Chucky Hung Dirk Koetter Out To Dry

March 1st, 2018

“Go# d$%^&* if I don’t look out for No. 1, who the f&^* will? Jiminy Christmas!”

So yeah, Joe lobbed the first question at Chucky yesterday morning when the greatest coach in Bucs history took the podium at the NFL combine to meet with the NFL media.

Joe is pretty damned confident he woke Chucky up.

There was a pause of silence after Chucky had his pleasantries to open the press conference. It was almost like folks were scared. So Joe thought, “What the hell, let’s go.”

When Joe asked Chucky at what point did he disregard returning to the Bucs as coach, Chucky glared at Joe for a brief moment as if saying to himself, “Who let this SOB in here?”

Chucky shot an answer at Joe, “When I was fired.”

Touche!

That’s an awesome answer and it drew chuckles among the near 100 reporters (maybe more) who gathered around Chucky’s podium. So Joe fired back with a follow up, asking if Chucky was saying he never had any negotiations with Team Glazer in recent months about returning to the Bucs sideline.

“No. Nope,” Chucky said.

Well, frankly that’s difficult for Joe to swallow. But let’s take Chucky at face value, shall we?

If Chucky wants us to believe he didn’t even send a text or an e-mail to anyone fronting Team Glazer, if not Team Glazer themselves, then it is very clear to Joe that Chucky shat all over Bucs coach Dirk Koetter.

Look, Chucky lived in Tampa until just recently. It’s not like he doesn’t know the world is spinning outside his office. He knew full well rumors were rampant in the Tampa Bay area that he was going to take over for Koetter in 2018.

Local and national airwaves were full of the rumors. If radio hosts were not calling for Chucky to return, listeners’ phone calls sure were. Hell, a local website, citing inside intel from Chucky’s lair, had Chucky all but crowned as Bucs coach.

Then Chucky does his job in December as BSPN analyst on Monday Night Football, when the Bucs hosted the Dixie Chicks. Chucky very, very, easily could have used that platform to tell the world, “Despite all the rumors out there, I haven’t talked to the Bucs about coaching and the Bucs are in good hands with Dirk Koetter. He will turn things around.”

But what did Chucky do? He didn’t say a damned thing.

In other words, Chucky let Koetter twist in the wind. And Joe knows for a fact that those rumors were heard within the walls of One Buc Palace and created tension. How could they not?

So the next time Chucky waxes poetic about how he honors and respects the coaching profession, just know that he’s full of it. Chucky honors and respects one thing: Chucky.

If you believe Chucky never had one word of discussion with Team Glazer about returning to the Bucs, then Chucky easily could have done the right thing and saved Koetter all the public humiliation.

Instead, Chucky was counting his millions from Mark Davis, figuring out if he should invest in a proposed five-star Las Vegas golf course condo complex.

Yup. Great article. Completely true. Chucky absolutely loves him some Chucky and after that some Chucky and coming in a close third, Chucky.

  2. mike10 Says:

I’m curious if those rumors about a tiff between Jameis and Koetter, came from Grudens camp.

  3. tmaxcon Says:

Watching gruden fail will be entertaining at least bucs won’t be alone with thier permanent residency in nfc south basement raiders will grace thier division basement for years to come as will the bucs.

@Joe … “Chucky honors and respects one thing: Chucky.” And therein lies the bottom line. Next.

And there you have it, Ladies and Gentleman. A post from TMax that does not mention Gerald McCoy. I mean, sure, it’s grammatically flawed, but its a step in the right direction…well, maybe not. After all, he’s still acting like the troll he is.

  8. ben Says:

It was NEVER Gruden”s job to defend Koetter..never …That’s up to the buc’s owners . Blaming Gruden is unfair.

    ______________
    You misspelled Dungy

  10. AtlBucs Says:

Chucky very, very, easily could have used that platform to tell the world, “Despite all the rumors out there, I haven’t talked to the Bucs about coaching and the Bucs are in good hands with Dirk Koetter. He will turn things around.

Why would Gruden make a statement that he and the Bucs were not in negotiations? Had he done so, do you think he would Jane received the offer that he got?

  11. tmaxcon Says:

Dungy now thier is a freaking gutless clown who failed in Tampa and wasted whyces hall of famers.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

    Sb

Crackwhores have more integrity than that hypocrite clown dungy… 2 playoff wins in 6 years is beyond laughable considering the defense why He handed the loser…

Thankfully gruden cleaned up dungy mess fast.

  13. chargedcbh Says:

WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!! All these stories or reports mean nothing. Nobody is going to tell you the truth, your just speculating based on nothing. You do the same thing EVER off season, you can cut and paste the questions and responses. I’LL SAVE EVERYBODY THE TIME, on Draft day! YES THIS IS THE GUY WE WANTED. HE SHOULD FIT RIGHT IN.

  14. The Buc Realist Says:

Did Coach Gruden Hung Head Coach Koetter out to dry, or did the Glazer Boys!!!!!!

And just because he knew that he was not going to consider the Bucs, it does not mean that his agent told that to the Bucs and used that for leverage for his Raiders Job!!!!!! All the agent could have told the Bucs ownership that Coach Gruden was “serious about coming back to coach football” !!!!!!!!!!!

To simplify for the “sheep” The Bucs were used as leverage without being told that they were not in option!!!!!! It happens all the time!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. HowToSpellRhonde Says:

Bull$hit. Coaches don’t need former coaches patronizing or endorsing them in their jobs. If Koetter was offended, then he needs to grow thicker skin.

  16. miken Says:

So Gruden is to Blame because the Bucs stink and he didn’t go effort to stop any rumors. Now Gruden is a raider and doesn’t want to stand up at the combine and talk about the past…. Man, us Bucs sound like little 9 year old girls. The guy let things play out. All the guys have powerful agents so they don’t get involved. You should of asked him if any of the Glazers contacted him personally.

  17. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

OK, let’s say I basically want Koetter’s job, am I really gonna say “Koetter will get things turned around” ?
    C’mon

  18. Waterboy Says:

Wasn’t Chucky once accused by players of talking out of both sides of his mouth? He’s a snake that’s nothing new.

  19. zzbucs Says:

    100% irrelevant…..

  20. Joe Blahak Says:

    testing 1-2-3 …comment police?

  21. Joseph Mamma Says:

Joe maybe next time go all Tom Cruise from a Few Good Men and follow up with shouting “I want the Truth!” That might be more effective and if nothing else very dramatic.

  22. Pint Says:

Gruden may not have had discussions with the Bucs, but his agent sure did.

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

It is just amazing to see how many distractions the owners threw at their own team and coaching staff in 2017!!!!!!!!!!

I hope that the Glazers “realized” this from the past year!!!!!! And that they broach the subject in their once a year interview!!!!!!

I am interested to see what this team can do without the owner throwing distractions and roadblocks at their own team!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

None of this matters. Don’t mean nothin. The bigger question is…Who do we get to replace the dynamic tandum of Koetter and Pressbox Smitty?

  25. Eric Says:

Or the Glazer Boys, who actually own the football team, could have dispelled the rumors.

Or Koetter could have done a better job of coaching and not put himself in position of rumors about his demise.

Or the team itself could have stepped up and played better and helped the coach keep his job.

Nah, its all Chucky’s fault for not helping out the franchise that fired him.

Typical ludicrous Chucky bashing over nothing.

  26. Pepsi Says:

Yes so we dont call him Saint Chucky.. Hed rather let the rumors swirl because its in his own self interest. Obviously. You guys have been hitting him with this criticism for months and you persistence in this criticism, which nobody but yourselves really care about, comes across as a vendetta. Can you write about what made you guys have a this vendetta, that’s sounds like it could be interesting.

  27. LargoBuc Says:

Dungy a hypocrite and a clown? Say what you will about his coaching or even his hall of fame bust being questionable but pretty sure that every player that Dungy coached hold him in a very high regard. He is a class act. And the opinion of former players who actually know him means alot more than some guy who regular trolls a comment section of a local website.

  28. IsrBuc Says:

why should he care about koetter? why should he bother?
not denying probably haleped his negotiations with the raiders.

  29. lambchop Says:

Just a reminder – The NFL is a business. Why would Jon lay his hand down for the Raiders (or anyone else) to see his cards? It’s called leverage. He used it to his advantage. Make no mistake, if the Bucs gave a better deal than the Raiders, Jon would have all but forgotten the past and embraced the only franchise that he won a SB with. It would have been a tearful reunion with his heart always in Florida. Chucky ain’t no fool.

But, I’m glad he didn’t come back. His reputation building a franchise is horrible and he desires too much power. I hate seeing him in Black and Silver cuz we won a SB with him, but I’m sure most fans will get over it even if he have another terrible season.

  30. Eric Says:

I’m sure if JoeBucsfan.com were up for sale and there were rampant rumors of a potential buyer willing to pay millions, Joe would do whatever he could to quash it……….

the vendetta has been going on for years.

even after they all got what they wanted and Chucky was fired. Its been ten years, let it go.

  31. Joe Blahak Says:

had a long speech on Chucky that was somehow omitted from comment thread…basically, he’s a slimeball, double speak, LIAR

  32. JJBucFan Says:

I would love to beat him in the Super Bowl!! Anyone know a coach that can get get more than 9 wins so we can get into the playoffs? I’m sick of these re-tread coaches, we need new, young innovative ideas on offense and defense. There is too much film available for these old schemes. On defense it is called NFL Films, on offense it is called my 13 year old’s Pee Wee football playbook. (I don’t like our current coaches if you couldn’t tell). Serious question though, How is it possible that our DB coach and ST coach did not get fired? IMO, Dirk and Smitty are happy to steal one more year out of the Glazers. They have watched Anthony Collins, Ghost Johnson, Revis, Sweezy, Fatty Baker, Lovie and TJ Ward do it and they decided, why work when we can get paid to do nothing? How about giving our next coaches incentive clauses in THEIR contracts? Just a thought.

  33. The Buc Realist Says:

It all falls on the owners, who if they wanted could have stated earlier, instead of hanging the coaching staff out to dry!!!!!!!!!

It is just amazing to see how many distractions the owners threw at their own team and coaching staff in 2017!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. Eric Says:

People who are good at their profession don’t get distracted.

  35. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    Totally disagree with this article.
It’s like saying that it’s up to the mistress to let the married couple know the affair ain’t happening.

Koetter’s problem isn’t Gruden, it’s the fact of whether or not the Glazers wanted to get in bed with Gruden. They’re the ones who let the situation fester within the walls of their home.

It would have been idiotic and damning of Gruden to say anything. He used the Glazer fueled leverage and kept his options open until the last minute. Nothing wrong at all with that when living the coaching bachelor life.

  36. Justafan Says:

Congratulations, you posted another silly “Chucky is the Devil” story and the area yokels that love to parrot the bull that Gruden “won with Dungy’s team” will lap it up.

Pro football is a business. Jon Gruden was earning a solid dime as a commentator with zero external pressure to perform. He could have carried that career another couple of decades just like Madden did. He’s a coach. He wanted to get back to coaching, but he also knew from experience that coaching is a far more demanding gig, so he wanted to earn big bucks to go back.

How in the literal hell is it Gruden’s job to quell rumors idiots drum up in their fantasies just for more content to click on? The premise is silly, and the article is stupid. Sorry you got so butthurt that Gruden glared at you in response to your question.

  37. Not there yet Says:

I don’t get it I don’t get the logic. It’s not his fault dork sucks as a coach and can’t score points with this talented offense yeah he didn’t have a run game but who decided to play Doug Martin.

It’s not grudens responsibility to rescue dork he’s a grown man. Keith tandi saved his job the first year and the team woke up and started playing hard after they realized he could be fired this past season. No blowouts after the Chucky rumors with a zero passes rush. Don’t blame Chucky because he won’t coach any better without the grudens rumors

  38. Frank Pillow Says:

Chucky played the G-boys like a fiddle. Parading around the building like the messiah during the Ring of Honor presser, all geared-up and proclaiming to be 100% Buc. The optics were had Joel, Brian, Ed, et al. drooling all over themselves and Chucky to get him back. They were the ones who allowed Dirk to hang out there by allowing the rumors to perpetuate to a never fervor leading to the giant ego-stroking half time RoH event. Chucky was never over his ouster. Never will be. He leveraged all of the noise to secure a hell of a deal for himself–wait for it–at the Bucs’ expense.

All that being said, it’s tough to sit here, post yesterday’s combine presser, and feel like this team is as close as Jason thinks it is. We’ve been mired in bad football for a decade now. Brutal.

  39. Gambelero Says:

Credit where credit is due guys. 100 reporters and Joe got the first question off.

  41. Nick2 Says:

This is like the college coaches that claim their agents were never in discussion. Wow so Gruden wants to throw more dirt on Bucs fans??? I mean to me the Glazers must have been way off the asking price for Gruden not to want to be able to open his door and drive to his job instead of flying coast to coast on a regular basis. Did the Glazers give him an insulting offer in return or did they never even make an offer?? The better question would have been “Did anyone representing you have any discussions with anyone representing the Bucs?” To say what he is saying sounds bitter again but it wouldn’t surprise me if the Glazers were only in the “running” for show. Its not a coincidence that the Bucs are consistently coached by coaches with little or no head coaching experience in the NFL. Can you say cheap???? I just did. Now go figure why we consistently underperforming hmmmm too cheap to get a quality experienced coach.

  42. Eric Says:

Not only was Chucky fired, they replaced him with Raheem Morris.

Has every right to be pissed throughout eternity.

  43. D-Rome Says:

    lol…Good morning, Lee!

After listening to the Ira Kaufman podcast I’ve been able to determine which Joe is writing for the most part.

  44. Phil Says:

Gruden didn’t let Koetter twist in the wind. Gruden’s job isn’t to reassure Koetter. If Koetter needed reassurance he could go to the Glazers if he felt the need. Gruden only job is to get himself the biggest contract he can for himself. I think he did that. I’m sure Gruden doesn’t give a rats a$$ about Koetter.

  45. Mr. Ed Says:

    Hey Joes —

Yours is a butt-hurt take. And naive. What the hell else did you expect Gruden to say publicly since he is now the Raiders coach? Furthermore, look at how you worded the question. You asked Gruden if he had any discussions, etc. He said “no, nope.” That is the guaranteed truth. What you didn’t ask is, did his agent have any discussions?

Now, the other part. Last I checked, Koetter is the head coach of the Bucs and was declared so before Gruden signed with the Raiders. So Gruden did not leave Koetter in the wind to twist, although if he could have stuck it in the Glazers who fired him and soiled their Cheerios, of course he would want to do that. If I were him, after the Glazers pulled the most moronic brain dead knee jerk move in franchise history by firing Gruden, of course I wouldn’t be coming back.

Gruden played it like a Meistro. Joes, not so much.

  46. DoNUTS Says:

Gruden is well versed in media relations. His ego is so big he has to pay for the seat next to him in first class. Great questions JBF as I like to see him wiggle.

  47. pick6 Says:

yes, chucky should have dispensed with all the leverage that got him $100 million guaranteed by publicly declaring there was no need to compete for his services as a head coach. makes lots of sense to me.

after the fact, denying contact actually bolsters koetter more than gruden. i think it would have hung koetter out to dry far more if he publicly confirmed that koetter’s bosses were keenly interested in dumping him late in the 2017 season

  48. SOEbuc Says:

Negotiations?? Sounds like he has a large hatred for the Glazers. Even though they said all that BS at the Chucky ring of honor tribute. With large smiles on Chucky and Glazers at ring of honor- Glazers: “Okay everyone just keep smiling this is almost over with.” Chucky: “Man I can’t stand you people. Can’t wait to whoop your ass in the game that gets me into the playoffs and win another Super Bowl.”

SO, SO HAPPY YOU POSTED THIS BIG HOG HAYNES!^

LOVIE SMITH WON EIGHT GAMES IN TWO YEARS WOTH THE BUCS AND WON FOVE GAMES THE LAST TWO YEARS WOTH THE UNIVERISTY OF ILLINOIS, TOTALING 13 WINS THE LAST FOUR YEARS!

DIRK KOETTER WON NINE GAMES HIS FORST YEAR AND FIVE LAST YEAR, THUS PROVING HE IS LITERALY TWICE THE WINNER LOSER LOVIE IS AS HE HAS WON MORE GAMES IN TWO EARS OF THE NFL AND LOVIE HAS WON HALF AS MANY SPLIT BETWEEN THE NFC SOUTH AND THE BIG TEN.

THERE WAS NO BACKSTABBING! ANY FAN WITH A SET OF EYES AND NO BONER FOR LOVIE SMITH CAN SEE HIS WAYS ARE DREADFUL AND HE NEEDED TO GO!

CMON BIG HOG HAYNES! BULLSH!T ON YOUR THEORY.

KOETTER MIGHT NOT BE THE ANSWER, BUT HE IS TWOCE AS CLOSE TO BEING THE ANSWER THAN LOSER LOVIE WAS WITH HIS FRIENDS AND FAMILY PLAN!

And, yes, I am yelling my rebuttal to you bc that is absolute nonsense to the finest degree!

  50. SOEbuc Says:

“Yeah, the Bucs wanted me and were going to fire Dirk and hire me but I won a lot in Oakland and they made an offer I couldn’t refuse” That’s about what happened and you want him to come out and say that? So he’s a liar if he says what he said because he won’t embarass the franchise and Dirk.

  55. AceofAerospace Says:

Gruden kept his mouth shut and scored a $100 million contract good for him. The Glazers fired him. F*** them.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

I counter that by saying Gruden, in this scenario, saved Dirk’s job. It wasn’t until all the Gruden talk started at the end of the season that Dirk finally seemed to finally reengage with the office and actually mix it up. The MNF game was by far Dirk’s best example of offensive playcalling for the year, and there’s no way that wasn’t fueled by Dirk’s desire not to be embarrassed in front of the guy who might replace him.

Who knows with Gruden, he loves all the attention that comes with bring the belle of the ball, so for him to shoot down anything means less attention on himself. If he held a grudge perhaps he loved hanging the Glazers out to dry. Then again he never shoot down any coaching rumor ever so there’s that.

  57. Bucko40 Says:

Anyone that thought Gruden and was returning to the Bucs as head coach was out of their mind. The Glazerhouse Boys guaranteed that when they Fired him. Anyone thought Jameis Winston was the type of quarterback Gruden would want is also out of their minds. Those two egos would’ve been a circus to watch in Tampa. His agent and PR team use the Bucs to get the deal that he wanted with the Raiders. He was never ever ever going to coach the Bucs again.

  60. JimmyJack Says:

Jon Gruden doesn’t owe a word about anything to anybody nor is it his responsibility to worry or give a rats azz about tabloid-type rumors.

The only words he owes anybody is the ones he said on MNF.

He doesn’t worry about anybody’s feelings or sensitivity levels. It’s parts of what makes him a successful HC.

Not that the dude is completely heartless but he’s not going to give a sh!t about petty issues when he’s got bigger fish to fry.

IMO I don’t care if he’s being honest or lying through his teeth to the media. I wanted him to come back to Tampa but he’s a Raider now so he’s basically dead to me.

  61. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

This is hilarious that I just believe what he says. The guy obviously talked to the bucs. He just doesn’t want to say it. He doesn’t want to out that he wasn’t worth that much to the team he won a SB with. He fleeced the raiders out of a $hit ton of $ that the Glazers weren’t willing to pay him.

  64. Bucs554020 Says:

You’re an idiot. It’s called Negotiating 101. Of course he didn’t defuse the Bucs rumors. Making the Raiders think the Bucs were a real possibility helped him get his $100M contract. You couldn’t figure his out by yourself? You couldn’t figure out that he could have started rumors about any other team needing a coach, versus the Bucs and their fans who welcomed him with open arms in training camp, and honored him for eternity in the Ring? –Joe

  65. mog2010 Says:

Wish you could hear the bloody questions, seriously, i have watched Bucs pressers for many years and nobody gives the questioners a mic. DOES MA NUT IN. I spend half the reply figuring out the question.

  66. Buc4life Says:

Gruden was being smart IMO. Why would you announce on national tv that you are not going to take a job when you are trying to get another owner to meet every one of your demands? Gruden doesn’t owe Dirk anything. I could see throwing shade at chucky if he let the rumors continue if he never had any intention of leaving MNF.

  67. JonBuc Says:

Gruden will forever hold a grudge for being fired. He got the equivalent of one last proper rogering with the gal who once dumped him when he played nice for a bit and was inducted into the ring of honor. He “snuck out the door” the following morning and was able to declare victory and exact revenge. Enter low self esteem bimbo Mark Davis to do whatever it took to get Gruden. Thanks for the long awaited SB title, Jon. Not sure a reunion would have worked anyways.

  68. denjoe Says:

Dirk, did himself in by putting up that crap record. Who’s fault will it be next year. Smith’s? but it won’t save Dirk, if he shat’s all over the win column again. If he would have won 8 or 9 games the chucky thing would have been moot.

  69. FortMyersDave Says:

denjoe makes a valid point: if the Bucs were 8-8 (perhaps even 7-9 if they actually finished off two of the following: Green Bay, Buffalo, Detroit, the MNF ATL game or the Carolina game where Loaf Baker gave away the W) with the issues they faced (Irma/no bye, tougher schedule, Jameis hurt amongst other things): well Chuckie would have been finding an angle to find leverage elsewhere: like Chicago, Denver, or perhaps Indy. Behind that scowl Chuckie is a very cutthroat personality who along with his entourage would use anyone or anything to pad his ego and his retirement account. Truth is, no club could compete with the glamour of landing in Vegas when the Raiders finally leave the Mausoleum in Oakland. And as far as throwing Dirk under the bus: yeah he did that but its hard to defend starting the muscle hamster, continually getting boat raced in the first half, and playing for a long FG in close games where its likely your kicker is gonna jake the kick (ala the MNF ATL game and what Koetter was setting up in the New Orleans game until Jameis confused the Saints by actually going deep and catching them with their pants down where they were playing for stopping the Bucs at the 35 and then win on a missed FG per the Koetter “2 minute script”)….

  70. Walter Seidel Says:

Did Dirkie’s feelings get hurt? Grow up.
