JPP And His Hand

March 23rd, 2018

Resilient.

It’s like something out of a twisted horror movie, though it is true and all too real.

Not quite three years ago, new Bucs defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, then a member of the New York Giants, was at a cookout in Deerfield Beach celebrating the Fourth of July when, while trying to light a fireworks explosive, it exploded in his hand, mangling it terribly.

What is left is a partial thumb and three partial fingers. It is gross.

While JPP was at his presser today to introduce the USF product to the local pen and mic club, whether subconsciously or consciously, JPP seemed to be always trying to hide his hand. It could have been just a habit he formed.

Anyway, what would have ended many an athletic career didn’t for JPP. He returned to play in eight games that year, his first game back was against the Bucs at the Den of Depression.

JPP was asked about bouncing back from the horrific injury. His eyes began to water and he had to clear his throat. He apologized for getting emotional and confessed he always does when speaking of the injury.

Like a man, he never dodged the subject and fully answered the question. In fact, JPP went into an inspiring detail of what drove him after the accident.

JPP’s father has been blind for decades, truly a handicap. JPP mentioned his father never, ever complains about his condition, though it is understandable he would have every right to complain about the awful hand he was dealt. It was his father’s determination that JPP said motivated him not only to return to the football field, but to get back to the level he was prior to the accident.

Jason Licht added that he and Dirk Koetter were on a mission this offseason to find players who have “resiliency.” He added that JPP’s history is nothing but resilient.

I thought he was fooling around with fireworks with his friends, but I respect a guy who uses his dad as his motivation. Much respect, JPP90

  2. Dave Pear Says:

    Joe,
it is understandable he would have every right to complain about the awful hand he was dealt.
Are you talking about JPP’s hand?

  3. bucs_365 Says:

I always had this impression of JPP as a prima donna but I guess that’s not quite true… Looking forward to seeing him in a Bucs uni.

  4. JAB83 Says:

    #WillGholston=Resiliency

    JPP is his Rosetta Stone…

Go gettem WG and make Tampa Great Again!!!

    Signed THE12THMAN

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

He’s a good guy. Hard worker.

But he’s gonna be hit hard with the heat down here. NY/NJ is nowhere near like Tampa.

  6. Dave Pear Says:

    Bonzai,

He played college ball at USF.
I’m sure he knows what to expect.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I would suspect he won’t be eating Ws…..I do know this……he knows how to put his hands up and bat a pass down….hopefully he’ll lead the Dline to great things….

  8. AlteredEgo Says:

It’ll be great work for Donovan Smith…

  9. darin Says:

He is better than I thought he’d be after that accident. Looks like he is motivated. Love it. This smitty D needs qb pressure in the worst way.

  10. Bird Says:

He is from Deerfield beach area. Lived in Florida his whole life except as a pro. Probably trains down here in offseason.

Sure he knows what Florida summers are like.

  11. Bucsfan1988 Says:

Hey Altered, JPP will be great work for the RT, not LT. he’s an LDE. He’ll be going against Dotson…

  12. Pit Says:

And still ppl say it would have been better to trade for the elderly woman pusher.

I will take JPP all day.

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

He should give Demar an inferiority complex

  14. unbelievable Says:

Pretty cool story about his father being the motivation.

Re: Bennett- I’m still wondering how a 66yr old paraplegic woman works a security guard?

  15. DB55 Says:

    Joe

We already found a solution for him. He’s gonna wear a hook on his hand. Aaaaarrrrrgh!

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Good news! We won’t have to listen to Joe complain about letting Bennett go anymore!

    Per PFT:
The Seahawks “were not aware” that Houston police were investigating Michael Bennett before they traded him to the Eagles, Gregg Bell of The News Tribune reports.

A Houston grand jury indicted Bennett on a felony charge of injury of the elderly, stemming from an incident at last year’s Super Bowl. The charge carries a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

  17. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I bet the Bennett thing is resolved before the Winston thing…

  18. feelthepewterpower Says:

Good vid, Joe, on JPP’s comeback…love his attitude! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZef-MvW0Rk

  19. JimmyJack Says:

Them fingers do come in handy for tackling so he might give us a letdown and miss a play or two. He was already able to play with that big soft club and no use of his hand at all so he can getter done.

Looking forward to seeing JPP in pewter!! He has shown no signs of slowing down. I like a player who is hungry to play and doesn’t want to miss 1 snap.

  20. WutdaBucisthis Says:

Damn…can it be? Falling. victim. to. Trade. down. crowd.
With the Bills. Vea @12 Landry @28
    Best RB with our 2nd
    Sony for me
THEN Licht can cap off what is arguably his GREATEST off season
    #TRENCHWARFARE

  21. DB55 Says:

Hey you guys remember when gmc was out for wreaks because he hurt his hand? I’m just saying. #IceCream

We need Ayers back so you losers can get a glimpse of what real ballers look like and how they play.

  22. unbelievable Says:

    Dave Pear-

I’m not following… what does that have to do with an elderly paraplegic working as a security guard?

  23. SB Says:

Howdy UB! You and I are in the same boat on the paraplegic thing.

  24. unbelievable Says:

Haha yea SB it doesn’t make much sense.

Hope all is well with you man.

  25. Dave Pear Says:

    unbelievable,

It means you cannot discriminate about hiring.
She was probably assigned a position on the field and told only authorized personnel could have access through her gate.
I am sure she did not think someone would blast through her to get to the field.
It is not like being a bouncer at a nightclub.

  26. OneBucPerson Says:

In all honesty she was probably an usher, not a security guard.

  27. Bucballbaby84 Says:

I bet there will be fireworks on that side of the line during training camp lol

  28. DB55 Says:

I know ya love to convict certain people with the quickness unlike the troubled youth that plague our society. You guys fight everyone so these troubled youths don’t have their rights taken away but are so ready to suspend jw and others off of hearsay. My goodness a red county has indicted a BLM activist color my shocked!!!!

    Well looky looky here:

“I call BS on the arrest of Michael Bennett for felony assault.

    Complete BS.

I literally had to call to ask what they were accusing him of.

They are saying 14 months ago his hand touched a woman’s shoulder at the Super Bowl as he walked on to the field.

That’s it.” – identity concealed cuz I feel like concealing it.

  29. SB Says:

All is Great here Sir! Leaving Monday for a Skiing vacation in the Tetons with the fam. Hopefully I don’t break anything. 🙂 Best to you and yours!

Bucs-wise,I am ok with what Licht has done so far except for the fact that I really wanted Chubb. Now I think it will be Ward, Fitz, or James with 7.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

As we learn more about all these passrushers Im starting to think we got the better player then Quinn/Bennett.

With the news on Bennett you can now disregard him.

Between JPP and Quinn I’ll take JPP all day. He has been very durable on the field, Quinn has not. The other huge factor in JPPs favor is that he has great experience defending the run as as well as Rushing the QB. Quinn was taken off the field for a lot of run defense.

Quinn has two years on JPP is the one thing in his favor. Only their on field performance will determine which guy was the better trade target. We shall see in 2-3 years.

  31. SB Says:

Yes Jimmy, also he is basically back Home. Best place to give your all in what is probably the last contract of your career. Hope he has Pride! I think he does.

  32. JimmyJack Says:

DB55…..I just appreciate the Bennett drama going to Philly. That’s a good argument to hear from afar. Really would not be fun to be on either side of a fan war between that guy on our putrid defense.

  33. JimmyJack Says:

Yeah SB. I heard he played college at USF so he all his home games at RJS!!

How cool is that for him to return to his old “stomping grounds”?

The media should ask him who has his old locker. He has to get back IMO.

  34. SB Says:

His hometown is Deerfield Beach as well I believe.

  35. Alan Says:

Your in good hands with JPP just like allstate

  36. unbelievable Says:

Anyways back to JPP- I liked his presser.

He still sounds hungry, and was always saying “we” when talking about the team. Seems like he’s anxious to prove he can still be the same elite guy that he was before the injury.

  37. sj_bucsfan Says:

Am I the only person that thinks this might be NOT the best move for the Bucs? I have seen too many times “older” stars come to Tampa to stink up the joint! Just sayin…

  38. DanBucsFan Says:

DB55 ……..Are you saying Bennet is being wrongly accuse because he is a black activist

  39. DanBucsFan Says:

All the JPP jokes are asinine. Come on fellas seriously enough already, got it out of your systems.

  40. DanBucsFan Says:

    Sj_bucsfan

Im sure your not only one. But I think most of us are cool with it mainly due to our need at De, also because this is only year guaranteed on his contract.

  41. SeattleBuc Says:

With only 1 year guaranteed this is a low risk high reward for the Bucs. If he maxes his prodution there will be a lot of happy Bucs fans. Let it ride guys.

    ———————-
Yes, I’m keeping that as a possibility. Believe it or not cops lie ALL THE TIME.

  43. gp Says:

    DB
That is an extremely bigoted statement
Maybe you should step back and take a long hard look at yourself and your dislike/distrust/hate for the Police Officers who put their lives on the line to protect you and yours regardless of the skin color of all parties involved

I hate to think of what you say quietly to yourself whenever you hear of an officer being killed in the line of duty

  45. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Speaking for Pablo

“Pablo is disturbed by the way Hason Pierre Paul’s hand is described…..for Hesus’ sake….Hason PP isn’t Quasimoto (hunchback of Notre Dame)…..he went to USF….he is not the Elephant Man….Pablo wants his Buc amigos to lay off of Hason PP…..after all Hason wouldn’t have traded for Hason if he couldn’t play….and he didn’t trade for him because he was pretty. After all would you rather have George Hohnson, Hack Smith or Ghost Hohnson?”

  46. JAB83 Says:

@SJ and others who share your concerns.

The science that should help you all sleep better is familiar to most. However the way it works is a bit of a mystery (kinda)

It called “The Law of Averages.”

Its what we rode to the Super Bowl when we won. The 12th Man had enough. We got our coach and we willed our team to win. However, we ALL KNEW our time had come.

This time around, the same is true of what JL has done for our team. The man is simply made for his job.

We all sensed it going into last year. He had assembled a great group and gave us stability. Yet he failed again??? HMMMM…

Well a wise man would continue to do what made him successful. Understanding the process is not what is broke.

Simply put. You win some, you lose some.

At the end of the day this means. We are in for a wild ride once this thing gets going. This I know because I am a fan… NOT A GM, COACH OR PLAYER…
    ,
    I am the 12th Man…

We ball out with our team win or lose.

We are sports men. We don’t cry when we lose. We only look to get better with the teammate our organization provides. We don’t complain to the bosses… We just continue being the best 12th man in the league…

We do our job, we help our team, we our FAMILY!!!

  47. Bucsfan951 Says:

@db: just like when Bennett lied about the cops in Vegas? You mean those lies?

  48. JAB83 Says:

Oh and let me add to this Bennett and Quin train of GOOD football debate while I’m on a role.

FOR NO GOOD REASON, Mr. Bennett put his hands on someone. THAT’S A FACT that Mr. Bennett wont even trying to deny. Note, I use Mr. because I actually like the guy. He is weird like me. That’s why I know he just “didn’t realize his strength.” Still FOR NO GOOD REASON, Mr Bennett put his hands on someone…. Shame Shame, #DumbyIsWhatDumbyDoes

@Joe, to ever say we let this “joker” (ie, wild card) go for no good reason again. Im gonna ask you to explain…

As far as RQ vs JPP. We got the better player. Case Closed. Next story.

And only because it clearly is an emotional topic for JPP. I wont make anymore Half Handed Remarks or Joke… Made Love For JPP and HIS DETERMINATION TO BE GREAT!!!

  49. SteveK Says:

I hope Bennett is not in trouble, like his Vegas story. Sad. He’s a great football player.

  50. LakeLand Says:

    😡

  51. LakeLand Says:

    Not for Michael Bennett 🗽

  52. Juggernautical Says:

Let’s finish this line. I’d cut Sweezy and his $7M+ and go after Suh with an offer around $12M. Curry, JPP, McCoy and Suh…..that’s your 3rd Down Lineup

  53. Bigtruck Says:

You know Joe I consume a lot of your content And, for the most part, it’s top quality stuff. I patronize your sponsors and spend a good portion of my week reading your articles and listening to Monday morning Joe and Ira’s podcast (Bucs Incensored is just awful. I have no interest in hearing grown men scream vulgarities to the top of their lungs like teenage idiots for the sake of hearing themselves yell) It has gotten a little annoying hearing Lee talk for the last few weeks on Ira’s podcast about how the Bucs aren’t interested or don’t care about building an edge rush (how ridiculous an idea, for a professional who covers the team for a living to blatantly suggest that Jason Licht and the Bucs don’t care about edge rushers) but this article is about as tasteless as I’ve seen on your site. As if everyone who even remotely has followed the NFL for the last few years didn’t know that JPP lost part of his hand in a fireworks accident, yet you HAD to write an article about how “monstrous” his hand is and how it’s “like something out of a horror movie”. You note that he hides his hand, even if subconsciously. Any moderately intelligent human being would recognize that as an insecurity and any remotely empathetic human being WOULDN’T continually point out his handicap for the sake of another post to drive traffic to your sponsors (you have a job, we all do, that’s not my issue). I’d rather you write fewer articles with better content. We all know he lost part of his hand several years ago. It’s not news. This article is shameful.

  55. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

Anyone who doesn’t love this aquisition is honestly a freakin loon.

Best DL pickup for this franchise since Simeon Rice hands down.

  56. Joe Says:

    Bigtruck:

You interpreted this story completely the wrong way.

  57. Eric Says:

The guy has overcome an obstacle and resumed his NFL career, which is testament to his strength and courage, a trait Licht admires.

Decent summary of the story Joe?

As for Bennett Grand Jury indictments are serious business, I’d be real surprised if he only touched someone on the shoulder. But let due process unfold. He is presumed innocent. A concept rarely respected any more.

  58. unbelievable Says:

yea bigtruck, I think you totally misread what Joe was saying (and I love to give the Joes a hard time when they deserve it 😝)

@SB- Didn’t see your reply earlier. Upcoming trip sounds awesome, have fun!

I also wanted Chubb, but who knows who will be there when we would pick. I wouldn’t mind doubling down on DE, or I’d be okay with trading down a bit if we can stock some more draft picks. Consensus seems to be there is not a lot of surefire “1st round” talent this year

  60. BushidoEvans Says:

Did you guys know that Bennett donates every penny that he makes from endorsements and jersey sales? Whether he did it or not that does not condemn him as a bad person overall. Maybe he just made a dumb mistake?I’m sure he didn’t shove an elderly disabled woman on purpose, come on man get real. His actions whatever they were will be dealt with one way or another, but he should not be torn down as a whole. We are all humans, each of us has done good and bad. This society has become a sea of bad people pointing the finger at everyone else. It’s easy to be holier than thou through a computer screen, when the people you’re talking to don’t know your own skeletons just saying 😁.

  61. Joe Says:

The guy has overcome an obstacle and resumed his NFL career, which is testament to his strength and courage, a trait Licht admires.

Decent summary of the story Joe?

    Pretty decent, yes.

Says a lot about him overcoming this and what kind of a person he is.

  62. firethecannons Says:

I love this signing! The injury made it clear to him and to all of us what kind of a man he is, I doubt it has a negative effect on his sack total. I appreciate his openness with his new fanbase. JPP seems good with being a Buc too, awesome job Jason Licht!

3rd round pick defensive end or JPP==no brainer

  63. Duke Says:

    GP,

I don’t have to agree with DB but I will listen to what the man has to say.
He says cops lie everyday….then you call him a bigot and instead of rebutting his claim you bring in something that is irrelevant to the discussion. Cops protect Americans. Black Yellow green cops protect the group. True .

Here’s the thing that really is the wedge activists seek to exploit.
Black people are a million times more familiar with dealing with the police than whites. Again, generalizations but the outliers aren’t driving anything. If you have many many experiences with police and the situations are more serious than a traffic ticket you have a much more realistic view of police. Then a guy who has been pulled over once or twice in a safe low crime area. If you are black
These interactions between the two sides are not always pleasant as the avg white guy living in south tampa. The cops treat you different for a reason.
The problem is that the reason is dismissed as easily on one side as the other.

Look, in your profession are you more familiar or less than the person who has zero experiences with your chosen field? Basically Blacks are the most experienced players in the game….It’s smart to listen to their experiences vs your own idealistic notions about how the system is on paper.

  64. Duke Says:

    Bushido,

Good to bring up a little information that challenges the black and white views that people have in these situations.

  65. LUVMYBUCS Says:

  67. Realbucfan941 Says:

    Db55,

You just roll with your options on things and ignore the facts. It wasn’t the cops lying. He pushed an old crippled lady out of her chair. And proceeded to say “you must not know who I am. I can buy this stadium. I’m going on that field” something to that extent. We already have video of him lying about what happened in Vegas. In this case what happened in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas. Your boy’s a bum now. Complete scum, his brother isn’t too far behind. But hey, just keep them blinders on.

  68. Joseph Mamma Says:

How’s he going to sign his contract?

  69. Bigtruck Says:

    JOE,

Let’s say I took the tone of the article wrong, which very well may be. That’s not my issue with the article. My issue is that you felt the need to write the article in the first place. Again, his hand is not news and I feel like it’s done in poor taste to continually bring his hand into the conversation. Nothing as terrible as what some of the idiots on here are making bad jokes about his hand but again I just don’t like the idea of the article. Still love the network, just not this piece.

  70. JonBuc Says:

Buccaneer BrownEye…Buc Insider…and all the bluster…sums up his “knowledge” in one sentence:

“ But he’s gonna be hit hard with the heat down here. NY/NJ is nowhere near like Tampa.” -referring to former USF Bull JPP…you know…the other occupants of Raymond James Stadium. Pure gold!

  71. Joe Says:

    Bigtruck

My issue is that you felt the need to write the article in the first place.

It is kind of hard not too. Like ignoring the elephant in the room. The subject was even brought up in his press conference and he addressed it. In Joe’s eyes, that was the highlight of the press conference.
