“We Are Looking Forward To Kicking Ass”

March 28th, 2018

GM has deep dive on Bucs.

Mix in Jason Licht and Kay Adams and you have a solid spot.

And that was the case this morning on “Good Morning, Football” seen weekday mornings on NFL Network.

Your Buccaneers AC/DC-loving general manager had a wonderful interview with GMFB co-host Peter Schrager live from the NFL owners meetings in Orlando. In the interview, Licht made sure to throw some love at Adams, the it-girl for Bucs fans and constant thorn in the side of prized JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman, who gripes often about NFL Network producers not preempting the popular morning program regularly for otherwise lame press conferences.

(Ira would much rather watch graying old men drone in generic empty football cliches than hot, excited young women talk football.)

Licht, before he mentioned to Adams how she is a popular lass within the walls of One Buc Palace, broke down the offseason moves of the Bucs with really interesting nuggets.

One such piece was that Licht, a former offensive lineman at Nebraska, said he had more enjoyment watching Ryan Jensen’s tape last year playing center than any offensive lineman in the past 10 years.

Another interesting gem in the interview reinforced a core belief with Licht. He has a philosophy he has developed through his years as a personnel guy that players with a Type-A personality are more likely to work their arses off and go the extra mile than a guy with a passive mindset. Licht mentioned how he hadn’t spent much time at all around new defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul since JPP was drafted until Licht consumated the trade with the Giants last week.

Licht noted how he forgot how much “charisma” JPP has.

Licht also dropped a new catchphrase for Joe, saying the men he is bringing into the Bucs locker room the past month don’t have a “five-star virus.”

You can watch the full video below. It’s worth your time.

I think 8 wins would be great, not sure if that’s “kicking ass” or not, typically you have to be someone like Philly or New England to administer “ass kickins”……NFC South is very, very tough — a one-point win is a “W”!!!!!

  2. Eric Says:

I’m for no mouth running until a decent team is fielded.

  3. Mike Johnson Says:

Kicking Ass? I like his confidence. I sure hope it transfers to the coaching staff.
Maybe we can get DC Smitty back on the sidelines during gameday if we..place a..Hooters gal in his binoculars view? I’m also getting this feeling Licht has a view surpises in store for us during this years draft.

  4. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Don’t believe the hype. Show me don’t tell me.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

until they earn it on the field they are soft failures with a track record for choking

  6. AlteredEgo Says:

hopefully not like the one legged men they’ve been running out there the last 10 years….

  7. Tom S. Says:

A 22-24 GM looks forward to kicking ass. So does every child that gets bullied.

Maybe we can make it out of the NFC South cellar this year?

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I hope kicking a$$ is not the same as “walk softly and carry a big m–f–kin’ stick”……that didn’t work too well..

I’d love to kick some a$$ and win…but if you can’t win….at least kick some a$$.

  9. denjoe Says:

This is unrelated, but is anyone else tired of hearing koetter talking about close games? Bad decisions is why we lost close games, wether it was the kickers or sticking with Doug or not developing the running game, pass rush, gambling on injured players, not having depth and so on.

  10. D-Rome Says:

Yeah well, let’s just hope he’s not cringing at playoff expectations because anything less than that will be a failure for him and the franchise.

  11. StPeteBucsFan Says:

“Maybe we can make it out of the NFC South cellar this year?”

If we do that will be kicking ass. One of the cool things about Joe cross pollinating at league wide meetings is the different perspectives from other coaches and GM’s.

Doug Marrone and others have mentioned without even being asked how difficult the South Division is and how much harder that makes if for the Bucs.

I’m celebrating the great Division with the old cliche. If you want to be the best you gotta beat the best. So winning the NFC South would qualifying as kick asss for me.

  12. Lamarcus Says:

Just don’t be the team that gets his butt kicked. That’s all I’m asking for. No more first quarter blow outs

  13. Phil Says:

Watching anything with Kay Adams is always good.

  14. Defense Rules Says:

Excellent article Joe. I’m anticipating a LOT of great things from JPP in particular. Still WAY TOO EARLY though to talk about ‘kicking arse’ in the NFC South. As it stands right now, we’re a 5-11 cellar-dweller until we show otherwise. When last season closed out, I saw us needing AT LEAST 10 new starters (2 G, RB, DT, 2 DE, 2 CB, 1 SS plus a kicker). Plus several additional key rotational players AND better depth. So far in FA, Licht has added 6 of those starters (G/C, DT, 2 DE, 1 CB, PK). At BEST we’ll get 3 starters from the draft plus some depth. Need several more pieces in FA or via trades to be competitive in the NFC South. Atlanta, New Orleans & Carolina keep improving also … and they started higher up on the totem pole.

Koetter hasn’t denied any of this (though he hasn’t called out Martin which was solely in his lap). That’s one reason he has harped on red zone offense .

  16. Capt Kidd Says:

    Speak it in to being!!

  17. mike10 Says:

    Yay JPP

  18. Rod Munch Says:

    Language!

  19. JimmyJack Says:

None of the othe NFC South teams are that great. It just looks that way when your team is blow-out bad like we were.

Using our division as a crutch to garbage football is quite pathetic.

Now those who wanna blame our division for losing would likely blame any of the other NFC divisions if we traded places with their ceillar dwellers. But the truth is the Buccaneers have as much talentthe Falcons, Saints and Panthers. We just come into games with no mental toughness and unprepared to compete.

I can care less about a team that canā€™t beat the Panthers. That team is not as good as you want to wish they were….so they can be used as a crutch, an excuse.

  20. AlteredEgo Says:

JJ….Panthers have been accumulating young starting talent at a faster rate than the Bucs

  21. 813bucboi Says:

is licht still cringing?…..or is he now carrying a big stick?…..

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  22. ARGH_M8E Says:

You let him do whatever he wants, as long as he gets double digit sacks, I donā€™t give a fuhhhhhhhhhh

  23. Joe Says:

    Thanks Defense!

  24. Guzzie Says:

    Great video….getting pumped

  25. JimmyJack Says:

Altered did you see the Panthers in the playoffs? They were pretenders. They arenā€™t that good.

  26. AlteredEgo Says:

JJ…last year was last year….as I said accumulating young starters faster than the Bucs……

  27. Destinjohnny Says:

    No secondary
    Average o line
    No running back
    6-10

  28. Seattle Buc Says:

I need to see it on the field we were far from kicking ass last year. Not nearly physical enough. I want the 90s Cowboys OL on this team and then talk about ass kicking

  29. Walktheplank Says:

Yeah go trade down get DE Davenport and RB Chubb, then grab the dB Hughes and LB Griffin from UCF. None should have a 5 star virus!

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Altered Iā€™m going off of last year as well. You look at the play on the field and the Panthers are very beatable.

They are hardly the juggernaut that Tampa fans want to believe they are. Same goes for the Saints and Falcons.

  31. Owlykat Says:

The proof is in the pudding not in Lichtā€™s puffing. It is possible with really smart drafting to improve our team from where we were last year. However,
Licht believes in just drafting the highest rated player from his board without regard to need. Now we know how highly rated he had his fifth rated RB last year, but he obviously overlooked the ladā€™s brainpower and he never could learn an NFL playbook so we wasted a fifth pick. You know how highly he had Sweezy when he got him and missed his bad back. So I am not sure Licht is that great in evaluating players. If he doesnā€™t fill all our needs because he is adding a great LB or great WR or another TE, he will not be retained at the end of next year and cost Koetter and our DC their jobs too. Weā€™ll see how he does!!!

  32. Owlykat Says:

By contrast with really expert advice Jacksonville completely turned it around in one year, but they did it by drafting for need and making sure they were really strong in the trenches and got a great RB too. The SB Champion Eagles did it by filling all their needs with proven free agents. Again they had great players and depth in their trenches and they were not afraid to pay big bucks for premium Free Agents. Neither of those approaches have been used in the past by Licht. Has Licht learned from them or will he stubbornly just continue going with his own losing approach.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Owlykat……Thatā€™s, umm, quite a theory you got there but how exactly do you figure that Licht ignores team needs when he drafts?

I mean itā€™s kinda hard to know what their board looks like when itā€™s not public knowledge.

  34. JimmyJack Says:

I means the entire fanbase was whining weapons for Winston last year. Not saying that everybody thought that but according to the voice of the fanbase Licht drafted for our biggest need.

  35. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    J.J.

You are entitled to your opinion but your facts are skewed badly.

“None of the othe NFC South teams are that great. It just looks that way when your team is blow-out bad like we were.”

Both Doug Marrone of the Jags and Jason Garrett of the Cowboys commented on how good the NFC South is and how tough that makes it for the Bucs.

The closest to a blowout came against the Panthers and Falcons…otherwise we played these guys very close and won our final game against the Division winner.

    But how about records JJ.

The South won 37 games…the North 34 games and the West 34..the East just 32.

It’s no accident that the Gmen were one of our wins. That’s the NFC.

The AFC is far worse…two good teams..NE and Pittsburgh…that “playoff” game between Jax and Buffalo was embarrassing…neither of these two teams looked as good as the Bucs.

  36. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

ā€œWe Are Looking Forward To Kicking Assā€

    I hope so!

I’m tired of every season ending with “Akick’nTheBucNuts”

  37. Turn Off the Licht Says:

Licht is so full of it. He wants Type A personalities? How in the hell are OJ Howard, Vernon Hargreaves, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, or Charles Sims “type A personalities”.

  38. JimmyJack Says:

St. Pete my point is about how bad the Bucs were. And itā€™s makes those teams look better because of it. The first two division games last year(NO and Car) were actually big games for us at that time.

You can call them what you want but we got spanked soundly in both of them.
Two games against Matt Ryan and he never broke a sweat…!!!….120 minutes and he never once had any pressure to move the ball or score…..You may commend the effort all you want, thatā€™s your right…..Personally I am thoroughly effing embarrassed.

Those teams are good but are just not as great as Tampa thinks. We just donā€™t know whatā€™s itā€™s like to see a competitive team on the field.

Let the Bucs get a real team on the field and we shall see how truely good those teams are……RATHer then packing it in because those teams are so so great that we donā€™t have a chance. Itā€™s an excuse, the fac5 is we donā€™t have a chance just because we suck.

  39. JimmyJack Says:

And there is no such thing as facts when we are discussing how good or bad we think a team is. Itā€™s an opinion.

But I do totally disagree with your assessment of the Jags being worse then th3 Bucs…..or looking worse then them, whatever. That is baffling to me.

  40. SOEbuc Says:

Now that the NFL ruled you aren’t allowed to tackle players anymore, Bucs are going to the SB every year with all our receiving weapons.

  41. Bird Says:

Yah. The nf south is terrible.

It only has a team in the NFC championship almost every year for the last 5 years.

  42. JimmyJack Says:

Good point Bird. Buuuuut, that didnā€™t even happen this year so keep searching.

Why donā€™t we go back the year before that when we got p-whipped by a 7-9 Saints team thatā€™s ended our season. You keep think8ng they are unstoppable and thatā€™s why we lose. Iā€™ll keep seeing our Bucs go out and play soft football, thatā€™s where the losing is coming from. Not our schedule or division.

  43. Defense Rules Says:

@JimmyJack … ā€œNone of the othe NFC South teams are that great.” Since 2014 when Jason Licht was hired, NFC South has had 6 playoff teams (Panthers 3 times, Falcons 2 times, Saints once). Two of those teams made it to the Super Bowl in those 4 years. Last year their record was a combined 32-16 (not a bad winning %) & all 3 of them made the playoffs. Not that shabby JimmyJack.

  44. Bird Says:

    Jimmy jack

Please read. I used the Word “almost” in my post. You are always right though man My bad.

  45. JimmyJack Says:

Defense…I do understand they are good teams. Maybe I did mirespresnt my opinion I donā€™t care.

My problem is with hearing how great our division is all the time. I disagree with it every time I hear it. And it gets said all the time. Had to say something.

Itā€™s just an excuse to me. Iā€™m tired of the fanbase talking up the rest of the division as why we canā€™t make the playoffs. They need to be talking down the Bucs. We have been pathetic over the life of those stats youā€™ve presented.

We are not in some insanely tough division. We arenā€™t unable to compete with our division because the other teams are great. We are just a bad football team. Thatā€™s all their is to it. Whining about the division is a lame excuse. And if we canā€™t beat anybody in the South we deserve 5 or less wins. We suck hard Tampa, understand it.

  46. JimmyJack Says:

Alright Bird I missed that so I apoligize.

But I would like to point out that I care nothing for what the Falcons or Saints did 5 years ago. Or 4,3,2 years ago.

Iā€™ll look at last year and go from there. And sorry, I just donā€™t see greatness oozing from our division. Postseason takes precedence in this conversation and Carolina looked like pretenders to me. The Falcons donā€™t scare me and I think we can match up quite well with them. The Saints can b3 beaten if you can play more physical………I think we should be able to compete with these teams but we have no attitude and a losers mentality(for starters).

And no, Iā€™m not one of these ā€œIā€™m always rightā€ posters. This is my freaking opinion dude, calm down. Iā€™m not telling you that you must have the same one. I just enjoy the debate.

  47. JimmyJack Says:

Typo on playing more physical……..More physical then they do is what I meant.

The Bucs can play more physical and still get tossed around.

  48. Kstoges Says:

How can you not like this guy! Heā€™s like a fan heā€™s one of us guys he just happens to be smart as hell and a Think a darn good gm heā€™s really transformed this team from the ground up itā€™s beautiful we have a qb we have a dline! We have sick linebackers wrs te and oline!

  49. BucEmUp Says:

If kicking ass means giving up 24 -31 points a game, losing the time of possession and humping Palm trees , hell yeah get ready for some hard core ass kicking!!!!!

  50. Owlykat Says:

Jimmy Jackā€”first I know he didnā€™t draft for needs because he has stated in an interview that he has seen teams get in trouble when they draft for need which is why he picks based on BPA. I also have noticed that he has mostly ignored holes that have piled up on our Offensive and Defensive Lines in the past despite the fact he was a lineman himself at Nebraska. That is exactly why he now has tried to fill the holes in Free Agency this year that he has long neglected. Could it be he is just so responding because his neck is on the line?
I think so. Smart GMs build from the trenches then back and when they get a LT which is critical to protect their QB they spend a first round pick for their LT.
But not Licht. He got his LT in the second round and has turned a blind eye to his poor aptitude for pass blocking ever since.

  51. JonBuc Says:

LOL Lichtā€™s Out. Youā€™re batting .333 as the GM fella. Iā€™ve been told you can say or do whatever you want the last day a person is on the job. Perhaps this is a case of doing so in the last season. Your pal Jon Robinson was rightfully extended…I bet heā€™d hire you as a scout when itā€™s all said and done.

  52. NFLNut Says:

    Division: 3-3
    AFC North: 2-2
    NFC East: 2-2
    Bears: 1-0
    49’ers: 1-0

    Final Record: 9-7

  53. TOM Says:

Careful Jason, tour letting your alligator mouth overload your tadpole ass again.
