The New Closer?

September 14th, 2017

Target: Mike Glennon.

Step aside, Bruce Sutter. Make room, Mariano Rivera. It seems the Bucs may have a closer to join your ranks.

Nothing gets Joe worked up more then thinking about the sad past decade of the Bucs and the amount of Team Glazer loot flushed down a toilet, and draft picks wasted, trying to find a guy, any guy, who could get double-digit sacks.

And the one guy they did have who could get double-digit sacks, the Bucs let go for no good reason!

So Joe has high hopes that Noah Spence finally fills that void. The guy is a warrior for the way he played one-handed last year to end the season when he had his separated shoulder jammed back into place on the field of play. That’s a man.

And even with a wing hanging all but useless, Spence was still able to bring Cam Newton down.

Now, if only Spence can turn that into sacks.

Could the Bucs have their version of a closer? Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith seems to believe Spence could be that guy.

With hopes Spence can break through this year for the Bucs as a feared pass rusher, Joe asked Smith yesterday if he had any sort of snap count goal for Spence on Sunday. Now Joe knows this will largely be dictated by the game, something Smith said is correct. But Smith didn’t give Joe any ballpark goal for getting Spence onto the field for a set number of snaps.

What seems clear is Spence is currently a designated pass rusher, and if the situation presents itself, Smith wants Spence on the field in the fourth quarter to bury quarterbacks.

You know, a closer to end a game.

“We think Noah can be a full-time player,” Smith said. “We think we want to have a rotation up front and we want him to be fresh in the fourth quarter, especially if we are in a situation where we want to be rushing the passer. That’s what we want to be doing in the fourth quarter is we want to be playing the pass and not the run.”

So that appears to be Smith’s goal for Spence, not so much snap counts, but to get Spence into the game with gas in the tank in the fourth quarter and unleash him on Mike Glennon.

We know this about Glennon from his Tampa days: There may not be less of a mobile quarterback in the NFL, a perfect target for a designated pass rusher.

A closer, that is.

It’s gonna be like a baby giraffe vs a lion

  3. RayJameisStadium Says:

Yes! I want people to think Glennon is wearing #57.

Chaos starts this Sunday at the House of Pain!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!

  4. Birdman Says:

Playing the pass in the 4th quarter?
Sounds like they plan on playing with a lead in the 4th quarter.. I like the confidence..

Me too buddy. N I love the effort Spence plays with. If he keeps that up n keeps improving the skys the limit. On another note, I just read some Irma stories…man I love bernard reedy now. At first i was scanning waiver wire seeing if we were gona upgrade his spot. Now Im hoping he stays and lights it up. Keep it up B! Go Bucs

  6. Phil Says:

After seeing Michael Bennett this year with the Seahawks I’m glad he’s not here. What a moron.

  7. USMC-BUC Says:

not sold, needs to do something. Needs to make a real “key play” in actual big moment

Not just cleaning up a group sack which has been more of the case.

  8. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

You don’t “snap” a separated shoulder back into place. That would be a dislocated shoulder, which is completely different and usually worse. Generally requires surgery.

    Love the rest though.

  9. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Sorry to get pedantic.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Would you rather have a player with 9 sacks and respects our anthem….or a player with 10 sacks who sits during the anthem “for no good reason”?

  11. tnew Says:

Yeh that strip sack he had on Russel Wilson last year, and the strip sack he had on Jay Cutler had very little impact on those games. SMH

  12. tnew Says:

I went through and iso’d on him for every game last year. He’s better than most of you give him credit for. He causes the QB to step into the pocket on near everyone of his outside moves. I know this is just a highlight reel but the truth is we just need more of this:

if this is nothing but “cleaning up” for teammates.. keep cleaning young man.

  13. Bucfmdy1 Says:

Tanpabaybucfan I would rather have a player with 10 sacks who sits during the anthem “for a good reason” !!!

  14. DoNUTS Says:

I like Spence’s motor but he seems too small to ever be that dominant 10 sack guy. His motor is what gets him sacks…but the 10 sack guys do it with leverage and line skills plus motor. Hope he makes the jump but I didnt see anything different in pre-season from him. Did anyone else? Why would we anticipate change then? I also would pay close attention to coach Smith’s words “I think” rather than I know or believe.

    @Bucfmdy1

The only good reason that I can think of for sitting during the anthem is if you are injured or handicapped……in that case, 10 sacks would be difficult

  16. webster Says:

Police brutality is a good reason.

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’ll take this for sacks….and there is no double digit sack player.
    Spence 7, McCoy 6, Baker 3, LVD 5, Kwon 5, Beckwith 3, Ayers 3, Gholston 3, McDonald 2, Ward 3, Tandy 2, Conte 2, VH3 2, Grimes 2 (rest of defense 2)
That would be 50 sacks…..would have led the NFL last year….Team stats trump individual stats for me.

  18. TouchDownTampaBay Says:

Lol, Webster don’t bother. Nothing gets white guys (myself not included) more angry then not standing for the national anthem (especially if it is race related) and taking down confederate statues.

  19. mike n Says:

Step aside Bruce Sutter… Thats when I lost it. That’s great. I have a feeling @joe is a few years older than me a loved the glory of the Cards early 80’s. Being older and a Brave, I loved getting Kenny Oberfelt in the deal but Bruce Sutter when he came to the Braves was a human gas can.

  20. stpetebucsfan Says:

Team stats trump individual stats for me.

    Amen brother!!!

  21. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Webster, Touchdown, the last time I checked, police brutality had nothing to do with the national anthem. Why sit for the anthem to protest anything? There are other ways to protest, like the old fashioned way and even online now. A person can show love for thier country and fight against the things that aren’t perfect.

  22. Cobraboy Says:

I am thankful Bennett is the Seachickens problem and not the Bucs.

I like football to get away from politics and all that SJW baloney.

If Bennett were a Buc and pulling that crap Tampa fans would be incensed with all the active and retired military presence in the area. No doubt it plays much better in the PNW where the (recently former) mayor is a pedophile.

  23. webster Says:

Yea because many active duty and vets have said they dont have a problem with kneeling. Last i checked, the flag is the symbol that represents the USA and in the USA there is police brutality. Protest are not supposed to be convienient. They are supposed to be in your face. You dont like players kneeling? Then do something other than tell someone what they dont have a right to do. Start holding the perpatrators of police brutality accountable. If you won’t or don’t wan to do that then stfu.

  24. unbelievable Says:

    Well said Bucfmdy1!

But Tampa fans are a very sensitive bunch, as you’ll see.

@Cobraboy- the entire city celebrated the mayor finally getting charged and removed from office. Why do people continue to act like anyone w/ a certain political leaning is somehow okay with that kind of disgusting sh*t? They’re not.

In fact, it was actually a liberal newspaper (gasp!) that broke the story and brought him down.

  25. webster Says:

    @ buceric

Kaep did protest and talk about police brutality and racial injustices online for a year prior to him kneeling. Never heard anybody talk about it so you can save that alternative fact. Its in your face now.

    @ cobra

Players are not only kneeling in Seattle. Not sure what the mayor has to do with anything.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

if you think sitting during the anthem is wrong…..try being unarmed and gunned down for no good reason….

IF PEOPLE RALLYING TO SUPPORT A MAN WHO PROTEST AGAINST INJUSTICE UPSETS YOU, BUT THE INJUSTICE DOESNT, YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  27. BucUtalkinBout Says:

    Thanks Webster

Please note if you are white/European/Caucasian and are NOT WILLING to do what the white group did at FENWAY Park with the Banner to ACKNOWLEDGE racism and not IGNORE it then please STFU telling us what we can and can’t do in a FREE society and just enjoy football guilt free if your conscious allows you to do so

    Go Bucs!!!

  28. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Webster, I NEVER said that Kap doesn’t have the right kneel for the anthem. That’s your alternative fact, I never said it. He has the right. Him having the right, and me agreeing with his decision are two different things. Kneeling for the anthem doesn’t hold the police involved accountable. You’re right, Kap did protest online, and I heard about it, so people DID talk about it. I’m all for that. But if your saying that didn’t work, what has the anthem protest accomplished? Not much. There is nothing I want more in this world than everyone treating everyone else the same. America is more racially equal than any time in our history. Don’t let social media fool you, it was worse in the 80s, it’s just everyone didn’t have instant access to information. America ISN’T the problem, poorly trained police is the problem. I feel as bad for black people killed under questionable circumstances as I do for white people killed the same. And for the record, I don’t want to be associated with alternate facts: I HATE DONALD TRUMP!!!!!!!!

  29. webster Says:

    Buceric

I never said you said you that kaep did not have the right to kneel. Again alternative facts. Go back and read my comment specifically to you. I will give you a hint….it starts with @buceric. Maybe “you” heard about kaep’s comments in the year leading up to him kneeling but 99% of those who are angry at him now didn’t know. Like my teacher use to tell me……sometimes the good have to suffer with the bad. And yes it has already helped. When the crrent potus gave a speech and encouraged the cops to rough up the “criminals”, you saw many law enforcement departments coming out distancing themselves from those comments. Thats a start but we have a long way to go.

  30. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Webster, this is an excerpt of your post at 12:34: You dont like players kneeling? Then do something other than tell someone what they dont have a right to do. You said it, I didn’t.

  31. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Webster, I’m not going to argue anymore. We both want the same thing, we just disagree with the method used.

  32. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Webster, and again, stop with the alternative facts. I HATE TRUMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. webster Says:

    @ buceric

My statement at 12:34 was not in my reply that started with @ buceric. Btw…saying if you dont like players kneeling is not the same thing as saying if you dont think he has the right. You started your response to me at 4:08 defending that you never said kaep did not have the right. Thats why i said alternative facts because i never accused you of that but since you dont like that alternative facts, we can call it fake news. In any case, kaep and whoever can kneel.

  34. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Webster, stop with the “alternative facts, fake news” stuff. It sounds like a Donald Trump attack on me IMO. I’m not now, ever was, or ever will be a Trump supporter, that scumbag. Your last sentence ” in any case Kap and whoever can kneel” sounds like your telling me what I have to think. I’ve already told you, I have no problem with the message, just the way it’s done. He can kneel all he wants. If he wants to bring attention to police brutality he should include white and black brutality. I’ve never heard Kap come out against the Somalian cop that killed the white woman in Minnesota. A white woman died, so I guess that’s ok? Right? Either way, whatever. A black cop kills an unarmed white girl and I hear about it for a week. A white cop kills an unarmed black man and it’s all over the news for months. White or Black, victims need the same amount of respect.
