Bucs Vets Get Extensions

March 8th, 2018

Will return..

Lost in the freakout that no less than the reigning Super Bowl champions value the production of defensive end Michael Bennett more than the current cellar dwellers of the NFC South, and the rumors cornerback Richard Sherman and the Bucs may be dancing a dance, was three key veterans got a contract extension yesterday.

Right tackle Demar Dotson ($4.6 million), safety and fan favorite Chris Conte ($2.5 million) and special teams ace Josh Robinson ($1.75 million) had one-year options exercised on their contracts.

Since these were contract options, their salaries don’t change the Buccaneers’ available salary cap room, which is well over $70 million for 2018.

Props to those guys. Joe hates to type the following: despite the value of those three, it’s going to take more to get out of the NFC South basement.

In which world is Chris Conte a fan favorite?

He gets beaten on seemingly every play.

Dirk Koetter called him our best coverage guy.

Considering how we were the worst pass defense, you can see how were going to be back in the basement of the NFC south if we don’t change our thinking.

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

I don’t know how he does it but props to Chris Conte for somehow finding ways to keep getting paid.

  3. Easy Says:

LOL at all the Conte haters acting like he’s the worst Safety in the league. It’s a one year deal for a solid role player and special teams guy. He only gets hated on by most ppl because he’s white and that’s a fact.

  4. Easy Says:

Dotson deserved his extension. He’s been our best OL player the past 7 or 8 years

  5. IsrBuc Says:

That’s going to be the best season we had in years. No expectations – no dissapointment. Ttade GMC and LVD, get the picks and move on. Dont get anyone in FA, especially 26 and older. We are going nowhere in the next 2-3 season regardless. Get the picks and move on. No expectations no dissapointment.

  6. Jasonbucs666 Says:

This is the why the bucs stay a losing team cut the crap good players win football games crap players win 4 a year best cover guy this why the bucs won 4 games last year crap players making crap plays

  7. Reach87 Says:

I think that these are 3 good signings for the team. This isn’t MUT and you need good role players. Go Bucs!

  8. AKick'nTheBucNuts Says:

Let’s keep signing our own players that have played us into the basement for years.
    That’s a winning Buc formula.

I don’t get how just because anyone on this team “is our best” blah, blah, it does not make them the best to get us out of the dungeon. And they surely are not even the average player on other teams.

There is a complacency with the Bucs FO to think and value most of the players we have that they are starting caliber talent.

There is probably 20 players on this team, that if the Bucs released them, would never play another down in the NFL.

Time to blow this team up. Clean house.

  9. ZK Says:

    Awesome news! NOT

  10. Walter Says:

How are the Bucs going to pressure the QB?

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

Ya’ll need to stop with the Conte hate. No, he will never be mistaken for John Lynch or Ed Reid, that’s a given. However, he is a capable 2nd tier starter on a team that is void of a pass-rush and and simply has no depth.
Dotson played better last year but it’s obvious that he will need to be replaced in the near future.
If there’s a “head-scratcher” it’s Robinson. I can only assume that it is a team friendly contract and he will be retained for depth.
None of these guys move the needle but we can ill-afford to take any steps backwards in terms of this roster.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

All 3 signings are garbage when dotson is not hurt is a below average walking penalty machine who should have been upgraded years ago.

Way to keep the basement streak alive glazers

  13. pewterpirate99 Says:

Chris Conte a fan favorite??? Really, in what universe? I think this is a joke. I didn’t want him when Lovie signed him and I sure as hell don’t want him now. I don’t get all the hoopla about Demar Dotson either, he’s never impressed me. None of these signings do ANYTHING for me as a Buccaneer fan. More bad moves/signings by putz Licht. Just keep hammering those nails in your professional coffins with the Bucs Licht/Koetter. GREAT JOB!!!

  14. teacherman777 Says:

Donte is a great #4 safety.

Good special teams player. Smart player, tough tackler, and good hands.

He just has very heavy feet.

He’s not quick nor fast. Bad combo.

  15. teacherman777 Says:

    *Conte

  16. Chris Says:

Applause for extending mediocre players who get significant playing time, but would have trouble seeing the field on a good team
Typical Tampa fans sticking up for Conte….hes terrible.

Really, he’s hated on because he’s white???? YOU’RE A DUMB ASS!!!! LMAO!!!! One of my two favorite safeties of all time is JOHN LYNCH…..a white guy. Don’t start pulling an Obama and try to make racial divisions between the Buccaneer fans. Race has NOTHING to do with me not liking him. I don’t like him because he sucks. He constantly gets beat, he whiffs on tackles, and he doesn’t impress me at all.

  18. Chris Says:

The funny thing is, Conte was on twitter clowning the Browns about how many qbs they’ve had. The funny thing is, eben after this incredible strech of bad by the Browns, even after going 1-31, theyre still not close to our lofty 32nd ranked all time winning percentage….and as god awful as his defense looked last year, Contes got no business clowning anyones team.

  19. Conte Piscatelli Says:

For purposes of accuracy, I believe Josh Robinson is currently a starting cornerback. Yes our roster looks that bad right now.

And explain to me how that is a fact?? That’s your opinion. Have you taken some sort of scientific poll to come to that BRILLIANT assessment? LOL

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

…and you would replace these players with who? Ward? Didn’t work. Tandy? Disappeared. Benenoch? Right! Pamphile? Couldn’t start at guard.
We simply don’t have the horses to completely flip the roster. This is not Madden.
Yes, every last one of these positions can and should be upgraded at some point. It takes more than one off-season.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

    Bucsfanman

Replacing losers with more losers still gives more hope than continuing to lose with the same garbage… it’s not like they new guys can be worse than the career losing holdovers who have made the nfc south basement thier safe space

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

tmax- I don’t subscribe to the “if you’re going to lose, lose big” mantra. Those back-ups MUST be way worse if they can’t beat out these guys. They’ll have to do until they can be replaced with better players.

  24. I’m aTandyman Bucs Fan Says:

If it looks like poop and it smells like poop, it’s poop. These 3 will continue the Bucs tradition and if Licht don’t perform and get some people in to bolster this teams defeciecies it’s going to be another season of poop!!!!!

  25. JL47 Says:

If you’re gonna tank, it’s useless to tank down to 7 when you could easily have gone to 5th. That final saints game was a dumb move for the long term

  26. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Conte is not a bad player. He’s not elite, but he’s good and solid.

These are low-cost extensions, which means Licht is saving money for other positions.

  27. D-Rome Says:

I don’t know why people can’t stand Chris Conte. Chris Conte was in the top five for passer rating in coverage for safeties last season. No one is confusing him for Troy Polamalu but he isn’t Sabby Piscitelli either.

Speaking of which, I just found out Sabby is a professional wrestler for the WWE.

  28. WutdaBucisthis Says:

Yea, how’s that last win feeling now? Whether you wanted them to win or lose everyone is scrambling to move back or move up. Beating the Saints hurt the team. We were in prime position to grab Chubb/Barkley or move back for a kings ransom sitting @ 5.
    Meanwhile
I’ve lost hope in this team while it’s being lead by someone who was hired to be a puppet.

  29. WutdaBucisthis Says:

    C’mon Joe

  30. Bucsfanman Says:

What’s up Tandyman?! I knew you’d be in here!
    “Another season of poop”?! LOL!

  31. DBrad67 Says:

This just continues to show our willingness to be mediocre or to just piss off the supports of this team I mean Chris Conte how useful has he been but he gets an extension… I’m done see you at the draft party until then I won’t be worried about trade rumors, FA signings none of it because if they don’t as an organization don’t care then WTF!!!

  32. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Hey Bucsfanman my man!!! MAN I only hope that things can get better down in Tampa. With the ticket prices going up looks like they would want to put a quality team on the field. I just can’t get on board with Licht and what he is or isn’t doing. Anyhoo GO BUCS!!!

  33. James Craig Marlow Says:

Conte? Depth? Help coach up young ones? Not a starter!

  34. JJBucFan Says:

You need role players, Conte-good professional, young guys can learn from him- he hits like a mother, but has stopped wrapping people up for some reason- kinda the way things are going now. Josh Robinson was one of our best ST guys even though that unit sucked, (again the coach somehow kept his job, UGH!), servicable as a backup CB/nickel in this sh*tty Smitty defense. Dot is our starting RT and for $4.5, a pretty good deal even if someone comes through FA or the draft. They better get his replacement- he is always hurt.

  35. SOEbuc Says:

Conte sure as hell better not start or I’ma go find Koetter and Licht and kick em in the stones. I love Josh Robinson on special teams. He’s in the returners faces’ on punts and returns as soon as they catch the ball. Keep him as long as you can.

  36. Jason Mclaurin Says:

I like Conte coming back but Dotson not so much of a good sign. The resigning of Dermar Dotson means there will be no free agency at the Tackle position although a roster adjustment can still happen within. Like I been saying it really looks as if this team has a trade on the horizon with the Raiders or Bills or maybe both. I think this franchise is close and it’s been said by ownership and front office. See it’s about to come into perspective soon but I think they may pull the trigger on a couple of draft day deals and go young and continue to develop around Winston as we develop our cap around he and Mike Evans. They’re gunning for the draft though on the offensive line but it won’t be Nelson. I see maybe Brown from OU which hes probably getting sponsorship from McCoy who has been involved in trade talks lately but I see him retiring in Tampa Bay with money and maybe a ring unlike his other payday partner in crime Doug Martin who got released and gave out s retirement speach thanking himself for getting paid. If we can obtain Four first round picks this year which is possible if we are willing to mortgage our future for right now. I mean let’s trade our first and second round picks for two years to have about twenty picks in the draft this year and probably do some deals where the picks will be front or top loaded.

  37. godzilla13 Says:

Good moves with all three. Conte is solid and gives his all every play. Robinson has 4.30 speed and is excellent on special teams. Dotson is a no-brainer. Just hope we can get Clinton McDonald, Keith Tandy, Evan Smith and Brent Grimes signed.
