Report: Bucs Were In Trade Talks For Quinn

March 4th, 2018

Did the Bucs get played?

It seems that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht got blindsided.

Per Jeremy Fowler of BSPN, the Bucs indeed were talking with the Rams about acquiring now healthy Rams beastly defensive end Robert Quinn, who had 8.5 sacks last year including six in Quinn’s final five games.

If one is to read between the lines, the Rams, after talking to the Bucs, pulled off a trade behind Licht’s back with the Dolphins.

Now what this doesn’t say is what the Bucs offered the Rams, if anything. Given the Dolphins acquired Quinn for a pittance, it is starting to smell as if the Rams had no serious intention of trading Quinn to another NFC team, in particular the Bucs.

Joe just cannot believe that Licht — who openly admits the Bucs need a pass rush — would turn his nose up on Quinn for a modest fourth-round pick.

And before the folks scream about what Quinn’s salary is ($12 million in 2018 and 2019), Team Glazer burned through $19 million for Robert Ayers, Swaggy Baker and Will Gholston last season and received 2.5 sacks for their investment.

Joe is not a math teacher, but Team Glazer paid 50 percent more for that troubled troika of pass rushers and got roughly 70 percent less of a sacks return than Quinn produced. Most businesses would quickly go belly-up with that sort of accounting. Not even loan sharks would have the balls.

Joe was talking with several writers at the NFL combine in Indianapolis Saturday and outside of Saquon Barkley, the Quinn trade was a big topic. Virtually every writer Joe spoke with couldn’t believe the Bucs didn’t land Quinn, but offered that there had to be a logical reason the transaction was never executed.

One national writer thought Quinn’s salary was too high until Joe told him about the Ayers/Swaggy/Gholston debacle. Said writer busted out laughing and said, “Well, now that’s different. That makes Quinn look like a bargain.”

One national NFL columnist told Joe that Barkley is such a physical freak he could be an edge rusher for the Bucs and very likely lead the team in sacks. And Joe thinks the guy was half-serious. Upon more thought, he might be right.

This Bucs pass rush, as it currently stands, is just an embarrassing trainwreck. Joe would lay cash Barkley could get more sacks in 2018 than Gholston had in 2017 (none).

Lots on this site feel like fools.

  2. Rod Munch Says:

The trade deadline isn’t official until March 14, so maybe Licht can can talk the Rams into changing their mind. He really really needs to do that, because right now he looks like a real dipspit.

  3. MadMax Says:

^ if true, then of course this is just hard selling by the rams….setting up for more….nice.

  4. MadMax Says:

    *hard bargaining*

  5. Rod Munch Says:

MadMax – Trades can’t officially take place until March 14, so trades like the one for Alex Smith aren’t actually official even though they’ve been announced. Now it’s very very unlikely that anyone would change their mind, GMs who make trades and announce them in order to continue bargaining aren’t long for the league, but since the return on this trade is so little, it’s perhaps possible the Rams would just say the Bucs offer is too good to pass up. Very unlikely that it would happen, but just saying, until the trade paperwork is actually in, it hasn’t happened, and they can’t turn it in until March 14.

    Same old Bucs.

Very true says a once wise Yoda. We can make a better deal, and if it doesn’t happen goes to show you the cruel world of the NFL. We all knew what we thought we knew. Bucs life!

  8. MadMax Says:

Gotcha. Good to see code of conduct still relevant among GM’s though.

  9. Sierra119 Says:

So the possibility the Rams didn’t want to trade him to an NFC team doesn’t make sense to you people ? Or the fact it seems not one other team other than the Dolphins was interested in acquiring an experienced pass rusher for next to nothing ?

This article was so one sided it’s pathetic. Your idiotic metric of comparing the combined salaries of three players versus one is flawed beyond description. You could do that virtually for every team and every position.

My money will be on another solid draft, along with the right free agents. Your just stirring the fan base pot to elicit a prescribed response. Like I sad, pathetic.

    Go Bucs !!!!!

  10. james Says:

Licht is starting to get a reputation as someone who can’t draft… a 4th rounder doesn’t seem like much but he might have been more concerned about using that pick to prove he can grab a sleeper.

  11. Ndog Says:

I was on here telling you all last night, within hours of the trades, that the Rams did not want him in the NFC.

  12. Ndog Says:

Sign Poe, Truman Johnson, a starting left guard, and Carlos Hyde then you can pick whoever you want in the draft or heck trade for whoever you want in the draft like Bradley Chubb for example (wink wink).

  13. Rod Munch Says:

Sierra119 – It’s possible they didn’t want to trade him to an NFC team, but do you really think they see the Bucs as a threat, one player away from making it in? I can see them saying no to the Eagles, the Packers, the Seahawks, etc – but to the Bucs? Also the Bucs can simply offer more, enough that they’d not worry about it. The Bucs do not play the Rams next year so that shouldn’t be an issue either.

  14. Ndog Says:

Rod did you see the Rams or the Eagles as a real threat to win the super bowl this time last year?

  15. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

It wouldn’t have matter much in hindsight, cuz we still have a little league coaching staff

  16. denjoe Says:

Who didn’t know some BS explanation, wouldn’t be offered! You don’t think they would have traded him to someone in the NFC, if the price was right? LMAO!

  17. Ed Kerber Says:

The NFC thing is real. No way that the Rams make a move that could make a team more competitive in the conference. They already need to worry about Seattle and Arizona. And Cowboys Giants Eagles and Redskkins. Not to mention Green Bay and Minnesota. These are all teams that are traditionally known for good defense. By trading to AFC they make their life easier when it comes to playoffs. We need to look at teams in AFC who have extra Defensive talent (but we can skip Cincinnati cause we tried that).

  18. Kstoges Says:

Guys we don’t pick we we get to trade for if we get the offer we get the offer but even if we do get an offer they can decide who they trade him to simple as that I doubt Licht is stupid enough not to try to get Robert Quinn for a later pick but like I said I bet he tried but it’s not his decision if we get him or not he can try which I bet he did but you just never know what really went down and the rams have full control simple as that straight up tho

  19. NFLNut Says:

My guess is the Rams asked for a 3rd and Licht said NO thinking he’d rather have a 3rd round rookie defensive end AND the cap space to sign a starting CB or DT or SS rather than ONLY having Quinn … no big deal imho.

  20. NFLNut Says:

    ******************

If Saquon and Chubb and maybe Quenton and Monkah as well are all off the board and Licht is having a hard time getting the Bills to give up the #21 and #22, how crazy would it be to see him draft the best QB available (probably Josh Rosen) and then tell the Cardinals and Bills they better make their best offer … he could demand the #21 and #22 and 2nd rounder from the Bills and ask for the Cardinals 1st and Patrick Peterson … interesting thought.

    ******************

  21. DayOnePaul Says:

We’ll see. He’s got a bad back that isn’t gonna get better. Got some relief from it last year from moving to a 3-4 outside linebacker. Putting him back down with his hand in the dirt where he has to battle an OT every snap may be more than an $11 million dollar guy with a bad back can handle.

  22. SteveK Says:

Glad we tried, but there is no participation trophies to be had. Licht better if offered a third round pick to get this done.

Still disappointed, and if the Rams turned down a 3 from us then it would make a little more sense.

We are not in a position to not make that trade. Our pass rush is in a league of its own in terms of how terrible it is.

  23. The Anomaly Says:

Second place is the first loser. Licht is in his last year of GM. Dirk is in his last year as head coach. Dead men walking.

  24. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “If one is to read between the lines, the Rams, after talking to the Bucs, pulled off a trade behind Licht’s back with the Dolphins.” LOTS of speculation Joe, but in fact no one (except probably 3 GMs) really know what went down. Licht blindsided? Heck we don’t even know for certain at this point that he WAS in negotiations. And IF he was, none of us know for certain what Licht was offering the Rams. The ONLY thing we do know for certain right now is that Quinn isn’t a Buc. Oops, we know one more thing too … the Bucs are STILL DESPERATE to improve our DLine. Good news though: free agency & the draft haven’t even started yet.

  25. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Joe is not a math teacher, but this tells Joe that Team Glazer paid 50 percent more for that troubled troika of pass rushers, and got roughly 70 percent less of a return than Quinn.

Joe, your math is not flawed….but (not to nitpick) You do get more value out of three players in the rotation than one……there would be tackles, pressures, hits….and perhaps special teams play….but I do get your point.
And, I have always felt that we should take one top talent over two mediocre players in FA.

  26. richbucsfan Says:

Should this be true, it shows the incompetence of our current GM. The Bucs will be what they have been. Bitterly sad moment.

  27. darin Says:

    Sierra.
Duh. Teams prefer nof trading in their conference and definitely division. And then….wait for it…then the compensation sorts it out. If the bucs offer up their 3rd round pick and so do the dolphins…guess what? The rams trade to the bucs because their 3rd is higher this year. Simple. Like selling your yugo buddy. You dont wana selll it to the guy who made fun of it for years, but you will if he has the most cash. Licht tried to low ball them is my guess. I guess he doesnt know he isnt in position for games.

  28. Buccaneer scotty Says:

It would just be nice if you did something positive

  29. Bobby M. Says:

Licht is too concerned with the perception of the deal he makes vs fixing the team. That kicker trade scarred him, he got blasted throughput the league for that and now the dude is gun shy.

  30. BucEmUp Says:

I guarantee Quinn agent knew of the trade talks and the rams asked Quinn of there were anywhere he didn’t want to go..

Telling you nobody worth a crap on defense wants to play under.Mike Smith
Entire new coaching staff next season

  31. The Buc Realist Says:

So, if the so called fans wanted NFL GM Licht fired because he made no offer, and now that it has been reported he did, do we have to extend his contract??????

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  32. tnew Says:

I’m flummoxed about this situation. I’m not going to make any snap judgements here but if Licht was involved, he should’ve and could’ve overcome the interconference obstacle.

IMO, the Bucs need a President of Football Operations that oversees the vision and direction of the team. Licht has strengths, and I believe he needs to be retained but he needs a football guy above him. This would help him immensely. Coughlin’s role with the Jaguars is a perfect example of what I’m referring to. I don’t have any names as I haven’t done any true research here, but there is a need for a highly respected football guy to come in and be a buffer between the Glazers and Licht. I usually don’t like to add layers in organisations, but this would really benefit the Bucs.

At the surface, the Bucs need a MAJOR upgrade on the Pro Personnel side of the business. This should’ve been a requirement IMO, when retaining Licht.

Looking at our roster, the Bucs have WAY too many plus receivers/tight ends and WAY to few running threats and Guards. Defensively, way too heavy on LB’s but equally light on CB’s and lineman. Hard decisions to bolster the team must be evaluated. I love the Cam Brate/OJ Howard duo and a great 1,2 like them is great if this is the basis of the passing offense, but the Bucs have Evans, DJax, Humphries (who the organization is very high on) Godwin and Bobo Wilson (who reportedly was tearing up the practice squad all year) Brate/OJ80/DJax/Evans (not saying trade all, just one, and the better the player you give up has to equal the same in return) are very tradeable assets and could be a key to fixing the pass rush. I would love to keep everyone but the Bucs are flush in some areas and vacant in others. In today’s NFL there must be balance. NFL coaches don’t allow teams to win with their strengths.

  33. Joeypoppems Says:

I’m not buying the “Rams didn’t want him in the NFC” logic. I can understand not wanting to trade him to a contender, but the Bucs aren’t that.

It’s more realistic that the Dolphins just flat out made a better offer than the Bucs.

  34. Pickgrin Says:

Ever consider that the Rams had no interest in doing a deal with another NFC team?

  35. SteveK Says:

    Realist,

If Licht offered a third and the Rams preferred the dolohins’ Fourth, than there isn’t much we could’ve done.

Licht is much more worthy for an extension than his predecessor. If Licht can fix the DLine, find a RB1, and get a legit CB then I’m all
    For extending him.

  36. SteveK Says:

    All for extending him*

  37. SteveK Says:

    Pickgrin,

I’m not sure Les Snead would turn down our 3rd vs a Miami 4th? If that’s the case then he needs his head examined.

Did Licht offer a 3rd is the question. I assume no, as Quinn is a dolphin.

  38. Chris Says:

Just like the chiefs didn’t want to keep PEters in the conference, the rams did the same.

Why help an NFC foe that technically needs to improve their pass rush that would immediately improve their defense? Honestly we have the 32ndcranked defense strictly due to no pass rush or run defense. D-LINE is a position that outside of McCoy, could use a complete overhaul with 7-8 new horses. Honestly I’d cut Ayers.

Some fans need to understand the negotiation tactics and the strategy of the rams is this: they were going to dump Quinn’s salary butcwanted to send him out of the conference because it’s not like he’s washed up but they would like to sign their own guys like Watkins, Gurley, Donald and Goff eventually. It was an easy decision to not have to face him in conference and help improve an nfc team that has loads of talent on the offensive side of the ball and has 70+ million to do damage in FA.

  39. tnew Says:

If the Rams had no interest in doing a deal with an NFC team then why were they “in talks with the Bucs”.

If there were talks, they were open to do a trade with the Bucs. This is like any other business deal. The reason why deals don’t get done is terms. Miami had better terms than we did. If everything was like for like (or close only three picks separate the 4th round picks) the same deal but , then yes, of course the Rams chose Miami due to conference ties, but the Bucs have to understand this and have to win the bid. The Bucs also should’ve had more desperation than the Dolphins to acquire that talent.

Would I give up a 3rd? Not for Quinn at this stage. But a fourth and a sixth and seventh (no swap of sixths)

Every year is a fresh start. Bucs have offensive talent, money to improve the DL and high draft picks to get a stud RB in a stronger class. Rams would kick themselves trading him to the Bucs to help them get stronger along with the cap space they have to add a few more horses up front.

  41. SteveK Says:

Licht absolved if he offered a 3 and swapping 6’s.

Anything less, and he’s on the hook for the lack of edge rush results. We need a legit edge rush more than anything.

Who said they were doing business with the Bucs? Jason Licht could have inquired and made an offer and was just rejected due to their intentions and interest of trading him out of the conference.

  43. tnew Says:

the title of this article is

“Report: Bucs were in Trade Talks for Quinn”

Trade talks implies more than an inquiry. Talks implies a back and forth dialogue.

If the title was “Licht Inquired about Quinn” , that would have been different.

  44. JJ Says:

Would love to have had Quinn, I wouldn’t have given our 3rd, I would given 4th this year and 5th or 6th next year, though if it was an option. The move I would love to see is the Bucs give Graham Gano a big contract and solve our kicking woes. He is a free agent and we can weaken a division foe. Oh I know, he is just a kicker. Our kickers cost us the playoffs last year and the way jackass Koetter settles for FGs – we better have one of the best kickers in the league. BTW- Trumaine Johnson and Joyner (if they don’t tag him) would shove it up the Rams a$$, LOL.

  45. Frank Pillow Says:

We’re comfortably back to being league-wide laughingstocks. Thank you Glazer family. Thank you Jason Licht. The failure the close the deal here is another black mark on this regime and all of us as fans. Punked by the Rams and Fish. Wow.

  46. tnew Says:

SteveK.. 100% agree, if he deemed Quinn warranted a 3rd and offered it, not one fan can ever say a thing. If he offered even, the fourth and swap thirds, we shouldn’t make a peep. But either of those would have yielded a trade. The NFC thing is just to explain why the choice was made over basically the same offer.

My best guess is Bucs offered a 4th, then the Rams made some calls. Dolphins said “We will do that, and switch 6’s to even up the difference.” Therefore its the same deal and it kept Quinn out of the conference. Win Win for Rams

  47. Chris Says:

But the source says made an offer. THe rams can talk and listen to offers with known intentions. Good business is to not rule out exceptions if a team like the Bucs offers something outrageously desperate.

I’m sure they listened to offers from other teams outside the Bucs and dolphins as well. But look at most of the top trades that have happened the last few years.

2018: peters to rams : afc to nfc
Alex Smith : afc to nfc
2017: Ajayi to the eagles: afc to nfc
Cooks to the pats: nfc to afc
Ealy to the pats : nfc to afc

Even when the Bucs have made some trades including zuttah, Talib and Blount we shipped them to the Afc.

Sure there are few patterns like Bradford from the eagles to vikings but it recouped a first round pick once return , one Philly lost for the wants trade.

    See a pattern?

  48. SteveK Says:

Quinn had 8.5 sacks last year, is on the right side of 30, and is under contract for the next 2 years. Absolutely worth our 3rd round pick this year.

  49. Chris Says:

Bradford to vikings for a first was more of an exception*** not pattern.

  50. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s tough enough to make it to the playoffs without trading players to in-conference teams….especially players who will likely make that team much better.
Why would the Rams talk to the Bucs then?…..well, the more teams involved with the potential trade, the better the trade.

  51. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Quinn and bad back = Bennett and his bad shoulder. How has that worked out for us?

  52. Not there yet Says:

We constantly hear about the trades he TRIED to make, maybe you’ll get one done in Tampa that’s not for a late round draft pick. Weak gm And coach, it would be foolish to expect them to turn it around until we see it

  53. Drew aka q Says:

Licht must be one shi$$y arshe negotiator

  54. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Chris

The Bucs also have an inept coaching staff and a soft culture. And if the Rams were that worried that Quinn could make a team that much better to the point where it could bite them in the end then they wouldnt have dumped him for a measly 4th round pick.

  55. Doctor Stroud Says:

If teams are not willing to make trades within their conferences, then Licht needs to scour the rosters of AFC teams and start making offers. Any suggestions?

  56. SteveK Says:

After the Rams shipped picks to the Chiefs for Peters, they should’ve wanted the best return for Quinn.

You all act like we are nipping at the heels of the Rams? We are a last place team on the opposite side of the country. Lol Bucs expect to get better, but don’t make bold moves to bolster the sh!ttiest D-Line over the last decade .

I’m thrilled GMC tweeted about it. Guys been here forever and the only damn help he has, Mike Bennett, is cut by DumbDominik.

Now we need to ask did Licht offer a 3rd rounder for Quinn? Was he too scared to inquire on Peters? Did the Glazers say no to offering Calais Camobell a huge deal?

Are we evening swinging and missing, or hiding in the clubhouse afraid to even take a damn shot? Bucs fans deserve so much better.

  57. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

One thing is for sure, we need to find out exactly what went down. IMHO, Licht owes every Buc Fan that.

  58. SteveK Says:

    Exactly, Chris!

With the dismal results, true fans want the “why”
Or in this case “why not”.

  59. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

Oh the loyal Bucs faithful and their maniaachal behavior. Consider these Buc fans:

    1. Just because Jeremy Fowler “thinks” Quinn is fully healthy doesn’t mean he is. Jeremy doesn’t even work out West for ESPN, where local beat writers for Rams would be able to talk to team physician “sources” to have the real smack in Quinn.

    2. What if Licht, having worked in multiple NFL front offices before Bucs including Arizona, has built medical personnel or team physician Contacts through the years like all GM’ s have and use that are not their teams’ sources. If those contacts knew better and felt that the back injury was likely a bigger concern, then there you go.

    3. Lastly…and MOST of all…Licht isn’t trading a 3rd round pick at #7 overall?!?! Not even swapping 3rd’s with another team! Think about that ammunition folks! That’s 8 slots away from a 2nd rounder!?!

Light is using 1-3 rounders definitely in 2018, possibly parts of those also in 2019, to TRADE UP.

Barkley…Saquon that is, KEEPS Jason’s job, whether all the Buc faithful, like it, believes it, or not. Saquon’ s impact itself on Bucs 2018 season is worth 4 wins minimum. It is, don’t care what you all will speculate on that number.

    Go Bucs!!

  60. SteveK Says:

^ let’s play a game. Who has more impact next year:

Buccaneers 3rd round pick vs. Robert Quinn??????

I’m willing to let it play out. And if/when results are clear, we will know the truth.

  61. Joeypoppems Says:

    ^

To add on to that I’d be willing to bet there is a good chance that a 3rd round RB will have a bigger impact on his team than Barkley.

  62. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    No way.

The Rams make the deal if the Bucs offer a 3rd or a 4th and an additional late round pick. Licht got cute and greedy and lost.

There’s zero chance the Rams turn down an obviously better deal. The Bucs haven’t made the playoffs in a decade. The Rams wouldnt have worried about creating a juggernaut back East.

Peters and Quinn were there to be had. Two pro bowlers 27 years old or younger. Bargain prices.

    Just… wow.

Norwell is Licht’z last chance to grab a proven and young Pro Bowler.

    Buc’s fans are watching, Licht.

FIX THE TRENCHES, FIX THE BUCS!!

  63. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    Yeah…@Poppems…

And Rachel Watson comes anywhere near Joe too.

    Go Bucs!

  64. Bobby M. Says:

Licht needs a miracle…..its not happening folks. There’s nothing in his 4 yr history that suggest he can fill all these holes.

  65. Joeypoppems Says:

    @BetterBuccinBelieveIt

I guess Joe should be feeling pretty lucky then lol.

To be serious I just feel like there is too much stock being put into Barkley’s athleticism. There are a lot of times on tape where he is running between the tackles and ends up dancing behind the LOS resulting in a TFL (ie: vs Ohio State).

People like to say that its because his OL wasn’t good. Which maybe it is. However, how many teams in the Top 10 picks have a good OL? I see him being linked to teams like the Colts, Giants and the Bucs. None of which, imo, have a good OL.

So if in college he couldn’t overcome poor OL play with his “elite athleticism” why would that change in the pros where the defenses are faster and stronger?

Then I watch Derrius Guice who imo is the best RB in this class. He also played behind a poor OL in college. Guice never dances behind the OL and he rarely gets TFL. He sees the hole, he hits the hole.

Makes me wonder if Barkley was behind a bad OL or does he have suspect vision between the tackles?

Just food for thought I guess.

  66. mark2001 Says:

Expect this alot….who would want to play for the perennial doormat of the NFC South? So expect great FA’s to play the Bucs and none wanting to play for the Bucs. Just get ready boys…another basement rerun, total shakeup, and Greg Schiano is asked to again coach the Bucs. Nice job, Glazer boys.

  67. BrianBucs Says:

The only thing that this means at all is that the Bucs inquired. Nothing more and nothing less. Im sure a lot of teams inquired.

  68. The Buc Realist Says:

very suspicious that the “Bucs” interest were reported!!! Could this just be the greatest smoke screen in Bucs history?????? Bucs hire a D-line coach with 3-4 experience, yet “say” in the interview that they will primarily run a 4-3!!!!!!! Then to let leak of interest in trading for Quinn way after the fact!!!!!!!!!!

Stay tuned Buc fans and sheep!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  69. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @Poppems,

Sound good valid thoughtful analysis in your last take, nicely done. And of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion. A couple points on your last take, if I may.

    1. Saquon did have a pretty weak Oline, as evidence by no one at PSU regarded by almost all pre-draft pundits as being worth a 1st-3rd round draft pick at their position this year.

    2. Second, Guice doesn’t even catch the ball, neither on 3rd down OR any down, and in his words at the Combine “they didn’t ask me to that too much at LSU…that wasn’t our scheme”. So, how long would it take for his natural ramp-up to be (especially in the toughest competition he’s faced in the NFL) to get to a smooth natural pass-catching RB like Barkley, like Gurley, Like Lev Bell?

2a. See Mike Mayock’s take on the points of pass catching and blitz pick up/pass pro dimensions on Guice at the Combine. They’re not good.

    3. And this point I feel is quite important….research Guice OFF THE FIELD at LSU. It’s not good. JUST LIKE Arden Key’s off field at LSU. One out of every 2 punks coming out of LSU, seems to have issues (see Mathieu then, several others)–it’s a lax lazy environment at LSU. Guice will revisit those punk, entitled ways off the field in the NFL once he gets money, prestige, IMO.

    4. Lastly, ask yourself how incredibly valuable a completely proficient 3-down running/catching RB is to any offense, (see Gurley, Lev Bell, Kamara) in the Red Zone, on 3rd down and 4, going for it on fourth down maybe. Those are where the worth of touchdowns and difference-making plays keep drives going, and close on drives.

Plus, I firmly believe that Licht is very willing to get into a bidding war with Gettleman at NYG THIS year for one player….Andrew Norwell. Landing Norwell and Norwell specifically, will support and allow Licht (in his mind) to invest ALL the picks that are necessary on the night of April 26th for Saquon. I see him cutting Sweezy, maybe adding Richburg and/or Jensen also, all in FA.

    Go Bucs!

  70. Frank Pillow Says:

Here’s the thing, friends…exactly what has Licht done to EARN our benefit of doubt? LOOK at our record during his tenure. LOOK how bare were are and continue to be at KEY positions on both sides of the ball. LOOK at the poor FA track record. LOOK at the fact that he traded a premium pick for a KICKER- a move that yielded NO positive return on investment. LOOK at the fact that he was the face of the LOVIE ouster/Dirk hire and subsequent evaluations of this roster and coaching staff.

  71. Guzziep Says:

You want to make a splash, franchise altering move, go get Suh no way Miami can keep him at his cap hit of $26 million, of even we would need to redo his contract, but Suh, McCoy and a high rookie and the Bucs defense might be respectable

  72. Joel Says:

“Looked into” and “talking with” can be two completely different things.

  73. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Frank Pillow

He gets points for firing lovie!!!!! In fact we should give him 2019 as well for that great move!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  74. Frank Pillow Says:

It’s not the firing of Lovie- any imbecile could’ve let that record speak for itself- it’s the fact that he stood up there and put himself on the spot for owning every move from that point on- as if he wasn’t complicit at all during Lovie’s tenure. My only point is he should be on the hook for ALL of it. So, own it. He’s the GM. Wins/Losses are the only things that matter- and his record here in that regard is atrocious.

  75. DanBucsFan Says:

Whatever ! I still stamd by my comment that Licht is not showing enough urgency. I will use this analogy to sum up my opinion. Licht is like a teenager who has never been past first base, while other Gm’s in the Nfl slide in and grab that @$$ right away. We have needs Licht and who gives a damn what we think or purpose the Bucs do, LICHT and LICHT alone is the man in charge of making upgrades. DON’T MESS THIS UP LICHT !! He will be fired and move on but we the fans will be stuck playing the what if game for years to come.

  76. Joeypoppems Says:

    @BetterBuccinBelieveIt

I appreciate that. And just for the record, I dont dislike Barkley or think he is a bust or anything along those lines. I just dont think he is as much of a lock as the media hypes him up to be. He is RB2 for me. Also for the record, I wouldnt take Guice at #7 overall either. As far as your points go:

    1) PSU only has 2 OL in this years draft so I wouldn’t say their draft position should define the play of the entire unit this past season. Like I said, the OL might have been bad and maybe that is the reason for the dancing behind the LOS. I dont see how him going to a team with a bad OL in the NFL, like the teams I mentioned, will equal better results when the defenses will be better.

    2) I put a lot of stock, too much stock, into pass catching last year when I had Fournette as my RB4 (behind Mixon, Cook, and McCaffrey) because he also wasn’t asked to do that at LSU. Fournette had 36 catches this past season. Charles Sims who’s role is pass catching on this team had 35. Just because he didn’t do it in college doesn’t mean he cant do it.

2a) Pass protection doesn’t make or break a prospect. It is ok if a RB is only a 2 down player. Adrian Peterson in his prime was a 2 down player for the Vikings because he struggled with pass pro and pass catching.

    3) Yes, off the field issues are important to sort through. I have not heard of any of Derrius Guice’s off the field issues. Nobody in the national media has talked about it. Nobody on draft twitter has brought it up. And when I google it myself I don’t find anything. Arden Key has legit off the field concerns. He quit the team for “undisclosed reasons” and when he rejoined he was out of shape and lazy and you can see that on tape. There are no reports of anything like that on Guice. If you would like to link me to reports that you found that go over Guice’s off the field concerns I will be happy to take a look.

    4) To be honest the value of a RB is debatable. Correct me if I’m wrong but the 2 teams that just played in the SB both had 3 man RB rotations. Eagles with Blount, Ajayi, and Clement. Pats with Lewis, Burkhead, and White. Having a do-it-all RB is a nice luxury to have, but thats just what it is. A luxury. The only way the Bucs should be considering a RB in the 1st round is if Dirk Koetter is going to change his offense to more of a run first approach. Barkley or any RB in Dirk Koetter’s offense will not get anywhere near the touches of a Lev Bell or Todd Gurley.

    5) Signing Andrew Norwell would be a good move for the Bucs, on paper anyway. We won’t know how any FA will work out until the season begins. Desean Jackson looked like a good signing on paper. Didn’t work out how we thought it would. Signing a vet kicker in Nick Folk looked good on paper. Didn’t work out how we thought it would. Upgrading the NT spot next to GMC by signing Chris Baker looked good on paper. Didn’t work out how we thoughtit would. I also dont think Sweezy will get cut. Keeping Marpet at Center is the right move. And I’m saying that as one of the few last year who were against the move to Center in the first place.

Licht trading up in the draft was a popular discussion last offseason for the then “Top 10 lock” in Dalvin Cook. There is no where in Licht’s draft history with this team that shows him giving up too many coveted picks in a trade.

When he traded up for Marpet in 2015 he didn’t give up any picks, he just swapped 4th round picks with the Colts.

When he traded up for Aguyo in 2016 he gave up the extra 4th round pick he got from the Bears in the 1st round trade down.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but the trade up for Beckwith this past year was the first time he actually gave up a draft pick in a trade and it was only a 6th round pick.

So I have no idea where people are getting the idea that Licht all of a sudden is gonna trade away the farm for 1 player.

  77. LakeLand Says:

This don’t sound right. The Bucs are not the Seattle Seahawks, Minnesota Vikings, Philadelphia Eagles, Atlanta Falcons etc. They are not a threat to anyone in the NFC or the AFC. Trading to the Bucs are like trading to the Cleveland Browns. They may have refuse the Bucs trade, out of respect to Robert Quinn.

After Robert Quinn got on his knees and begged them, not to trade him to the pathetic Bucs. But all of this still fall on Jason Licht inability to bring talent to the Bucs. He’s not respected around the league, the Bucs need to make changes at the top. As long as the Bucs continue their playoff drought. They will not attract top free agents. And players will not welcome a trade to the Bucs. Even draft prospects are trying to avoid the Bucs.

  78. Perimeter Blocker Says:

So not only are we getting beat on the field… now we are getting beat off the field…🙄

  79. Dan Says:

    We are a Joke

  80. jb™ Says:

Is anyone really surprised by this? I had such I hopes for Licht but it’s starting to look like we’ll be lucky stay in the mix by week 8 of the 2018 season. He’s gonna have to pull off a Quadruple Hat Trick between Free Agency and the Draft to have even a prayer of keeping his job next season.

  81. BetterBuccinBelieveIt Says:

    @ Poppems,

Appreciate the lengthy response and time put in to the thought of composing it.

At this point, it’s all so lost from the original points/contentions, tough to ascertain where it stands. Some very thoughtful analysis you laid out.

    We shall see.

    Go Bucs!

  82. Owlykat Says:

Did any of you note that Taven Brian had almost the same stats as J.J. Watt at the combine? With our Super DL Coach don’t you think he could take Taven and teach him how to play DE in our 4-3? If yes, we don’t need Quinn. Sit back and wait and see if Chubb falls to us at 7, and if not pick Taven. We wouldn’t even need Quinn. Then take Tim Settle with the second pick to pair with Stevie T inside and stop all runs inside the Tackles. Chubb or Taven would stop any runner on their side on the way to the QB. Then put McCoy at the other end with no more double teams. He would tackle any runner to his side on his way to the QB too and jump up and deflect any passes too. We would have a great front four no sweat so who has to have Quinn? I agree bungling Licht should have gotten him for insurance in addition to Noah Spence, but not a necessity.
