Trumaine Johnson Update

March 12th, 2018

CBS Sports has info.

Good morning, Bucs fans. Hope this helps brighten an otherwise depressing Monday.

Of course, it sure would be nice if the Bucs could land a big-time cornerback in free agency this week as the dinner bell rings Wednesday with legal tampering beginning at noon today.

One name on the wish list of many Bucs fans is Trumaine Johnson, who announced Sunday he will not return to the Rams. And per the fingertips of heavy metal headbanging Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Bucs are indeed players for Johnson.

Teams like Green Bay, Tennessee, Tampa and Houston are doing a lot of work at the corner position; one of them is likely to land Trumaine Johnson and I have a hunch it may be the Texans, who badly need defensive upgrades after injuries and free-agent defections (A.J. Bouye) weakened that unit in 2017.

La Canfora also suggested not to discount cornerback Kyle Fuller of the Bears. Yeah, he was slapped with an expensive transition tag, but La Canfora’s NFL suits for contacts have told him Fuller is so good, and the position is so critical, that the Bears just might receive offers from several teams.

C’mon front office, let’s get this deal done. Provides an instant and much needed sparkk on defense and will also serve as a domino effect. In that it could help sway another FA or two to sign with us knowing ownership is serious about fielding a truly competitive team. Obviously would also help by giving us flexibility to spend more top picks on Dline. If not I stand by my thought process in loading up the offense (which is much closer to being a finished product)

  2. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Let Green Bay Have’em

    CB (Pick-Up Two or Three)
    -E.J. Gaines
    -Patrick Robinson
    -Ross Cockrell
    -Nickell-Robey-Coleman
    -Brent Grimes
    -Jonatha Joseph

    S
    -Kenny Vaccarro
    -Tre Boston
    -Morgan Burnett

  3. thunderchunkyPA Says:

We NEED a shut down CB, and there are CB’s out there to help this team NOW.
I would sign 2, since the quality is there.

  4. MadMax Says:

Alright LUV, sell me why not. Am i missing something? I know ive been out of the loop a little because of work but i thought he would be a good pick up…maybe i need to dig more….i know we’ve messed up in the past (eric wright) but he’s not “that guy”

  5. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

I hope so. Can’t we at least fill ONE need?

  6. JA Says:

Can’t wait for the “Licht sucks” and “cheap Glaziers” and “93 is cancer” and “fire Koetter” and ” the worst team in the history of sports” rants.
Whenever I need a humorous dose of miserable fans, spouting the same redundancies, I come here for a few hate-fest laughs as I cannot imagine why the haters don’t take their passions to another team.
I can only reason that you are not happy unless you are unhappy.

Come on haters…go ahead, make my day!

  7. MadMax Says:

Lol, JA looking in the mirror and projecting to everyone else…..na im good bro, im living and loving life just wishing my team can find a way to become winners….it all starts somewhere. But thanks for laughing at pissed off redundant fans…thats why we’re fans, gluttons for punishment maybe, but fans. Yeah, get yours 😉

  8. Dooshlarue Says:

tmax sleeps in on Mondays bro!

  9. Kalind Says:

I’d be fine w him. We need 2 more beyond him though. As Joe has mentioned, the draft holds no answers (despite being crazy deep at CB). They should still draft one, (trade Hargreaves?) to develop (lol) but they need 2-3 guys who can play right now. AND 2 DEs. They have some shopping to do.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

According to Tmax, he won’t come because of GMC…and if he does come he will fail because of GMC

  11. Maze Says:

Don’t F this up Jason. The best free agent available needs to go to Tampa.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m with you all the way MadMax….the doom and gloom posters are pathetic & I actually pity them.

  13. Bucsfanman Says:

What’s the going price on Fuller? I know I sound like a homer but the kid can play. Fuller>Johnson all day!
    It might be worth it.

  14. feelthepewterpower Says:

I’d love fuller but not for steep compensation. I’d like Johnson as well. Patrick Robinson would be solid, too. Id pass on Robey, Joesph, and Cockrell.

  15. feelthepewterpower Says:

And Grimes, I’d bring back, but not for top dollar. I think the only way he stays is if we franchise or outbid the other teams. I am OK for letting him walk. There is no guarantee that Grimes stays healthy all year considering his age.

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

FTP- What’s the asking price on him? He’s at least worth a 2nd, IMO.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If we aren’t going to have a pass rush….we should at least buy a couple of proven performers in the secondary…I don’t care if we overpay a bit…we desperately have the need.

  18. MadMax Says:

Just draft Chubb and Vita! Make all the moves you need to make to get it done Mr. Licht.

  19. MadMax Says:

    thanks TBBF!

  20. The Buc Realist Says:

If the Bucs are looking to save a little on his contract, Have incentives tied to yac!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! maybe that will stop the sitting down in the zone, catch and then fall down!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  21. The Buc Realist Says:

    Sorry fellas, wrong article!!!!!!!!

lots of CB to choose from, and then we will see a second wave from the draft. then their will be a third wave from cuts, from the teams that drafted CB’s!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Pickgrin Says:

Johnson is good but not great. Yet expects to be paid like he’s exceptional.

I would look elsewhere – plenty of other FA CBs to go after that will be much better values.

  23. LargoBuc Says:

I don’t want much from free agency but c’mon Bucs let’s get Trumain Johnson. Call up his agent and get them in Tampa for negotiations now!

  24. SCBucsFan Says:

God its nice to read threads on this site before the trolls wake up

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @SCBucsfan
Their Mothers let them sleep in

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    Malcolm butler…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  27. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Like this Bucs fan has been saying throughout this offseason, the Bucs should pursue Kyle Fuller. Could be had for a bit cheaper than Johnson, due to 2016 injury, a couple years younger and can be a bit more versatile when asked than just an outside man press CB.

And no broke-down washed-up hack “named” RB’s here please. Licht simply needs to risk it, and add Mr. Barkley as our clear-cut RB fix for 10-12 years.

    Go Bucs!

  28. Lord Cornelius Says:

I’m with that LUV. I’m reading we’re interested in a variety of O-lineman which is good to see

    -Sign Ryan Jensen C (26) ($11 mill)
-Sign Dion Lewis RB (27) ($3.5 mill)
-Sign Gaines CB (26) ($8 mill)
-Sign Grimes CB (34) ($8 mill)
    -Sign Tandy S ($2 mill)

-Sign Alex Okafor DE (26) ($3.5 mill)
    -Sign McDonald DT ($2 mill)

That’s about what we can afford while still re-signing/extending our own the next few years. Especially knowing Grimes would just be a 1-2 year deal that would come off the books quickly.

Trade down in the draft to 21/22.

21/22 BPA at DT + a Pass rusher
2nd round – CB to groom behind Grimes
3rd round – BPA OG or DE
4th round – BPA OG or DE
    5/6/6/7 – BPA – DE / RB / S / OT

Then either sign a S or draft one high next year. I think that’s the one position I can live with in terms of a group of Tandy/Evans/Conte or something

    QB-Winston
    LT-Smith
    LG-Sweezy/Draft Pick
    C-Jensen
    RG-Marpet
    RT-Dot

    RB-Barber/Lewis/draft pick or 2
    WR-ME/Djax/Godwin/Hump/Bobo
    TE-Howard/Brate/Auclair/Cross

    DE-Okafor/Spence/R3 or R4 pick
    DT-McDonald/R1 pick
    DT-McCoy/Stevie
    DE-Ayers/R1 pick/Clarke

    CB-Grimes/R2 pick
    CB-Gaines/VHIII
    Nickle-VHIII/elliot/jude

    S-Evans/Tandy/Conte

    P-Anger
K-Murray or whoever we can upgrade with

  29. Bucsfanman Says:

OK, so Fuller is guaranteed roughly $13 million and Chicago can match any offer.
I’d rather pursue Fuller who’s 26 and a much better player than Johnson IMO.

  30. Bossmode Says:

These are some option that works in favor of our wonderful front office.

    Free agent:

    Weston Richburg center
    Cameron Fleming tackle
    Jerry Attaochu DE
    Star Lotulelei DT
    Bechaud Breeland corner
    Aaron Colvin corner

Draft: Do what has to be done to get Chubb.
Get Reashard Penney and Ito Smith.

All move fit with our draft guru GM and will save the Glazer money with tier 2 and 3 sign with some injury issue. Which should produce a better team with coaching.

If the honey badger hit the market get active

  31. TBTeddy Says:

Might as well get the best secondary we can if Dline options aren’t that great. I want an amazing DE but outside of Chubb everything is a gamble. Get Trumaine and maybe another shutdown corner to pair with him and Vernon draft Minkah or Derwin. Take into account we have an awesome trio of LBs and just try for coverage sacks lol. Suh is getting cut soon him or Dontari Poe would be lovely as well. Add an rb like Sony in the 2nd round and find some proven OL help in Free Agency then I’d feel pacified about the upcoming season.

  32. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    Stay the course, Bucs.
Concentrate on the trenches and build this team right. They’ve done the quick fix approach – plugging in one guy in areas of need every year and having no backup plan or depth when that guy doesn’t work out – for over a decade with zero success.

Stop the repetitive insanity. Build the trenches.

Go get Norwell. It is so rare for a guy of his talent and age to become available. Go get him. Then bring in a hoard of guys to compete at the dline through free agency and the draft.

There is zero chance the Bucs will fix all of there holes this offseason – and they will be dealing with many of the same holes next year if they try.

But they can stock up the trenches completely this offseason which will trickle down improvement to every other position group.

It may not sound like the sexiest approach – but history has proven it is the best.

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  33. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  34. SOEbuc Says:

Still very confused when people keep saying we need a “shut down” CB when we run a very wide spread zone defense with 12-yard cushions. It’s the bullsh#t defense not the top players out there.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

Grimes is not returning ppl! Stop putting him on your rosters.

  36. Pickgrin Says:

    Well said Tony.

2 big signings and this team would be instantly better.

Sign Norwell or Jensen and bring in Poe to clog up the middle. That’s 2 signings – $18-$20M total that makes you better in the middle up front on both sides of the ball. all other FA signings can be more about value. Sign a mid to lower level CB, RB and DE.

Draft a RB within the 1st 3 rounds from this strong class of backs and use the other 2 high picks for DT (also a strong class) and taking a chance on one of the very fast speed rushing DE/OLBs like Davenport, Landry or Sweat. Look for value at CB, S, OL, DL in rds 4>7.

  37. John meeks Says:

Madmax, how can the bucs draft Chubb and vita vea??please explain how this is possible?
