Spotlight On QB Hits; Jacquies Smith Revival

November 7th, 2017

“Just pick your own darn blitz, none of em’ get through anyway.

In this tropical region, where quarterback sacks are about as common as quality bagel shops, Bucs fans have been reduced to caring greatly about quarterback hits.

That’s an official stat that means just what the words imply: legal shots taken by a QB from a defensive player.

The Bucs delivered zero against Carolina last week and managed three against Drew Brees in Sunday’s debacle.

For the record, the Bucs’ offensive line has allowed just 43 QB hits. That’s 13th best in the NFL!

But the defense is not close to matching that. Frankly, Joe is afraid to look up their official QB-hits total. Joe doesn’t want to be ill. But with eight sacks in eight games, the Bucs are, in fact, last in the league in that department, eight in eight games. The next worst team has 13.

So QB hits matter.

And somehow, cut former Bucs defensive end sack artist Jacquies Smith latched on with the Lions and got his first significant playing time last night in Green Bay. Whaddya know? Smith registered two QB hits in the game.

Why exactly was Smith, who blew out his knee 14 months ago and the Bucs paid for his rehab, not allowed to stick around? Instead, the Bucs banked on guys like Darryl Tapp and Will Clarke to rush the passer. Smith, 27, was very effective when healthy in 2014 and 2015 (13.5 sacks).

Lotta strangeness about this 2017 Bucs season.

How about instead of playing Fitz, we take Ryan Griffin off the IR eligible list and start him at QB. Let’s see what he can do…

  2. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Poor management by Gomer Licht in the personnel department there is no rhyme nor reason on how this team is being built, the guty up in jville has done a great job building a team through the defense and really weird they will probably be playing meaningful games in Decemebr

  3. JJBucFan Says:

This team makes me want to cry!! I honestly believe the coaching staffs from Jesuit, Berkley, Calvary or CCC is more competent than our “GURUS”.

Great way to summarize it. Saw a writer for whatdabuc at the airport last night (actually met a couple dudes associated with them – nice guys); and he had that same sentiment pretty much. More confused / baffled than anything. I really have tortured my wife pretty bad by making her a Bucs fan. One day lol

  5. 813bucboi Says:

this speaks volumes to the GM and coaching staff….if licht wanted to get rid of smith or thought he wasn’t healthy, why didn’t the defensive coaches or the HC suggest we bring him along slow because we have nothing else….at the very worse let play on obvious passing downs…..

this ranks right up their with having Winston throw 40 and 38 times with a bum shoulder….

SPRING CLEANING CANT COME FAST ENOUGH!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!

Jw elusive would be much higher if he wasn’t. Did you see the hit Fitz took? Vonn Bell clobbered him. And that is why the Bucs suck but wtf do I know?

  7. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Casey

I’ll suspect you’ll get your wish. They have activitated Griffin from the IR and he will be the #2.

But if Fitz messes it up or there is an opportunity to play Griffin I think DK is like us and would like to see if Griffin is just a promising practice player or can do it under the big lights.

I hope they go through the entire lineup this way. It’s time to give Donavan Smith a rest and try some other guys. I wanta now if Benenoch can play.

  8. Bucsfanman Says:

Lord C- My wife was “jumped in” with our Super Bowl victory many moons ago. We keep a straight-jacket in the spare room for when one or the other creeps toward the edge. It keeps you from throwing remotes and beers! The clerk at Best Buy always gives me strange looks when I buy remotes in bulk 10-20 at a time right before the season starts. Thankfully, my wife hasn’t found my stash yet! I’ve got 4 remotes left!!!

  9. Bird Says:

Ouch. WAtch smith continue to put up numbers

  10. ClodHopper Says:

There’s just some positions Licht isn’t good at evaluating. RB and Dline are the most obvious. He knows his wrs and lbs tho!!

Too bad dline is the second most important position/group in the game.

  11. Bird Says:

Play griffin. Why not. Fitz is short term fix and won’t Be on team next year.

  12. DB55 Says:

It’s working out perfectly for Koetter he’ll have HIS qb (Griffin) in there in no time then bc of the oline he’ll be back on IR in no time.

  13. Lord Cornelius Says:

Bucsfanman that’s hilarious lol. My wife didn’t even get to experience the window of Bucs winning – but we both went to FSU and I got her into the sport a lot more right before Winston won the championship. She was crying at the game asking why I’d done this to her lol. It was actually a bit comforting to see a bunch of Bucs fans for the first time in a while (since we live in Denver); so we could share in the misery together while realizing life goes on

  14. unbelievable Says:

Lol. My soon-to-be-wife has only known the Bucs since 2011… So nothing but losing outside of last season.

She still asks me all the time why I had to choose such a bad team. As if I had a choice. I’ll bleed red and pewter til the day I die

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

Denver, eh? At least you guys can go to a dispensary in these dark times!
I wish I could say that it’ll be alright (being a Buc fan) but, ’tis the life of a Buc fan!
    Life goes on.

  16. Joeypoppems Says:

I slightly disagree with you Joe. The reason we are banking on guys like Tapp and Clarke is because we were banking on Noah Spence and Jaq Smith to be 100% healthy and stay healthy the whole season instead of bringing in pass rushers via FA or the draft.

As Joe (Lee) said on one of last weeks Ira podcasts. Licht’s biggest mistake is counting on injured players to bounce back. 2016 with V-Jax and Luis Murphy and now this season with Spence and Jaq Smith.

  17. Not there yet Says:

3 lineman on the Lions playing us? Don’t let Winston play that game because they know this team to well and they’ll have a lot to prove

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

@unbelievable- Congrats on your “soon to be” marriage.
Tell her to hang in there. Statistically, we’re bound to have a good season if for nothing but pure chance!!!

  19. Zwak Says:

Griffin has skills and I would like to see him play also!

  20. unbelievable Says:

thanks Bucsfanman, it’s gotta happen sooner or later, right?!?

  21. Bucsfanman Says:

You’re growing up before our very eyes, unbelievable!!! Stay happy! ๐Ÿ™‚

  22. unbelievable Says:

Ha- I was talking about the Bucs having a good season sooner or later, lol.

But yes, marriage as well I suppose. Thank you sir!

  23. ClodHopper Says:

    Yeah unbelievable, Congrats.

We might disagree on virtually everything but I’m still happy to see good things happen to fellow Americans and fellow Buc fans. Cheers

I kinda feel bad for her but I’m happy for you!! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿ˜‚

    Poor management by Gomer Licht

That’s a good analogy, with Dirk Barney Fife Koetter and Mike Goober Pyle Smith.

  26. unbelievable Says:

LOL Clod. That last line genuinely made me laugh, thanks.

We’ve been together for over 7 years now, so she’s well aware of what she’s getting into!

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“Why exactly was Smith…not allowed to stick around?”

Um, because he was constantly injured. You think he’ll play long where he is? Yeah, sure. He’ll be on IR with a week or two.

  28. BUC_40 Says:

Can you imagine what Rex Ryan could do with Lavonte & Kwon. Bet he could get pressure from those two!

GRUDEN & RYAN for TAMPA 2018

  29. Rrsrq Says:

While Dwight Freeny has 2.5 sacks in two games

  30. THETRUTH Says:

Lets get off of Smith bandwagon, guy has lived on Injured list his whole career..

wow QB hit, get me a QB sack !!! what we settle for hits after QB has thrown a 25 yard pass. we sunk to a new low! stupid stat, and why do we dwell on players who no longer with team so much.

It does kill me how we sign TAPP and guy is on injury list for game, why do we sign damaged goods???
