Putrid Pressure

January 6th, 2018

Half-sack.

You think your hangover is bad now?

This will either make you hurl up the scotch you drank last night or make you want to chug a Bloody Mary — or start doing shots again.

No one has to remind fans the Bucs had the worst number of sacks in 2017. It’s like the wart on your arse you have to deal with daily. Well, it gets worse, if you can imagine.

The good folks of NFL Films, which is behind BSPN NFL Matchup, has looked over all the tape, and not only have they confirmed the Bucs were beyond putrid at sacking the passer, they puked on the field when it came time to even pressure quarterbacks.

And it isn’t even remotely close.

This reminds Joe of what he heard from Bill Polian. The Hall of Fame general manager noted recently on SiriusXM NFL Radio that if you cannot get to the quarterback, you have “no shot” with your defense closing out games.

How many games did the Bucs defense vomit away in the fourth quarter this season?

This organizational stain of not being able to develop a pass rusher is past the point of jokes and finger-pointing. It’s going to get folks canned.

If Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has to go hire scouts who have a demonstrated knack for finding defensive ends who happen to work for other teams, then it’s high time to start throwing some Team Glazer loot around and snatch these guys away.

Last Joe checked, scouts don’t get paid anywhere near the same type of cash as failed NFL defensive ends.

Let’s bring the heat next year! My way to early mock draft:

Round 1 Pick 7: Bradley Chubb, DE, North Carolina State (A+)
Round 2 Pick 7: Sam Hubbard, DE, Ohio State (B+)
Round 3 Pick 7: Lorenzo Carter, OLB, Georgia (A-)
Round 4 Pick 7: Tyquan Lewis, DE, Ohio State (B+)
Round 5 Pick 7: Tony Brown, CB, Alabama (A+)
Round 6 Pick 7: Mike Weber, RB, Ohio State (A+)
Round 6 Pick 29: D.J. Reed, CB, Kansas State

  2. Bculaw Says:

That’s not poor play – that’s utter incompetence in both coaching and execution. I heard great things about Jay Hayes when he was brought in, but this is inexcusable. Gholston should “Luck” into 3 sacks a year. Heck, any d-lineman should! It’s as if these guys are being schemed/coaches to fail!!!

  3. The Buc Realist Says:

This sounds exactly like last year about the WR and Receiving options for the offense!!!!! The whole weapons for winston campaign, that ended up poeple questioning if too many weapons were brought in!!!!!!!!!!

The campaign to add talent to the defense will happen just as it happened to the offense last year!!!!!! at this point we just need the hast tag!!!!!!!

    Surge for Coach Smitty!!!!!!!

Joe, with all these stories, sure sounds like you know think its a “talent” problem!!!! What you need to “realize” was that dominik left nothing on this roster!!!!!! 3 players from those 5 horrible years!!!!!!! And it would have only been 2 if Butch Davis was not punching the table in the war room for LVD54 on draft day!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fix the trenches then the sheep will think that the “play-calling” will be magically fixed!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Joe

Stop wasting time and just change “offense to defense” and “JW3 to Coach Smitty” from this article a year ago!!!!!!!!!!!

    Fix the Talent!!!!!!!!!!

    GO Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. Ndog Says:

I’ll just remind everyone that the same people that signed Ayers, Baker, Gholston, George Johnson, and relied on Jack Smith are the ones that will picking the new guys so please temper your expectations.

  6. Clw JB Says:

Need 2 FA DE and 2 drafted in top 4 rounds – if we can match the athleticism of our LB core with a fast attacking DLine we can turn it around very quick

The secondary will instantly be better -but need the same amount of new DB bodies also

Talib and Bennet would be a fine start, thrown in Ziggy for
    Good measure, resign Grimes

Allows you take BPA with every draft pick

Pay up or sell the darn team owners

  7. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Ndog

and they said the same thing last year “that the same people that signed and relied on VJ83, Louis Murphy, Josh Huff, and Freddie Martino, will be picking hte new guys!!!!!!

    LOL!!!!!!!! the sheep never learn!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. TDTB Says:

Move Kwon to the outside and Beckwith to the middle, trade DJax to the Giants for a veteran DE, draft Chubb and any competent CB and this is a whole new defense.

  9. James Walker Says:

Djax isn’t worth a decent pass rusher. No team would give up an effective DE for an over the hill unproductive WR.

  10. gilhealy Says:

Hey Realist, I like Martino. That guy is money.

You dont have to always be right. Learn to learn. Dirk koetter has said numerous times the bucs have alot of talent. It was the worst coached team ive ever seen in tampa. The problem I have is Im not sure if coaching can be “fixed”. I surely dont think so, but have no option but to believe it can be. Of course more “talent” will help, as it does to all teams. The playoff teams every year will be the ones whos coaches game plan and adjust the best. I firmly believe if this team had slant passes, draws and more screens in its arsenal it would have won at least 3 more games, with the same “talent”. More blitzing lbs, safeties and another 2. Gota get the qb off his spot somehow in this league. No idea why smith all the sudden forgot that after all these years. Every qb in this league will pick apart zone coverage with time and comfortability. You can deny it all you want but the only way this team makes the playoffs with the same staff is IF the staff somehow changes their philoshopy by the next patty cake training camp.

  12. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Ndog, right on… jason licht has no clue, the bucs have needed DL/OL since he walked in and has passed, i cant believe that smitty who knows his defense couldnt ever use any exotic 3-4 blitz schemes unless he has ZERO faith in what the bucs roll out on the back end to cover

  13. 2Anglican1609 Says:

Can we also get a stat on how many times any RB blew through the A-gap while McFraud was getting was being 10-teamed by the opposition?

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What happened to all of those brilliant Mark Dominick draft picks?

Looks like we’ll end up with GMC, LVD & Gholston

As Bugs Bunny says…..”Th…Th….That’s all folks”…….

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

I tried to tell the sheep long ago!!!!!!! This team had to rebuild from so far!!!!!!!!! OMG……………..Its the “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe now that the Rockstar is gone, we can name more than 2 drafted players in 5 years as a “foundation”.

  16. Bobby M. Says:

Solid defensive linemen dont walk into free agency for $6 million per year…..Baker was let go for a reason….We ignored all those reasons and then act shocked it didn’t work out.

We also went into the season relying on not ONE….but TWO DEs coming off surgeries….Neither of which had produced a season remotely worthy of having that type of confidence in.

Lastly, if we all agree the entire defensive scheme is built around McCoy….why in 4 yrs of drafts did we only spend ONE pick on a defensive end? As Polian says, you must have a pass rush…or more importantly win the trenches…..That’s basic football 101….Yet Licht drafted a drunk TE, a 3rd down specialists at RB, a pathetic CB, a kicker……The dude doesn’t have a vision for building the team. Licht has a semi-successful system for finding talent but he’s shown ZERO ability in building a team. Remember, the Titans picked Mariota right after us….Both teams were rebuilding. The Titans made the playoffs, the Bucs got a top 10 draft pick. After 4 yrs of Licht drafts, that terrible.

  17. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

The. Bucs have proven they are incapable of hitting on single picks/signings when they try to address the d-line. Thus…

The Bucs need to pick/sign 8 new faces on both lines to battle and beat out the incumbents to have any chance. That’s a minimum of 4 new d lineman – guys with starter potential and beyond – to have any chance at getting an improved pass rush.

If they fix the trenches, they’ll fix the Bucs.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Realist

You should recognize that I have been with you on Dominick for quite some time now……What really puzzles me is how Joe has always avoided trashing him….even the other day Joe suggested that the Glazers forced him to get rid of Bennett…..go figure>..

  19. Roadwarrior Says:

Just keep beating that dead horse.

    Don’t forgot TBBF and TBR,

Dominik publicly prided himself on not drafting offensive linemen.

  22. Pierce Says:

And yet the Chiefs have the lowest but they made it to the playoffs. I’m not saying he’s wrong, but it is possible to win without pressure. It’s also possible to lose with a lot of pressure.
Pressure is important and we need to address it, but games can be won/loss either way.

  23. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    @SteveK

I haven’t really looked enough to comment on individual players. Obviously everybody loves Chubb and Barkley is perhaps a generational talent worth selecting first but normally I’d rather address RB like you have.

So don’t know about the individual players but in terms of the positions addressed I would LOVE this draft.

As the piece points out it’s LONG past time to address this problem and it dwarfs any other problem we currently face and in fact contributes to some of them.
If we built the best pass rush in the NFC all of the sudden our defensive backfield starts looking better. If we sign Talib AND Grimes…back them up with McClain…VHG and the other two youngsters…all of the sudden we have a top ten defensive backfield and ESPECIALLY if we had the best pass rush in the league.

Our LB’s are already excellent…..This is why I like all those picks at DE SteveK.

At this point there is NOTHING we can do that is too dramatic to fix this problem. Hell sign 3-4 FA’s to go along with the draft.

MISSION #1 THIS OFF SEASON…..BUILD A GREAT PASS RUSH!!!!

  24. Mike Johnson Says:

Congratulations Tampa Bay. Come on, lets yer it We were the..Worst DEFENSE in the NFl this past year. Led by..the worst Defensive Coordinator, Yours truly, Mr Smith.Quite an accomplishment. And still there are some here who say, go after a RB with the 1st pick. And to add insult to our situation, That QB everybody said was not that good, is going to the playoffs before Sir jameis. And he plays for the Tenn Titans. Keep building your ohhs and ahhss offense. And keep losing by one or more points!

  25. Brion Says:

I think as a community service Joe should forward the contact information from people who submit a 7 (seven!) round draft opinion on a message board in January to the FBI. These persons are obviously deficient in either accomplishment or self awareness as befits their age and they belong on some sort of law enforcement watch list.

  26. Lakeland Says:

Mark Dominik has 16 draftees in the NFL. Most of them are playing on other teams. Just watch the playoffs you will see them.

  27. sj_bucsfan Says:

Saggy Swaggy should be the 1st to go! It concerns me he has yet to be cut! He should’ve been set free to shag trees after the Carolina game! The guy is a cancer in the locker room and on the field. One man with a bad attitude can ruin 50 others that had good attitudes…

  28. unbelievable Says:

    Putrid… Disgusting… Embarrassing… Pathetic…

    Take your pick!

  29. mark2001 Says:

Fangio is the rumor in Green Bay. I’d imagine they would be dying for Smith, but they heard he is already taken.

  30. ATrain Says:

The Bucs have to change the LOCKROOM LOSING mentality

TOO many Oh WEll we lost players
