“‘Embarrassing’ Is The Right Word”

October 17th, 2017

More from Bucs head man.

It wasn’t only the defense.

That’s the word from winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter. In his weekly sitdown with WFLA-TV Channel 8 raconteur Dan Lucas (this week, it was a standup), Koetter explained it wasn’t just the defense that shat on the carpet Sunday in Phoenix. His offense wasn’t without blame.

When Lucas said several players told him the game was “embarrassing,” Koetter did not argue.

“‘Embarrassing’ is the right word,” Koetter said. “We just didn’t come out ready to play. We knew Arizona’s gameplan. They didn’t change anything. They just changed their running back.”

And Koetter fired off a salvo at his offense, too.

“We needed to keep pace,” Koetter said. “We had too many individual breakdowns” on offense.

That game was just so awful by the Bucs defense, that the stench reminds Joe of some of those regular beatdowns this team suffered way too many times in the post-Chucky era, beatdowns that led to the demise of Raheem Morris, Greg Schiano and Lovie Smith.

Joe will write more about this later this morning. In the meantime, the full Koetter interview with Lucas can be viewed below, courtesy of WFLA-TV Channel 8.

    Lovie-like, Schiano-like, Morris-like, whatever you want to call it…

The performance by the defense was inexcusable. Simple as that.

  2. Buddy Says:

Having a head coach like this guy is “embarrassing”. Not exactly carrying a big stick anymore. Funny how that arrogance can come back to bite you in the butt. He’s won nothing & you crowned him a “winning” coach. Hasn’t even had a good a season as Raheem did at 10~6.

  3. Viejo_Sombrero19 Says:

This offense is a joke because of the play calling choices and the other teams aren’t fooled by anything we do. It’s so repetitive and boring, except for when Jameis Winston throws behind the receivers above the receivers head or 4 feet ahead of their stride. Other than that it’s mostly the scheme.

  4. Bucsfan107 Says:

Do we put Fitz in and give winston the jarred Goff treatment and groom him seemed stupid and now he looks elite ?fitz seems to fit koeettets style of offense better say what you want those were some tight windows to throw to what is the answer for this team @ joe please I need insight to this. Thanks

  5. Bucsfan107 Says:

    Koetter sorry

  6. Bucsfan107 Says:

And I get it prevent d whatever but those are tight windows as I said anyways and doesn’t the qb have ability to audible out of play that won’t work call me dumb if I am wrong but I am worried for our team.

  7. Bucn Enough Says:

Go back to the old unis ( super bowl era )….new ones look like clown outfits, and they play like a bunch of clowns…

  8. Rrsrq Says:

The Bucs have at least one or two totally embarrassing games per year since Chucky, it all started that Monday night against the Colts. Chucky maybe didn’t get drug like some others, but that is when the swoon started with embarrassing losses.

  9. Clodhopper Says:

“that the stench remind Joe of some of those regular beatdowns this team has suffered way too many of in the post-Chucky era, beatdowns that led to the demise of Raheem Morris, Greg Schiano and Lovie Smith.”

That’s why I hate the reply, “it’s just one game.” Every year we have a couple of those “It’s just one game” games and every year we suck!! It’s not just one game. Its a continuation of a bad habit!!

  10. Grt2 Says:

Get off Koetter man . This microwave society is sickening. Our dbs are bad at best, our lbs are studs, our d line is old and slow. We have a 3rd year QB not a 10 yr vet. The only way you get instant results in the NFL is if can consistently run the ball and very few teams can. It takes time simple as that. It’s the NFL the most competitive league in sports if you want to root for a front runner go watch baseball or the NBA.

  11. Buc believer Says:

Only one more week will you be able to call him “winning” head coach Joe. Then it will be “mediocre” head coach then the week after that it will be “losing” head coach. Let’s all hope and pray that doesn’t happen.

  12. Not there yet Says:

Good offense can overcome a bad defense in this era of football. Here’s an identical coach so you have a bad defense ok but what if the excuse on offense. This team keeps putting on second half points when teams call off their dogs and somehow people looks at the final stats and say the offense played good. Same sorry offense we saw in the preseason

  13. Chris Says:

When’s the Gruden induction/ reintroduction ceremony again?

  14. Big Stinky Says:

Other than the 2 INT’s Fitzy ran the offense better than JW3 has ALL year, 4 TD’s in a quarter and a half. I know Fitz is NOT as good as Jameis but what will it hurt to let Winston sit and let his shoulder heal. Maybe Fitz can get this offense off to a better start than Jameis has. We can’t keep getting behind in games and abandoning the run. Hope Fitzy starts this week. What do we have to lose? No more excuses! Playoffs or Bust! Go BUCS!

  15. Bucsfanman Says:

Here’s what I can’t figure out, and it’s been like this through 3-4 coaches, why can’t the coaches SEE and FEEL the game in real time?
I’m no expert, but I can see when something is and isn’t working. If it is working, leave it alone. If not, CHANGE IT! Why is this so difficult?
You can’t tell me that Koetter didn’t sense something wasn’t right.
We invested a lot in this guy to change the culture and bring success. He had better learn to adapt on the fly or this will be a long season.

  16. LakeLand Says:

    Embarrassing is the correct word.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

    yes dirk…you are embarrassing!!!!….GO BUCS!!!

    @REALIST
    @LC

is dirk still coaching the lovie out of players?….BS…LOL…GO BUCS!!!

  18. grafikdetail Says:

@Viejo_Sombrero19 Joe won’t go at the offensive staff like he does the defense even though we’re supposed to have an offensive guru head coach & “weapons for winstons”

@Grt2 i agree with you somewhat BUT a 30-year-old 1st year offensive minded head coach took the Rams league’s worst offense from a year ago and is now one of the top scoring offenses with less talent… Koetter is just like lovie & most older coaches took stuck in their antiquated schemes & dont want to innovate

  19. JJBucFan Says:

    ^^THIS^^

  20. Bucsfanman Says:

@grafik- It’s hard to argue that point. The most glaring issue I’ve seen is the lack of creativity in the play-calling.
For one thing, just because DJax is fast doesn’t mean you can ONLY throw the go-route to him.

  21. Bucsfan107 Says:

How is that the play calling winston does not have to throw to djax every play he has so many options out there you really think the game plan means he has to throw to one guy ? No one executes the game plan therefore who knows what it is ?

  22. Mike Johnson Says:

I’ve said it a million tiomes here. You’d better be able to stop somebody in this league. I screamed for defensive improvement. But we went with OJ (one catch per game) Howard. Lets give Jameis more weapons you said. What good are the weapons when they fail to fire because of..user error? Give the Bills the X factor. Everybody knows jameis tendencies. Start Fiz and let jameis rest his shoulder.
And No, embarrassing is not the right word. I can’t use the appropriate one because Joe might ban me. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!
