Season Over For Vernon Hargreaves

December 20th, 2017

Mike Smith weighs in

Vernon Hargreaves’ hamstring injury is too serious to let him return to the field this season.

Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Bucs will place the second-year cornerback on injured reserve.

The stat line on Hargreaves reads nine games, seven starts, no interceptions and no forced fumbles. (In parentheses, it says “bust.)

Sorry, but when you’re the No. 11 overall pick and play poorly, then lose a starting job and then have a serious injury, you get the bust label until you start playing better.

Hargreaves will get the chance next season. Whoever is coaching the defense, Joe is confident they will want to keep working with Hargreaves’ talent. He turn just 23 in June.

This afternoon, defensive coordinator Mike Smith said he believes Hargreaves definitely has the ability to play outside cornerback again. Smith moved him to nickel at midseason after Hargreaves had a rough start and didn’t show improvement.

Good luck, Vernon.

He looks like sonic the brass knuckles

  2. Easy Says:

    Bust

  3. Bradentonbuc Says:

I liked what I saw of VH3 in the slot, they had him pressing and bumping more at the LoS. Hopefully he can bounce back

  4. Lord Cornelius Says:

At worst I’d think he could be a very solid nickle CB. That’s a valuable position and there have been 1st round CBs who end up in that role – even if it’s not a good use of a draft pick.

It’s not like this guy is worthless. He looked decent in training camp and preseason and seemed to play fine when most the starting D-line was healthy in the rare games that was the case.

It probably hasn’t helped his development to come start right away on a team that has the worst pass rush in the league. That is a bad recipe for developing any CB.

  5. Bucsfanman Says:

Only problem LC, is that we desperately needed a legit starter, and one for the long haul.
With the holes in the roster, we’ll have to add another. One that we should not have had to.
Improving the d-line will go a long way towards making this defense better.

  6. 813bucboi Says:

get healthy VHG…..don’t worry about a thing….smitty had a man press cb playing off/soft coverage….aka coach my scheme….smitty never played to your strengths….

good news is the next HC and DC will know exactly what to do with your talents and play to your strengths…..brighter days are ahead….send dirk packing and watch us get better!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!

  7. pelbuc Says:

Ah yes, GM Licht picks another Superbust and the Glazers give him an extension! It’s not hard to figure out why this franchise sucks! The blind leading the blind. I hope the next coach hired demands a new GM. This one doesn’t know how to grocery shop.

  8. I'm tired and 87 is right Says:

Off with their heads!!!! Arghhh! Go Bucs!

  9. JonBuc Says:

This was predictable…more of a mercy rule. He was getting beat like a drum at full speed/strength…bad hammy or not it was time to hit the proverbial reset button for next season.

  10. Pierce Says:

2016 was a bad draft year. I think Licht should stay, and I think VH is young enough to bounce back, but that was a truly horrible draft.

  11. Lord Cornelius Says:

I duno if VHIII is a man type corner. He’s still undersized. He’ll still have trouble getting physical at the line in that regard; but he’s an athlete with instincts at least; and that can be very useful in the secondary if he can play consistently and with confidence.

He has the body type and play style to be a solid nickle CB. Ryan Smith looks like a better potential man cover CB to me; but in the end no CB will have a chance to do that well without a pass rush.

Even Grimes is getting roasted weekly if the QB gets enough time.

  12. TheBucsAnthem Says:

I absolutely agree Vernon “Marshmellow” Graves is now considered a “BUST”

Next year is “prove it or lose it” deal for him or else he’ll be released or let go after the 2018 season.

Such a high draft pick just to come out not a contributor’s effort for the bucs…………terrible

  13. tmaxcon Says:

Vh3 is a bust you can not coach short and slow… just another wasted 1st rounder by bucs from a piss poor college program with huge character issues… pop warner coach and car wash attendant in his future

  14. doctor_berto Says:

Majority of Bucs fans knew Hargreaves would be a bust from the start. Small, slow corners don’t make it in the league. What a bust of a draft year.

  15. Destinjohnny Says:

Should have been a third round pick.
In the deepest defensive line draft ever…….

  16. mark2001 Says:

tmax…don’t always agree with you, but you have a great point about his measurable’s. The measurable s just weren’t there. And Corner seems to be a very difficult position to “coach up” when you don’t have them and be successful. And he sure as heck is no Ronde Barber, whose measurable’s dropped him to the third round, though I think Ronde was really faster though Hargraves had a better combine time.

Regarding the rest of what you said? Same old same old…..

  17. Destinjohnny Says:

Ps hey jason start coming to my house to watch sec football.
You won’t make these pics if u do
It was sooooo clear on vh3

he didn’t go to fsu…lol….GO BUCS!!!!

UF has far more felons than FSU sir…. hell one was serving life recently… did you send your condolences to his prison boyfriend by any chance

  20. Lord Cornelius Says:

I never never had a problem with VHII’s size. I don’t buy that argument. There are plenty of corners with his size that can play at elite levels on the outside:

    Janoris Jenkins (5’10) – 4.46 40; 33.5″ vertical jump
    Chris Harris Jr (5’10) – 4.48 40; 34″ vertical jump
    Brent Grimes (5’9) – 4.57 40; 33.5″ vertical jump

    VHIII – 5’10 – 4.5 40; 39″ vertical

That’s not the reason he hasn’t been great at all. Or at least shouldn’t be any excuse imo.

  21. Lord Cornelius Says:

    have never* vs *never never

  22. 813bucboi Says:

its obvious coaching is the issue with VHG and a few other players that haven’t developed properly…..during the draft he was consider one of it not the best man press cb….he had the best technique of all the cb prospects….

if we would’ve been able to draft j.ramsey, smitty would’ve had him playing off/soft coverage and he would be looking just as bad as VHG…..

cant wait til this team gets some competent coaching in the building….GO BUCS!!!

  23. John5 Says:

He is a complete UF bust. He spends so much time trying to look GQ and posting all these photos of himself on social media. Get over yourself dude. You need to be aggressive and play some actual football. Until he cares more about being a professional athlete than his ego, he’s not going anywhere. Softgraves has been a lack of effort. Period.

  24. chickster Says:

hardgraves is scared and he playes like it

  25. NFLNut Says:

Hargreaves was decent in as a 3rd corner but was obviously expected to be a #1 corner … he is a prime example why winning meaningless games can be detrimental to a team that needs the best draft pick it can get … we could have had Jalen Ramsay instead of Hargreaves that year had we just lost a few more games … as-is, I wanted the Bucs to draft Laremy Tunsil over Hargreaves but I do still believe Vernon can turn into a decent starting corner in the league …

Regardless, if we lose the last two games we should end up with the 5th pick and be able to select Bradley Chubb, Saquon Barkley or Minkah Fitzpatrick … if we win one of these last two MEANINGLESS games, we could drop all the way to the 11th pick and have to pick between someone like Ken Webster and Clellin Ferrel …

For the love of Bucs fans everywhere TANK THE LAST TWO GAMES and get a top 5 pick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    tmax

fsu would have more if players were actually arrested…..

you cant talk about bad character…..I love the guy but Winston has been the poster kid for bad character…..

tell your girlfriend to stop the BS, find another part time job and keep her legs closed….she’s ruining peoples life’s….obviously you cant satisfy her financially or in the bed…..lol…GO BUCS!!!!

I always though he looked more like a pissed off ninja turtle.

  28. DB55 Says:

Grimes, Elliot, vh3 nickel, Tandy and Evans

That’s the secondary I’d send out there but wtfdik.

I’d also have vh3 returning every kick cuz if hump can get 10 I’m positive vh3 could get 20.

  29. tmaxcon Says:

Winston does not have bad character just a little immature like we all were at his age. He has put himself in bad positions but those gold digging cleat chasing SKANKS making false alagations should be held accountable for thier lies. Especially thar Mickey mouse sttorney driving the BS

  30. Skipper Says:

VH3 struggled early but played much better his last three games. Started for Grimes who was out injured and played well just before his hammy gave out. Not even close to giving up on VH3, think he will rebound and be a good corner or nickel.

  31. tmaxcon Says:

Innoncent until proven guilty useed to matter until the pathetic pc police took over this once great..

  32. holymoly13 Says:

Get some major D-line talent and the secondary will be better all around. Bucs have to draft a DE or two, and get some help through free agency.

  33. Since76 Says:

Bum, weak, soft, small and a wuss….hurt my arse. Worried they will catch on to him if he plays. Like many other Bucs now. I’m hurt to hide my inadequacies.
    Horrible for the fans

  34. James Walker Says:

He has the talent and the brain. He needs coaching and conditioning.

  35. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

No reason to risk further injury. Let him get fully healthy for next season and hopefully our new DC will line him up in the proper positioning and not 12 yards off of the line. This kid will be just fine once he gets him mojo back and that is something I have 0 doubt will happen. He had a terrible sophomore season which happens often in this league.

With so little pressure on opposing teams QBs its no wonder why our secondary has been a joke.

  36. What in the buc Says:

If we had a defensive line most of our backers would look good.

  37. What in the buc Says:

    Key word MOST

  38. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

This draft has multiple OT and DE we could select with our hopefully top 5 pick. Our 1st 4 rounds,in no particular order, need to be OT, DE, RB, and CB. And we need to add a few free agents and we could be setup lovely for the 2018 season

  39. Pickgrin Says:

There’s still plenty of time and opportunity for Vernon to develop and improve.

That said – it definitely looks like either Tunsil or Rankins should have been the pick. Either that or just have stayed at #9 and picked Floyd which we traded to the Bears for a 4th that was wasted on Aguayo.

  40. Lamarcus Says:

Vh3 is man press corner. Oh yeah likely a top 15 in the right system. And if anyone here don’t know that watch tape. Otherwise being short slow ain’t got nothing to do

  41. Lamarcus Says:

And vh3 show boating with finger wagging Motumbo style on every play brings some kind of life to this piss poor defense Sometimes you guys talent evaluation is questionable at best.

U can’t tell me any other defensive “right” mind can’t tell he is man corner should not be in the league. Vh3 is a better man up corner than Grimes. Grimes makes a nice play and surely gets burnt the next. But he should be in the pro bowl? No he works good Mike smith Cover 0 …4 safety scheme. That’s all I see.
