74. lambchop Says:

    TrollSlayer,

71M cap and Mike Evans extra 5M against cap makes 65M. I’m still wondering why simple math is not so simple. I guess cuz the source is Scott Reynolds. 🤔

  75. Greg Says:

SECONDARY DOESNT MATTER WHEN WE CANT PRESSURE THE QB!!!!! Redskins DE goes to Buffalo. When it comes to talent, we have no hope to compete.

  76. TrollSlayer Says:

im no expert i just go off what the reporters and analysts write about these guys know more about it than we do or wed be the ones working at one buc and on such staffs as JBF, pewter report, and other sites i was a lil disturbed myself with the non-activity in free agency until i researched a bit more chances are this season we will not be playoff contenders so why bust the bank now when we can look to the future that will probably be brighter if we at least extend contracts to the pieces in place we are building around

Also see “astroturfing” (aka a fake grass-roots movement)…

  89. Issic haggins Says:

I will be floored if the h badger gets anywhere the kind of money you guys are talking ……….. the plus he was the best returner in college football but he is a 5 foot 8 safety with a small frame that has already been damaged a bit . If he goes north of 10 mil I would be surprised . I don’t think he gets 6 from most teams . Like the guy , he is very talented but the last thing the Bucs need is to get smaller in the d backfield !!! I would rather sign Gaines and Robinson then draft d James

  90. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I now believe it is very possible that the Glazers deliberately are setting up next year for failure…..they didn’t want to fire Koetter & Licht (the two year coaching churn is taking it’s toll.)
    So here is the plan:
    Retain all assistants.
Resign all the good young players.
Keep all draft picks….this year and next.
    Maximize the cap for 2019.
    Maintain the option on Winston

These moves will probably win Tampa a high draft pick in 2019…..and consequently make Tampa a more attractive coaching location.

All this makes some sense if you have little faith in your coaches….some faith in your GM’s draft selections and concern over Winston’s suspension and future.

Anywho most of people on this board are like women on their period – just yesterday half you dolts were worried about the salary cap, now you’re back to the Glazers are cheap. It’s quite amusing to see those wild swings the first 100x it happens, but it does get repetitive after a while.

He just doesnt fit the bill i would give that to Kwon perhaps but i do not think he is a locker room cancer he just doesnt have the demeanor to be the leader we need spark and attitude which are things he does not possess but he still does his job better than anyone else on the line.

GMAC i bet would look much better if he had a d-line around him worth a damn, yes he’s no warren sapp but hes consistently been one of the top 10 at his position year in and year out for me personally thats enough to keep around at least. a bright spot on an otherwise dismal and dark line

  108. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t get the Claiborne talk, the guy was a bust his entire career and now suddenly he’s not? I didn’t keep up on his career but a guy who is drafted highly and who finally has a good season in a contract year, those guys rarely end up doing much. If Claiborne signs that is very much a Licht type of signing, which will give the us Licht like results.

“they are acting like everything is under control.”

    Good observation Bonzai.

Bucs are approaching this FA period like they believe in “their” guys – they believe in their system – they believe in their plan to build largely through the draft and that it will work.

Pretty ballsy to “stay the course” from top to bottom and basically across the board – “sticking to the plan” – when the plan yielded 5-11 last year…

    They may well die trying.

On the other hand – How sweet it would be for this GM and this coaching staff to stick it in the face of every single naysayer out there when this team wins with their plan and their guys – and earns a playoff birth and contract extensions for all in 2018.

  115. Rod Munch Says:

Tampabaybucfan – I know the comment about OJ is said in jest, but why don’t we have 2-way players anymore? OJ literally has the size and speed you’d need from an end rusher, so why can’t you put him in on defense on 3rd down and say get to the QB. No learning the entire defensive playbook require, just get the QB. If you block guys, and OJ does, then you have to know what they do to do your job on offense – it’s why Raheem Morris is the WR coach in Atlanta despite always being a defensive minded guy.

I know you said it mockingly but I love the idea. Use your best athletes to make plays regardless of where they are on the field, and OJ is probably the best athlete on this team. Bring back the 2-way player.

precisely why they are going to be out of jobs this time next season.

  120. SteveK Says:

Sign some more players! Spend that cap!

  121. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Rod Munch

What makes you think I was joking?…..My source was Mark Dominick.

  122. Rod Munch Says:

I’m going to take a positive stance here just because…

So last year you can make the case the Bucs lost 3 games due to kicking, the Pats game, the home game versus Atlanta and the road game at Carolina. Those 3 games put the Bucs at 8-8.

The Bucs lost the game at Buffalo because Hump fumbled the ball – if he doesn’t the Bucs are now up to 9-7.

The Bucs last year were 4-1 versus teams under .500, but the issue is they played the hardest schedule in the league and for the entire season only played 5 games versus teams with losing records, it’s very unlikely they’ll have a schedule that hard yet again this season.

The Bucs in the regular season beat the same number of playoff teams as the Jags and Titans did.

The Bucs defense was 32nd in the league last year, that’s the first time in the history of the team they finished 32nd – it’s incredibly unlikely they’d pull that off twice in a row.

Finally the Bucs did all of this while losing their QB for much of the season with an arm injury. Yes Winston didn’t sit out that many games, but clearly his arm wasn’t there for much of the season.

So with some better kicking, a healthy Winston and a little bit of luck things can turn around quickly!

That’s there’s your positive scenario for keeping the course.

  123. Jman Says:

Spend it. They won’t have to pay a second qb contract. Tua 2020!

  124. BucFanFromOhio Says:

    @Rod Munch

I like your attitude! Not to mention another year in the same system maybe a couple guys “click” and play a little better/faster. Justin Evans should be a full time starter now too, so hopefully he plays better in his sophomore season.

  125. Rod Munch Says:

Tampabaybucfan – Interesting that Dom said that, it’s in interesting idea and there isn’t any real reason the Bucs shouldn’t try it. They won’t of course since the Bucs will never do anything under Dirk that is out of the norm, but man, they should give it a shot and see if OJ can do it or not.

  126. Guzziep Says:

If we add Honey Badger and Suh everyone would flip out and praise Licht even every single person who has bashed him these past few months, myself included

  127. SteveK Says:

Sign Suh! Sign Mathieu! trade Gerald for a 2!

  128. tmaxcon Says:

artwork of my choice of course

  132. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Rod

Dom didn’t say that….I was BSing…….but I do agree with you that there are certainly players who are capable of playing two positions and I’d love to see that happen with some of the best athletes in the league.

He’s not good, just draft Derwin at that point

  136. LongSeason Says:

Wait a minute. Let’s put on the brakes here. Tyrone is more than a quality player. Tampa only signs a quality freed agent once in, well a fiery meteor strike. I’m hoping a meteor strike happens.

  137. tmaxcon Says:

    ^^^^ and my not thus

  138. Eric Says:

Instead of all of us complaining on these message boards we should boycott the Bucs the same way Licht boycotts adding GREAT players in free agency. If we don’t have a true Stud-homerun in free agency I will start the boycott myself. No more money or time will be devpted till they decide tp put a quality product on the field
    #BOYCOTT THE BUCS!

  142. AlteredEgo Says:

boycott…..if the NFL waits until after the draft for a “possible” discipline /suspension of Jameis……the whole stadium should be empty….back up ndog and webstir…..I said possible

  143. Rod Munch Says:

Tampabaybucfan – It actually sounds like something Dom would say someone told him, so that was some good fake news there, you should work for the St Pete Times. But yeah, bring back the two-way player.

BucFanFromOhio – I was just playing out the thinking of staying course, I don’t necessarily buy into it, but I can see the coaches telling themselves that kickers and injuries cost them the season.

  144. Kansas95Buc Says:

  147. Duke Says:

    Lambchop,

I don’t believe that you checked out your claim that TM never started a full season. Uhhhh….Last year He played in and started all 16 games. Being it was just 2 mos ago that the season ended you’d think that you’d get that right before spouting off. Typical Bucs Fan, rated as high as the team’s defense.

  148. Bucballbaby84 Says:

Jason Licht has better jump on his honey badger quick and sign him with the Bucs!
