“Our Lines Suck”

December 16th, 2017

Major bombs fired at Gerald McCoy, Chris Baker and Bucs leadership

Fasten your seat belts, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers guard Ian Beckles (1990-1996) is holding back zero punches on his beloved Bucs.

Several things stuck in Beckles’ craw about the struggling franchise, so he explained on his In The Trenches podcast this week.

Where should Joe start?

First, Beckles can’t believe how the Bucs haven’t gotten value out of DeSean Jackson. He blames the playcaller and the quarterback, not Jackson.

“It’s hard to evaluate how DeSean Jackson has played this year when Jameis can’t get him the damn ball,” said Beckles, who says Jameis isn’t adjusting because he appears to be consistently off target in his throws to Jackson.

On Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter, one of them has to go, Beckles said.

“Our lines suck,” Beckles bellowed, and he called “poppycock” on anyone who thinks the Bucs are talented enough to have a winning record.

And that brought Beckles to the defensive line. Beckles said Chris Baker is “stealing” from Team Glazer and he accused Baker of giving 25 percent effort on multiple plays against the Lions on Sunday.

Regarding five-time Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy, Beckles was outraged that McCoy was seen on the sidelines crying several minutes after leaving the Lions game with a biceps injury and teammates were consoling him. Beckles says McCoy belonged in the locker to stop making the game about himself.

The Bucs likely would be better off without McCoy, his bloated salary, poor leadership and a 30-year-old body.

“With him, they’re ranked 31st in defense. Let me continue. With him, they’re last in the league in sacks. With him, they’re last in the league in pressures. Where is there to go? How is he worth it?” Beckles said of McCoy.

“The five sacks are not worth the rest of the times in the game where he’s pushed around and he’s out of place. You have no idea how many times the ball goes right where he’s supposed to be. I just think he’s a selfish football player.

“And to cry on the field during the game is a selfish move. I don’t give a crap what anybody says. That’s selfish. It ain’t about you.”

These are dark times for the Bucs, Beckles believes, and he wonders if the team has reached NFL laughingstock status again.

DJax is clean and shinny this year…zero wear and tear…huge direct deposits every week…life is good….DJax is still waiting for a properly delivered ball so he can YAC it up !

    Tmax got to Beckles….

I do agree that Jameis is terribly inaccurate especially when throwing to Jackson.
Now as far as GMC sacks…..the team has 17 sacks…..GMC has 5….that’s about 30%…..now with all the other players including LBs, CBs, Safetys…..I can’t go where Beckles went on GMC Sacks……we have an extremely poor TEAM sack total…..and it’s not like we never blitz.

When you lose as much as our Bucs, Its like a Xmas ensemble..Everybody chimes in. I remember Beckles when he played for us. And he often stood out…and not in a good way. He got beat like..the last of the Mohicans drums..and often! Ok..So Beckles wants to sing 1st tenor now. Thats fine. But nothing sloves problems like Winning.
Out with the old..In with the new..I hope!

I like the Ian Beckles podcast and agree with everything that he said. Although it looked to me like DJax could have made a play on that long pass this past weekend. It didn’t look like he gave any extra effort to get to the ball.

You know why he’s trying so hard to play this week? Fans who are saying the same things know that if he’s not in the field out defensive line will look the exact same as it does when GMC is on the field. Tired if hearing about this guys superior quickness and talent at age 30 yes he is quick and gets to the quarterback but why is that enough. Sapp always knew you had to play the run first, the one thing GMC can’t do. Honestly 50-60 defensive snaps a game for 16 games and even if he got double digits sacks that’s 10 plays out of hundreds of snaps. A complete game has to include stopping the run but he’s trying to go out there with one arm and they’ll let him because of the one dementional thinking of this franchise. If you can’t stop the run you won’t get a chance to rush the pass, he can’t handle a double team at full strength, if he plays this game they’ll be no need to double team and it’ll be a slaughter but hey GMC will have played and have the excuse of being injured again

No matter what you think when the leader of the defense got injured but is not on a stretcher but on the sideline walking around crying while the game is going on having to be hugged and consoled by younger players it’s a pathetic look

Altered check the routes. Koetter got primary receiver running into safety help. Where do you want him to put the ball with no separation and 2sec to throw?

Simmer down son it ain’t all on jw. And maybe just maybe if Djax tries to make a play on the ball he might just catch it rather than just watching it drop 2 inches in front on his feet. Ijs

  19. gambelero Says:

I agree that both lines are poor. We drafted skill players and ignored the lines. Carr, Mariota and Prescott have better olines than Winston, but not as good they’ve had in previous year(s). Every qb struggles when their line can’t protect them.

Build from the ground up, edge rushers, oline. If a Pro Bowl caliber left tackle is available, get him. Otherwise get a right tackle in round two, edge rusher round 1. New, younger coordinators (fire both coordinators, but keep Koetter as head coach is my preference) capable of learning and adjusting to the modern game, the new practice restrictions, the pass and tempo happy, offensive coordinator headed teams, and the press and gamble on third down (look at how the Dolphins played Brady as opposed to our lay off 12 yards and concede) defensive philosophy.

In free agency, stop trying to play it safe with the Cherilus’s, Sweezy’s, Baker’s, Dotson’s and Martin’s. Get some real studs. My econometrics professor, Barry Hirsch, was a labor economists who did some studies and found that the really good players are massively underpaid. It’s the utility infielder making 3 million that plays 15 games a year that’s way overpaid.

Finally! Someone laid it out straight. Beckles is 100 percent right. 100 percent!!
The #1 problem and priority of the Bucs are their two lines. Period. Period. Period.

I’ve said this many times… This offseason, the Bucs need to devote all their draft resources and free agent money to adding a minimum of 8 new players to both lines. That’s right – eight lineman of both sides of the ball. Add that depth and completion to the incumbents and I guarantee some new stars will rise from the pack and both sides of the ball will be better exponentially.

Other than Marpet, all of the other offensive lineman should have to fight for their job lives and hopefully be replaced. There are zero defensive lineman who shouldn’t have to fight.

Fix the lines, then you fix the Bucs. The rest will fall into place.

It is not just sacks, tackles, TFL’s and pressures on non-trap / screen plays that Softy is not producing.

Last year Softy had 28 total tackles (including assists) to Suh’s 66.

The fatal flaw in this new “disruption” stat is that it is purely subjective. Those with an agenda will disagree with the objective about what constitutes disruption. That is why we grade performance on objective criteria. Before Softy was drafted, the measuring stick was always the same. Now you have player who stinks by objective criteria so the sheep must change the criteria to have any argument at all.
Most of you sheep have no clue what a trap, screen draw or play designed to allow the tackle an outside release to “pop” the tight end or slot “z” receiver through the D tackles vacated gap. That is what the Pats were doing with Welker and I was hearing idiots bragging about Softy’s penetration on those plays – foolish.

Get this through your heads: Mccoy is a gap jumper, offensive coordinators design plays, both pass and runs, to take advantage of this – you allow penetration by pushing him the direction he wants to go and hit the play, trap screen, draw or pop pass, right through the vacated area. It is basic playcalling that you will see today.

  28. Buc believer Says:

I’m really SHOCKED arhat Joe put this on JBF!!! I truly am and not saying this for affect or to get a rise out of Joe. For an actual football guy to finally expose Mr. Softie for what he is is SO stinking refreshing! Thanks a million fold Ian!!

Perhaps Joe has a far different standard for offensive line than readers. It seems readers want five pancake blocks each and every play, four-yard wide holes on each and every play for a running back to run through and Jameis to have enough time to run to the locker room, take a sh!t, wipe his arse and get back on the field without being touched.

Joe lives in the NFL world of 2017 where an average line in 1982 would be a Hall of Fame line today. There is an offensive line crisis in the NFL, in case you haven’t noticed (and anyone saying the Bucs offensive line “sucks” very likely hasn’t noticed). Every one of the starters on the Bucs offensive line would be starting for another team if cut. Fact.

Bucs are No. 18 in sacks allowed, that’s middle of the pack. Yeah, truly disgusting, right?

Sure, Doug Martin can’t get the job done — because he is finished! Kaput. The Bucs bring a guy off the bench who right away shames Martin in running, but no, that’s not the coach’s fault, that’s the offensive line’s fault, right? Doug Martin is so despised by the offensive lineman they lay down so Martin can get drilled time and again with the goal of Martin getting blown up so badly he can’t walk for a month.

Is the Bucs offensive line superior? No, Joe never ever wrote that. Is it horrible? Hell no (unless you and Joe have different standards for “horrible.”). Is the Bucs offensive line serviceable? Hell yes.

  37. Joe Says:

Tmax is really Ian Beckles commenting on this site

    Never thought of that. 🙂

  38. RickinFtMyers Says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. It’s time to let Gerald McCoy go and see what happens. Since the Bucs spent a first round draft pick on McCoy in 2010, they’ve won 45 games and lost 79 games. In that same eight-year time span, four head coaches have come and gone along with five or six defensive coordinators. Similarly, defensive backs, linebackers, and other defensive linemen have come and gone and yet the defense doesn’t seem to improve. Although he’s a perennial Pro Bowler and a player opposing offensive coordinators must plan to stop, the fact remains McCoy is the one constant through eight years of futility. It’s time for Tampa Bay to make the one change they’ve failed to make in eight years of futility and cut McCoy loose, if for no other reason than to see what happens.

  39. Bradentonbuc Says:

It’s a shame because so many Bucs fans are grass is always greener people. People, NAME ONE DEFENSIVE LINEMEN IN THE PAST TWENTY YEARS WHO WRECKS A LINE BY HIMSELF. Can’t name a single one without naming other on the defensive line that helped them out

  40. AlteredEgo Says:

Absolutely don’t let McCoy go, unless kings ransom in draft picks and that ain’t ever going to happen,….make Gerald play out his career here …he is more than soild…he is what he is…and that is a brick to build upon and around…we have tried and died…gotta keep the best functioning pieces on this broken down old ford

Sir with all due respect is it possible that they’re rank 18 bc Jameis throws the ball up for grabs every time he’s about to be sacked?

IMHO if you have a decent oline 2 out of 3 of your qbs would not have shoulder injuries. Idk

Caleb, pamphile and Evans would start on any team? Hmmm okay!

Honestly I’m not sure any of our (actual) starting 5 would start on any team much less any playoff team.

  42. DB55 Says:

The joke is that gmc will be at elder ford today from 2p til ???

  43. Jimmy T Says:

Hey Altered Ego, if u haven’t seen accurately thrown balls then u must be eating BBQ or something during the game. 1st 4 games before injury jameis had a 68% completion % w 7 TD’s, 3 picks and no fumbles and the Bucs were 2-2. 68% is mighty accurate. Since COMING BACK FRON INJURY HE IS JUST AS ACCURATE. Against the Pack he was close to 70%. In both games back he gave his team the lead or tied for the lead. This team has no D and no running game all year. Brady and Rothlesberger would NOT win here! It is a TEAM game so get your facts right. Improvement is needed at all positions including qb but make no mistake Jameis will be here next year, the Bucs WILL pick up his 5th year option and 12 years from now Jameis will have a couple of Suoer Bowls, hopefully in Tampa

  44. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Ian is 100% correct!!!

Our OL cannot run block!!! Our DL cannot rush the passer!!!

What kind of NFL team do you have if you can’t run block or rush the passer.

#Itstartsupfront Build the trenches the other positions can take care of themselves…aside of course from QB. Hopefully Jameis clears up the questions with some answers.

Still if we had a great OL…#3..the running and passing game would all be fine.

If we had a great DL that could rush the passer our DB’s all play a lot better.

  45. Zwak Says:

    Well said Ian!

  46. Broy34WantsGruden Says:

Alteredego and the combined age of the two QBs in that game is 80 YEARS OLD. how are you gonna compare not panicking when talking about two hall of fame Superbowl winning QBs who are 36 and 42 years old. Gimme a break. Jameis is 23. U act like Ben and Brady were lights out at 23

  47. Greg Says:

I have to agree with Joe, the only changes on this line from last year’s are Sweezy and moving Marpet to center. Sweet gotta go, either draft a center or go with Hawley and move Marpet back to guard. Draft a stud LT if one is available. Fact of the matter is that in today’s NFL, teams can’t be great on both sides of the ball because they run out of cap room to pay all these guys. What NFL needs is some sort of farm system or expanded practice squad to develop players, especially o linemen since every crappy college is running spread offenses now and ruining o linemen.

  48. Greg Says:

    Sweezy not sweet

  49. Season Is Over Says:

This website insulted fans that were saying this exact thing about McCoy’s value. Funny how that works out. Ahead of the curve once again.

  50. Bradentonbuc Says:

The most insulting aspect of the McCoy hate is the complete disregard of the opinion of the vast majority of “experts” in the field that are not just made up of college communication graduates but are former players themselves. It’s honestly disrespectful to McCoy, who has outproduced every defensive linemen the Bucs have had since Michael Bennett. Name one better!?

Not sure why no one isn’t calling you out on this bs. You are actually stating that the OL is causing the team to lose because they want Martin to get seriously injured? This is absolute biased nonsense. If it was true your defense of the horrible OL would be made even worse as no successful team has a mentality like that. You have painted yourself into a corner.

GMC would have ate Ian Beckles for lunch. Ian Beckles sucked! GMC probably shouldn’t have cried like a girl on the sidelines. But, he’s passionate and knows his tenure with the Bucs is coming closer to the end. But, to say that he’s not generating sacks? That’s laughable cuz there’s nobody else helping him at all. He’s not going to shed double teams, get sacks, stuff the run, hurry the passer all by his lonesome. Is he expendable now because of his age? Probably. But, this would be the worst time to get rid of him only because everyone else is unproductive. I do remember a few of the guys who come in on rotation who have made plays, but why aren’t they given bigger roles? If we can bench Jameis, why not bench Swaggy?

  56. Oxycondoms Says:

Hargreaves , aguyao, Howard, Chris Baker , djax – some lineman would’ve been nice. Now the team is in a deep hole

  57. Oxycondoms Says:

One thing about djax great talent but jameis didn’t need him he would been better off with a mid tier wr addition where there is no stress or pressure to get him the damn ball because I got that sense that djax and the media was pressuring jameis too much to force him into the offense

  58. lambchop Says:

DJax would have opened up the offense big time if we didn’t have an inaccurate QB. Even Fitz can’t hit a deep ball. Did you see the Chiefs game last night? If the Chiefs are ready to move onto Mahomes next season, we need a guy like Alex Smith who can actually hit the deep ball. The guy can get out of the pocket and throw. Huge upgrade at the QB position. Our growing pains at QB have stunted the growth of this offense. If we wanted to win now, we should have gone for a FA QB instead of drafting one. Let Jameis develop some more. It’s not every season an Alex Smith might be available.
