Just Good Enough To…

November 20th, 2017

Quoting the master.

Joe’s favorite Florida sports columnist, the same guy Joe cuts checks to, eye-RAH! Kaufman, loves to regale Joe with his favorite Bill Walsh tale.

Per eye-RAH!, Walsh once told him that quarterback Steve DeBerg was “just good enough to get you fired.” It’s one of eye-RAH! favorite quotes.

Joe is reminded of this while reading the typings of good guy Mike Tanier of Bleacher Report and his digest of Sunday’s games. In summing up the Bucs, Tanier wrote the following:

What we learned about the Buccaneers: They are just good enough to narrowly defeat bad teams. This game had “Conference USA Showdown” written all over it.

Just good enough to beat bad teams. Yikes.

Joe wonders if Walsh’s quote applies here somehow?

Sunday will be a real test on whether the team is actually turning some sort of corner or just falling into some close victories over sh1t rosters.

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

Just a couple of season ago with lovie, they “just were good enough to” get the first overall pick in the draft!!!!!!! improvement indeed!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. mike n Says:

catching another team on a short week… we got a chance vs. atl but need to put up 30 plus

  4. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Been Jameis’ biggest supporter… But if there is a chance we need a new QB for 2018, winning games is gonna cost us heavily. We’ll either miss out on a top prospect, or have to pay up a fortune to move up.

Winning feels so good and you never want to say tank.. but theres just so much unknown right now..

we may end up with a top 5 pick this year…..double digit loses after winning 9 games last year?….regression indeed!!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  6. Lamarcus Says:

Yes we are just good enough to sneak past jets, dolphins, bears, gaints. And we point the finger at Jw??? Dumb buc fans

  7. ben Says:

has Jamis qb rating this year been as high as Fritz rating in the last game ? I think NOT.

  8. Defense Rules Says:

@Lamarcus … “And we point the finger at Jw??? ” I don’t think there have been too many folks pointing the finger at Jameis to date. His play have taken a step back IMO however. Part of that is on Jameis, part on the OLine, part on play-calling. I’m surely no expert, but Jameis looks ‘different’ this year, and I’ve thought for quite awhile that our OC & QB coach are trying to turn him into something that he’s not. I’m not seeing him as a good ‘game manager’ not is he particularly good at the long game (because of accuracy problems). The ‘real Jameis’ in terms of his on-field play lies someplace between 2015 & 2016 IMO. In terms of his off-field ‘hiccups’ I have no idea who the ‘real Jameis’ is at this point. Neither apparently do the Bucs.

  9. BUC MAN Says:

WHO CARES ABOUT RATINGS , WINSTON IS ONE BIG JURK AND KID THAT CAN’T HANDLE HIS SELF WORTH A CRAP AND KIND OF PLAYER THAT WILL NOT CHANGE , BECAUSE HE HASN’T CHANGED IN MANY GIVEN CHANCES HE’S GOT.HE’S THE KIND OF PERSON THAT SAID ,OH I WON’T DO THAT AGAIN THEN TURNS AROUND AND DOES THE SOME THING OVER . HE MUST NOT CARE ABOUT THE TEAM OR HE WOULD HAVE STOP HIS CHILDISH WAYS … GET RID OF HIM BEFORE IT’S TO LATE AND YOU CAN’T GET NOTHING FOR HIM .!!!

  10. BucDan Says:

“This game had “Conference USA Showdown” written all over it.”

Hey now! I take offence to this as a UCF alumnus. And we were Conference USA Champs during those glorious years!

What’s that you say? I am further validating your point??

BLASPHEMOUS!! The Knights are 10-0 and rocking the AAC!

As for the Bucs, I don’t care how it’s done as long as we win. Cue Raheem…

  11. SOEbuc Says:

    @Defense Rules

All I know is I’m going to be extremely pissed if he gets let go after playing for Lovie and Koetter his very short career or for being accused that he touched that Uber driver. But I don’t think he’ll be going anywhere until he at least has the chance to prove himself on and off the field. But it’s a Buc’s life so you never know. Anyone happen to see Adrian Clayborn woop dat ass last week?

  12. Lamarcus Says:

Yea fans blame team offense struggles on Jw like clowns. Inaccurate. Can’t win deep balls, etc. But Fitz doing the same. The real “jamies” might not ever show up in Koetter watch for sure. Jw will be better off with better ppl, fans, and better team around him. Tampa is too cut throat. Damn if u do damn if u don’t. And it didn’t matter the groping we was running out of Tampa anyway.

41 years no franchise qb to speak of :(:(:

Then it seems we are better off losing every game cuz that makes the fans happy it seems. In a perfect world we should be backing any Buc player but we are parading jw downfall. Sad makes me wonder why am I fan of fans and this team.

Jw should get another year to prove his worth although he shouldn’t have to prove anything. But this is The Buccaneers. We go thru players and coaches like underwear and every dramatized offseason and it’s overwhelming.

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Agree 100% Lord Cornelius..Sunday will be the showdown..the test. if the Bucs win Sunday? They have turned a corner. if they lose? They are still not ready for prime. Its just that simple.

  14. Lamarcus Says:

    Soebucs

Me too I’ll be pissed and unforgiving letting jw go. I’m a buc fan first but that will be the day…..

  15. doolnutts Says:

These Falcons aren’t all that. They are nowhere near last years team.. that being said I think we have a good shot for the W. A W here and a W the following week against Green Bay gets us to 6-6 and boy that would look something like a miracle lolol

  16. Lamarcus Says:

Yes I am defending jw on 1 account

I ask my wife if I can demonstrate groping to her 3-5 secs and when I did damn it was a long time. No way it was an accident

  17. unbelievable Says:

Ouch. As a UCF alum, that conf USA dig hurts.

Even if we’re now in the AAC…

10-0 baby! South Florida you’re next!

  18. Architek Says:

I don’t understand why you guys attack people for differing opinions. The facts and the record speaks for itself.

IMO, the quote from the story is spot on because the teams they have beaten are bad teams and in the context of many people sediments – this is not the “Bad A$&@” team that Koetter said it was.

Also, the eye test doesn’t add up either because we see a soft inconsistent defense that has no identity that’s supposedly got talent and playmakers. So I am questioning the scheme and execution of the scheme.

It’s one thing to look the part and lose a good game but it’s another thing to win the game and just look bad in many phases. All three phases!

Stop knocking people for not drinking the Kool Aid. The best learning comes from failure, therefore, the faster we acknowledge these failures the faster we can accept this team and avoid getting caught up in the hype.

  19. Architek Says:

    See the Eagles film!!!!

  20. Defense Rules Says:

@Lamarcus … “I ask my wife if I can demonstrate groping to her 3-5 secs and when I did damn it was a long time.” LOL … ya, 3-5 secs can turn into 3-5 hours when you count REAL SLOW huh. I’d try that with my wife but she sees right through me.

    —————
    Vs giants 113 qb rating
    Vs Buffalo 112.3 qb rating

Fitz is yet to complete 60% of his passes. The fact that you people think Jameis is the problem is hysterical. Another point for the fl public education system.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

@Architek … “The best learning comes from failure.” CS Lewis said something very similar Architek: “Experience is a brutal teacher, but you learn. My God, do you learn.” Of course, if that were true in the Bucs’ case, we should’ve won the last 10 Super Bowls. Some folks just keep finding new mistakes to make, while others seem to keep making the same ones, over & over & over again. Not that I was talking about the Bucs’ coaching carousel for these last few years mind you.

  23. Architek Says:

    Defense Rules –
You nailed it by golly you nailed it! You’re a sharp lad.

That’s where I was trying to go, stop criticizing people for their disappointment and start looking at the repeated failures and the root cause of the failures and let’s see where we really stand as a orginzation and fan base.

I think if we all can honestly evaluate where we all went wrong with these expectations and recent exposure we can find out where we went wrong.

I’m not a fan of the off season additions and I think there are chemistry issues and players playing isolated football rather than executing the system.

    ————————————————————————————–

A loss would beg the question “Does the NFL flex the 12-18-17 Monday night rematch?” A few quality match ups that weekend. @JOE, can the NFL do that? Anyone know?

  25. GhostofSchiano Says:

I would like to know why the last two seasons the defense plays like the 76 Bucs and then by mid-season they are playing like the 85 Bears????

Why does it take half a season to fix things? As professionals you would think it would take 1-2 games, not 8. SMH

  26. Big Stinky Says:

Did this TEAM give up on Jameis this year or Dirk? They are playing better with Fitz and I had a feeling they would, I said it before the Jets game. These guys give up too easily and I STILL blame Licht drafting losers. Someone should lose their job this year and I don’t really believe it should be Koetter. Guess we will see.

  27. BigMacAttack Says:

Ward needs to go. I’ve always liked GMC but after watching him get blown repeatedly this season, the team won’t miss him. GMC and Suh have both been underachievers. I would trade HMC after the season and he as much as you can, but he’s too nice and won’t make this team great. I look at the Bucs’ d-line and so many are just fat. Do these guys even runbor workout at all? No wonder they suck. Dirk was calling plays too not lose. He needs to give Monken a chance to call plays. He makes 3-4 bad calls for every good one. They are so predictable. Dotson is not good and the Bucs love him. Are we watching different games than the team? WTF?

  28. Jimmy T Says:

People like Bu Man have no clue. I bet NO ONE IM TENNESSEE is turning on Marriota after throwing 4 picks thevother night. But in this town? Yesterday Koetter called TE screens, when did he EVER make those play calls with Jameis. Like I said the person that will gain the most from Jameis absence is DIRK. He play calling has been horrible this year. Remember the Pats game? Everyone blames Jameis whenever this team loses regardless. Jameis never had a chance in this town. One thing for sure he WILL WIN a super bowl elsewhere.

  29. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

It’s simple… if the Bucs rise up and beat the Falcons (coming off a big Monday night game) then the Bucs play a winnable game against the Hundley led Packers. It’s right there for them to climb back to .500. Will they take it?

  30. LakeLand Says:

I live in Atlanta, and I have watch every Falcons game this season. They are NOT a good football team. The Bucs should beat them with ease, if the Bucs bring their A game.

    Falcons at Bears Win 23-17
Mike Glennon and the Bears had 1st and goal
on the Falcons 5 yard line with 21 seconds left

    Falcons vs Packers Win 34-23
    Good win by the Falcons

    Falcons at Lions Win 30-26
Detroit had 1st and goal at the Falcons 1
    Detroit scored-TD called back

Falcons lose 3 straight to AFC East Teams
    Buffalo 23-17, Miami 20-17, NE 23-7

    Falcons at Jets W 25-20
    Josh McCown 26-33 257 YD 2 TD 119.3 Rating

    Falcons at Carolina L 20-17

    Falcons vs Cowboys 27-7

This is not a very good Falcon team

  31. Defense Rules Says:

Lakeland, I agree with you … IF Bucs bring their A-game, they can beat the Falcons. Especially since the Falcons have to play tonight out on the West Coast against a 6-3 team (Seahawks should beat them … Freeman is out … but you never know). IF they lose tonight, they’ll be 5-5 with a very tough schedule remaining.

Still though, I wouldn’t say they’re ‘not very good’. Their defense has been quite good & very consistent (averaging giving up 20 pts/game). They’ve lost several close games, and they are playing at home Sunday. I’d expect a close game IF the Bucs show up. IF not, they’ll pile up a bunch of points like they did in 2nd game last year.

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    Lakeland

looks like a decent team to me….1 blow out and the rest of their loses are by 1 score…..plus you have to factor in they have a new OC and a new DC….they have a legit excuse to start a little slow during the first half of the season…..

    what our excuse?…Hard Knocks?…..GO BUCS!!!!

  33. LakeLand Says:

    Defense Rules

The Falcons remaining schedule is as tough as the Bucs

    Seattle
    Tampa Bay
    Minnesota
    New Orleans
    Tampa Bay
    New Orleans
    Carolina

    Only the strong will survive

  34. LakeLand Says:

    813bucboi

    The Bucs has no excuse

They stunk the field for 5 straight weeks

But they has the chance to redeem themselves

  35. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

BUCMAN who are you to say anyone can’t change? Jameis hasn’t stolen anything and has been a model citizen since being drafted so where has he committed anything again??? You think this uber driver fits the bill? She changes her story, not sure who groped her though they were sitting right next to her then says this isn’t about the money but lawyers up with the very lawyer tha rep’d erica kinsman the gold digging slore? Jameis is 23 years old and probably gives more of his money and time to needy and worthy causes in a season than you and all the posters combined. He’s still learning to be a man and dealing with fame and fortune. He is a better person than you and the majority of people in tampa .

  37. Pelbuc Says:

Basement Bucs thanks to GM Licht and co. Wrong QB, wrong RB, wrong LT and wrong defense. And JW is not only not the franchise savior everyone thought, but he will set us back 6-7 yrs while the idiot Bucs break the bank on him.

  38. Mike Says:

    DeBerg-best play action passer ever!

  39. Broy34isExcitedForGruden+Jameis Says:

Db55 thank you. Winston was fantastic in two games. One before his shoulder was messed up the second right after. But before the second injury to it. Enough about Fitz being better because I know how foolish it is to say. Jameis isn’t being sued. He isn’t gonna get suspended. And he will be the Bucs QB in 2018 and it’s funny people think otherwise.
