Evan Smith talks to Joe

Aaron Rodgers’ former center knows what it’s like to play 14 consecutive weeks of NFL football without a bye.

Joe’s talking about Bucs guard/center Evan Smith, a Tampa Bay leader who isn’t about to tolerate his teammates moaning about a hurricane-induced Week 1 bye.

Smith was a starter for the Packers in 2013. He didn’t miss a game, including a last-second playoff loss to the 49ers.

During that season, the Packers had a Week 4 bye and then wrapped up a playoff berth with a 3-1 record in December.

“Think about teams that have a bye after a few weeks,” Smith told Joe. “I mean, they have all those games after the bye and then hopefully through the playoffs. It’s one of those things, we have to overcome it. You can’t really bitch about it. Mother Nature ain’t going to stop for us. We just have to improvise, if we even need to late in the season because of this.”

As Dirk Koetter said yesterday, this whole bye week twist shouldn’t be any kind of consideration/issue until late November. It simply can’t be in the Bucs’ heads.

That is why the Stick Carriers will be a big part of energizing the team after November.

Although, the mentality of the majority of the team does not need their hand held.

IMO The love of football and their paycheck on Fridays should keep anyone motivated to kick a$$ on game day.

To all of those that joined the JoeBucsFan.com league I set up thank you! I will not be able to participate as my ESPN page is F’d up. It won’t let me click on a team and I have attempted to contact them and let them know but their “Customer Service” Sucks! Have fun guys!

I think every bye thread needs this fact check. I fact checked through two sources I encourage everyone to do their own checks…the NY Times had an article and Walter Football did one from the perspective of NFL gamblers and whether bye teams are a great play. You do get a small edge.

Teams coming out of their bye week win 53% of their games. The advantage is overrated…it’s a 3% advantage.

The good teams win after their byes…the poor teams lose.

St. Pete, this is off topic but the opening game tonite the team at home is 71% covering the spread on opening Thursday kickoff game spread opened at -7 and is up to -9.5 now but the chiefs and -9.5 if that si where it is or even better sure seems like a nice number esp when vegas inflates lines on big public viewing nights….way off topic i know

Your right it can’t be in there heads so stop talking about it every hour on the hour please no more bucs takes on something no one can control. Honestly with this storm coming down how many people in the state of Florida would honestly have watched the game if it was at a neutral site anyway. Oh my bad because there honestly isn’t much else to talk about.

This team will play a Sunday then Thursday night game in a couple weeks, it’s a good thing that happened early in the season, if they had a Thursday night game later in the season then I’d be worried but with this time and all the time they’ve rested veterans I don’t think they’ll wear down, media is seriously exaggerating the situation. But I do think they should soon more and give young players a chance to rest vets in game

Maybe the Bucs and Dolphins should get to carry 55 players on the active roster as compensation… 🙂

  7. Garv Says:

THANK YOU! Enough whining. And the fans are FAR worse in that regard than the players BTW. #ByeInThePlayoffs !

  8. shouldhavedraftedeifert Says:

Hopefully they play with a little more chip on their shoulders because of this. The league hates you, everyone else gets a bye, so kick the s#$t out of them alllllll!

I would be happy to respond but I feel certain you are a far better handicapper than me. Again my father was a bookie but I basically learned to not gamble. LOL

But I think you’ve put in your due diligence. If I was a gambler I’d probably lean towards college games…especially the mismatches where they simply can’t get a line large enough to honestly cover the spread in talent.

The NFL is scary to me but hey no guts no glory. I do prefer sports betting because in essence you’re matching your expertise against all the other bettors.

Vegas does not care…they only want a line to split the bets equally so they cannot lose. They simply take their 10% cut and give one bettors money to the other.

Looks like you’ve done your research and if you think the bettors are making a mistake here jump on it.

How much would it cost to cut bait with the lazy, whiny Ghost Part II?

The worst part of the Bye is zero news coming out of One Buc Palace.

it would have been great for the commish to step up and make an exception for the Dolps and Bucs during week one and let them practice. Having a bye this early is unusual and requires unusual circumstances. I don’t like the idea of our Bucs having to rest for 5 whole days before they can practice again. This commisioner has always kinda sucked!!!
