McCoy Talks Meaning Of Loss

October 18th, 2017

Gerald McCoy speaks

The good news after the Bucs’ debacle in Arizona is that it’s just one loss, one game.

But was it really just another loss? Joe asked Gerald McCoy about that today.

McCoy spoke to media outside his locker this afternoon.

JoeBucsFan.com: Is the mindset of the team more of, ‘Hey, it was just one game, it happens, we move on, we keep doing what we’re doing.’ Or is the loss something a little bit bigger than that?

Gerald McCoy: The loss was we can’t keep beating ourselves. If we’re going to lose a game, the other team needs to beat us. Arizona didn’t do nothing we didn’t plan for. We made a lot of mistakes ourselves, way too many. So the mindset is we have to just stop beating ourselves. Gotta start a lot faster, finish even faster than that. It all start with today at practice.

The vibe through the Bucs locker room today sure felt like a team that got a wake-up call. Sunday wasn’t a routine five-point loss on the road. It was something more.

  1. Lamarcus Says:

Well he leads by example which is good enough for some fans. Sam excuse of we keep beating ourselves. He should be tried of this crap. Call out ur team? U call out fans to fight publically. Not a good look. Gmc should be cut

  2. bculaw Says:

I sure hope we see some more aggression and urgency on both sides of the ball this weekend.

The defense has looked soft and passive all season, and the offense has looked very predictable and bland outside of the TD to Howard. For once, I’d love to see our defense play an attacking style with more blitzing and man-to-man coverage, if for no other reason than to switch it up. Let LVD play “down hill” and someone please lay down a BIG hit (I can’t remember the last time I saw a Buc blast someone!!!).

On the offense, I sure would like to see some hurry up early in the game. If not, then at least incorporate more screens, slants, and roll outs. Give JW some easy reads and easy throws early, and let him get out of the pocket a few plays. I get that we want him to be a pocket passer in this offense for the most part, and that we want the scheme to be vertical, but the guy was 2nd in the league in rushing TDs at the QB position two seasons ago and seemingly hasn’t left the pocket since!

And finally, can someone on the O-line open up a dang hole for the RBs!?!?!!?

  3. mike10 Says:

Dearrrr God, this feels like deja vu…

  4. DB55 Says:

Best DT in the history of the NFL. GETS BLOCKED BY 50 GUYS EVERY PLAY and still leads the league in 1st qrt sacks for the last 85 years. What would the Bucs be without him?

  5. mike10 Says:

Lamarcus, we can’t just cut him…

Does anyone realize that our team is usually playing bad when McCoy is the loudest guy on the D Line though? After the turnaround (and at large part because of him), we couldn’t hear enough from Ayers. Even Gholston spoke, and he never speaks!…

Where’s the intensity? Where’s the accountability?

  6. ClodHopper Says:

He doesn’t seem to be as mad about this loss as he was at Ronde or the fans. Same old same old Gerald. How long have you been talking about fast starts? That’s right. Your entire tenure!!! Well except that one season you didn’t enjoy.

  7. Lamarcus Says:

U can’t cut cuz of salary cap. Licht didn’t sign him to mega contract. We do well or the same without him. With him we still get blown out. What’s your point? Whatever he is doing down there in tampa still not working. We need guys from winning cultures to rid of the diseases called blowouts

  8. Buc believer Says:

He is such a joke, I wish he would just be honest and say he would rather stay home on Sunday and play with his little action figures rather than pretend to play football. Dude may have a few stats but they are garbage stats, and besides we all know stats are for losers.

  9. AlteredEgo Says:

McCoy has that speech down pat

  10. Buc_The_World Says:

You would think by now this team would have had enough “wake up calls”. The game in Arizona last year should have been a wake call, yet it took until Atlanta embarrassed them on Thursday night for them to finally take action. That should have been the end of it, however it happens again against the vikings this year and there is no sense of urgency from the players or the coaches until now. Why does this team have to wait until their backs are against the wall to have a sense of urgency? They do this in seasons and they do it in games. It’s a mentality of not taking wins seriously. I have been one of the most vocal supporters of this team and I still am, but I have to call a spade a spade. Something I noticed in the Minnesota game that worried me which I didn’t think it was a problem but now I am beginning to see it is. This team has has no “Fight” attitude they have a “survival” attitude. What I mean by this is that in the Minnesota game if Xavier Rhodes and the rest of the Vikings team was clowning me, being disrespectful getting in my face like they were, that alone in itself would be enough for me to clap back, but mentally the Bucs were not phased by it. Where is the dog in this team. instead of smiling and dapping AP up for scorching you, knock his ass in the dirt. Gerald sat here at the beginning of the season talking about he has to do more, well that also means be a leader and putting some dog in this defense. the problem is he has talent but no dog, that is why this team plays better with Kwon, because Kwon has dog in him. This team needs to find an identity, a mean one!!!

  11. Hawaiian Buc Says:

What do you expect him to say? It won’t matter, because the haters are going to hate. He’s one of the top rated DT’s in the league, but let’s go ahead and blame every loss on him. Let’s blame him for the offense struggling too. It was probably him who wanted to go for 2 on every TD and go for it late in the second quarter. Geez, this routine is getting so old.

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

Show your dissatisfaction. Don’t watch them. It’s your prerogative.
He’s a Buc. I’m a Buc fan. Until that changes, I’m rooting for him and the team.

  13. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Trade him for a Kicker, they never get double teamed and licht knows kickers

  14. Lamarcus Says:

He needs call out his teammates like he called out fans …..Publically. there is everything wrong with this picture.

  15. Jolly Bucs Fan Says:

Go back and watch the game and McCoy was the only one on defense playing like he meant it.

I would love to see one of you “Cut Mccoy” folks to be a coach. Id get the popcorn ready and enjoy seeing you, in only a few minutes, become known as the worst coach in NFL History.

I sure hope the falcons/saints/panthers are looking for a new GM or coach. Ill sign all of you up.

  16. Mike Johnson Says:

One never knows Buc fans….It willbe difficult to beaat the Bils in Buffalo. But the football Gods are strange indeed. Bucs just might..take a stand? We’ve all seen stranger things. Don’t quite count’em out just yet. Lets just watch and see. I don’t think they will win. But I also hope I am wrong. I also hope Koetter grows a pair and rest Jameis Even if he says he’s ready. As for you McCoy haters..Ever notice how even worse we are without him?

  17. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“He needs call out his teammates like he called out fans …..Publically. there is everything wrong with this picture.”

    ——-

So you want him to single out players and put their names out in the media? You really think that would work? If the answer is yes, I don’t think you will ever understand.

  18. Lamarcus Says:

If I was the gm. Gmc will be long gone before the season even started. I will build the team with guys who love to win. And would kill someone if they lost. We don’t need a guy to just his job. This is bad. We need leaders

I don’t care if they are not as talented as gmc. But winners always win. Losers always lose. This is a human nature factor and proven.

  19. Q Says:

    McCoy is garbage

  20. Zwak Says:

Best get off in the league..

  21. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“If I was the gm. Gmc will be long gone before the season even started. I will build the team with guys who love to win. And would kill someone if they lost. We don’t need a guy to just his job. This is bad. We need leaders

I don’t care if they are not as talented as gmc. But winners always win. Losers always lose. This is a human nature factor and proven.”

    ——

If you were the GM and you did this, you would be fired immediately. That’s so stupid. Second, how do you know GMC doesn’t want to win? Do you know him? Are you in the locker room? You don’t think if he didn’t want to win, we would have gotten rid of him by now? You just don’t think logically. I wish I could help you, but if you really think that way, you are truly helpless.

  22. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Lamarcus,

This whole rah rah leadership BS is just that – BS. These guys aren’t high school football players. It’s their jobs. If they aren’t motivated by themselves, no one is going to motivate them. You probably believe in passionate pre-game speeches and “win one for the Gipper” type crap really means something don’t you? What a joke! I would love to see your boss come up to you before work and single you out in front of all your co-workers, and see how you respond. I’m sure you would put out your best performance.

  23. Lamarcus Says:

    Yes Hawaii

Yes call them out. He called out fans like the wuss he is but he can’t call out his guys. Tj ward did. he would probably get beat up. Flat on his message

  24. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Funny thing is, how many more guys do you need to see leave Tampa and dominate before you realize the really good players aren’t the problem? If guys like Talib and Blount go on to star for other teams, what the hell do you think McCoy would do? LMAO at all this stupidity. Only a complete idiot doesn’t learn from previous mistakes. We’re all upset by all the losing. I’m beat down by it. But how in the hell does it make sense to blame the guy who is clearly playing the best football on the team right now?

The cavalry isn’t coming to save us. We aren’t going to get a 10 sack DE joining the team this year. We aren’t getting the second coming of Deion Sanders on our roster. This is what we have. Talent isn’t the problem. Execution is. It’s really not that confusing.

  25. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Yes call them out. He called out fans like the wuss he is but he can’t call out his guys. Tj ward did. he would probably get beat up. Flat on his message”

    ———-

TJ Ward and McCoy said the exact same thing!!!!! Are you really stupid, or just trolling? McCoy said they didn’t do their job! TJ Ward didn’t single anyone out. They both literally said the exact same thing. It just shows how much of an agenda you really have.

  26. DB55 Says:

The brainless has entered the room. He spews his nonsense as gmc’s child making liquids seep from his mouth. Jesus man you’re still alive? Counting down the days. So yea the CANCER(93) needs to do its job.

McDonald may not be as talented as mr. swirl soft-serve ice cream but he has no quit in him. McDonald is a true professional who has HEART which is more than mr. I’ve led the league in 1st qrt sacks.

Chit I bet you even Baker could out play soft-serve in the 3tech spot. Last week he beat a double team for a TFL. But but he got double teamed yea and a doctor got blood on his hands, guess what? It’s part of the job.

Speaking of cancer got to hear a local radio personality completely lose it on air a few weeks ago, thought he was gonna die on air. I couldn’t stop smiling.

  27. Bucsfan951 Says:

Lamarcus: you saying gmc should be cut and not at least traded and get some value from him leaving the team, would make you a horrible gm. Stop with this whole “if I was gm” thing. You’re not! Now go back to flipping burgers like the rest of us.

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

This post is borderline sick. Wishing for people to die? Geez, dude, calm down. It’s a game. You’ve got some perspective issues.

  29. DB55 Says:

    The brainless speaks again.

    Riddle me this:

Player 1 has 17 tackles and 2 sacks in 5 games. He makes 13.25 mil this year.

Player 2 has 11 tackles and 2 sacks in 5 games as a back-up to player 1 and makes 2 mil this year.

    Who’s the real idiot?

  30. Bucamania Says:

Glad you guys had a fun time in Arizona. Don;t worry about the game. Just one loss. No biggie. You still got paid.

  31. Lamarcus Says:

Well not cut trade makes sense. While he still has value. It doesn’t take a rocket science to be figure it out. I prefer to be a coach anyway. Gmc is your favorite player so your chain of thougt/ mind is kinda foggy let’s get real. Use his salary for elite talent and winners we can go that playoffs and that sb.

  32. DB55 Says:

    Bucsmania gets it.

Fckn you pay me! Revis and gmcs motto from day one!

Except gmc says “forget you can I have my money please and thank you. Ouch I got a paper cut, I’ll need to go on IR now. Hopefully I can hang out with Mickey Mouse for a few weeks. WAIT I can buy my own Mickey Mouse YES now I’m happy happy.”

  33. ClodHopper Says:

I can only speak for myself but what I expect him to say is, ” I relinquish my duties as a leader and don’t want to be captain anymore. Obviously I suck at that position and am a detriment. I’ll still work really hard… at finding a camera, and I’ll still care a whole lot… about superheroes.”

    Or

    “I’m moving in to Buffalo”

  34. 813bucboi Says:

    heard it all before….GO BUCS!!!!

  35. Curse of Gruden Says:

At least Joe interviewed the right player for this story, GMC sure knows about losing.

  36. ClodHopper Says:

He can sleep well at night now. Cuz he knows what it’s like to get punched by a superhero. It’s called the Cardinals!!

  37. Capt.Tim Says:

Lord, what a collection of Simpletons.

I would like to say, That I hope you all finally get a lil brighter, and start understanding the basics of football.

But it would be a lie.

If you haters got a little brighter- the fastfood joints would a lot of their work force!!

Then where Would I stop for a burger?

McCoy will be a cornerstone of this team- until he decides to reture, and take his place in the hall of Fame

And all the crying from you hating Fry chefs and Burger assemblers wont change a thing.
    So cry on! Lol
Just make sure my Fries are ready!

  38. DB55 Says:

    Brainless #2 joins the conversation.

I once met a guy who called himself Capt Tim irl and he was a complete idiot. Couldn’t spell, use a computer or read. You remind me of that guy. He talked made game until he had to use his brain and then the next thing you know he disappeared and we found him cutting grass with a pair of scissors.

Please tell me more about how Gerald McCoy will be in the hall of shame I mean fame. Lmao. Joe you need to move to a paid subscription. But don’t accept ebt cards so Capt Tim can’t get in.

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

You know, I look at all the years of losing, all the Anthony Collins, Ghost Johnsons, ASJs, Aguayos, Piscatellis, Barrons, Fosters, Clayborns, I look at the coaches like Raheem, Schiano, and Lovie and I think, why did Gerald McCoy sign that guy?! Couldn’t Gerald have done more research and gotten us Jeff Fisher or somebody?! Josh McCown? Maybe he owed him money! Gerald has a soccer team in Carrolwood from what I hear! He probably funnels Buccaneer money through this team!
I don’t know. I look back and THIS is what I see! Yep!

  40. ATLBucsfan Says:

They didn’t just beat themselves, they didn’t show up. How, after the ease of scoring on the first drive by Arizona, the team does not go out on the second drive and tighten things, make the tackles, get off the blocks, bat down the passes and ‘show up’ is beyond me. And then they don’t show up even after the second score! This is what I mean about players aren’t tired of losing on this team. I totally discount the second half here folks…technically the Bucs were out of it by halftime which they proved in the first few minutes of the second half by starting in a daze. If this loss isn’t a catalyst for running the table ~ 11 wins this season then this team needs serious changes in personnel and coaching. I don’t care about the opponent. This team needs to consistently kick some serious butt to prove to me it has shed their old ways. Good luck coaches!

  41. nate123456 Says:

This team will be 8-8 you heard it here first

  42. Mr Ed Says:

The hate McCoy gets is ludicrous, coming from purely emotional mentally shallow fan frauds that want to cut and fire everyone after a loss.

Let’s see – the scheme seemed to handcuff David, per his commentary.

Mike Smith – time to earn the extra money ownership may have granted you too hastily. You have great athletes, why can’t you figure out how to get some damn pass rush? And here’s a hint to the idiots proclaiming McCoy to be the problem and wanting him gone. Idiots is too kind for these fools.

Smitty needs to engage. Now. Period.

  43. orlbucfan Says:

DB55 park it somewhere. The bloviating gets boring. You a Bucs fan or not? I assume the 55 in your UN refers to Derrick Brooks. GMC and the team didn’t lose this one in AZ. DK and Smith did. You trying to score points as a troll? You stink at it.

  44. DB55 Says:

    Orlbuc

Player 1 has 17 tackles and 2 sacks in 5 games. He makes 13.25 mil this year.

Player 2 has 11 tackles and 2 sacks in 5 games as a back-up to player 1 and makes 2 mil this year.

    Who’s the real idiot?

  45. ElioT Says:

McCoy is the leader of the “of sh*t here we go again” movement on defense when the going gets tough.

You could see it on his face during the game Sunday. He looked defeated in the 2nd quarter.

He’s a great player, but he is NOT a leader and there’s nothing wrong with that as long as you’re not selling him as such.

No player is afraid to have to answer to Gerald in the locker room after a piss poor performance.

This defense needs more dogs and less puppies.

Kwon is the only one they have and he can’t do anything from the sidelines in street clothes.

They’d better get this fixed fast.

  46. Bucsfanman Says:

@DB55- Player 2 is a bargain. If he could play 90% of the snaps, we’d be good. It’s likely the player you refer to is McDonald who has actually spelled Baker more than GMC. In this case, McDonald should be alongside GMC as a starter. Maybe we’d get better production.
As you say, but what do I know!

  47. Capt.Tim Says:

Db55- you better not be sneaking away from your deep fryer station, to post here!!
I get cold fries- and Your Manager will have your hide!

  48. DB55 Says:

Yes SIR! From what I see when McDonald is in the 3tech with baker at nt that’s the best combo.

My starting line up is Ayers, Baker, McDonald, Gholston. And Gholston staying in on 3rd down.

    But wtf do I know?

  49. DB55 Says:

I got your fries right here lawn boy.

  50. Lamarcus Says:

    Mentally shallow?

Our team gets whipped by senior citizens. While our leader of the defense watches like fans. Loser mentally ill fans who enjoy ass whooping.

It was said and proven. We cannot be a contender with players frpm losing teams. It’s not the player fAult but it is what it is. Get real

  51. Lamarcus Says:

McDonald know how to win. McDonald >gmc. Gmc is more talented but I’ll put my money on mcdonald any day. We shows up. He won a sb. He saw th ass whooping and he called in the troops. He didn’t wait to halftime to start playing football.

Gmc gotta go. Along with these other guys who been in losing cultures so long. Jw cant be around them either. Losing ways is gettin to him too. It’s sad and it’s a disease. What do u guys not understand about that?

    It’s not about talent

  52. Lamarcus Says:

And why do u think so many great hof players never win sb? Gm’s fill their rosterling with the best talent but realize the losing they been thru and come back to haunt them. All we can say he good while giving up their balls in payback games. This will continue.

Licht and koetter will trade or cut this guy. Mark my words

Listen to Joe and Ira. This is not about talent

  53. Steven007 Says:

Posted this on the IRA thread but it’s pertinent here too:

How a guy who came back from two season ending injuries to start his career before beginning a 4 year run where he had 31.5 sacks from the 3t/DT spot is considered mentally weak is beyond me. This is a guy who dominated at the HS, college and pro level. Then had to wait 3 years to start a run where he’s missed only 5 games in 5 seasons. According to this mindless blather Aaron Donald is a career loser too isn’t he? Unable to wrest the Rams (or Pitt) from the depths and single handedly bring them to glorious heights. Guess what? Donald will soon be making a whole lot more money than GMC to do his version of the same damn thing. Speaking of career losers what about JJ Watt? What’s he won at the pro level? I’ll save you the effort – the same as McCoy, Suh and Atkins: nothing. But Malcolm Brown of the Pats? Now that beast single handedly won the Pats a SB!

  54. Capt.Tim Says:

I once met a man, who said he enjoyed his fry chef job. Said he had met a new special someone at work. Someone who went by “Tmaxipad”
The man said he went by DB55.

His idolization has led DB55 to following Tacipad into his hobby as Troll.
Touching, both sitting there on there computers, smelling of Fries and chicken nuggets. Posting and trolling away.

To bad you have to fry away so many houts, DB55!
Otherwise you would have seen McCoy blowing up opposing Offensive lines, Time and time again, on “Hard Knocks”. The opposing coaches, and our coaches- lavishing praise on McCoys incredible talents

Or listened to opposing coaches after the Game- Telling McCoy hes an incredible player- and that they had to Double team him every play

Or notice that his peers have voted McCoy to SIX probowls.

But meybe you and your special boy Tmaxi are just jelous.
    McCoy has acvomplished so much.
An you two have managed to do nothing in life but Troll.

    I see your future.
Attending McCoys infuction ceremony, passing a box of kleenex back and forth!

Oh well- plenty of timre to troll til then.
You’ll pardon us for recognizing you for a simpleton

You’re the moran. Plus, you didn’t answer the question in my commen. I know you can read–somewhat.

  57. Lamarcus Says:

This goes for donald also. Pitt is a losing team and rams a losing team. But donald voices his frustration and his body language gets deranged. I wouldn’t what to f up on is team. Gmc? Per gmc on hard knocks. You have to celebrate after catches and tds cuz that what it is about. Not winning. It’s about celebrating. I swear get this clown off my team TODAY. Trade him and djx for some draft picks and move on.

  58. Jimmy Says:

    >>> You’re the moran. <<<

    Whoops. 🙂

  59. Lamarcus Says:

    Lol ^^^

  60. Lamarcus Says:

Like Joe said. We all passionate fans that we know what’s best for our team. That’s all. Name calling cuz we have different opinions is crazy. We are just passionate bucs fan

  61. Reach87 Says:

Jolly is right. Some of the posters are so hung up on their frustrations that they would cut (cut) arguably our best defensive player. Comical and ridiculous at the same time.

  62. Lamarcus Says:

And so true. He is by far our best player. Do u mean best talent? I agree. But I would trade him for a winning culture any day.

    Also djx needs go

  63. LakeLand Says:

The Bucs definitely didn’t beat themselves against the Cardinals. If anything the Cardinals let up on them.

  64. Clw JB Says:

this team is soft – where the heck is the fire and will, watching this team is like watching my 11 y/o JV Pee Wee team on Saturday morning after an all night video game party at Team Mom’s house…they wake up around the 4 th quarter more often than not…

  65. unbelievable Says:

McDonald plays good when healthy, but he missed 15 games in his last 3 seasons. And that was while being a part-time player.

Anyone thinking he’s gonna play 90% of snaps is delusional at best. BTW, McCoy isn’t even the leader of this defense anymore (a position he was thrust into, but never asked for in the first place). That’s not who he is. So what? Maybe fixate on the 8 other guys on the field who are not doing their job as opposed to 1 of the 3 who actually is.

    I know, he’s too nice.

  66. Lamarcus Says:

Why even question his leadership. He is a role player. Background dancer. We are good with that or nah?

  67. Not there yet Says:

If anyone knows all about losing its this guy, he should be interviewed after every loss because that’s all he does lose and check the stat sheet

  68. MIKE Says:

THIS SEEM’S LIKE THE SAME OLD CRAP THAT WAS SAID LAST YEAR …NO FAITH IN THE BUC’S THEY HAVE TO PROVE THEIR A GOOD TEAM FIRST…….NOT HAPPEN YET!!! SO THEIR STILL A BAD TEAM…….
