“Even With An Injury, He’s Playing 100 Miles An Hour”

December 30th, 2017

Year 8 of the Gerald McCoy era concludes tomorrow at the Den of Depression.

Three things have been consistent during McCoy’s career.

No. 1 one would be losing. Man, McCoy has eaten so many Ls — 81 freakin’ losses in eight seasons with one game to play.

No. 2 is consistency as a pass rusher. You see the stats all the time, McCoy leads the NFL in sacks among defensive tackles over X amount of years. He was drafted the same year (2010) as stud DTs Ndamukong Suh and Geno Atkins. Suh has three more sacks than McCoy, Atkins has 12 1/2 more.

No. 3 is respect of opposing coaches and players. McCoy doesn’t make the Pro Bowl every year because he wins the fan vote. In fact, he doesn’t get many fan votes. It’s the coach and player votes that get him the honor.

And that brings Joe to Wednesday, when Joe was sitting in on conference calls with Drew Brees and Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Fresh off watching, Bucs-Panthers film, Joe asked Payton if he sees anything different this season on film from McCoy.

Payton pretty much said same old McCoy, making life miserable for offenses. “Even with an injury, he’s playing 100 miles an hour,” Payton said.

“Yeah, he’s a stud. Gerald’s a stud,” Brees said. “We train a lot together. I got a ton of respect for him. Obviously, he’s a game-changer.”

Joe thinks McCoy really benefited from missing the Monday Night Football game against Atlanta, two games ago with a biceps injury. What a great time to freshen up your legs.

Joe expects McCoy to go out with a strong game tomorrow. And then he can sit back and wait while the Bucs again try to surround him with at least average defensive line talent.

Don’t worry McCoy haters…he won’t be around forever. Blink your eyes Buc fan…the good ones come and go…and rarely sniff a playoff.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

An article with well-deserved praise for GMC……but like tossing out red meat to a pack of ravenous wild wolves……or ignorant hating fools.

  3. chocolatecvb Says:

For Gerald’s sake I hope the Bucs can find a defensive coordinator who can surround him with enough DL talent that he can be lethal every down.

  4. Ed Says:

Hang in McCoy, year nine, any other player would have been asking for a trade. Nothing will change next year, other then more excuses for this staff and G.M.
I guess every team in the NFC South is counting wins against the bucs in 2018,what a joke.

  5. Ndog Says:

Blah blah blah the only play he made in the Panthers game was a sack where Cam held the ball forever. Plus on that last drive where was he? MIA like always in crunch time. People rip Jameis but praise this guy, give me a break. Titles like Jameis’s offense can’t score. Where is the article title that says McCoy’s defense can’t stop anybody?

  6. Sunny Says:

Once we get Chubb, Ferrell or keys , you will see he can be dominant

Not his fault he a lot losers for DE,

  7. Samsung Says:

One of his 2 winning seasons he was hurt and didn’t finish the season. I am at the games, he doesn’t get double teamed as much as he claims. I can think of 10 defensive tackles I would start over him including Clinton McDonald. I’m with Tmax, we need to rid ourselves of this cancer.

  8. mark2001 Says:

Sunny…with the ninth pick in the draft?

  9. Jim Says:

How do you replace Ayers, Baker, Noah Spence, Golston, and McDonald with 1 draft pick? You can’t. This is a glaring whole that will haunt us for so long Winston’s and Evan’s windows would have closed.

  10. JonBuc Says:

GMC is obviously talented…likable to many ( but not all…looking at you TMax 🙂 and appears to be playing through some pain. Fair or not he’s associated with nearly a decade of debauchery. And along with that…he’s made more than $100 mil in the process. That doesn’t sit well with many…and let’s not forget he’s compared to 99 whether that’s fair or not ( probably not ). His draft day comparator Suh is on his 2nd team and his cap charge is enormous. Lots of angles with the GMC “debate”.

  11. ManzielMadness Says:

    Trade McCoy, rebuild the line

  12. Mike Johnson Says:

One things for sure…GMC will never see a superbowl. maybe not even playoffs under Koetter and Smitty. Well, he can..by viewing one on TV!

  13. JonBuc Says:

Having more or less waved the white flag for 2018, prior to the draft in 2018 would be the best time to trade GMC. I just don’t think he would reap much.

  14. mark2001 Says:

You know Jon… you might have a good point. The Bucs are going nowhere the next couple years…so maybe we should trade McCoy for more picks. And give the guy a chance to actually win a ring. He deserves better.

  15. Lamarcus Says:

Gmc is garbage. Joe u summed it all up. GMC has eaten too many Ls. Every wonder if he ever gets that will to win.

Yes I rather would have Gmc 16 mil a year spread to 4 to 5 solid players. Another area we need is depth. Every player on the team been hurt and missed games but Dsmith. And he went out a game.

  16. BFFL Says:

Yet payton will call run plays right at gmc all game long while he laughs at bucs brass for falling for it again.

  17. Buc believer Says:

Yeah 100 MPH in reverse!!!! Dude is such a scam artist!!! I would think that the Joes would be smart enough to not be scammed by Batman Mcselfish but I’m wrong.

  18. Mike10 Says:

I see him flash 1 to 2 times a game, and the game he sat out, the defense looked no different. If this defensive line is as inept as they are with him, trade him, gain some picks/players.. we literally can’t get worse than, is it 19 sacks? Lol

  19. Lurch Says:

What do you expect Brees and Payton to say? But honestly, great players like Sapp made those around him better. GMC has never been that. “Game changer.” Only on Madden. Over the year I can only remember one time where he came through with a big play when the game was on the line. He’s not a bad player, but has never lived up to his draft status. On top of that, he is constantly hurt. That’s his excuse every frigen year. Trade him for a a couple picks and let’s start the actual rebuilding process.

  20. Bucnjim Says:

Fans are Frustrated with EVERY aspect of the team especially when a player is getting paid over $100 Million and we are stuck watching crap week in and week out for the better part of a decade. In my eyes NO ONE on this team has achieved super star status over this time frame. Evans could eventually along with Winston and Howard but not yet. McCoy has been associated with ONLY two average defenses. Three were basically last in rushing defense two were last in passing defense two were last OVERALL. Eight years ZERO good defenses! Plenty of last place finishes in one category or all. The only player who we can compare him to has 20 more games started, 150 more tackles and 5 more sacks. Nothing against him just not a $100 Million Dollar player in my opinion.

  21. mark2001 Says:

Joe…you know the unfortunate part…the Stank of this organization is falling on the heads and shoulders of some players that really don’t deserve all the hate. And you do know how much worse it will be next year, if Carolina, ATL, and NO don’t implode next year, don’t you? McCoy plays like a first round player. He just isn’t playing like a HOF player.

  22. not there yet Says:

3 sacks less than Suh who sucks also hahaha here we go again using sacks to show how dominant McCoy. Dude is average and there’s a reason you didn’t mention the guys better than him that also got drafted after him. Damn you guys are pathetic not to mention Aaron Donald it anyone else just the first ahead of him in his draft class huh. Sacks aren’t the only reason those guys are dominant and you think that’s all a defensive table has to do.

Dude is another year older and we’re acting like he’ll be just as good next year too. He’ll get worse because he’s older and the league is getting younger. He’s average but you refuse to admit it. He’s good not great period

  23. Bucsfanman Says:

Lamarcus- we spent darn near 16$$ for the 2.5 sacks from the rest of the dline! He single handedly doubled their numbers. From 3 other guys no less. By crunching the numbers, he’s a bargain, comparatively speaking!

  24. DB55 Says:

Three things have been consistent during McCoy’s career.

No. 1 one would be losing.
    No. 2 losing
    No. 3 loving to lose

But to give credit where credit is due he will make the hof for best smile by a DT.

  25. BucEmUp Says:

They better surround him with some top talent before he is wasted. One man can’t do it being doubled and tripled all the time.

  26. bojim Says:

Glad we have him. Get him to the playoffs Bucs. He deserves it.

  27. DB55 Says:

One man can’t do it being doubled and tripled all the time.
    ————
Every single dt in the league is doubled and “triple” team yet they still get the job done including McDonald. I think you guys give too much credence to the idiots on the radio and obviously drink too much during games. Can’t watch the plays when your head is pointing up at the ceiling.

This pos gives up on every single play but you don’t notice that do you. And I garuntee you think Baker is a lazy bum but the TRUTH is he and McDonald are the strength of this dline and when they’re on the field the def plays better period the end.
