Was Team Glazer Used?

January 7th, 2018

Victimized?

A respected national NFL writer believes Team Glazer got played.

Yeah, a little over a week ago, there was so much chatter that Chucky was coming back to coach the Bucs, Joe almost expected to see Chucky on the sidelines during the Saints game hollering and screaming.

Alas, that did not happen. A week ago Friday, it was learned Team Glazer (allegedly) folded its hand and decided to retain Dirk Koetter as Bucs coach.

Mike Tanier of Bleacher Report doesn’t believe it was as simple as that. He believes Chucky had no intentions of coaching the Bucs and used Team Glazer as nothing more than leverage to squeeze what he could out of panting Mark Davis.

Dirk Koetter [was] retained because Jon Gruden was just teasing them to make the Raiders jealous.

Joe will have more Monday on this but it appears Tanier isn’t exactly off the mark here.

It sure smells like it was Raiders-or-bust for Chucky and he just wanted to drive up the price on Davis until Davis played like the drunk college fraternity dude staggering to the Vegas craps table at 2 a.m., with his pockets loaded with $50 chips. And Chucky was the coy business woman hanging on Davis’ elbow, waiting patiently for the evening’s big heist.

This is almost as funny as McCoy asking for Bennett.

  2. P’cola Buc Says:

Sure feels like Gruden played the Bucs and finally received the revenge against the team that fired him. One good thing may come of this though, the Chucky Curse may finally be lifted.

WHO CARES … good for Chucky if he did … wise move!

Regardless, the Bucs are in a good place with plenty of cap space and the #7 pick BUT the more I think about … if Saquon goes #1 which I full expect him to, I don’t think Chubb is going to be around at #7 which means I would probably lean towards taking QUENTEN NELSON as I don’t trust ARDEN KEY or CLELLIN FERREL.

The good news is there are a lot of “need” free agents available:

DE: DeMarcus Lawrence, Ziggy Ansah, Kony Ealy, Junior Gallette, and others

DTs: Shedlon Richardson, Justin Ellis, Dontari Powe and others

CBs: Trumaine Johnson, Malcolm Butler, Prince Amukamara, Kyle Fuller, Ross Cockrell, T.J. Carrie, E.J. Gaines, Nickell Robey-Coleman and others

S: LaMarcus Joyner, Tre Boston, Eric Reid,

RBs: Lev Bell, Isaiah Crowell, Jeremy Hill, Dion Lewis, Jerrick McKinnon and others

    OGs: Andrew Norwell and others

    OTs: Cameron Fleming and others

We have a TON OF CAP SPACE and I think we need to go crazy in free agency!

  4. BoJim Says:

Naw. Chucky wouldn’t do that would he? Showed us right away that he just thinks of himself. Might be another Lovie. Doh!!

  5. Erc2706 Says:

Someone used the glazers again? Doesn’t shock me. Enough players do it (looking your way way baker) I’m not shocked that a coach did it. I’m starting to agree with a few people here. The blazers need a team president to be a go between. Someone to handle the day to day stuff. They are onvious great at making money. But they (The glazer sons) are horrible at running a team. This team was doomed the day daddy glazer couldn’t run it anymore. You never saw the bucs used like that while he was in charge.

  6. America's QB Says:

Bucs aren’t going to be big spenders imo. They need to save for Winston Kwon and Evans contracts all of which will likely be massive. Hopefully they will be smart and cut dead weight like baker, ayers, ghoulston and possibly even jackson if you can trade him. Godwin is a stud. Hope him and Evans are lifelong buccaneers!! By dumping that other trash then I can see the bucs being big players in free agency.

  7. Tackleblockwin Says:

I think it is probable Chucky was interested and the Glazers were interested. I don’t think it ever got too serious though. It makes perfect sense that the Raiders and Bucs would be on Gruden’s list as the top teams he would like to coach. Could you imagine if the Bucs would have fired Dirk, thinking Gruden was coming back and then he changes his mind and goes to the Raider! My guess is that they talked, but the Glazers were not interested in a 10 year deal and giving Gruden complete control.

  8. WyomingBucsFan Says:

I’m no longer a fan of this team. Glazers are stupid and can’t make good football desisons. I will still follow the NFL, possibly as a Raiders Fan. Good by Buccaneers.

  9. TampaBayRaidersFan Says:

Gruden made the correct choice here. He knows the bucs are doomed with the current ownership.

  10. DBS Says:

Bye . See you under another name.

  11. JonBuc Says:

Of course Gruden did…and it worked to perfection. Davis has always been a “fanboy” of Gruden…funny how his Father Al kept him out of the public eye until his dirt nap. Not even Al could approve of Mark’s haircut/style 🙂 Gruden will never truly forgive the Bros. Glazer. Chucky was the “son” Malcolm wishes he always had…a lot of love between the two. I’d say the karma “score” is probably even. Chucky got his name on the stadium and an 9 figure deal and the Bros. Glazer still haven’t found a coach to replace him.

  12. The Buc Realist Says:

Dang it!!!!! is the national media reading “The Buc Realist” again for the “TRUTH”?????????? OMG……its another “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!

    The Buc Realist Says:
    January 4th, 2018 at 1:57 pm
The sheep can’t tell when they were just used for leverage!!!!! when you are named as the team interested weeks and months before and they sign somewhere else, You were used for leverage!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!

But the Glazers weren’t victimized!!!!!!!! The Glazers do not care if someone else “overpays”!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. mark2001 Says:

Wyoming…there is the only team owned by the community….America’s team…with Aaron Rodgers…America’s QB…. …the Green Bay Packers. And they will be signing a new GM, OC and DC this year because average and just making the playoffs and going out in the first round, except when their real franchise QB is injured, just isn’t good enough. Refreshing.

  14. Bucs fan #7423 Says:

    Hahahha at DBS

nfl owners don’t get used, they are the users. Soon as someone is no longer serviceable, owners simply stop paying them. Never feel sorry for them

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

Yes the Glazers were used and are being used. More importantly, Buc fans are being used by a useless coaching staff. And definitely a wothless Defensive Coordinator. The Tampa Bay Liguor Association Loves the Bucs. They know every Weekend, residents/Buc fans must seek them out to..ease their pains while watching this team play.

  16. Hodad Says:

I’m a life long Buc fan, but I’ll always root for Gruden. The Vegas Raiders can be my second team. What the Glazers need to do if Koetter doesn’t pan out, the y need to find the next Gruden.

  17. TampaBayRaidersFan Says:

WyomingBucsFan is now TampaBayRaidersFan. I have had more then enough of the Glazers. Life is to short to waste it on the Glazer Buccaneers. Gruden was the only hope for this franchise and now thats gone. Why would i continue to support a football team that has no real interest in being a champion.

  18. SOEbuc Says:

At least Chucky didn’t play them out of a $100 million dollar/10 year contract. The Glazer kids have always sucked at running this team but at least they knew they don’t know how to hire the right coach and keep him for more than two years. That is, until they brought back the great Dirk Koetter and Mike Smith for a third.

  19. WillieG Says:

The Bucs have a secret plan: Give Koetter one more year. If he succeeds, great. If not, they will fire him and his entire staff, along with Jason Licht and his entire staff.

They will then bring in Bill Belicheat and give him total control of all football operations. Bill might retire after the end of this season because of the rift brewing in NE. He wanted to ditch Brady and show he can win with Garapolo, but Kraft nixed that idea.

Or the Bucs might trade for him. Either way, Bilicheat gets to cement his legacy as GOAT with a QB other than Brady. And another team too.

  20. Eric Says:

Cry me a river Glazer boys, you put yourselves in this position.

I go to Vegas quite a bit. Looking forward to catching a Chucky game when they move there.

Probably will be a lot more fun than whatever will be happening here.

  21. BucFamous Says:

If they tried to hire a guy they previously fired–then that’s on them.

  22. Herb Says:

I don’t know which is more depressing. The fact that the Glazer’s are mediocre owners or that Gruden is an average coach who is a genius at making money.

  23. JMarkBuc Says:

    Willie G, guess it’s 420 somewhere…

Belichick, would bench a turnover prone, wacky in the head QB in a minute, or trade him away.

Hmmmm…. I think I like your idea, now puff, puff, pass….

  24. Destinjohnny Says:

The glazer boys don’t have what their dad had.
Malcolm was sharp the kids…..not so much

  25. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    @Destinjohnny

That’s a common misconception. Malcom was never in charge of day to day operations. It was always the sons. It was their Idea to buy the franchise in the first place.

  26. LifeOfABucFan Says:

Chucky wasn’t going to join the Bucs after the latest Jameis’ stunt..He would have to worry every off-season while the groper is out among society..we just can’t predict if this was his last stunt or not..I just don’t trust Jameis to behave…even on the field, the helmet-flicker has issues..

Chucky has Carr and what better role model can you get?? I don’t see Carr making headlines on his behavior anywhere, do any of you seen anything I might have missed?

  27. greg Says:

I have no problem with the Glazers not bringing in the under .500 since the Super Bowl Gruden in here for 10 years/$100 million. Oakland has Vegas on the horizon and it makes a bit more sense for them to have more flash than substance.

Some people say “Who cares…it is not my money” Well if you are naïve to think that our season tickets and concessions would go up even more to pay all that money to Gruden….so be it.

  28. greg Says:

“would NOT go up” excuse me

  29. Bucnjim Says:

There was no way the Bucs could have competed with the Raiders as far as compensation for Gruden! The Vegas Raiders will have unlimited fan base not to mention the millions of dollars a GAME the will make from gambling inside the stadium complex. This team will be a gold mine even more than the Cowboys!

  30. loggedontosay Says:

You would have to stupid to write such an extrapolation and even more so to believe it. Belichick does not have a deal as good as Gruden’s. The Raiders’ organization thought we better give Gruden ten million for ten years or he might go to the Buccaneers? Ludicrous!

  31. SOEbuc Says:

Isn’t it Gruden that makes the worst personnel moves also? I for sure wouldn’t of minded him over Koetter, but when he Gruden came to us and won the SB there was already one of the best defenses of all time here with possibly one of the greatest DCs of all time. And defenses win championships (Unless you’re Tom Brady and the Patriots). Glad we didn’t pay him $100 million.

  32. SOEbuc Says:

^^Espicially back then when defenses were actually allowed to tackle the offensive players without a 15-yard penalty^^

  33. StPeteBucsFan Says:

ALL NFL teams have the money to pay what they want not just a few franchises.
There is a salary cap for the players and the coaches and a few million extra do not break the back.

BTW Technically I heard this morning that Belicheat is still the highest paid coach…at least cash…don’t know the value of ownership.

I find it hard to believe a man with Gruden’s credentials and respect around the league is worried about only getting two years to be HC no matter where he goes.

And so given that he has at least 3 and probably more years…I cannot believe that a man would make a career decision based on ONE player even if he was the QB. Yeah #3 and Derek Carr give the Bucs and Raiders some immediate appeal…but which person would put a 100 million dollar decision on the ACL or rotator cuff of ONE player. This was never about Jameis or Carr!!!

It would have been awkward for Gruden to coach in Tampa. I don’t think a player or coach on stadium memorials are good for active participants. What if Gruden went 10-22 his first two years? Would we have taken him down from the ring? 🙂

It would have been an interesting power struggle between Gruden and #3. Who would have had the juice? The franchise QB or the coach? #3 has far far more power over Koetter than he would have enjoyed with Chucky.

  34. not there yet Says:

What you think happened is not a story that anyone can say is true it’s just TMZ reporting. Players use other teams as leverage all the time and who wouldn’t go for the max contact. What happened to the idea the glazers wouldn’t give gruden full control? This is a garbage story. Aaah oh well I forget it’s off-season for the bucs as usual so the garbage reporting starts early for us. 3-4 months of agony

  35. Bobby M. Says:

Like it or not, Gruden has now set the bar extremely high for landing proven coaches….like a Harbaugh or Arians. Which likely means the Bucs will continue down the path of trying to find coaches through rising coordinators. The Glazier boys prefer value over winning and as long as they can continue to sell hope through a few free agent splashes and draft hype, there’s no reason to change a proven profit model.

IMO….the issue we face as Buc fans is
    1) relatively small market team with little to no history of a winning culture. I think i read in the history of the Bucs….we’ve produced 15 winning seasons in 40+ yrs. Basically our expectations have been and remain low

    2) There’s too many hands in the cookie jar…which means the team is trying to maximize the take for 3 owners vs just 1….like Mark Davis with Oakland. They’ll never hire a team president because that’s just less money for themselves and you’ve got 3 people providing input making every decision a balance of trying to appease the group vs producing the best product.

    3) Their bread and butter is Manchester United….the Bucs are the red headed step child. That will never change.

I dont think the Glaziers got “played”…I think Gruden gave them a fair shot but that particular compensation package doesn’t fit into their business model. Oakland set the bar high and has just a good of QB in a weaker divsion. The Bucs just couldn’t match on any level without paying more.

  36. Broy34 Says:

Here’s the thing. You cannot go crazy free agent wise when you’re a bad team. Malcolm Butler for example do you think he’s gonna give his best every day for us? No that’s why u get Grimes and Ayers. Didn’t have private jet treatment and Ayers regressed bad but gave his all. That’s what wins football. This team has to build through the draft. Maybe one o lineman and one day lineman. Then draft two of each. Maybe three defensive

  37. mark2001 Says:

This “used” thing is rather ridiculous. Everyone gets paid but the fans….seems to me the great folks that drop a few grand a year to see this team win are the ones being “used”….by ownership.

  38. LakeLand Says:

    A 10 year playoff drought
The worst defense in the NFL
5 Head coaches in the last 10 years
The worst fanbase in the NFL

Why would a “qualified” candidate come to this?
Especially when better jobs are available

  39. Ronteco Says:

OF course they got played. The Glazers boys are the nerds of the owners. They have no clue how to run a football franchise and Tampa will continue to be abused until they are gone.

  40. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

    MAN JOES – I love your site…
But you guys are skewing more and more into TMZ level territory lately.
Don’t placate to the negative commenters just because they comment the most.

There’s no question the Raiders gave Gruden the better deal. That, factored with the realization that his legacy was already cemented here in Tampa (Ring of Honor, Super Bowl win) made the choice easier.

Gruden did not know the Raiders were going to fall apart like they did. No one thought Del Rio would be in trouble at the start of the year. No one.

This situation came in out of the blue over the final weeks of the season once the Raiders imploded. The Buc interest was real much earlier.

Last piece of advice: don’t use “Bleacher Report” as a source. Come on, you’re better than that. Just don’t.

Fix the trenches, fix the Bucs!

  41. StAugBuc Says:

Wow. Loved when Bucs got Chucky. Thanks for SuperBowl. But after that, he was 45-51. In addition, he hasn’t coached for 9 years. You paying $100 million for that?

  42. Mike Johnson Says:

If our Bucs truly concentrated on Defense for 2 yrs we could get there. But its a..BUC LIFE and..we won’t. its gonna take another year for the Bucs to see Koeter and Smitty need to be sent packing. Our Division is not getting any worse. Its only getting better..harder to Win. I just have no faith in our organization right now. But I’ll still support them….on TV!! I’ll not spend another dime buying Buc products for now. We are about 3..maybe 4 yrs away. And by the way, Did you guys see them JAG-WARS play Defense today? Held the opposition to 3 points and then to add insult to injury, took out the opposing QB. Thats MEAN man..MEAN!! We had that..once upon a time. Congrats to J-VILLE!!!!

  43. Rod Munch Says:

Good for Gruden – he was able to take not winning a playoff game in 15 years and spin it into $100-million. Whatever he did to get that done – amazing. However like with everything that comes from Gruden’s camp I wouldn’t believe any of it, now that he’s back with the Raiders you’ve already heard all the nonsense about he never wanted to leave, it wasn’t his decision, etc etc etc, which based on everything he said before shows that’s a lie. Everything he says will be about how he just so badly wanted back with the Raiders and he didn’t have eyes on anything else, he had been scouting the team for years, he’s never took his eyes off them, the Raiders are his first love and his only real love, etc etc etc. Again good for Gruden for getting that deal done – you get $100-million AND you don’t have to live in the land of hippies as the team moves to Vegas. SOLD!

  44. MikeGlennonFan Says:

Does anybody else recall Bucs fans salivating over the signing of Lovie Smith only to chase him out of town with torches and pitchforks two seasons later? A Gruden signing would have been a disaster for this franchise and for Chucky. Dirk will win 10 games next season and we will draft a statue of him on dale mabrey.

  45. Bucsace Says:

I think Mark Davis wants to prove he’s a gambler like his father…..Remember Al Davis’s final masterstroke?……Jamarcus Russell- $68 million with $39 million guaranteed contract…..Russell was out of the NFL in 3 years…….not that I believe this move will be that kind of disaster, but still???!!!

  46. cover deuce Says:

“It sure smells like it was Raiders-or-bust for Chucky and he just wanted to drive up the price on Davis until Davis played like the drunk college fraternity dude staggering to the Vegas craps table at 2 a.m., with his pockets loaded with $50 chips. And Chucky was the coy business woman hanging on Davis’ elbow, waiting patiently for the evening’s big heist.”

I’ve seen you labor through these similes before, but holy cow that’s got to be the roughest one I’ve seen yet!

  47. lambchop Says:

There’s no point trying to dissect this. Only Jon knows the truth. There’s always a 3rd wheel in a threesome. Whether it was intentional or not, it’s a business and I don’t fault Gruden for maximizing his return. He kept out of the league enough while still hovering around it to tease just about any team that sucked. And he eventually found a willing partner to pay a king’s ransom while inheriting a playoff team. Touche Gruden, touche.

  48. Vico Says:

I’m glad it was never real. I’m concerned the Glazers didn’t think of a plan b and smitty is coming back as dc because of prospective negligence.
