Jameis & The Cash Queue

February 9th, 2018

“Russell, man, I need a new calculator.”

It’s all smiles and dollar signs for America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, this morning.

And he’s not alone in the average-QB club.

The 49ers made it rain upon Jimmy Garoppolo and his seven career wins yesterday. Garoppolo nailed down a five-year, $137.5 million contract. Joe heard chatter this morning that it might be $90 million guaranteed over the first three seasons.

And there sits young Jameis, three years into his five-year rookie contract, which looks like minimum wage next to Garoppolo’s deal.

If Jameis can find a way to progress in his game, win games, and steer clear of controversy, then he’ll likely be looking at over $30 million per year in his next contract and near $100 million guaranteed.

Over at ProFootballTalk.com, NFL super guru Mike Florio noted that the next wave of QB paydays will go to the following:

Kirk Cousins
Matt Ryan
Case Keenum
Sam Bradford
A.J. McCarron
Teddy Bridgewater
Aaron Rodgers

Then comes Jameis, Russell Wilson, Marcus Mariota and Nick Foles in the 2019 queue, potentially.

Of course, the Bucs, if on the fence about Jameis, could just let him play out his ’19 option and franchise tag him for the 2020 season.

But this really will all come down to the following questions?

Is Jameis winning more games than he loses? Is Jameis improving? At least one of those answers has to be “yes” for Team Glazer to move all-in with their hearts and wallets for what it will take to re-sign Jameis.

Jameis looks small compared to Wilson….

  2. Jason Says:

To get the best of Jameis we need a better Head Coach who isn’t afraid and coaches to win a game instead of coaching not to lose a game like Koetter does.

  3. Guzzie Says:

Depends if the next coach and GM want Jameis and the ultimate big “if”, JW can stop embarrassing himself on and off the field, last year wasn’t very flattering, combining that with his college years, it’s time to grow up

  4. 813bucboi Says:

told yall Winston would be the first with a $200 million dollar contract with $100million guaranteed…..

Winston has the glazers by the short and curlys(if he can keep his nose clean)….

    #NOEXCUSESIN208!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!!

  5. Poor Glennon Says:

Winston……….30 Million. Bbbbbbbbbbbbbbooooooooohahahahahahahah. That is the Funniest thing I’ve heard in a while.

  6. El_Buc941 Says:

A.J. McCarron? seriously?I would rather build around Tyrod Taylor than him.lol

  7. Alanbucsfan Says:

You have to know the investment you are making when you make a qb the no 1 pick in the draft… if they don’t re-sign Jameis, they should sell the team

  8. Tom Edrington Says:

Then the Bucs will be salary cap hell……

  9. Getaclue Says:

He could take a Tom Brady type contract too instead

  10. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

loved what doug pedersen did when he was having to switch QBs with nick foles he totally switched his offense and went with one that foles had success in, a total opposite lovie move, and koetter needs to probably take some plays from the jimbo fischer playbook where jameis was at his best

  11. Kobe Faker's Girl Says:

    Supply and Demand

alot of checkdown charlies and College qbs throwing 5 yard patterns.

Most of these young QBs hit their ceiling

Only the true downfield arm talented QBs will rise above the crowd

Jamis winston has that golden arm

    30 mil per + 5 yr =150 mil

Bucs dont pay? 10 suitors will be knocking

    Kandy Faker

  12. AlteredEgo Says:

    Drew Lock 2019 draft….Bucs !

  13. StPeteBucsFan Says:

Koetter was 2-1 with an old backup QB. I love #3 like the rest but are we really sure this is all on Koetter. How did he win two with the backup if he’s such a horrid coach and unable to adjust to his talent?

  14. Waterboy Says:

If Garapolo got paid 28-30 mil a year after 7 games Winston will most certainly get that the question is whether it’s with the Bucs or elsewhere.

  15. Waterboy Says:

Jets and Miami is how StPeteBucsFan. What was their combined record last season?

  16. Patrick in VA Says:

Given the fact that so many teams are being crippled and handcuffed by the skyrocketing QB contracts, I’m baffled by the fact that more teams aren’t constantly drafting new ones every couple years in rounds 3 and 4 to develop. meanwhile, keeping an offensive system that is designed to be run by young QBs who are mobile and can make up for their lack of experience with their mobility. If you’re always getting those guys then you’re never in the situation that you find the Ravens, Seahawks, or Colts are in where their QB takes up such a huge part of their cap that they struggle to give them complimentary pieces around him. Embrace the rookie contract, guys!

  17. Waterboy Says:

Patrick in VA, good points that might be the direction that teams start to move in to avoid the big QB contracts.

  18. Pickgrin Says:

With news of the Garoppolo deal – (like P. Manning with Nationwide jingle in his head) Jameis walking around humming the McDonalds commercial –
“Buh da bump bomp bahhhh – I’m Lovin’ it!”

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

    ^^^ excellent…..

  20. SteveK Says:

    TBH,

Jameis needs to show more and not be suspended.

If the Buccaneers know that a suspension is coming, why note pay Kirin cousins the contract Jameis would’ve gotten, and trade #3?

I know for sure, no star players should be suspended to start your year. Not a good way to make a playoff run, and it sends the message that “it’s ok” to make selfish/stupid decisions.

I hope Winston has a great year and leads us to the playoffs. But, if he’s suspended the. We’ve got problems.

  21. AlteredEgo Says:

Bucs have Jameis for 2 more years…..if he does not show dramatic improvement next season, and I am not talking about stats,…..the Bucs will have NO choice but to draft a QB in the 1 st next year

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

The Bucs are sorta noted for being..CHEAP throughout their overall history. So nothing will surprise me here. N-O-T-H-I-N-G!!

  23. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

Jameis may be watching next year for 6 games if the Uber deal is real. What are the Bucs going to do then???? Maybe should look at a Back Up this year we can win with. Being in the hole 6 games and Mike Smith in charge of the Defense may get us a worse record than 2017!!!!! I may be wrong but I may not!!!!

  24. DB55 Says:

I doubt jameis will be back to Tampa on a second contract. 31 other teams that don’t hate him as much as he’s hated in Tampa. Plus Tampa are perennial losers so what’s the incentive?

Go pay McIceCream 30mil a year he’s definitely earned it.

  25. DBS Says:

He will be back. The Eagles already have their starter.

  26. Waterboy Says:

I’d be willing to bet there are at least 10 or more other teams would be more than willing to invest money in Winston if the Bucs won’t. With Drew Brees, Big Ben, Rivers and Brady all getting old they may also be potential landing spots for him if the Bucs decide not to sign him.

  27. Syl Says:

I look at the numbers and how he has progressed every year. I have to remind myself he is only 23 years old, and these people are thinking he won’t get a second contract. The Tampa Bay fans wouldn’t know a good QB if it came and bit them on their backside. You guys have a franchise QB on your hand. If the defense was not so clueless, and if they can etch out any kind of running game the red zone numbers and the interceptions would be a lot less.

  28. LakeLand Says:

One player will be getting 17% of the salary cap. Good luck finding the other 52 players.

  29. Poor Glennon Says:

8-8 or better will buy his option year. Probably around $20 million. I’m good with that, anything less. Cut him, i don’t give a rats ace. About his stats good (passing yardage) or the bad (fumbles, Int’s) JUST WINS

  30. webster Says:

    @ stevek

You mean how brady miss the first 4 games of the season because he was selfish when he was caught cheating? Only buc fans who hate winston would see this as a reason to cut him. This fan base is not very bright.

    @ DB55

I agree. I have a friend who is a big fsu fan and he was adamant that he did not want the bucs to draft winston. He said these fans are idiots and would not appreciate him. Sure enough i see idiotic post everyday. Recently that same friend said he hopes jameis can find his way out of Tampa and i am starting to agree. This fan base does not deserve winston. I would rather add his name to the long list of ex bucs the stupid organization/media/fans ran off that won a championship somewhere else.

  31. webster Says:

So everyone of my post have to be moderated? What did i do to you joe?

  32. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Waterboy

To which I reply…Bears and Giants..what was their combined record?

Our only meaningful win was the last one against New Orleans which many posters here derided because they somehow believe that a few moves up in the draft crap shoot would have been worth losing.

Not me…I’m thrilled that we won that game and I’m thrilled that #3 found his mojo and the win at the end seemed to lift the entire team. It left a far better taste in our mouth than had we lost. You could see the monkey jump of a lot of backs in that game…#3 and DK especially.

  33. Patrick in VA Says:

@webster – I’m not sure about what your posting history is, but just judging by the stunning bouquet of dumb that was your last post, chances are this isn’t an anomalous instance and you are likely a repeat troll who gets off on posting inflamatory things that lack any substance

  34. Patrick in VA Says:

@SPBF – We all felt that way with the winning that happened at the end of the 2016 season as well. The defense looked really good, Jameis was playing well despite not having targets. It wasn’t blind homerism that got us all in a frenzy this past offseason. I’m not sure what it is about this team, but they simply cannot seem to train effectively or whatever it is that they need to do to make the leap from one year to the next. It’s like we’re starting over every time

  35. Nick2 Says:

I like Jameis but if he misses significant time by getting suspended next year he better make up for it with a playoff run. Anything less and I am analyzing if he’s ever going to be what he wants to be. A true franchise QB.

  36. webster Says:

    @ patrick

Calling a post dumb without elaborating shows you are one of those not so bright tampa fans. Unlike you, instead of just giving insults, i back up my post. Until you can do the same, please refrain from responding if you cant elaborate. Your post was a waste of time.

  37. Kobe Faker Says:

20 mil for jameis?…2 more than what long neck got last year?

the 30 barrier will be most definitely broken with ryan and rogers…2 years from now wilson will go over 33

jameis at 30m will still be top 5. this is the nfl norm

i have no doubt that with the coming new regime next year, the possible trade of jameis winston will be 1 of the hottest topics in the NFL

especially if the big market QB is retiring and they dont want the 5yr growing pains of a iffy QB prospect

it will be interesting to see how the growth of the 1st and 2nd yr qbs around the league do next year. their production will weigh heavy to jameis future value in tampa and around the league

last 5 games, there was only a few QBs better than Jameis, even with a injured shoulder

  38. webster Says:

    And again moderation

  39. AlteredEgo Says:

    Bingo Kobe

“it will be interesting to see how the growth of the 1st and 2nd yr qbs around the league do next year. their production will weigh heavy to jameis future value in tampa and around the league”

of course I see all of Jameis’s positives and potential
    however
I will not overlooked his game day flaws…

  40. Kobe Faker Says:

    uber suspension?

its not even a lawsuit or an criminal investigation.

    NO COMPLAINT to arizona popo…NADA

    LOL. its a twitter text

  41. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Of course, the Bucs, if on the fence about Jameis, could just let him play out his ’19 option and franchise tag him for the 2020 season.”

I don’t see why they would do a contract until his first one ends. Franchise him IF the deal cannot get done in time.

    If he earns remaining.

Interesting tidbit…the Bucs have never given a second contract to a QB they drafted.

  42. WutdaBucisthis Says:

    Wait it out

  43. Waterboy Says:

I don’t see anything coming from a grouping incident other than bad PR for Winston that’s why I rarely waste time talking about it.

    @SPBF
Good point on Chicago and NY but considering game 2 was against the Vikings who went to the conference championship, game 4 against the super bowl runner ups, week 5 was the shoulder injury in the first 3 mins of the game and 21-0 in the first quarter. I seriously doubt the backup would’ve won any of those games. Also the week 6 he handed the defense the lead with under 3 mins in the game and they let Tyrod Taylor go 75 yds in 43 seconds to take the lead back. Not his fault.

  44. Waterboy Says:

7 of 13 games Winston played were against playoff teams this season.

  45. DB55 Says:

    Kobe

Don’t you get it? They want him suspended! The ONLY place I heard anything about Uber suspension is from Tampa media. They keep bringing it up so the league doesn’t forget or is forced to do something so they can say “you see …..”

Listen let me be the first, although I’m not speaking in an official capacity as a rep but I’m positive they feel the same – GFY Tampa. No one cares about your high moral ground. You whack coaches or your she-male hero DT.

Jameis got bigger fish to fry and he darn sure isn’t going to do it here. Let’s see where Mike Evans goes in FAs and then maybe hopefully jameis will be right behind him.

  46. DB55 Says:

I say take your lightning and shove it up your arse!

  47. Rod Munch Says:

Jameis is a franchise QB, period, and he’ll get his $30/m a year – but that’s 2 years from now, which is why the Bucs need to use that big advantage they have on cap space now.

Also for those who just pretend not to look at all the 4th quarter comebacks Jameis lead only to have the defense collapse, I’m guessing you’d rather have Mariota? LOL! Mariota can’t throw a football, his only skill is running, and the more he runs the more he gets injured, plus he’s aging which means his running skills decline naturally. If I’m Tennessee there is no way I’m handing Mariota a new deal, not unless he dramatically improves. But to the dopes that say YOU ARE WHAT YOUR RECORD SAYS YOU ARE, I guess they’re eager to dole out cash because the Titans obviously made the playoffs on the back of Mariota. Oh right, no they didn’t, they made in spite of him.

  48. Capt.Tim Says:

    137 million.
    To play A game.
    Compared to Soldiers, Teachers, Doctors.

As a a society, we’ve gone Barking Mad.

The salary from the NFLs top ten QB’s , would practically fund the “ Free breakfast program” , that provides breakfast to underpriveledged
    school children.

  49. passthebuc Says:

    @Captin Tim
We have not gone barking mad.
we have been barking mad for some time and people just do not get it.

Basketball was my sport and I have not followed a pro game for 20 years. It is boring. Football is becoming no different.
    30 million a year, Crazy.

  50. AlteredEgo Says:

I can not accept Jameis just yet. The hunt for a franchise QB is 42 year old. Until he shows accuracy , decision making and timing like the QB’s we watched in the playoffs and Super Bowl….he has show great promise but he still has to prove his can take the next step

  51. NFLNut Says:

    ******************

JOE … you’re WAY OFF on this one.

Jameis does NOT have to improve and doesn’t even have to win more games to get $30mil+ per year … come 2020, he will be 26 with his prime fully ahead of him and even if he goes 5-11 the next two years and doesn’t improve at all and puts up back to back 90+ passer rating seasons just as he did this past season, he will get $30+ mil per year … easily.

HOWEVER, it’s not the Bucs who should be cautious in regards to offering Jameis a contract, it’s Jameis who should be cautious in regards to accepting a Bucs contract offer!

If I’m Jameis I’m REFUSING to sign a long-term extension with the Bucs right now and I’m making the team franchise me for one year in 2020 so that I can hit FREE AGENCY in 2021 and sign with whatever team I feel most comfortable with. If I’m Jameis, I want to be in the situation Kirk Cousins finds himself in today … Kirk’s not locked-in to the garbage Redskins franchise, he has the option of signing with a quality organization like the Broncos, or breaking the bank with the Browns, or moving to the media mecca with the Jets.

If Jameis refuses to sign a long-term extension and makes the team franchise him in his 6th season (2020), he will hit free agency in 2021, at the age of 27, and with the new CBA in effect, ready to BREAK THE BANK! At that time, there is also a distinct possibility that Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Eli Manning, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers will all have just retired, and even that Derek Carr will have been cut and even that Dak Prescott will be a free agent after being franchised in his 5th season and the Cowboys will be ready to move on from a check-down “game manager” to a real gunslinger. Jameis could hit free agency in 2021 with the option of signing with his choice of the PATRIOTS, STEELERS, GIANTS, COWBOYS, SAINTS, RAIDERS and CHARGERS …. THAT should be Jameis’ plan, not signing some extension the Bucs offer him next year imho!

    ******************

  52. AlteredEgo Says:

Whoa….a bit a head of the game….stop right there with Kirk Cousin….when Jameis can make the throws Cousin does then your argument has substance ….there are HUGE areas of the football DC’s and DB’s are comfortable defending against Jameis arm
    accuracy…timing…decision making

  53. Waterboy Says:

    @Capt.Tim

Good points but also keep in mind it’s entertainment and only about 1,500 guys who are the best of the best in the world at what they do so people are willing to pay to see it. And at that level it’s more than a game it’s a business if anyone could do it and compete at that level I’m sure they would.

  54. NFLNut Says:

^ That’s laughable. The Redskins would have traded Cousins and their entire 2018 draft for Jameis … Cousins throws a prettier deep-ball than Jameis but there are throws and plays Jameis makes that Cousins can’t even dream of making. Cousins is nowhere near the talent that Jameis is … no where near!

  55. NFLNut Says:

Furthermore ALTEREDEGO … if Jameis was a free agent right now … he would make a lot more $$$$ than Cousins and would be the top free agent QB option … there isn’t a single team that would prefer to sign Cousins over Jameis … not one.

  56. James Walker Says:

I thank heavens none of you posters are scouts, GMs, or owners.

  57. NFLNut Says:

^ Various posters have completely opposite views, so you may want to explain what you mean as you must agree with some of the posters …
