Offseason Needs Glaring In Loss

September 24th, 2017

Bad day for respected GM.

This was just inexcusable garbage this afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium.

What jumped out at Joe in today’s beatdown in the Northlands was that anyone with a clear eye could see it coming since last year.

All offseason, Joe ragged, raged and railed about two positions of need. One, of course, is a decade-long gripe: No pass rush. Yes, Noah Spence has promise. But when he hurt his shoulder early in the game, as he walked off the field, so did the Bucs’ pass rush.

Bucs killer backup Vikings quarterback Case Keenum, could have been surfing for racy pictures of Rachel Watson on his smartphone he had so much time to throw.

And then there was the running back Joe begged Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to address very early in the draft. Oh, Licht did address running back… in the fifth round. His name? Playbook McSnoopDog.

Now Joe isn’t kvetching about the selection of O.J. Howard here, who looks like he will be a monster. But how many running backs did the Bucs pass on who could have made immediate impacts when instead, the Bucs chose safety Justin Evans in the second round? He has been such a difference-maker the Bucs had to go out and rescue T.J. Ward, who won’t fully know Mike Smith’s defense for a few weeks. Meanwhile, Evans had a grand total of seven snaps on defense in a blowout win over the Bears to open the season. Seven! When the game was over at halftime.

This Bucs team is built to win now, so we have been told. So why two areas of significant need for a team with real aspirations of a playoff berth were ignored until the fifth round of the draft is a mystery to Joe.

And no, Joe is not ripping Licht, who Joe thinks has done a tremendous job overall.

do not sign to another contract….NFL 2017 going forward is a passing game….Jameis is crazy innaccurate …alway has been always will be…

  2. sorryitriggeredyou Says:

No pass rush but that doesn’t matter right? Or sacks? Joe they are fine with no passrush or sacks (which result from pass rush if you’re new to football). It was the corners fault, it was the flags or the no calls but no way it was because there was no pressure or sacks. Sacks are a useless stat.

Said with so much f@#king sarcasm. Cue the DB55 and his circle jerk team.

  3. Colin Says:

You’re correct. Hit the go button too early. –Joe

  4. StAugBuc Says:

You’re correct. Joe hit the go button too early. –Joe

  5. JP4 Says:

America’s QB? Mariota doesn’t throw that ugly pick! Face it, Winston ain’t the QB everybody thought they were getting. The INTs will continue, because that’s the way he plays, the way he has ALWAYS played. In a game like this, it gives the Bucs no chance for a comeback.

  6. Sam Says:

Gripe all you want but Winston did not give this team a chance to win. He got outplayed by a backup today.

  7. DB55 Says:

    DallasBuc is my superhero

  8. WeAreLost Says:

CBs and DEs for sure and yes we will need a rb, but not at one.

  9. That Guy Says:

Good thing Licht traded up into the 2nd round last year to draft an idiot kicker when he had other needs to address.

  10. ndog Says:

Serious question why do we all still believe in this team? What have they done to give us any reason to believe at all? They draft like crap and we all know it despite what we convince ourselves, they sign crappy free agents, and they get coaches who are and have been lifetime assistants for a reason. No judging as I am more guilty than anyone but when will we learn our lesson? I mean outside of the Rich McKay drafts we have drafted like total garbage and Licht is just like the rest of them. Hargraves average, OJ average (so far), Spence one dimensional, Justin Evans useless, Augayo Out of the league in year 2, McNicholas another teams practice squad, Beckwith a one dimensional linebacker, Ryan Smith no comment, and on and on and on….. Why again were we excited?

  11. AlteredEgo Says:

QB….DT….CB….same old same old….and oh yeah and RB….whole lotta holes…Jameis is as Jameis has always done….NFL ain’t like a “box of chocolates”….it is a brutal killing machine….we got a soggy box of Kleenex…with a very good coaching staff and FO….

  12. Jim Says:

I’ll take Winston over McCown, Glennon, Freeman, Simms, Griese, Gradkowski, or Garcia any day.

  13. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I’m done. Winston wasn’t great, but I’m more pissed about the D. All offseason long we’ve heard about all of our depth. Well, we used our depth tonight, and it’s not depth, it’s trash. Maybe 8 or 9 wins but no playoffs again.😢

  14. Qazwsx12543 Says:

I think it’s the scheme. Four verticals off the play action is an antique. Useless runs and then throw downfield all the time. I think we need to use short passes a lot more like new england.

  15. MIKE Says:

WHAT A BEAT DOWN TAMPA TOOK, THE’RE GARBAGE, WHERE IS AMERICA’S QUARTERBACK , DAM SURE AIN’T HERE WITH BUC’S !!! ANOTHER YEAR DOWN THE TUBES …

  16. Pelbuc Says:

Winston is never going to lead Bucs to anything. Horrible showing by entire team, except for Humphries. I hope all the talk of playoffs stops now. Licht should have someone always make his 2nd round picks!

  17. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Lol sad thing is that Rb’s had very little to do with Vikings receivers running wide open down the field.

  18. unbelievable Says:

Lol all you chicken littles we are 1-1.

Today was an absolutely horrible game, but let’s see where we stand with injuries and such, and maybe even play a few or games before throwing in the towel on the season, ok?

    Grow a spine.

I’m most concerned with Jameis’ decision making and accuracy.

  19. AlteredEgo Says:

If I was Mike Evans….I’d run ! contract year

  20. ndog Says:

There you are Blake still think not drafting Cook was the right move? Yeah bro get a new sport to watch and make talent evaluations on.

  21. Buc15 Says:

what a bunch of cry babies. One bad game mostly due to a ton of injuries and you guys are like this? Cant say I am surprised at all.

  22. BucEmUp Says:

This defense is pathetic.Even with injuries they are not even competitive. Wide open field and a backup qb torching us as usually. I am at a loss for words that nobody has an issue with our DC but me. I want Mike Smith GONE!!!

  23. MIKE Says:

I WILL GIVE WINSTON TWO MORE YEARS AND STICK A FORK IN HIM HE’LL BE DONE , WANTED MARIOTA FROM THE START … HE WILL BE HERE WHEN AMERICA’S QUARTERBACK IS LONG GONE …………………………….

  24. DB55 Says:

LVD is probably done for the year

  25. Mike Johnson Says:

I see a lot of people tryin to make jameis the scapegoat here. We..our Bucs..Our..vaulted Defense..supposedly..let a backup QB..known as Keenum The Buc K-I-L-L-E-R Rip us apart. Jameis was doin what a Qb is suppose to do when he’s gettin his A..Kicked..tryin to catch up..Desparately. Of course, We will hear the..Coulda/Should’s What if-da’s all week long. But good teams plug in backups and keep on ticking..like a Keenum! We are not ready for that next step. Can’t even compete with the Vikings..NEXT!!

  26. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Hahahahahaha! You think that Cook is the reason we lost? Smd dude. Cook had nothing to do with Jameis throwing picks into triple coverage on back to back drives.

    You fanboys kill me.

  27. ndog Says:

You guys dont get it. It is not just one bad game it is the same crap we saw last year vs the same crappy Case Keeum! Now Spence is hurt, David looks done for the year, McCoy is hurt like always, Know is already hurt, Grimes is hurt, we have no running game at all, Jamies is not getting any better and his receivers are starting to get tired of it, Hargarves suck, Swaggy is useless, we drafted a blocking TE in the first round. You tell me what there is to be excited or positive about!

  28. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Licht is just bad at mapping out and filling drastic needs on this team from hunt to foreman and cook the bucs did nothing while those 3 are killing it

  29. BucTrooper Says:

“O.J. Howard here, who looks like he will be a monster.”

On what basis? Good SWEET EVER LOVING CHRISTMAS. Joe I love you but quit bending over backwards to defend this pick especially in the wake of Dalvin Cook literally jamming the ball down our throats like we were roofied prom queens.

Admit it: the. Bucs. Blew. The. Pick.

I don’t care if OJ Howard fell to them. They didn’t need a blocking TE. They needed a workhorse running back who would do EXACTLY WHAT DALVIN COOK DID TO US TODAY!!!!!!!!!

  30. ndog Says:

No running game equals no play action there tough guy but if you knew football you would know that, so that comment from you does not surprise me at all. Again get a new sport buddy.

  31. ClearwaterWes Says:

Weapons for Winston didn’t work the D can stop a runny nose.

  32. Eric Says:

Who needs Dalvin Cook when we got a blocking icon tight end?

    Sickening beyond belief.

Also don’t think our supposedly great head coach had his team ready to play.

    The post chucky debacle continues.

  33. Rod Munch Says:

Joe can you kindly rerun that article from the preseason where you said the deepest position on the team was corner, I could use a good laugh after this game.

It’s OK Joe, in order to hit the ball you have to swing, and sometimes you’re going to swing in miss. Why you choose to swing at a ball that was thrown to the shortstop I don’t know, but it happens, I guess…

  34. King C Says:

It’s true .. The Bucs really blew the pick. And we still could have had Kareem Hunt or Chris Carson… instead we got a RB who got cut

This offense does not work if there’s no threat of running game

  35. Rod Munch Says:

LOL! People complaining about OJ? Did you watch the game? Did you see the defense?

Just a hint kiddo, the two hardest positions to play as a rookie are TE and safety. OJ has been great so far and is a lot more than a “blocking” TE. I swear I don’t think 90% of you know anything about football.

  36. Captain Big Stick Says:

It’s one game every one.. just one game.. holy freak out

  37. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So, we are 1-1……we give up on the season….our draft picks…..all hope is gone….
Typical reaction because of too high expectations…

Settle down and let’s see what happens next Sun.

  38. MadMax Says:

Supporting the kneeling…..f them and Licht!

  39. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

    Lol some people.

I wanted Kareem Hunt in the 2nd you imbecile. Not my fault we didn’t draft him. Cook had nothing to do with our corners getting embarrassed.

Cook had equally nothing to do with Jameis throwing the game away when it was still in reach. Cook also had nothing to do with Jameis not even going through his reads.

Get a new team you pathetic Fsu Fanboy.

  40. ndog Says:

This team is not built to win. Great teams can run the ball and we have no runningback. Great teams can rush the passer and we have no pass rushers. Great teams dont turn the ball over and we turn it over all but 2-3 games a year. Great teams have a great QB and as much as it hurts me to say we dont have a great QB, not even close at this point. I still have hope but it is a blind hope at best.

  41. Destinjohnny Says:

We have glaring holes at some positions
But don’t bring it up on this site as u will get crushed

  42. Jeffrey Moos Says:

If this team doesn’t make the playoffs, GM has to take the fall. Too much expectation to make an inaccurate quarterback one dimensional. We didn’t need Cook but there were plenty available not to draft one before Boise’s whiniest

  43. R.O. Says:

You little girls quit whining about the kneeling.. Who cares. Last time I checked this was the United States and people are free to protest anyway they want. It’s because of small narrow minded morons who don’t know the real issues in this country and world are distracted by this. This isnt even an issue. Their free to do it and your free to whine and cry about it.

  44. ndog Says:

Again with a running game your defense is not on the field as much and is not exposed as much. Hunt while playing great does not match our style of play whereas Cook is built for this offense. You dont think Jameis had just a little extra pressure on him today to win the game when we cant run the ball at all and the defense knows it is all on him? Just face it you were wrong move on and admit it. We totally blew it and it is becoming a pattern for our GM Mr. Licht. If this does not turn around fast we might be starting over again next year and that is not my desire but a reality of the Glazers. You think they are going to stand for getting embarrassed when everyone with a pair of eyes saw Cook was the pick and we passed? So what was the impact of Howard, Godwin and Beckwith combined vs Cook?

  45. Pelbuc Says:

Ndog I couldn’t agree with you more. Winston is NOT the answer at QB, no running game, no pass rush, no DBs, no depth, Terrible GM and bad play calling. 6-10 if Bucs are lucky. How as a GM do not address Dline and RB in the off season? SMH!

  46. martinii Says:

I agree TBBF lot of season left. Injuries are always a bitch, but everyone has them. I know it is a sore subject with many but Jameis needs to settle down and stop throwing so many interceptions. With the receiving corp we have have we can win a lot of games this year. Everyone take a deep breath we are still 1-1 with 14 games to go.

  47. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Ndog you are talking out of your Culo.

You can say whatever the freak you want, but just because you say Hunt doesn’t fit our team doesn’t make it so.

Jameis had every chance to win today. You can’t blame his retarded decisions on “pressure” when we were moving the ball on both drives. He chose to force the ball into a crowd of purple instead of looking for an open man.

You think you have it all figured out, but your perception is clearly warped by a deep seated bias.

This loss had very little to do with Cook, and everything to do with our Secondary getting a$$-blasted for the entire first half and on nearly every 3rd down. FOH with your fanboy bs.

  48. ndog Says:

The next 2 QB’s we play have 7 Super Bowl rings combined and we just got torched by Case Keenum. So for those of you saying calm down think about that for a moment.

  49. Cgmaster27 Says:

You people are so funny. Put a fork in Jameis , mariota will be here long after he’s gone? The same mariota that has one less turnover his year? The same mariota that has less wins since he came into the league? The same mariota that is blowing it up for 56 yards right now? Some of you mariota fans are clowns and can’t wait for Jameis to fail so you can come on here and vent. Mariota will never be the Bucs qb, get over it already. It’s one week and some of you need to whine about the season being over. Jesus give it up.

  50. FlumundaCheese Says:

Jameis was going against one of the best defenses in the league and was almost immediately down two TDs. Defense stinks. No running game. Marpet can’t snap straight. But Jameis is the problem? At least we have a good blocking tight end in OJ Stocker…I mean Howard. And Evans in the 2nd….pffft.

  51. BucTrooper Says:

    OJ howard.

29 yards of total offense… THIS SEASON.

Mike, I always like what you have to say…but Jameis deserves every bit of criticism he’s getting AND MORE! He’s the main one responsible for our defense being on the field most of the day. Couldn’t convert a 3rd down to save his life, 3 incredibly dumb picks and his knucklehead toss to Brate. I don’t see him being a whole lot more than talk, talk, talk. I’m sick of hearing what a fierce leader he is…How about leading by example with excellent play?
    Hey Jameis STFU and PLAY!!!!
    Josh Freeman….NOW THIS? SMH

  53. Jeagan1999 Says:

Way too early to pull the plug! Come on…..2nd game of the season people! Our defense got decimated by injuries today, Jameis needs to be cut down on the picks! And we need to find a running game! Still got 14 games to go! Not time to panic.

  54. nate_tweetz Says:

Our secondary is awful. They were bad last week as well. The Bears had practice squad WR moss’in our CB’s and the same thing happened today. Hargreaves is a bust. He is NOT good. Our 35 year old CB was out today, and we have straight trash at DB behind them. Odell will feast next week and Tom Brady might break a passing yard record the following week. This was the same concern I voiced last week.

  55. Joe Says:

On what basis? Good SWEET EVER LOVING CHRISTMAS. Joe I love you but quit bending over backwards to defend this pick especially in the wake of Dalvin Cook literally jamming the ball down our throats like we were roofied prom queens.

    Quality rage here.

  56. Buc15 Says:

@ndog: I see the jags are hot sowhy dont you go ahead and jump on over to that bandwagon.

@captain: holy freakout is right. Some fans just arent built for this

  57. old man says Says:

Jamies is not the answer. I have said this before. For all of his great qualities, his desire to make plays when no play is available or to make very very bad decisions that result in turnovers is and will kill our team. I will blame the DC, Mike Smith for our 4 quarters of miserable pass defense. Lord knows what he was trying to do today. Mike Smith and Jamies lost this game today.

  58. BuccoDav Says:

in all fairness, the defense was down 5 or 6 starters… why couldn’t our vaunted offense match Case Keenum’s output?

  59. America's Commenter Says:

Need #1: A quarterback who can read an NFL defense. That was a Dilferesque performance by Winston today.

  60. Jacko101 Says:

Cook would have been nice, but we do have Doug and I truly think he will make a difference. RB wasn’t are biggest problem today, CB and The invisible pass rush. Those two things needs to be the upmost important areas

  61. tmaxcon Says:

Eradicate the leader of the losing culture cancer93 and losses like this go away. You can not depend on mentally weak career losers to step up when needed. Today would have been a perfect day for 93 to step up and carry team in Kwon absence but instead he does what he does best get hurt and lay down like a cheap one night stand

  62. Shing Says:

Inaccurate?!?!?!?! Winston completed 70% of his VERTICAL passes, in a one dimensional offense, against one of the best pass rushes in the league. He underthrew DJax, but threw two beautiful tds later. Gotta take the good with the bad.

The second was miscommunication between him and DJax, who was wrong we’ll never know, and the last was Evans throwing a fit on the sidelines so JW forced it.

If any of you football fans” think ANY QB will go into Minny and not have trouble with an O that is one dimensional. then you don’t know football.

Will JW throw picks, yes!! Will TB win WITHOUT JW TAKING CHANCES?!?!. NO!!!!!

  63. DBS Says:

You can complete 100% of your passes. But if you only come away with 3 points most of the time or an occasional 6 when you need more, You lose! 12 points per game in the NFL will lose you most games. That is what Jameis does. Or he gets picked!
