Change coming for Gerald McCoy & friends
Former Bucs commander Greg Schiano was known for his “toes-on-the-line,” walk-the-walk approach to coaching.
No excuses.
New Bucs defensive line coach Brentson Buckner has a different vision.
Buckner mentioned yesterday at One Buc Palace that he sought guidance from Mike Smith, Dirk Koetter and Jason Licht for what they wanted in their 2018 defensive line. It seems like the answer he got was flabby-gut, 90-percent-speed softies and the mentally weak need not apply.
Buckner was asked to define his D-line vision and delivered a stunning oration that rolled off his tongue as easily as Joe says, “fries, please” at Abe’s Place.
“The vision for this defensive line is to be physically and mentally tough. When you turn on that film, you’re going to see four guys recklessly attacking the guy in front of them like their lives depend on it,” Buckner said.
“When they can’t do it, the next guy behind them is going to come in and do it. We’re going to work well together. We’re going to hunt until the whistle blows. We don’t want anyone to feel comfortable. All week long, that offensive line is telling their coach and their running back and quarterback that they can run this play and block those guys. We’re going to take that personally. We’re not going to go out there looking for a fight. We’re going to go out there inviting a fight when that ball is snapped because we want to be vicious. We want our play to precede us when we walk into a stadium. We don’t want other teams to say, ‘When are the Bucs going to give us today?’ We want to them to know that when the Bucs step on the field, it’s going to be a battle. We might not win them all, but your training room is going to look like we did.”
Now the key is whether Koetter, Licht and Smith will give Buckner the power and the proverbial “big stick” to enforce his demands and deliver accountability. That’s likely what it will take to transform the defensive line from the mess it was last year — physically and mentally, as Buckner would say.

It all depends on if Koetter and Licht fix the Defense in FA and the Draft. Like the hire of Buckner but he needs the horses, so to speak, to win the battle in the trenches!

I like the mind set of Brenston Buckner, it was very clear that during the 2017 season the defense as a whole lacked mental toughness, especially on the d-line. I put the blame squarely on Mike Smith because he’s the d-coordinator, hopefully Buckner has impact some of these guys.

anyways, this is one of my favorite things that has happened so far this off-season i believe the hiring of buckner will make this team an attractive destination for free agent d-linemen(chandler jones anyone???) im excited for the future of our d-line and i believe brentson buckner will get the best out of what we have already this can only improve the effectiveness of men like GMAC and will gholston and i really do hope noah spence stays healthy for us this guy STILL has the potential to be a beast!

I like what Buckner is saying. The issue is that there’s a HUGE difference between saying and doing. We have ONE legit d-lineman so the cupboard is bare. I’ll believe it when I see it.

After last season f*cked my mind it’s a lot easier to just laugh / enjoy this off season with no expectations. I guess that’s one positive.
We should have moved Gerald McCoy last year before the trade deadline when we could have gotten more value. A 2nd would have been nice but it’s done now imo. We’re not trading him and we’re staying in a 4-3.
Our LBs are suited to a 4-3. McCoy/McDonald fit the 4-3. We don’t have the personnel to make a 3-4 switch unless we made drastic changes and probably tried to trade Lavonte or something.
Also Chandler Jones is under contract.

You cant blame mike smith for lack of mental toughness. Thats on the player. Do you think phil jackson had something to do with jordan’s or kobe’s mental toughness? Thats either you have it or you dont. Unfortunately a lot of players on this team lack mental toughness. Thats why they were deflated after the first play of the first game of the season because a call did not go their way. Thats not coaching.

Question for Tmaxcon.
During GMC’s career here in Tampa he has never had a quality defensive end to take any pressure off of him. Michael Ghost Johnson, Sackless George Johnson, Daquan Bowers, etc.etc.
Do you think it is a fair assessment of GMC when the franchise has not given him any help? Love to see what GMC could do with a quality defensive end on this defense.

JOE has written about this, I have echoed it, it is common knowledge. The Bucs had the money to sign Calias Campbell but instead went the cheap route and signed Baker. It was then and always will be about MONEY.
Last year the Eagles spent the most, the Browns spent the least, time for the Bucs to spend the Glazer loot. At least as much if not more than they spend on Manchester United.

I said this last season and I will say it this season. The best option for the Bucs defense is Dontari Poe. They need that man beast in the middle to eat up blockers. And to push the pocket, free up the linebackers. Suh is a 3-Tech, the same position GMC plays. The Bucs need a bona fide NT next to GMC.

i was cautiously optimistic going into last season but I can no longer sit back and listen to the SOFT BS spewing from low standard buc fan trying to justify an organization that has not done anything right in 16 years.
you wither win or fail and all the bucs have done for 16 years is FAIL… I’d love to see a meaningful win before 2025…
some of the apologists act like this a class organization that is only down on it’s luck when in reality its an embarrassing organizations with very little hope for the future. reality sucks. In Schiano’s last year the Bucs averaged like 6-7 points in the 2nd half which is insanely bad for the modern era

I almost got excited, but then reality set in. I’m not buying the bullishly this year. I knew when Smith was hired his defense would be bad, but hope, optimismn, off-season hype took over and got the best of me. I believed Mike Smith would morph the defense and play much more aggressive in 2017. News flash, nothing about that defense was aggressive. Not once did I see one of our corners and stand close enough to a wide receiver to extend his arm and touch him, much less jam them at the line.
If they sign Grimes, Sigh Talib and put VH3 in the slot and let them play UP ON THE LINE there sacks will be there. The blitzes will make it home, the pocket will collapse more and the opposing team will much more often be on their toes.
Sorry but this guy just walked into a death trap. Unless he is retained after the house is cleared at the end of 2018 this entire coaching staff is toast unless Smith changes….but he won’t. No hope for the season unless Jamies and the offense are flawless which is exactly why I would take Barkley. Bad coaching will run every defensive draft pick they make and then Jason licht will be criticized for making a bad pick when really it was bad coaching on a good player…..just like VH3.

You never heard boo from Sapp d line coach that’s because they let the dogs hunt. You don’t need a guy on the sidelines telling them how and when to do things to get to the passer, they should know that at this stage. Let them play which is why I bet they were more successful the first year of the defense

I LOVE Buckner as our d line coach!! That is the attitude we want our whole team to have not just d line, hopefully brings a new attitude on that side of ball.

I like the idea of trading for Quinn. We need to give this D Line some talent. I love the idea of trading back with Buffalo (only if Chubb is gone). But if we trade back we should consider sending one of those 1st rounders to KC for Marcus Peters (he not going for less than a late 1st) and drafting Vea at the other 1st or a top Cb. Michael Bennett needs to be considered in FA as well as Sheldon Richardson. Look at the Jags, they LOADED up thier D Line and it was nasty.

Who is a positional coach that changed things in a meaningful way when they were just a positional coach? Legit question – not a rhetorical one. I don’t think they’re actually all that important as they’re just doing what they’re told to do, but I’m open to hearing why that opinion is wrong.

Mike Evans – Players praised Tomlin and obviously he turned out to be an excellent head coach but as the Bucs DB coach did he do anything that changed the tone of the defense? I’d say no, the defense was firmly Kiffin’s baby. That’s what I mean here, does a DL coach really change anything, even if he’s good at his job he’s still just taking his orders from Mike Smith.
